Project Manager: Why?

I just had opportunity to rebuilt my entire system from a zero'd drive. Upon running Logic for the first time I couldn't help but notice how much faster it launched and how much quicker it was ready to do business than it has in recent weeks. And what was different about the past few weeks that Logic became slower? Well, I started using the Project Manager (PM), doing scans, resolving file references. In short, I started using the PM and I'm not sure to what benefit.
Since my foray into the PM, Logic would load with prolonged PM messages, including "updating tree". We're talking about a few seconds here and there, so no big deal, right? But still, before venturing into PM world, I never saw anything more than a blip of a dialog about "updating tree".
Upon further reflection, I'm having trouble understanding the point of the PM. What I'm going to do is describe my understanding of how I think Logic works, and I'd like to know if I'm missing some big important point of the PM. But here's where I'm at now...
I came to L7 from L4 where there was no PM feature. I lived fine without it. When I saved a song, the paths of the audio files lived in the logic file, just as I imagine they do now. If I was missing a file, Logic's search engine came up asking me where the file was. Simple enough.
When I came to L7 and started using EXS, I RTFM about file organization but blissfully ignored the chapter on the PM. Unless I did something stupid and renamed a file in the Finder, songs loaded fine, sampler instruments loaded fine, what could be simpler? So at this point I'm totally ignorant of the purpose of the PM, yet I still had success running Logic.
So... back to last night and the re-building of my system. Without doing a PM scan, I tested out EXS and was able to load up my sampler instruments just fine. In fact, some sampler instruments that Logic used to choke on (after doing the requisite work in PM to resolve file references) loaded up incredibly fast with no "where is the file..." dialogs. Now, I imagine that this is because the sampler instrument itself contains the path to the required files. Same logic as a song file containing data about which audio files to use. So who needs the PM to keep track of this stuff when file paths are already contained in songs and/or EXS instruments?
The kicker came when I looked at PM today, and saw that it had only "caught" about 5 of 20-odd sampler instrument folders.
So at this point, my feeling towards PM is:
1) it doesn't change Logic's ability to successfully recall audio or EXS instruments
2) running scans ends up increasing Logic's boot-up time
3) running scans may indeed keep you busy for quite some time answering dialogs about which file is needed for various songs and instruments
4) EXS instruments load faster now than they did after hours of scanning/tinkering with the PM
So, someone please enlighten me. What's the point of the PM then? I'm all ears/eyes...

Hey X-man,
Well... you asked, so I'mma tell ya... [exhales, then... begins]
So clearly there was something majorly wrong with my 'puter cuz the Jeanius had to reset the firmware. G*ddammit if I know what I could have possibly done to cause something like that to become necessary. It's not like I ever tinker with Terminal or any of that Unix crap. OK, OK, I admit it. It's not crap. My inner geek would love to know how to program Unix, but there's only so much time in the day. But I digress...
So yes, it's possible that because the firmware needed to be reset that in the interim my computer was acting funny as a result, causing problems with applications like Logic. But I don't really know that for sure; don't know enough about how it all works to even make an educated guess. For all I know the firmware reset became necessary only after the kernel panics and not before. Again, I don't know enough about this stuff to debug it. And at the end of the day, to paraphrase Bones from Star Trek, "Dammit Kirk, I'm a composer, not a computer expert" (the original line was "I'm a doctor, not a tree surgeon" LOL). This kinda stuff is just waaaay outta my field of expertise.
Anyway, my decision to forego the PM is pretty much outlined above. I don't think it's necessary for 99% of normal, everyday operation of the program. Just like Hyperedit. I never, ever, ever, ever use it. Sure, it's a feature of the program, but I just have no use for it. Can't see the need to either because my editing techniques don't require that tool. So to me, Hyperedit is redundant.
Same with PM. My saving project technique is, I think (hope!!) adequate enough that I don't need the PM to help me link files. All that info is already contained in the song file and/or EXS instruments so I think that to a large extent, PM is redundant (except for the few benefits I described above).
How well does it even work? Well, prior to my 'puter's meltdown I saw first-hand that PM wasn't able to resolve various file references. For example, it couldn't find any of the movie files associated with my various cues over multiple projects (these all appeared in red in PM). But if I loaded up a song, the movie file opened just fine in Logic (cuz the file saves the reference to the movie file). Conclusion: PM can't find the data and that's OK cuz I don't need it to.
Let's say for argument's sake that my computer's pre-meltdown condition led to errant behavior of the PM. The only way I could figure out if PM is working correctly now (on my virgin system) is to run it through its paces. But we're talking about hours of downtime while it does its thing (I think it would be best to leave the computer alone while doing an extended scan for various reason). Is it worth the time-investment? At this point I've simply decided that it's not. Maybe I'll eat my words one day, but for now I'm comfortable with this decision.
And of course the other thing this means is that sonther will never speak to me again... So don't tell him you saw this, OK?

