Pull XMLDATA from Varchar2 column type

Hi All,
I have a column (data_xml) in a table of varchar2(400) type in which XML data is stored.
I want to read that data through sql query.
The Problem:
In xml there is something called <comments>AT&T </comments> which is causing a problem because of "&" symbol.
Without the & i am fine with query and result.
Need help in parsing the "&" symbol while reading the column of varchar2 type from sql query.
query:
select id, xmltype(data_xml) as col_xml, name, last_name from emp where id = 123;
NOTE: The query is just a gist to know what i am talking about. The actual query fetches data of xml field and displays, which i am able to do only if there is NO "&" symbol in <comment>AT&T </comment>.
error:
ora-31011: xml parsing failed
ora-19202: error occurred in xml parsing
lpx-00241: entity reference is not well formed
Thanks,
AAG.

I have tried the replacing character to be "&T" , but no luck , like this..
select xmltype(replace('<comment>AT&T</comment>','&',''&T''))The problem is not one of substitution but of valid XML.
is their anyway that i can get the output as this...
<comment>AT&T</comment> Not using XMLTYPE because XMLTYPE is supposed to return valid XML and '&' is not valid.
Either don't return XML because what you think is XML is not valid,
Or replace invalid characters with valid XML,
Or use something like CDATA.
But perhaps you should review what is and isn't allowable in XML?
What is consuming the XML?
If you're just outputting it in SQL*Plus then it doesn't need to be XML...
If something else is consuming and outputting the XML then it should deal with the display/output.

  • Displaying data from multiple columns into a single line graph

    Hey,I have an issue with the WEBI reporting.I have a data source that has multiple columns say ( month1, month2, month3, month4,.....month 12, month 13, ....month24) with the sales data for each month.Now say I call the month 1 to month 12 as "current year", and call month 13 - month 24 as "previous year".I want to put a prompt in the report which allows  me to select between "current year" and "previous year".Based on the prompt value we get a graph of the sales vs month ....as in if we select  "current year", then we get a graph of the sales Vs time( remember that the sales data for each month is in a different column.)and if we select  "previous year" then we get a graph of the sales Vs time for previous year..( sales vs time for Month 13, month 14, month 15....month 24).I am not able to pull data from multiple columns into a single object that I can use to populate the graphs.Any help on the same will be appreciated .

  • Pulling data from a SharePoint 2007 List

    I'm wondering if anyone has figured out how to pull data from a column in a SharePoint 2007 list to be able to dyamically generate a reaction in a flash object.
    Our designer created a dashboard of thermometers for our projects that use two variables, % complete and status (green, yellow, red, blue).
    As the end user, I want to be able to update my project in my SharePoint list and have it so that my updates automatically populate that flash based dashboard.  Right now, he's using an XML document that is stored in a folder on our SharePoint site and then simply updating the XML file when there are changes.
    It would be ideal to pull this data from the list rather than having to update and then upload the xml document to the SharePoint site - any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Sharepoint has a rich XML interface accessible via the URL.  Just point your XML.load to the List data from this interface.
    An example of XML / URL access is here:

    Hope that gets you started.

  • Import from DDL script - Why do I get domains for every column type?

    I've only been using Data Modeler for a day and my first task was to import a database definition from a DDL script.
    I noticed that every column definition resulted in the creation of a domain for the column type, with names like "VARCHAR_0_0_30" for a varchar2(30) type.
    Is there some way of avoiding the creation of domains in this way? I'd prefer to use domains only when they serve a more useful purpose such as validation by check constraints.

    Go to Preferences - > Data Modeler - > DDL and uncheck "Create Domains During Import" option.

  • PLW-07202: bind type would result in conversion away from column type

    Got this error, "PLW-07202: bind type would result in conversion away from column type", when compiling in the stored procedure editor.
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    procedure test_proc (at_incoming varchar)
    as begin
    insert into test2(itemname) values (substr('1234',1,2));
    end;
    The table test2 was created like this:
    CREATE TABLE "DMSCO"."TEST2"
    (     "ITEMNAME" VARCHAR2(30),
         "ITEM2" VARCHAR2(10),
         "ITEMNUM" NUMBER(10,0)
    Removed the substr, and it compiles.
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    procedure test_proc (at_incoming varchar)
    as begin
    insert into test2(itemname) values ('1234');
    end;
    In sqlplus it compiles fine even with the substr.

