Problem with Snow Leopard and FileVault after upgrading - how to solve it?

I recently installed Snow Leopard in my MacBook Pro, where I had FileVault running in my old Tiger. After installation and shutting down, it is now impossible to open and log in my user account. I get the message: "Your home folder, which is protected by FileVault, didn't open. It needs to be repaired." After clicking OK, it reads: "You are unable to log in to the user account "(my name)" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred." What to do?

you don't have to reinstall. just enable the root account and log in as root. you can access your backup from there. see this link on how to enable root.

use your snow leopard disk instead of leopard disk as that link suggests.

  • Problem with Snow Leopard and file sharing

    I mostly work at home where I have an 18 months-old intel iMac 24'' running Leopard and an older iMac G5 20'' (PowerPC) running Tiger. Besides, I have a three months-old MacBook Pro 17" in which I recently upgraded the system to Snow Leopard.
    Before this upgrade I never had a problem with the sharing of files between the three computers (I have them connected via Ethernet and a 5-port D-Link router wich provides flawless internet connection to the three computers). However, after the upgrade it has become impossible to connect the MacBook to the iMac G5 or vice versa via afp. Besides, getting the MacBook to connect to the (Leopard) iMac 24'' is frustratingly slow in either direction.
    A related problem is the fact that after the upgrade the portable is no longer capable of seeing directly my ethernet-connected laser printer (to one of the ports of the D-Link router) although... surprise! it does see it as a shared printer in the iMac G5 and this way it prints alright.
    Any ideas or suggestions to explore the cause of or solve this problem are warmly welcome.

  • Problem with Snow Leopard and imovie

    After spending hours putting together a movie in imovie, I cannot share it to media browser nor any of the other options listed under the "share" button. All the titles and transitions play in the project window, but will not play full screen. Any suggestions?

    A "clean install", by definition, wipes everything already on your hard disc - including the previous version of QuickTime.
    Snow Leopard includes a new version of QuickTime called QuickTime X.
    You may find that putting back the previous QuickTime 7 lets everything run properly (QT 7 and QT X can both live happily side-by-side on the same Mac under Snow Leopard).
    During an upgrade installation, instead of a clean install, SL may offer to leave QuickTime 7 on your Mac instead of wiping it; on a clean install it'll be wiped clean away.
    QT 7 for Leopard is still available here, but whether it neatly installs after you've applied Snow Leopard, I don't know; you'd have to test that yourself.

  • Strange problem with Snow Leopard and Netware

    Here is a strange one, but I am posting it here because I think it may have something to do with Apple software in Snow Leopard. I recently upgraded my Aluminum iMac to Snow Leopard, and have seen the following, rather puzzling behavior in the Prosoft Engineering client for Novell Netware. The symptoms are as follows. The server volumes mount OK, and I am able to see the files that are located on the server. In column view, when I select a file, I am able to see a preview of the file. Likewise, I can use Quickview to preview the contents of the file. However, when I try to drag a file from the server to my hard drive (any location), I get a dialog box saying I don't have permission to read that file. If I do a get info on the file, it says I have permission to read and write. For graphics files (such as Tiff, which have Preview as their default viewer), double clicking on the file causes Preview to open, but the file isn't opened. Now, what is really strange, if I use Photoshop CS1 to open that same file, it opens fine, and I am able to save it on the desktop, as usual. Likewise, if it is a Word or Excel file, they can be opened in their application, and saved on my hard drive. Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on, and how I can restore normal behavior?

    Unfortunately I don't know what's going on, but we're having the same issue at work on two Mac Pro machines. We installed Snow and everything's been running as good as before or better - except for this issue. One machine had a clean install and one had an update install, and both are exhibiting behavior identical in every detail to what you describe.
    We've contacted Prosoft and they're looking into it; official word on their website is that Snow Leopard is fully supported.

    I recently updated to snow leopard 10.6.5 and I am having probems with my wifi ,it will not access any unlocked or open signals,this is not acceptable ,any hotel or coffe shop or place that requires a code for you to acess the internet,that means travelling with your mac is useless, hopeing this is a bug and mac will fix it,if anyone can help me with this problem it would be greatly appreciated....

    I just upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I work on my MacBook Pro everything works fine. But when I use through the LED Cinema Display then the machine hangs on several programs, like iTunes, Time Machine, even Finder. Before the upgrade everything worked fine. Anyone having the same problem?

    I've had similar problems when using my cinema display. I am currently using it with my usb backup drive disconnected and , so far, have not had the problems. Here's hoping, although it is not a good permanent solution, it means I do not have Time Machine running or access to my other backup files. I suspect that it may be a problem (as reported by others on this forum) with SL mounting a sleeping drive. Time will tell.

  • Problems with Snow Leopard and choosing startup disk.

    I just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on my external drive to test it out. Most things seem to work just fine, but I'm having problems selecting a start up disk from system preferences. When I bring up start up disk, I see the internal and external drives but they are greyed out and unselectable. How do I get back to starting up off of my internal drive? Is this a common problem?

