Question on how to detect remotely, computers having issues processing GPO's

We are troubleshooting multiple Win7 computer issues with SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 SUP patching--the patches fail for some reason.
In checking multiple computers, runngin GPResults shows numerous 1085 and 1096 errors, with the 1096 error indicating that the registry.pol file cannot access (the data is invalid).  After experimentation, it seems that deleting the file and rebooting
is fixing the computers, and SUP patching begins to work fine.
While we discussed simply creating an SCCM package to delete the file and reboot the computers, for all computers that are not patching--we are looking for a way to detect this issue, via SCCM HW or SW or DCM inventory methods, so we can correctly target.
Two questions:
     1.  Anyone have a method we can used to detect this problem remotely?
     2.  Any harm in just deleting this file, if we have a problem computer, in the hopes that will fix the issue?
Thanks!

The customized group policy settings are stored into registry.pol. What i can assume is the corruption of the registry.pol file & there can be numerous reason for this such as viruses, disk corruption etc. To troubleshoot issues with the GPO at the advanced
level, you can make use of uderenv debug logging.

  • Computers having issue reauthenticating

I am having issues with NPS when computers are trying to re-authenticate. Before diving into my issue I'll post my setup.
Workstations are connected to two different switches that have 802.1x enabled by port.
I have two Server 2012 domain controllers with NPS role installed. One switch is an Extreme Networks x450a-48T and the other is a x150-48T. Both are running ExtremeXOS version 12.6.3.2.
The issue I am having is that according to the switch, it is having issues talking to my NPS servers. If this happens when a computer is trying to re-authenticate, the authentication fails disconnecting them from the network for either a few seconds or a
couple of minutes. Looking at the time stamp in the logs between the NPS servers and the switch, the errors are within seconds of each other so I cannot tell which one was actually first.
On the server, I get this in the event viewer (identifiable information changed):
Time: 4/22/2014 10:50:37 AMNetwork Policy Server discarded the request for a user.
Contact the Network Policy Server administrator for more information.

    Authentication Type: EAP
    EAP Type: -
    Account Session Identifier: -
    Reason Code: 1
Reason: An internal error occurred. Check the system event log for additional information.
And then when I look at the switch, it has:
    04/22/2014 11:52:02.72 <Info:nl.ClientAuthenticated> Network Login 802.1x user host/computername.domain.local logged in MAC <mac address> port 15 VLAN(s) "user-office", authentication Radius

04/22/2014 11:50:40.56 <Warn:AAA.RADIUS.resendPkt> Resend packet to Authentication Server address (NPS1 address) current packet count is 1
I see that the NPS server says the reason code is 1 which means it was an internal error which leads me to believe that the switch cannot contact the NPS server during the time when the server is having an error. I have found the logging failures can lead
to not allowing a client to authenticate but I have logging enabled locally only and within the logging settings, I have "If logging fails, discard connection requests." so even if it was a logging failure, that should not prevent the client from
    authenticating.
Any guidance as to what is causing this problem for me and how to fix it?

    Hi,
First, troubleshoot the issue by following article.

Since error code 1 indicates NPS server error, please verify the configuration:

  • How to detect remote (client) host name or remote host address?

    Hello!
I need to receive remote host name or remote IP address in the BSP controller DO_REQUEST method. How to do it?
In Java I can use getRemoteAddr() or getRemoteHost() methods of HttpServletRequest class. But in the BSP I can not find analogues of these methods.
    Please help
    Best regards,
    Eugeny

    Hi,
I guess there is something "cleaner", but here is a solution:
    DATA l_host TYPE string.
    l_host = me->request->if_http_entity~get_header_field( '~remote_addr' ).

  • Question # 2--how to avoid the DHCP conflict issue, double NAT, etc.