  • Hi, when trimming a project through project manager I get blue lines and the video is missing. I'm using PP CC 2014. Why is this?

I have tried through Project manager to save a "Trimmed Project" but when I open up the trimmed project some video is missing or is the wrong video and on the timeline these missing videos have a diagonal blue line. Any idea on why this is happening would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a Mac?  If so what version of OSX?

  • Why is there no project management integrated into the ical?

Im looking for a project manager that integrates a calendar.  I would think with all the working parents that they would need a calendar where you could see both home life AND work projects.  I have searched everywhere.  Anyone have ideas???

There is a star like button next to the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar to bookmark the current web page and a "Show your bookmarks" button next to it to open the Bookmarks in a drop down menu.
You can find "Show All Bookmarks" to open the Bookmarks Manager (Library) at near the top of the drop-down list.
If you are on a tab that is bookmarked then "Bookmark This Page" in the Bookmarks menu as well as the tooltip of the highlighted star changes to "Edit This Bookmark".

  • Why won't the project manager export all of my media when copying to a new a folder?

Trying to consolidate a project by using the project manager. It exports most of the files fine but some consistently won't copy to the new folder. Any idea what causes this? It's pretty frustrating considering I'm supposed to hand over a hard drive of the media managed project for the next steps in post very soon and would be a huge waste of time to search for all the individual files and copy them over manually.

What version of Premiere and which Resulting Project option are you using (Collect Files and Copy to New Location or Consolidate and Transcode)? Also, are the files that won't copy a specific type of file or any other details, and does Premiere provide any error information (dialog and/or information in the Events panel)?

  • Unable to Open Project Site Access Denied Issue (Project Manager)

    Hi
We got an issue that one project manager is having 12 projects, in that she can able to view 5 projects-- project sites but remaining 7 projects --- she is not able to open the project site (access denied) error is throwing when she try to open.
She is the project manager of the 12 projects and having project manager permissions on the project sites.
Please suggest any solution for this.
Geeth If you feel that the answer which i gave you is Helpful please select it as Answer/helpful.

I believe I've found the fix for this issue.  After opening a ticket with MS support and not getting anywhere with this issue I decided to do an in-depth review of all the Project and SharePoint 2013 CU's starting with December 2013 to September 2014.
To my amazement buried inside the July 2014 CU was a hotfix for this issue described almost word for word. (I will list all the relevant KB's at the end)  I contacted my support engineer inquiring about this hotfix and he stated it wasn't relevant because
the "Synchronize Project Web App permissions to Project Site" was not failing or even generating any warnings in our Prod or Test environments.  I stated that is not always an indicator as ULS doesn't always catch all relevant errors.
I informed him that I also found a second hotfix pertaining to the same issue released August 2014, apparently the first hotfix in July didn't totally resolve the issue and a second hotfix was released.  He was adamant that this would not resolve
our issue and he requested or production databases because he was unable to replicate the issue in his test environment.  The reason, you may wonder, is because he was at a higher patch level that our farm.... Obviously!  His farm had the most current
CU which included the hotfixes from July and August.  Apparently he didn't see the flaw in his logic.
I decided to install the September CU on our test farm. Low and behold that fixed the problem, even though MS support stated the hotfix was not relevant to our issue.  I learned a long time ago to take MS support comments as suggestions instead
of gospel truth, this isn't the first time they have confidently given me erroneous information.
We are currently doing further testing to verify that this CU didn't break something else.  Unfortunately these rollups are not GA and Microsoft is very clear that you should only install them if the hotfixes pertain directly to your issue.
Finding the hotfixes was a chore as Microsoft loves to create multiple KB's for the same thing and then nest (bury) them so you have to dig through four or five KB's to find the relevant fix.  I'll save you the trouble and list them below.

September CU Webcast Brian Smith and team go into depth explaining why this issue has been happening and how they fixed it.

