Publishing Catalyst: browser navigation/seo questions

How do you enable the browser navigation so a user can return to the previous page or move forward with the browser buttons. Also, the url is the same for each page. I have a project with multiple pages and I would like to make each page contain a specific link like xyz.com/home (when on the home page) and xyz.com/pictures (when in the gallery), etc... that way I can make external links to specific content on my site.
Also, I am concerned as to how the seo will turn out with my catalyst site. Do you have a simple example as to how I will be able to include my site in an organic search. Excuse my lack of knowledge in this area. Any information as to how I will be able utilize seo with my catalyst project is much appreciated!
Lastly, what is the best way to increase the intial loading speed of my site?

As for loading, you will want to make sure all the images are linked and elements not used on a state are removed (not just turned invisible). Peter Flynn's session on Flash Catalyst at the 2010 Adobe MAX conference covered this. You can view it on tv.adobe.com (MAX 2010 Design - Mastering Flash Catalyst | Adobe TV)
Adobe has worked with all the major search engines to provide methods to allow the content in the SWF to be indexed. Here is an article on it (SEO | Adobe Developer Connection)

Change Behaviour of the 4 Browse / Navigation Buttons

Hi!,
In documents, Iam using a new series each period/month for each type of documents, for example for a quote document in october, the series was named 200810 , for november, the series was named 200811 and so on. So each time a new period/month pases, my DocNum, starts again from 1. This gives me great control in my numbering system, but I get an inconvinience when using the 4 browse/navigation buttons, becuase If I click the last record button, it gives me the document with the biggest DocNum. Not the actual last record.

Please note: when you get something very convenient, chances are you are also get some by-products that may not be that convenient.
Unfortunately, you have to type in the number to find if this number is not in the current series selection. Another way will be making sure the number series is the right one to get the max number for that series. In another word, you can only have one last record which will match your current series selection.

Catalyst Browse - How do I remove LUT when I did not shoot slog 2 or 3?

The view on screen is enhanced (over the top) by a LUT- I suppose - even though I am not shooting in SLog.How do I change the LUT setting in Catalyst Browse? Is there a manual for Browse?AlanF

Who reads the manual when there is the internet? If it's not the LUT that's giving you trouble make sure to check the color space you are working in. On the right top corner of the screen select "Options" then try the seletion in the drop down menu under "Grade In". Also just under that you'll see color space and a loc. You can click the lock to unlock it and then change your SOURCE from a multitude of selections. Good luck,

Catalyst Browse wont install

I tried to install Catalyst Browse on this computer:Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5820K CPU @ 3.30GHz, 3300 Mhz, 6 core, 12 logic processors

Please install updated video drivers or install a video card that supports OpenGl 2.1 I have updated the driver, and the message is: I have the latest driver.I uninstalled the video card and updated the driver, to no avail. Same result.I can not make it install.

You could also try installing a utility like the one below which displays what OpenGL drivers are installed, which version, and which vendor.
Sometimes we've seen issues where hybrid graphics or swapped video cards with leftover drivers installed cause issues.

Best Practice with Browser navigation buttons

My Web Ap does a secured login and then the user is
guided to various pages via Command buttons and links.
The question I have is if the user presses the browser buttons to
go back the various prior screens appear with waht the user
entered. I do ot want this.
What is the best practice to stop this functionality and or capture a event
that f the user does this the screens are cleared?

(I believe all Faces page navigation is done via POST (command{Button,Link}).)
In our app (pre-Faces, but now we're moving to Faces, and I just can't tell you how much fun it is grafting Faces onto an old JSP/servlet app), we chose to open a new window when the user logs in, without browser decorations (i.e., navigation buttons). (This is done via javascript window.open(), with the appropriate options.)
The old window can't be closed due to Javascript security constraints, so we redirect it to another page so the user won't be confused if he or she stumbles across what looks like a login page (by exposing that old window).
After that, it's mostly an effort in user education: we just don't tell them about things like alt-left-arrow to go back or F5 to refresh or right-click anything (except View Source when we're debugging a problem). If they're "smart", we tell them "Don't do that", where "that" is either "stick your finger in your eye" or "use alt-left-arrow", depending on your sense of humor and ability to parse my idiomatic English.

A Few SEO Questions: Alt="" text and file/folder names.