I'm having a tough day wasting hours working on the TC. It once worked fine for a year. Now, I'm struggling to maintain a connection at all.
I may be doing this wrong but I'm using two screens to manage this.
    1. preferences/network
    2. the TC internet connection settings
I had written all of my settings that worked on a piece of paper. Now that I've had to reset everything earlier today by plugging/unplugging stuff per Comcast orders, I'm wondering if all of my previous settings are worthless.
Reading possible solutions on here I tried to set the connection sharing to bridge to avoid the double NAT issue. This resulted in a message that more than one computer had the same IP address and I couldn't access the internet so I went back to sharing the public IP address like I had before.
I had, and I'm trying to have now, IPv4 configured manually. When I use settings like I had before, it tells me the DHCP range is invalid. If I increase the 3rd digit/group of numbers to change the range, it re-boots but I'm unable to get to the internet.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any help?

Thanks to you both for responding.  I had actually already read that Networking 3.0 document ... and since options 1-3 were not allowing the QuickVPN to work and options 4+ resulted in lost FIOS TV services I wasn't pursuing any of those options.  Out of all of them it sounds like Bridging the Westell would be closest to what I want (enabling the Cisco router to acquire the public IP address).  But I'm not willing to sacrifice my TV functions so even that option is a non-starter for me.
Over the past two weeks I have spent some 30 or 40 hours researching and then tinkering with the configuration on the routers (and VPN client software -- QuickVPN and shrewsoft VPN client).  So I just invested about 15 minutes in downloading the free TeamViewer software.  And although I didn't want to go the "3rd party software" route I'm actually glad I tried it.  I now have a working VPN connection via TeamViewer, and through the VPN am able to use windows remote desktop just fine -- which was my goal all along.  I'm concerned about the 3rd party software / security ... but at least this works.  And I can always disable the TeamViewer Service when I'm not using the software.

  • Changing Outlook Anywhere from NTLM to Basic Auth (remote users having issues)

    Hello All:
We have a terrible vendor that is implementing our transition to Office 365. They told us we had to change the Client Auth method on the CAS to Basic (from NTLM) and all that might occur is for users to enter their creds and click "Remember my credentials".
    Not the case.
We tested internally & on cell phones - everything went unnoticed. Then peeps from the outside started getting prompted for their UN/PW. Even when they put in their valid creds & check the box, no dice. Reboots, checking Outlook client for the proxy
settings (which are now set to Basic) sometimes does, sometimes doesn't work. We are baffled as to where we force the setting (which they've received in Outlook), so the road warriors start working.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Please confirm whether the issue only happens to your external Outlook Anywhere users in Exchange 2010.
Please run the following command to check your Outlook Anywhere configuratioon:
    Get-OutlookAnywhere | fl
Confirm that the ClientAuthenticationMethod parameter and IISAuthenticationMethod are both set to Basic. If this is any changes, please run:
Set-OutlookAnywhere -Identity “E14-01\Rpc (Default Web Site)” -ClientAuthenticationMethod Basic -SSLOffloading $False -ExternalHostName mail.domain.com -IISAuthenticationMethods Basic
Then restart IIS service by using running IISReset from a command prompt window.

  • ANSWER: HOW TO DETECT Java Plugin from JavaScript

I created a new topic because the questions about
how to detect Java Plugin in browsers are scattered
    thoughout this forum.
Basically you need to employ two approaches for IE and NS.
In IE you need to try to instantiate a small applet
(not your production applet) in order to see if browser
can do it. if the browser can do it, you can make a
call applet from JavaScript in order to find version of
JRE (as well as a host of other things).
In NS you can write a simple JavaScript which will
interrogate the browser for all plugins installed. Then
ypu can make a desicion whether to pass execution to
the next(or generated) page which hosts your applet,
or ask the user to download/install a plugin.
I ecourage everybody to host a plugin on your site
rather leave default link to it which is generated by
    html converter.
    In order to run sample,
    Prerequisites:
    Java Plugin 1.3.
If you have a different version of plugin,
substitute hardcoded plugin version in JavaScript for
    value that you have.
    1. compile java file
    2. put class file in the same directory with html file
    3. load html file into the browser.
    4. press "Check Java Plugin.." button
    5. see it work
    6. examine code
    7. uninstall plugin
    8. repeat steps 1 - 4
    9. see it work
    10. install plugin.
    Sample code follows:
    **********************HTML FILE BEGIN***********

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • How to use Apple TV with Logitech Harmony remote WITHOUT having to unpair?