    PLW-07202: is a warning. There's a bug that it's showing as an error.

  • How to delete a custom columns from a content-type in Sharepoint Client object model

    I have a windows interface where I create a content-type and then create a column and adds that column to the content-type.
    //availableCT is my content-type where the column is present.
    //get all available fields within this content-type
    FieldCollection fieldColl = availableCT.Fields;
    clientContext.Load(fieldColl);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    foreach (Field field in fieldColl)
    //columnFromList is the column that is to be deleted
    if (field.InternalName.Equals(columnFromList))
    field.DeleteObject();
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery(); // this throws an exception
    // Additional information: Site columns which are included in content types or on lists cannot be deleted. Please remove all instances of this site column prior to deleting it.

    hi,
    you can use the below code to delete it
    using (ClientContext sourceContext = new ClientContext(cmdSpoSite))
    Web web = sourceContext.Web;
    sourceContext.Load(web);
    sourceContext.Load(web.AvailableContentTypes, type => type.Include(c => c.FieldLinks, c => c.Name));
    sourceContext.ExecuteQuery();
    List<ContentType> ExistingContentType = web.AvailableContentTypes.ToList();
    IEnumerable<ContentType> contentTypesList = ExistingContentType.Where(ct => ct.Name == "<ContentTypeName>");
    ContentType ctype = contentTypesList.ElementAt(0);
    IQueryable<FieldLink> flinks = ctype.FieldLinks.Where(f => f.Name == "<FiledName");
    foreach (FieldLink flink in flinks)
    flink.DeleteObject();
    ctype.Update(true);
    sourceContext.ExecuteQuery();
    The difference being in your code and above code is you are removeing fileds which is eventually is deleting site column but a site column cannot be deleted if is alreday being used. So you need to deled the FieldLink in content type taht way column is removed
    from content type but not from site column.
    Now if you want to delete site column you can use your code to deleted Field.

  • Storing a Non Printable -from keyboard- Character in Varchar2 Column

    Hi,
    I want to store a non-printable character in a varchar2 column. This character should be non-printable -from keyboard- for all character sets -or very difficult to print from keyboard-. It doesn't matter, whether it can be displayed on screen or not. It does matter INSTR function returns the character position of that character. It should be able to import export data without any problem for any NLS specific operating environment. For example, I plan to use chr(1) do you think it's appropriate? I appreciate your helps.
    Best Regards,
    Salim

    What is the business requirement you're trying to satisfy?
    If your database character set is based on ASCII, CHR(1) (the Start of Header) character is likely to be transferred between systems without character set conversion. Non-ASCII character sets (i.e. Big5 for Chinese data) don't necessarily share the same control characters, though, and generally won't have the same binary representation of an ASCII control character (so CHR(1) in a non-ASCII based database wouldn't necessarily return the same character that CHR(1) would in an ASCII based database).

    In this case, you can ignore the warning, as it is not correct. Sysdate and a date column have different internal data types (note the type 13 for sysdate and type 12 for the date column), and whatever internally generates the warnings seems to just compare the type number.
    SQL> insert into tmp_order values(sysdate, sysdate);

  • Using case pull infor from one of two columns

    how can I use the case statement to pull data from rows that are grouped together from a table? or is there a way to use if..then?
    my incorrect , unfinished query.....

    else return all rows that have an x's in corresponding t2.col3>
    group by t1.col1

    One table has data like this:
    STG_CLAIMANT_XREF
    SRC_EVENT_NUMBER     SRC_CLAIM_NUMBER     SRC_CLMT_NO     STG_CLAIM_TYPE
    0040283362              00402833620001                 0001          112