  • Images are missing in Project Manager

I’m replacing old images with new ones in RoboHelp HTML 10.
I’ve deleted the old pictures in Design view and pasted the new pictures in. (I know this is not the recommended way but with lake of time I found it to be the fastest way and we don’t feel the need to give the files described names at the moment.)
It has worked fine until now when I noticed that some images are not showing in Project Manager. I see the “folder” Images and I see a lot off images there but some are missing. The “missing” images are shown in Design view and in the browser after publishing. But in the report Unused files the “missing” images are listed as unused.
    I have tried to
    close and reopen the project,
    generate and publish the project,
delete an “missing” image from Design view and insert it by using Insert / Image. After saving this image, and some other “missing” images, are shown in Project Manager. But not all “missing” images.
Does anyone know why this is, or more important how to get Project Manager to show all images that are used in the project (without having to go through all 154 images trying to figure out which are used but “missing”)?
    Some more facts:
    They are all gif-images.
They are all stored at the top-level in the project folder. (Are there a limit how many images there can be in the top-level folder?  Should I create a separate folder and move the pictures there?)
    HTML-code for one “missing” image:
              <img src="image7.gif" alt="" style="border: none;"
                     border="0" />
    Grateful for any input!

I would have said "Try renaming the folder containing the images in Rh's Project Manager. That sometimes fixes the problem. You can revert to the old name afterwards."
Keeping all the images, and / or topics, in the root is never a good idea. It can slow things down and it's messy.
You can move the images you can see but obviously you cannot move the others. Try moving a topic that has one of the images to a different folder and see if that refreshes. Also try deleting the CPD file and reopening Rh.
    Backup first.

  • Error in Interfacing Project Invoices to AR - No Active Project Manager

I am getting an error while transferring a projects invoice to AR.
I am running concurrent program 'PRC: Interface Invoices to Receivables' program from a responsibility that was created as per the client project security requirements.
The output  gives an error message - 'No Active Project Manager Found'.
    Note:
    - The project manager is active on the project.
    - The person record of the project manager is active with an active HR assignment.
    - The project manager role is not end dated.
When I run this same program from the standard Project Implementation Super User responsibility for the same project, the invoice gets interfaced to Receivables without any error.
    Why does this happen ?
Is this concurrent program dependent on any menu / function / profile option ? If so, which one ?

  • Images no longer showing in Project Manager panel, but in project RH8

In a project with 2400 topics and 3400 images we decided to move the images to a project_images folder so we could just remove the html folders in Production when we update.  Drag & drop images from previous location to new folder...forever!  All was good...Then we shut the project and opened it back up again and only 6 images now display in the Images/project_images folder.  In Windows Explorer all 3400 are there.  If you go to a topic in RH the images display - with the right paths.  They are picked up appropriately when you compile.
They just don't display in the Project Manager panel...making it very difficult to drag them into topics!
    We have tried:
    1.  Deleting the .fpj file in the project_images folder and adding a new image hoping it would rebuild itself
    2.  Tried renaming the project_images folder to something else - RH HATES that and just hangs.  I gave it overnight to figure it out...it never unhung.
    3.  Tried creating a new folder - again RH hangs and must be manually ended
    4.  Moved a topic with images to another location - topic moves fine.  Images move...but do not show up under Images
    5.  Imported a topic with images - the new images show fine...the old ones still are invisible.
This is two days of work moving the images...we hate to start over and have no idea if it will do it again.  We did this on another project - same problem - but moving a folder resolved it.  That is not working here.
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!!!  RH 8.02.208

Wow, what a hassle.  I never saw this issue until we upgraded to RH9 and tried to use the resource manager to link images.  I've never been as frustrated with RoboHelp as I am now after fifteen years of using it.
We've always had an "images" folder within the root of our projects.  We never saw this "image disappearing" problem until now.  After pulling my hair out for a couple of days, I think I have nailed down why this is happening (aside from the .cpd clearing).
Envision a project structured like so:
    Root Folder
       |---Folder A
       |---Folder B
       |---Images Folder
              |---Folder C
              |---Folder D
If I drag/drop a new image from the resource manager into a topic that resides in Folder C or Folder D, the image is placed in the root of the project.  Okay, not ideal.  Why don't images dragged/dropped out of the resource manager retain the resource manager's folder structure?  Another post for another day...
Regardless, I want to move the image to my images folder.  If I then drag/drop the image from the root of the project folder into the Images Folder, the rhsharedresource.apj is updated, and the link is retained no problem.  All right!  This is what I want to see, as I already have too many snippet files doomed to be in the root of the project because they can't be moved and are already causing lag when opening and working in projects.  Another post for another day...
As long as the new image is only referenced in topics residing in or beneath the Images Folder in the project's structure, the image will never disappear from
the project manager, even when the.cpd is cleared.  This is because the topics referencing the image in the Images Folder are within the Images Folder's folder structure.
If the image added is then added to any folder above the Images Folder in the project's structure -- Folder A or Folder B -- the next time RoboHelp is closed and reopened (if you have clear the .cpd checked in RH Options) the image is gone.  BAH!  GAH!  UGH!
Remove the reference to the image from the topics in Folder A or Folder B and the image reappears in the Images Folder the next time RH is opened.  Wow, magical!
So, if you never move an image from the Root Folder of the project, you will never see the image disappear from the project manager because it is at the highest level possible and every folder within the project will be beneath the image in the folder structure.
Sure, if the image disappears, you can rename the folder, add a topic, etc. the project manager refreshes and all of the images magically reappear.  But, as soon as you close RoboHelp and clear that .cpd, they're gone again.
That's what I've found.  Too bad we personally can't restructure the projects we're working on because of a dim-wit Dev call forced on us to use static URLs instead of map IDs to call the topics.
Anyway, I am thinking a project structured like this is now the way to go:
    Root Folder
         |---Images (aka Resources) Folder
                  |---Topics Folder A
                  |---Topics Folder B