I've been reading about the Dark Art of SEO and frankly, a lot of it is more confusing than I anticipated. Anyway, I'll summarise a bit here.I have read that:
File/folder names are better with meaningful words and hyphenated words. so DCM000123.jpg in a folder called galimg would be better as: /gallery-images/painting-title-here.jpg
Alt="" text can add to the content of your pages.
My thinking underneath this relates to a gallery site I built with around 200 individual paintings in it. So the site has a lot of content but not a lot of text. I wonder if I should start trawling through all of this to change the file names and folders and add alt="" text more meaningfully to help with SEO?
So if my thinking is OK, here are the questions.
How would you put the alt="" text on individual images? I imagine that it should just be a straight-forward, what-you-see description? But there are a few other options. Suppose I have an image that the artist has titled, "Cattle on a Hill" and it's an oil on canvas. I could make that into,
alt="Oil on Canvas: Cattle on a Hill" or
alt="Cattle on a Hill" or
alt="A group of cows grazing in pasture under moonlight." or
Suppose I have 20 images in a portrait gallery:
alt="Portrait. Oil on canvas: Joe Bloggs" or

alt="Man with grey hair wearing a blue shirt sitting on a bench" or

The second part of the question also includes the problem that if I have 20 images in a single gallery page and I put "Portrait painting" in each alt="" text is that going to look like key word stuffing?
Now on to the file name thing. Should the file names be portrait-painting-01 and so on or should they be Cattle-on-hill or what?
Final question: am I making too much of all this?

First of all, stay away from spaces in file names AT ALL COST.
The examples you cited would look like:
alt="Oil%20on%20Canvas:%20Cattle%20on%20a%20Hill" or
alt="Cattle%20on%20a%20Hill" or
alt="A%20group%20of%20cows%20grazing%20in%20pasture%20under%20moonlight."
to an SE crawler.
If you really want effective picutres, use Photoshop or Fireworks to embed metadata and THEN add them to your site.
Alt tags means the text that would appear if the image didn't for some reason. It also helps with accessibility for visually impaired viewers who use plug-ins to allow their browser to "speak" the images to them when the page loads.

Above is an example of how to add alt text. Dreamweaver actually loads the alt tag automatically unless you've turned it off somehow.
Either put the info in the Alt box in the properties panel, or in code view, add it between the quotes.
To the second part of your question, Alt tags are meant for SEO with the images only (Like when you search for images of a certain name or containing certain tags)
and really have little effect on the page SEO itself. For that type of optimization you want Keywords, and Descriptors in the <head> portion of the
individual page:

<meta name="Description" content="Page name, site name, business name, location, phone number, etc. goes here"/>

<meta name="robots" content="index, follow"/> (This tells search engine crawlers to index this page and each one you add it to, and follow them site wide)
<meta name="revisit-after" content="7 days"/> (This tells the crawler when to revisit for updates after it has indexed the site)
To your last question. No, you're not making too big a deal out of it, if you're talking about exposure for a business. If it's a personal gallery of your favorite vacation pictures? You just might be.

Using Business Catalyst for Newsletters - Several Questions

Hello everyone - I hope the format of this forum question is okay. I have designed our company website with Muse and we host it with Business Catalyst (webBasics+). We like it a lot and are looking to possibly upgrade it to the next package (webMarketing) simply because of the potential for newsletters (as well as all of the other benefits like blogging and the helpful modules).
My company currently uses Constant Contact for our quarterly newsletters and holiday emails and we send to about 2800 people. It seems obvious to me that we should ditch Constant Contact as we pay more than $50.00/month and I think it is very limiting as far as being creative goes. It just makes sense that I should use Bc because I already use it...and the 5,000 newsletters is only $6.00 more.
My questions are:
Are there a lot of templates to choose from? 100's? 1,000's?
Is it easy to create my own template? Do I need Dreamweaver (Only have Creative Suite and Muse)?
Is it easy to transfer an email list I have? We have software called ACT and I am a little unsure how this works but I assume there is a certain file type we can export and just upload into Bc.
Are there options to have links to social media (facebook, twitter, etc.) in the newsletters?
Are the newsletters limited in size? I think Constant Contact limited the width of an email to 600 pixels - occasionally we had text in a graphic we made in Photoshop - so things go a little fuzzy.
Add-on question from #5 Are there ways to layer graphics on top of one another in the newsletters aside from flattening it in Photoshop? This was the most limiting factor in Constant Contact.
I appreciate any help with answering these questions. Again, I think it is pretty obvious and maybe you have some things to tell me that I am completely clueless about. I basically have to make the pitch to the powers that be and I want to make sure I have a lot of the ends covered.

2) If i download Adobe BC on my computer to build the website can I also use it on another computer to keep the products updated? I read that it's online so i'm assuming this can be done for no extra cost but i want to make sure. Yes you can have SFTP access from any computer.
3) Can you host your website using godaddy or other hosts while using business catalyst? NO, BC is a hosted solution. You can although host email services third-party (i.e. Gmail).
4) Lastly, if you were to make an ecommerce website for a CLIENT how would you do it? WOuld you use business catalyst or other software such as, authorize.net and a shopping cart? BC includes a full-featured shopping cart (http://www.businesscatalyst.com/features/online-store), so you would manage products in the backend. A payment gateway like Authorize.net or Paypal will be needed (http://www.businesscatalyst.com/features/payment-gateways).