    Do try CT's suggestion first; that might be the most likely explanation.
    In Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, do you see both drives?
    You might be able to get back into the Internal by starting up from Startup Manager. Hold the Option (Alt) key down at the startup chime. When that finishes loading, you should be presented with icons for both drives. If that succeeds, and you can return to the Internal, you can then see if the options in Startup Disk are available.
    In Disk Utility, I would also repair the External, if and when you are booted back from the Internal.
    And once you are booted back normally, highlight the mounted External Volume and do a Get info (CMD-I). Make sure "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked.
    Edit: as CT suggested, you should also repair Permissions, but -- and this may have changed in 10.6, not sure -- you should generally repair Permissions booted from the Volume you are repairing. Before repairing Permissions, however, on any Volume, you should first Verify that Volume. Repairing Permissions on a Volume with problems will only make those problems worse.

  • Problems with snow leopard and file vault

    I just installed snow leopard on my macbook. When I try to log on, I get a message "your home folder is protected by file vault and didn't open, it needs to be repaired. To repair folder and continue logging in click ok."   When I click ok, I get the message "You are unable to log in to the user account at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
    How do you turn off the file vault if you can't log in? Any solutions are greatly appreciated.

    Boot to safe mode by holding the Shift key on boot.
    Then you can turn filevault off and reboot normally.

  • Problem with snow leopard and adobe reader

    The United States Postal Service uses Adobe Reader to print labels with their "Click 'n Ship", a great service. I recently installed Snow Leopard on my Mac and I can no longer print labels with USPS Click 'n Ship. Applecare suggested I reinstall Reader (didn't work), or try with Firefox (haven't tried it yet). If this is a glitch, it will effect thousands of people who use USPS services. But maybe I just need a plug in, or need to make some change in the Adobe Reader Preferences.     I was also getting a blank page when I tried to open a PDF.
    It seemsI that when I downloaded the update version of Adobe Reader, it switched off the "Read & Write" back to just "Read".
    if you go and get information on a PDF or Adobe  program (Command I), under "Open With" should say  Adobe Reader App  and at the left bottom where you'll see"Name" then below that,"everyone"-now just across you'll probably see "Read Only".(if you don't see this then go to step 5). This should be Read & Write so that Adobe Acrobat can create the Adobe Reader program to allow you to open and use a PDF.
    If you have Adobe Reader 10.0 on your Apps, try going to step 5 below
    1) Go to your user folder on your hard drive (ie: "lew").
    2) Open Library/Application Support/ folder.
    3) If there isn't an "Adobe" folder, create one now (go to File-->New Folder menu item) and name it "Adobe".
    4) If there is an "Adobe" folder, right click on it and choose "Get Info". 
    5) Expand the "Sharing & Permissions" area at the bottom of the info window. (click the triangle) so that  "system", "admin" and "everyone" appears.
    6) Click the lock icon in the lower right of the window.  Enter your password in the dialog that appears.
         Now you'll see various choices you can make and "Read & Write" is open of them.
    7) For your username (ie: "lew") entry under "Name", make sure it says "Read & Write" to the right of it.  If your username isn't listed, make sure to the right of "everyone" it says "Read & Write".
    Now Acrobat should launch properly when double clicked in the Finder as well as when viewing PDFs in Safari.

  • DNS problems with Snow Leopard. Can't upgrade to Mountain Lion either.

    My Macbook Pro has been working quite well since I got it just over a year ago, until last week when I shut it down to go stay at my parents house. I turned it on when I got there and it automatically connected to the network because i go there often, however when I tried to open up a browser it would not work. I opened up several of the other browsers that I have but all of them kept saying they couldn’t connect to the server. I thought perhaps my dad had changed the router settings or something since last time I'd been there since the internet was working perfectly at my house only two hours previous. He said he hadn't changed anything and he was right, the internet worked perfectly through my sisters PC and through his ipad and my iphone. I later took it round to a friend’s house where it remembered his network too but still would not open addresses in the browser and when I finally got home to my house, I found I had the same problem. With every network I connected to I could update my apps and software, use my torrent client, ping certain IP's and connect with various other things that require internet connection, but the browser still never worked. After some research I came to the conclusion that it was most likely a DNS issue, I found this odd as I had not changed any sort of settings at all recently, except for turning the firewall on, which I turned off be3fore trying to troubleshoot. I  have tried virtually everything that has been suggested on the internet like Flushing DNS cache, resetting PRAM, bringing my network to the top, turning airport on and off, connecting through ethernet, renewing DHCP lease, using google IP as DNS, checking for set proxies, repairing disk permissions, resetting router, checking router settings, the list goes on and on. The last thing I tried was to copy the com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist file then delete the old one and paste the new one back in, since then my Mac cannot connect to the internet in any of the previous ways.
    After pulling my hair out for days, I thought the only option left was to upgrade to Mountain Lion, which I was planning on doing anyway. After downloading it though, I came to the option to select the disk I want to install to only to see my primary and only disk open my Mac coloured faintly and telling me that "This disk cannot be used to start up the computer". After more research I found that there were a few issues, none of which I have. I’ve never used time machine so there is no issue with any set partition for it, I have no other partitions on it at all either so I cannot use the resizing trick that seems to help most people. I would normally just backup all my data at this point and do a fresh install, but haven't got the funds to purchase a another TB at this point and I have over 650GB worth of valuable data on the Mac. Could someone pleeeease help me!?!?!