  • Project Manager can´t see my .lso files

Hello logicusers, I am new at the forum and this is my first trouble: Project Manager can´t see my .lso files. I would like to start using PM but it seems to be difficult without seeing .lso files in the navigator window.
I´ve read the books, I´ve checked here for this tip and got a lot of useful information, but no solution found. I hope somebody could help me please:
    - Macbook white with LP 7.2.3
    - Reinstalled and cleaned all
    - Installed OSX upgrade 0.4.9 manually
    - Installed pro application support 3.1
    - PM Data and logic preferences deleted
    - permissions applied to "all enclosed folders"
    - Performed a complete scan in PM
If I create a new song from logic, PM can´t see this .lso file.
If I scan a external hard drive (lacie f.a.porsche) through PM, it only recognizes one .lso file from a lot of old songs, and I don´t imagine why.
Yesterday I tried this: opened PM, copied a Template song from the Templates folder to the Desktop; renamed it as "Sidload" (my particular "Autoload" term); until here, everything correct, PM seems to be able to manage "Sidload". But when I open Sidload and save the first change, and .bak folder comes, I can´t make more "visible copies for PM" of this file. Finder can see the new copies, but PM not (files that has created "itself"); so I can´t manage a song that has been copied, renamed and saved for first time -through PM, from a Template; invisible, dissapears. No saving PM data, no checking folder, no advanced search helps.
I wish to have a way to talk to logic support via mail, but I don´t know how. So I came here to beg you friends for your help. Thank you very much for being here.

yep, I have scanned at every level, from everything to just a single folder that contains song files. After scanning a folder that conatins songs on my SATA B drive (the one that PM can't find songs), still the songs will not appear.
I have copied over my songs to the drive that PM seems to see songs on and guess what? It doesn't see those songs copied over.
This is driving me so nuts I have forgotten that I engaged in this thread...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1046126&tstart=0
Does anyone know what the option in the PM's file menu "import file maps" and delete all exported file maps" does? Or what its for?
It feels to me that some sort of database or referrence list etc etc has gone very wrong, but I have already tried deleting (manually) the PM data file in somewhere in the library folder etc etc.
Using file buddy I see that PM stores the a PM database as an invisable file on each drive you have connected. Presumably info for what is on that drive. Perhaps these invisable files need to be manually deleted???

    hello all.
im curious as to what other people are currently using for
project management, wire framing, versioning, etc in their

For versioning you cannot do better than Subversion(svn) it
is just a complete God send and free to boot, plus if you use
Eclipse (if not why not) then there is a Subclipse plugin which
    makes life easy too.

  • One of the folders of Robo Help Project Manager is listed twice in Windows Explorer.

    Hello Everybody,
One of the folders of Robo Help Project Manager is listed twice in Windows Explorer. One has all the subfolders and topics of it and the other has all the subfolders but not the topics. How did I get into this kind of situation? Why do I have two folders? Can somebody please answer on this?
Since my RH project is attached to Visual Source Safe (VSS), the same structure is mirroring in VSS.

    Hi there
After reviewing the image I see that what you might think are two of the same folder are two different folders similar in name.
One is named Advanced_Functionality. The other is named Advanced_Funtionality (note the missing C).
I'm assuming this is the folder you are referring to?