    0040283362              00402833620003                 0003          112
    0040283362              00402833620050                 0050          115The above represents one group of data from a group by SRC_EVENT_NUMBER,
    a subset of groups from the whole table.
    The other has data like this:
    CLAIMTYPE_X_BI_PD
    CODE_ID     PD_TYPE     BI_TYPE
    110       -1
    111            -1
    112       -1
    119            -1I want to run through the 1st table and match the STG_CLAIM_TYPEs to the CODE_IDs
    in the second table.
    I'm going to join STG_CLAIM_TYPE = CODE_ID.
    If ANY rows in the first table have STG_CLAIM_TYPEs with values in the PD_TYPE col in the second table than for that group I can ONLY return the rows that have STG_CLAIM_TYPEs = 111 for example.
    However, if No rows of type 111 exist but rows STG_CLAIM_TYPEs = 111 exist (STG_CLAIM_TYPEs with values in the BI_TYPE col) Than I can only return rows that have STG_CLAIM_TYPEs = 112
    my first try was a query that worked but returned both type out of each group. It was
    select xr.SRC_EVENT_NUMBER, xr.SRC_CLAIM_NUMBER, xr.STG_CLAIM_TYPE
    from STG_CLAIMANT_XREF xr, CLAIMTYPE_X_BI_PD BP
    where
    xr.STG_CLAIM_TYPE = bp.CODE_ID
    and
    (bp.PD_TYPE = -1 or bp.BI_TYPE = -1)
    group by xr.SRC_EVENT_NUMBER, xr.SRC_CLAIM_NUMBER, xr.STG_CLAIM_TYPE;
    will return rows 1,2,& 3. I need only 1 & 3 or just 2.
    I figured using a case statement would help me solve this issue but I am usure of how to
    implement it.
    What would you suggest?

  • Return data from all columns apart from a certain data type.

    Bit stuck on something, hope somebody here can help:
    I want to do a 'select * from ' a table, to return all columns except ones of a certain datatype. ie. I want to return data from all columns, excluding columns of datatype 'SDO_GEOMETRY'.
    This gives me the list of columns:
    SELECT COLUMN_NAME
    FROM   USER_TAB_COLUMNS
    WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'ORDER_ITEM'
    AND   DATA_TYPE <> 'SDO_GEOMETRY'; But I can't seem to take it any further...
    Now if I knew the columns beforehand, then of course I could just list them, excluding the geometry column, but this is to be used for a plug-in for MS Word, where a user can pick database columns to dynamically fill a report from - but I don't want the geometry columns as these can't be handled in this way.

    Hi Reggie,
    > connects to the database and presents a list of tables
    My guess is that this macro is written so it selects from all_tab_cols.
    Change that plugin and let it select from a view like the one above. That way, the users won't be able to see/pick anything that you are not able/willing to present for them.
    Edit:
    You could even tease your users, and let them see the columns, but not being able to pick them.
    create or replace view available_tab_columns
    as
       select decode(pickable.data_type, null, 0, 1) pickable
             ,atc.* -- narrow down yourself
         from all_tab_cols atc  -- or maybe user_tab_cols
             ,(select 'CHAR' data_type from dual union all
               select 'DATE' from dual union all
            select 'NUMBER' from dual
               -- complete positive list, yourself
              ) pickable
        where atc.data_type = pickable.data_type(+);Regards

  • Converting RPAD output from VARCHAR2 to CHAR

    I am trying to create a 1000-character fixed-width file using SQL*Plus. The query consists of 3 fields with a pad of 25 characters each, with the remaining 925 characters as filler using spaces. Using RPAD I can insert spaces between the three field values, but because the RPAD function uses VARCHAR2 to return the result it is not recognizing the ~945 filler spaces I need at the end of each row.
    Is there a way to convert the output of RPAD to a CHAR data type in the query itself? Maybe something equivalent to the CONVERT function in t-SQL?
    Query I'm using:
    Select RPAD(Col1, 25, ' ') || RPAD(Col2, 25, ' ') || RPAD(Col3, 950, ' ') From Table1;
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi,
    Welcome to the forum!
    You can ihave trailing spaces (950 of them if you want, no problem) in a VARCHAR2 column. I suspect your font-end tool is not displaying them.
    The SQL*Plus commands
    SET  TRIM        OFF
    SET  TRIMSPOOOL  OFFshould guarantee that trailing spaces are displayed in screen- and SPOOL file output, respectively.
    Also, make sure your lines are long enough:
    SET  LINESIZE    1000If you still have a problem, post a complete test script (including all the SQL*PLus formatting commands you use) as well as a query. (Something using dual or scottt.dept should illustrate the problem adequately).