    You cannot go to Mountain Lion, as stedman1 states.

  • Problems with Snow Leopard and users

    I have upgraded 3 x 10.5 iMacs to 10.6. They have been working fine for the last 2 months, but now have some strange problems on the units.
    1. On the one, it cannot save documents on the iMac under that user. If I create another user, then that new user can save documents. Is there anyway to correct this. It seems like a permissions issue.
    2. On the second unit it won't allow the user to convert documents with the MS OpenXML converter from 2008 to 2004 files. But if I create a new user, then that new user can convert the files.
    3. And on the third unit, the user can't print certain documents, but guess what when you create a new user, that user can print the certain documents.
    It seems like a corrupt user file somewhere that is specific to 10.6. Has anyone else had these issues?
    I wanna check if there are any fixes before I start moving user data from corrupt accounts to new accounts. Maybe there is an easier solution.

      Thanks for the feedback. Here's the second way.
    While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process.

  • Solution for those having problems with Snow Leopard and drivers

    I have posted what worked for me in several posts that other people had started, but because I feel I might sound repetitive and annoying, I am just posting it in this one for everyone. I hope it can be helpful. Best wishes for the year 2010
    First of all, make sure you have made a SOFTWARE UPDATE before doing the following:
    * Make sure your printer is connected and "on"/green light via your USB port (or other which will be recognised by your system)
    * Go to System Preference
    * Print & Fax
    * Your printer will appear.
    * Right click on the printer that is giving problems
    * Reset printing system
    * All printers will disappear
    * Click on the + sign under this/these to add a new printer (I suppose you would have to do so for each one you have if you have more than one... not sure)
    * In my case, the one that appear was 950c even though the one I have is 959. So, to make sure I would have something, I kept that, but then I click the + sign again.
    * I selected the 950C, but then I checked on "PRINT USING".... THEN
    * I had to "SELECT PRINTER SOFTWARE"
    * I found it and that came where it said "Print using", but this time it was the right software.
    * I renamed the NAME of the printer to be sure I would recognise it... LOL
    I hope this is useful for all of you.

    If a device is an All-in-One and can therefore scan, you will find that when the printer is added, the pane on the right hand side for that device will have two headings - Print and Scan.
    If the device is just a scanner, then there will be heading of Scanners in the list on the left side. Printers will typically be listed at the top of this list.
    Regarding click the + (Add), if you see Protocol, etc, then you have selected the IP icon at the top of the Add Printer browser. This is for networked devices using TCP/IP. To see devices connected to your Mac via USB, then you need to select the Default icon while in the Add Printer browser.
    Note that if you don't see any icons in the Add Printer toolbar, then you have it hidden. To see the icons, click the oval shaped button on the right hand side of the Add Printer pane.

  • Epson R2880 printer driver problems with Snow Leopard

    I’m running 10.6.4 on a new Mac mini and I’m trying to print to a new Epson R2880. If I let the system choose the printer driver in the print and fax utility, I get a sort of generic print dialogue box without many options, but it prints. If I go into the print and fax utility and manually choose the driver, I get a different print dialog box with all the appropriate print options. I checked and it matches the screen shots for this printer that are posted on the Epson site, so I feel sure this the correct driver. However, when I try to print with this driver, I get this error message. Error:/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpll.app/Contents /MacOS/rastertoescpll failed.
    This seems to be a common problem with Snow Leopard and the R2880 Epson printers, and it seems that most people are able to solve it by deleting the printer from the printer queue and resetting the printer queue. But that hasn’t solved my problem.
    Here’s what I’ve done:
    Manually deleted the Epson folder from the hard drive and trashed it, repaired disk permissions, uninstalled the Epson driver, updated software, downloaded and installed the Apple/Epson driver, deleted the printer from the print queue, and reset the printer queue. I’ve done all of these things several times over. And still I get the same error message every time I try to print from the driver with the print options. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a fix?

    Some of the previous users had success when they restarted after deleting the /Library/Printers/EPSON and /Library/Caches/Epson folders. You might also try deleting the /Library/Cache folder. There is a solution posted from someone at Epson:

    Substitute 2880 for RX580:
    Make sure that you have completely removed the Stylus Photo RX580 driver, then install the new driver from System Update:
    1. Power off the printer
    2. Open System Pref. and Print/Fax
    3. Highlight the RX580 printer
    4. Click on the ""-"" sign
    5. Close Print and Fax
    6. Open your Mac's Hard Drive
    7. Open the Library Folder
    8. Open Printer and delete the EPSON Folder
    9. Open the PPDs folder find the Epson Stylus Photo RX580.gz and delete the file
    10. Close the PPD and the Printer folder
    ->11. In the Library folder, open the Caches Folder
    ->12. Delete the Epson folder
    ->13. Restart the Mac
    14. Power on the printer
    15. Click on the Apple Icon and System Update
    16. Follow the directions to install the new driver