Business Component Browser Navigation Bar

Is it necessary to extend the JUNavigationBar within 10.1.2 in order to get one that displays the page-scroll (that is visible within the Business Component Browser)?
I understand that one would have to add a second iterator (for the page rowset a'la the Web-components used within the ADF chapters within the Programmers manual for 10.1.2), but one would expect that the BCB Navigation bar would be available to developers - somewhere....
Oh well, enough already. I'm going for away for a weekend down the pub... lucky me!

In the JDeveloper 10g handbook - one of the teen-chapters I think - there is at least one example using ADF (maybe with UIX) where yoiu can drag-n-drop a rowset-iterator onto a form, but then add in a second iterator to move by a set number of rows. So if your first iterator navigates ten rows, your second iterator would return the next ten rows.

Browser compatibility error question by new user

I''m a new user of CS4, first full website, and am receiving an error that apparently will effect almost every browser (figures!) The error message reads: "Found 1 errors in twoColFixLtHdr.css." The error message refers to line 8. My site is under construction so I'm including the page of code that goes with the error and am editing line 8 to red to identify.

Work Protect mode and browser navigation?

Through testing we have noticed some behaviors with Work Protect that I did not expect. Can anyone help?
We are on EP6 SP18. When changing data (ie. setting the dirty flag) on applications (CRM PCUI for instance) and then clicking some other link, button, etc. anywhere within the browser content area, the Work Protect mode fires correctly and pops up a confirmation warning.
However, in these cases:
(1)user clicks forward/backward browser buttons
(2)user manually enters URL in address bar
(3)user close browser
(4)user clicks mouse buttons for backward/foward navigation (such as 3rd or 4th mouse button programmed to do back/forward)
...Work Protect does NOT fire and catch those events.
Is this truly a limitation of Work Protect or should we investigate further? I can not find any definate wording of the above issues/limitations in any of the documentation (help.sap.com or on service.sap.com in notes).

Spry Navigation - CSS Question

I recently added spry navigation to my website (http://www.faithbuilders.com) and tweaked the default CSS to match the website a little better. Everything works well enough, but I've got a few things left to straighten out.
First, there is a gap between the right side of the dropdown menu and the left side of the sub-category menu that pops out to the right. See image below.
Is there any specific part in the CSS that affects this gap?
Second, since the submenu pops out to the right, it is hidden when the browser size is small enough to cover it. Is there a simple way to enable it to pop out to the left OR right, depending on where there is space for it?

Help Needed - Flash Catalyst & Browser Issues

Hi All!
This is my first post, hopefully someone out there can help me.
I'm launching a mini-site / brochure on my company's website. I'm having real cross browser / platform issues. Some browsers (Chrome) are displaying error 2032, if that helps?
No one on a mac seems to be able to open it up. I'm still optimising the file, so whilst the load time is longer than I'd like at this stage, it still functions fine on my computer. This is my first Catalyst project, I'm used to Flash Pro but this seemed like a much quicker option for this project.

I think I've sussed it - for whatever reason, it appears that this won't work unless you have the very latest version of Flash installed - I did this at home and it now works fine.
Could I ask what version you are viewing this on? Or if anyone else is following this; what version of Flash are you using and does this project work for you?

Ask User To Confirm Browser Navigation

I am trying to alert the user if they have unsaved data when they try to close a browser or navigate to another page.
I have written the C# and JavaScript that works when the user interacts with the browser. The problem is that the code fires when the user clicks any control on the .aspx Web page that causes a post back. I only want to alert the user when the user
clicks on the browser, not on the controls on my C# page.

Need Browser, Navigation, etc...

Sadly, I had to turn in my first pearl today due to excessive wear, and got a replacement one, but it does not have a browser icon, or navigation, etc. Also, it does not allow me to register my e-mail addresses, so I cannot access them currently from my phone. (A MUST!) How can I get these?... I tried to I registered with the Host routing table, took out my battery, reboot, etc... but nothing still... It has sent me the message that my "handheld has been registered with the wireless network," but no "necessary icons... I have even connected it to my computer and tried off of the cd., but am now stuck... thoughts? THANK YOU!

If you got the registration message, I am assuming the PIN of the new device has been placed on your carrier account.. did you do it, or the CSR with the carrier?
Sometimes it takes 2-24 hours for the BIS to provision the new device. It normally is like two hours, but removing the battery to reboot, while powered on, is a good way to check, as well as the Host Routing Table registration.