  • RSC Files Not Appearing in RH Project Manager

My three-writer group has experienced a number of RoboHelp/RoboSource Control problems in the last week.
    First this is our setup:
    1. Two writers with 64-bit Windows 7, and one with 32-bit Win 7. We all have the latest patches and updates.
    2. Our RSC database is on a remote machine that has 32-bit Win XP.
After a time where our group successfully updated our project, I was given a new laptop with Win 7 (I had previously had a 32-bit Win XP desktop), we have now encountered the following problems:
    1. No one can open a RH project from version control. We go through all steps and when we open the XPJ icon it finally crashes after taskbar status messages of something like "Querying version control." It thus crashes at one of the final steps in opening a project from the database.
    2. Even on our remote machine, I cannot open a RH project from version control.
    3. For some unknown period of time, it appears that the three of us have not had our changes uploading to the database because nobody's desktop RH project looks the same. Out of the three of us, I have many--but not all--of my changes up at RSC. I have no idea where my colleagues' changes went.
    4. An unspecified number of files are listed in RSC as well in the File Status pod in RH but they are NOT appearing in the Project Manager pod. If I try to move one image file with the same name into a folder where the original should be, RH displays an error message saying that it already exists there--even though I cannot see it in Project Manager nor interface with it.
I have used RH for 11 years but RSC for just 1-2. I have never seen behavior like this before and it's really brought our entire OLH efforts to a halt. Can anyone tell me what I might do to restore, if not the database, a version of the XPJ that has as many of our changes that DID make it to RSC?
    Thank You,

  • Project Manager: How to include the Trash as an Exclude Path

I'm delving deep into the wonders of the Project Manager. Wondering if there's any way to add the Trash (on any drive) as an "exclude path" so that I can prevent the PM from going 'dumpster diving' for files in there.
While on the subject of trash (OT) I really miss the OS9 trash scheme where you had an actual desktop icon for the trash. Also, when you'd open the trash in OS9 to see what was in there, a tally of the total MB/GB of trashed files would be displayed in the finder window. But not in OSX (why?!?!). Anyway, does anyone know how to achieve either a desktop icon and/or a file-size count of trashed items in OSX?
    Thanks, and Happy New Year!
    -=iS=-

    Surrrrrrre Dahlin'.
Somebody in this forum said, it's the time of Red Red Wine.
I am following this advice. Wait, is that party over already?
Truly, the PM being as powerful of a tool it is, sometimes needs our (human) input to get it back in shape. Even the PM preferences DO GET STALE over time.
One SI after another started to load really slow over here. Sometimes I even had multiple choices from where to take the samples from. Now I know, that I have some duplicates with all my drives attached, but PM designs a structure regarding where to look first. So, I re-scanned those folders concerned. Sure enough, no more "duplicates" messages and loading time was great again. Except for files I did not access since a long time, or files I never loaded.
Yes, I trashed my PM preferences (user/library/preferences/Logic PMData).
Did go to Window > Project Manager > Functions > Expanded Scan, with all my drives attached.
    Then I went to bed.
The next morning, I saved the PM data, quit LP, restarted my computer and... voilá: EXS loading times are up to speed again.
All under the influence of Red Red Wine.
    It works well.
    Summary:
Set up as explained above, go to sleep and be amazed about the power of the PM.
    No punishment involved.
    Tschüß.

  • What are project management best practices?

I created a test project in Premiere Elements 12, and saved it in a directory named "Michaels Posters".   Then I archived the project to this directory and it created a "Copied_My\ new\ video\ project1" directory with all of the media files.  Then I added a video clip to the project, archived it again, and it created the "Copied_My\ new\ video\ project1_001" folder below.
My first real project will be a video highlights video of my 4 years old for 2013.  This will involve editing the same project several nights a week, for maybe a couple of months.  This would result in numerous "Copied_My\ new\ video\ project1_NNN" directories being created, assuming I archive the project each night.
So what is the best practices for managing a larger project like this, and avoid using a lot of disk space for the same project?

I do work with the LAST archived project file, which contains ALL necessary resources to edit the video.  But then if I add video clips to the project, these newly added clips are NOT in the archived project, so I archive it again.
The more I think about it, the more I like this workflow.  One disadvantage as you said is duplicate videos and resource files.  But a couple of advantages I like are:
    1. You can revert to a previous version if there are any issues with a newer version, e.g., project corruption.
    2. You can open the archived project ANYWHERE, and all video and resource files are available.
In terms of a larger project containing dozens of individual clips like my upcoming 2013 video highlights video of my 4  year old, I'll delete older archived projects as I go, and save maybe a couple of previous archived projects, in case I want to revert to these projects.
If you are familiar with the lack of project management iMovie, then you will know why I am elated to be using Premiere Elements 12, and being able to manage projects at all!
Thanks again for your help, I'm looking forward to starting my next video project.
