Problems using CONNECT BY

Hi. I'm having problems using the CONNECT BY feature in oracle 9.
I need to check which codes are causing loop between parent and child. In 10G I could use CONNECT_BY_ISCYCLE, but it is not available in 9i; so what I did was the following (if there's a better solution please let me know).
parent_id | child_id
111 | 777
777 | 111
this should cause a loop and I should be able to tell the user that code 111 or 777 (either) is causing the problem.
procedure check_for_loops(op_class_code OUT MY_TABLE.PARENT_ID%type)
IS
class_parent_id2 MY_TABLE.PARENT_ID%type;
BEGIN
for c1 in ( SELECT distinct parent_id FROM MY_TABLE )
->loop
->->SELECT parent_id
->->INTO class_parent_id2
->->FROM MY_TABLE
->->WHERE parent_id = c1.parent_id
->->CONNECT BY PRIOR parent_id = child_id
->->start with parent_id = c1.parent_id;
->end loop;
->exception
->when NO_DATA_FOUND then
->return;
->when others then
->if SQLCODE = -1436 THEN
->->for c2 in ( select distinct parent_id from MY_TABLE
->->where parent_id = c1.parent_id )
->->loop
->->->->op_class_code := c2.parent_id;
->->end loop;
->->else
->->->->raise;
->->end if;
end check_for_loops;
If there's a loop (the exception code is -1436), then I get the code and return it to the client.
However, in some situations the exception thrown is the following:
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01422: exact fetch returns more than requested number of rows
is the connect by used correctly? Is there any other better way to retrieve the offending code that is causing the circular loop?
thanks

The code is working ok at the moment. I have a similar problem. I have two tables:
- stage_table (parent_id, child_id)
- active_table (parent_id, child_id)
(they both have the same structure)
stage_table is populated with data that will eventually be stored in active_table, once the validations are succesful.
What I'm trying to do is loop thru the stage table,and for every row I want to call the function to see if that row causes loop. my function is:
->FUNCTION check_for_loops_stage_table()
->RETURN EMPARRAY
->AS
->->l_codes EmpArray := EmpArray();
->->CURSOR c1 IS
->->->->select distinct parent_id
->->->->from stage_table
->->->->where my_iscycle( parent_id ) = 1;
->->BEGIN
->->->for rec in c1 LOOP
->->->->l_codes.extend;
->->->->l_codes(l_codes.last) := rec.parent_id;
->->->end loop;
->->RETURN l_codes;
->END check_for_loops_stage_table;
the cursor c1 is basically
(am I using EMPARRAY correctly?). As you can see, I want to put all the codes that are failing into an EMPARRAY, so I can later on retrieve that emparray from java and deal with it.
the my_iscycle function is:
FUNCTION my_iscycle(p_parent_id IN stage_table.parent_id%type)
RETURN stage_table.parent_ID%type
AS
-> v_count NUMBER;
->BEGIN
->->SELECT COUNT (*)
->->INTO v_count
->->FROM (SELECT parent_id
->->->->FROM active_table
->->->->START WITH parent_id = p_parent_id
->->->->CONNECT BY PRIOR parent_id = child_id);
->->->RETURN 0;
->->EXCEPTION
->->->->WHEN OTHERS THEN
->->->->IF SQLCODE = -1436 THEN
->->->->->RETURN 1;
->->->->END IF;
->END my_iscycle
If I have in my active_table
parent_id | child_id
111 | 777
and then in my stage_table I have
parent_id | child_id
777 | 111
the result I get from EMPARRAY is empty. So it doesn't seem to find the loop, don't know why. Any ideas?

    Hi,

    I use Apache Tomcat server 5.0 and Mysql as back end. I have done connection pooling in tomcat server installation folder and everything works fine.But when I tried the same on netbeans I could not connect using connection pooling and it's throwing error as

    Clustering with connection pools works fine in WLS 5.1. If connections are
              not being release, you have bugs in your code.
              When a connection is retrieved from a pool on one instance, a corresponding
              connection is NOT retrieved on another instance.

  • Problem to connect to mysql from servlet using a javabean

    Hi,

    I have problem to connect to MySql database, by a connection javabean.
    It's the following: a HTML page calls a servlet and this servlet imports the package connection javabean.
    It has no problem when I establish the connection inside the servlet, with all its methods (public and private). But i want to separate the code connection from servlet.
    Detail: there is no problem, using the javabean to connect to MS Access database.
    I put "mysql-connector-java-3.1.12-bin.jar" file inside WEB-INF/lib application and common/lib directories.
    I set the classpath:
    SET CLASSPATH=%CATALINA_HOME%\COMMON\LIB\mysql-connector-java-3.1.12-bin.jar;%CLASSPATH%
    I think that the servlet cannot create an instance of javabean, because passed by catch exception of the servlet init method.
    But I don't know why.
    Please Why?
    Below there are the fragment of errors, servlet code e javabean code.
    Thank you.

    hi
    i am trying to connect to a database using oracle thin driver.
    i am getting following error:

    Io exception: the network adapter could not establish the connection
    the connection string has the property of using a dedicated server
    for this reason i have put USE_DEDICATED_SERVER=ON in sqlnet.ora file...
    we did not face this problem while connecting to other databases which do not have the property of dedicated server in their connection string in tnsnames.ora file.
    please suggest a solution for this.
    thanks and regards,
    asif

    If you are using the thin driver, sqlnet.ora does not come into play. None of Oracle networking does. That is one of the great things about using the thin driver, no need to have the client installed.
    That error is due to incorrect connection info you are supplying or the machine you are connection from can't ping the machine it is trying to connect to.