I have a Logitech Harmony 880 remote which I am trying to set up with my new Apple TV.
Within the Logitech software I set up Apple TV as a MediaCenter PC device.
    I've followed these instructions already.
    http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8480
The Harmony remote works great with the Apple TV if I follow these instructions to unpair the remote EVERY time I want to use it. Once I turn the TV off or switch to another activity, it loses this setting and I have to unpair again when I go back to Apple TV.
I would like to be able to use my Harmony Remote without having to unpair constantly.
I have tried to pair the Apple TV with the Harmony remote. This only served to render my Apple Remote nonfunctional and I still have to unpair every time.
I tried to use the Harmony remote's IR learning mode directly with my Apple Remote instead of using the settings from the database. I still have to unpair every time.
I tried to go into the Apple TV > Settings > General > Remote and have Apple TV learn my remote's IR. There are instructions to hold down each button until a progress bar is full. The first button is the up arrow. The progress bar never activates when I push the up arrow on my Logitech Harmony remote although I know the Apple TV is somewhat recognizing the button press because I hear an auditory beep and see the led light on the front of the Apple TV flash when I push the button. None of the arrow buttons of the Harmony remote would activate the on screen progress bar although some buttons such as the Volume buttons would.
At this point, I resigned myself to having to unpair every time I accessed my Apple TV so I thought I would get smart and program the unpair button to show up as one of the additional buttons on the lcd screen of the Harmony Remote when I start the Apple TV activity. I'm sure by now you can see where this is going. My attempts to outsmart my advanced technological devices failed dismally as it seems the unpair option of the Harmony remote will only function correctly if I first press the Devices button and then choose the Apple TV.
I was wondering if anyone had gotten a Logitech Harmony remote to work successfully with the new Apple TV without having to use the unpair command every time and if so, what did you do to resolve this issue?

I'm having the same issue except that I set up the Apple TV as a Media PC on my Harmony 770 and that gave me the unpair addition button that actually works. Per your idea, I've been using that to gain functionality of my Apple TV 3 from the Harmony remote.
However that's just a workaround. I've gone a step further and learned the raw commands and it still won't work. This makes me think the issue is on the Apple TV refusing to recognize the remote unless you press "unpair" everytime.
Is anyone else having this issue on the current Apple TV 3 firmware?

  • Hi I am looking for a way to have trace32 open multiple files on remote computers

Simply put I am looking for someone who could afford to give me a basic script (vbs) that I could run from an elevated command prompt. It would need to be available for me to type in the name of a remote computer or (mulitple if possible) and also
allow me to choose log files to open or multiple files and then open them using trace 32. Hopefully it would detect the available log files and show me what is available to choose to open... anyone know of such a thing or know how to go about setting up something
like this for people to use?
    EDIT
I was able to create a basic script to do what I wanted but I want to be able to add wildcards for the rollover logs... Can someone suggest the easiest way to do that as I am not sure how to add the wildcards directly before the .log
    here is the script.
    ' ******Created by Luis Delgado*********
'This script will get a remote computers .log files depending on which documents you enter in the "files to open on remote computer using trace32" section
'Get and open log files on remote Computer
    on error resume next
    Set WshShell = Wscript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
strcomputer   = inputbox("Enter remote computer name or leave as localhost for this computer","Get log files from a remote computer with Trace32","Localhost")
    If strComputer = "" Then
      WScript.Quit
    End If
    'Opens trace32
    wshShell.run "C:\Program Files\ConfigMgr 2007 Toolkit\CCM Tools\Trace32.exe"
'Files to open on remote computer using trace32
    wshShell.Run "\\" & strcomputer & "\c$\Windows\System32\CCM\Logs\datatransferservice.log"
    wshShell.Run "\\" & strcomputer & "\c$\Windows\System32\CCM\Logs\ccmexec.log"
    wshShell.Run "\\" & strcomputer & "\c$\Windows\System32\CCM\Logs\locationservices.log"
    !!!!NOTE!!!
What I need is for any file that starts with datatransferservices, ccmexec, or locationservices to open in trace32
my thought would be place a wild card in its respective spots but it does not work see below
    wshShell.Run "\\" & strcomputer & "\c$\Windows\System32\CCM\Logs\datatransferservice*.log"
    wshShell.Run "\\" & strcomputer & "\c$\Windows\System32\CCM\Logs\ccmexec*.log"
    wshShell.Run "\\" & strcomputer & "\c$\Windows\System32\CCM\Logs\locationservices*.log"