    Hi Vishnu
    Looks like a classloader issue. BEA class loader is very tricky. Any jar added manually in classpath, will end up loading only those classes. Any imports that we have in any of those classes do not get loaded. Anyhow, coming to your point, add classes12.jar inside your portal web project Web-Inf/lib folder and see if that helps. Usually thats where we put all the JARs for 8.1 SPxx applications. If this still breaks, then remove the jar from web-inf/lib folder and add under your portal app App-Inf/lib folder. First try with app-inf/lib folder having this jar. If not then with web-inf/lib. Basically web-inf is specific to that web app only. If you have a different app having this jdbc code, then put under app-inf/lib folder. Make sure that you remove the classes12.jar that you added in classpath either in env variable or in setdomainenv.cmd file.
    When weblogic uses native OCI Drivers, it refers to jars at this location: ....\beawlp814\weblogic81\server\ext\jdbc\oracle\10g or 9g. Try using one of these jars and see if that works. Most of the times I used these jars only for oracle specific native drivers.
    Word of caution. Try to use Connection Pool and a DataSource created in weblogic console for your jdbc code. This Datasource can still use the Oracle drivers that you want (instead of BEA Weblogic wrapper oci drivers) located in above location. Use JNDI Lookup and get Datasource and then connection. This is more recommended approach with many advantages then using DriverManager approach..

  • Problem in using connection pool in netbeans

    Hi,
    I am using Net Beans and Sun java application server and Derby as database.
    I have created data connnection and also configure JDBC resources (ie. DataResource and connectionPool).
    Now i want to use this connection pool in my class, I have create one DataConnection class and put this code
    private javax.sql.DataSource getMyDatabase () throws javax.naming.NamingException {
            javax.naming.Context c = new javax.naming.InitialContext();
            return (javax.sql.DataSource) c.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/myDatabase");
        }I got this code by right click and selecting Enterprise Resources->Use Data, But while running i got the exception
    javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial
    Plz tell me How can we overcome this exception and is there any other way do use connection pool.
    Thanks.

    Thanks bamkin-ov-lesta,
    DbConnectionBroker is good for servlet or other java application. If i use this class, it is like i am writing code for connection pool. I am using NetBeans and sun java application server which provide its default connection pool configuration and i want to use that only.
    And I am not getting which class name to be set in environment variable under what name in the following exception.
    javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial
    Help me plz.

  • Using CONNECT BY problem -- HELP!!!

    I got the following error message when I use CONNECT BY to do a hierarchical query:
    ORA-01436: CONNECT BY loop in user data
    Question 1: How can I detect where the loop is in my data set?
    Question 2: I want to somehow catch the error, discard the bad row, and continue the hierarchical query. How can I do it?
    Thanks a lot!!

    Here is the query:
    OPEN path_cv FOR
    SELECT cui1, rel, cui2, min(sab) as sab
    FROM ( SELECT * FROM mrrel WHERE rel = rel_link )
    START WITH cui1 = startCUI
    CONNECT BY PRIOR cui2 = cui1 AND cui2 != cui1 AND level < max_level
    GROUP BY cui1, rel, cui2;
    startCUI is the root, e.g. 'president'. rel_link specifies what sort of relation between cui1 and cui2, e.g. 'supervise'. If I set "max_level" as 6, it is fine. I get correct results. However, if I set "max_level" as 7, it failed. I believe that some nodes between level 6 and 7 forms a loop, but I don't know where. The data set is so huge that I have no way to check by eyes. My question is how I can discard the bad row(s), and continue the query?
    Thanks!

  • Problem using File sharing  in a small office network

    I have a problem using File sharing on an Imac and Macbook Pro.
    My office has a small network running Windows Small office file server 2003. I have one Windows 2000 PC connected to it and 3 Macs, an 2.4 gHz Intel iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 , a MBP running the same and a Mac Mini running 10.5.
    From the Finder Shared window of the Mac Mini, I can see all the computers on the network. It also used to be the case for the iMac, but the MBP could never see the Windows PC’s, not the server or the Win2000. This wasn’t a big problem as I was communicating between the Macs and using the shared printer on the iMac.
    On Monday Jan 19 the iMac was suddenly unavailable to the other 2 Macs. It was working normally on the Friday. The iMac can access the Mac Mini and copy files to it. The Mac Mini can see the iMac but cannot access it. Even trying to connect as, ends in a failed connection. I have tried rebooting, turning File sharing off and then on again to no avail.
    The iMac now also cannot see the Windows PC’s which it previously could.
    To get files from the MBP for printing, I now copy it to the Mac Mini and acces the folder from the iMac, a very tedious procedure. I don’t know why this happened and am scared that the Mac Mini is going to do the same thing.
    All three computers are also running VMware 2.0 with Windows XP pro, and from VMware the server is visible on all the computers.
    Any help will be much appreciated, I live in a small town in South Africa and the local computer suppliers have no knowledge of the Macs.
    I think that the problem with the iMac may have started after a software upgrade to 10.5.6 but I am not entirely sure.
    Thank you

    Well, you're current method sounds pretty good. But if you want to user a file server, hey go ahead.
    What you want to do when you centralize project files is to keep track of which one is the newest and becareful not to overwrite files with the same name. So you either have to set up individual spaces on the server (separate AFP/FTP folders maybe), or you'll need to run a file checkout service.
    The individual space is cheaper, but it's not much of a difference from backing up to the network drive. Since you have Gigabit connections, you might even opt to save ALL the user files on the server instead of just the project files.
    If you want to run a file checkout service, there's two approaches. You can run a service that can host any kind of file, or you can run a version control system for each kind of application (Photoshop, Word, etc.). Please notice, that as you read further and further along, the methods become more and more expensive and complicated. Once you get to this point, it will be necessary to purchase or build software in addition to the Mac OS X Server package.