The roll over logs all have the same name exact the extension is .lo_ , So.. I'm not sure what you are looking for.

  • How to detect and fix an abnormal client

    Hello,
In my environment there is some abnormal client (there is only few actions in the client actions or its blank and in the sccm console the client is no or null)
Usually we run a script to rebuild the wmi repository and it fix that and if it doesn't, we uninstall and install the client.
    the script:
    net stop ccmexec
    net stop winmgmt
    del %windir%\system32\wbem\Repository
    cd %windir%\system32\wbem
    for /f %%s in ('dir /b *.dll') do regsvr32 /s %%s
    for /f %%s in ('dir /s /b *.mof *.mfl') do mofcomp %%s
    net start winmgmt
    net start ccmexec
now my question is how can we detect when the client is abnormal(on the client)? (run a startup script?)
    thanks a lot,
    Gal

There is no need to check the abnormality from the client end as you will be able to see it as Non-Client when it doesn't report its inventory for certain period and also you can get it via querying through the DB..
What I ll suggest is create a query based collection to get the list of computers that did not report its hardware inventory for certain period of time, and you could get the troublesome clients..
Below query can be used to get the computers based on the its reporting time, change the day as per your convenience..
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System where SMS_R_System.ResourceId not in (select ResourceID from SMS_R_System where AgentName in ("Heartbeat Discovery") and DATEDIFF(day,AgentTime,GetDate())<=12)
Run the below query to get it from DB, change the collection it to your all systems, and the days required..
    Declare @CloTbl table
    [Associate ID] varchar(25),
    [Computer Name] varchar(25),
    [SiteCode] varchar(5),
    [LastHWScan] varchar(255),
    [Days Since HWScan] int
insert into @CloTbl select * from(
select Sys.User_Name0 as 'Associate ID',SYS.Netbios_Name0 as 'Computer Name', SIS.SMS_Installed_Sites0 as 'SMS Site', WS.LastHWScan,
DATEDIFF(day,WS.LastHWScan,GETDATE()) as 'Days Since HWScan' from v_R_System as SYS
    join v_GS_WORKSTATION_STATUS WS on SYS.ResourceID = WS.ResourceID
    join v_RA_System_SMSInstalledSites SIS on SYS.ResourceID = SIS.ResourceID
    join v_fullcollectionmembership coll on SYS.ResourceID =coll.ResourceID
    join v_GS_OPERATING_SYSTEM sys1 on SYS.ResourceID =sys1.ResourceID
    WHERE coll.CollectionID = 'CA1000AA')P
    select * from @CloTbl
    where [Days Since HWScan] >'9'
    order by [Days Since HWScan]
    Hope it suffices..

  • Start and stop windows service for multiple remote computers

    Hello,
Can someone show me how to Start and Stop windows service for multiple remote computers using Command Prompt or PowerShell or even Java?
    Thank you

You asked a pure Windows related question at a pure Java related forum. We have advised you to look for a Windows related forum to post the question. Nothing special. It's like asking a car mechanican to help you with your migraine, he would advise you to look for a general practitioner.
But why are you so surprised and negative about this answer after all? Don't we have to help you? Don't you appreciate help? So be it then, but please stay away then if you keep this attitude.
