Questions on Initial MARS setup

I have a question on the ?Topology Discovery? piece in MARS. I will be using SNMP to discover and poll all devices in the network. What I don?t want is the MARS box to scan entire subnets looking for devices. I want to control exactly what MARS is doing with respect to SNMP scanning. I want to import sections of the network via a seed file and then have MARS ?discover? the devices in that seed file without me having to use the GUI to discover each device. My first question is how do I set up the Topology Discovery to only look for devices in my imported seed file?
Second question I have is on periodic polling. There is a section within the GUI where you can set up how often MARS will go and do polling of devices. What I want is to have the Layer 2 devices polled every 5 minutes (for CAM table changes) with other L3 devices polled periodically (maybe every hour or so?. Open to suggestions on this. How do most of you set up periodic polling?). How do you set up polling of differing devices with different polling times? I would like our access layer switches polled differently than our core routers (Is this how most of you are using this?)
Third question is if via the seed file, you can have the ?Monitor Resource Use? specification set? I did not see a field within the seed file to tweak something like this.
The documentation section also noted that ?L2 devices must be manually added? but then proceeded to use the seed file approach. I can use the seed file for L2 or L3 devices can?t I?
Any other Best Practices on initial setup would be greatly appreciated. Also any words of wisdom on what not to do would be helpful as well!
Thanks
Ken

"My first question is how do I set up the Topology Discovery to only look for devices in my imported seed file?"
my understanding is that topology discovery doesn't work until you manually configure it. importing devices via the seed file doesn't enable it. As part of setting it up, you can control it by using the "valid networks" setting.
"How do you set up polling of differing devices with different polling times? "
I don't believe this is configurable. When I pressed Cisco for details about when SNMP is used, I was told that devices may even be polled based on actual events coming into CSMARS. There is a totally separate 5 minute polling time when "monitor resource use" is enabled.
"Third question is if via the seed file, you can have the ?Monitor Resource Use? specification set?"
Can't answer this. I don't imagine it would be defaulted to enabled, but it should be easy to test.
"The documentation section also noted that ?L2 devices must be manually added? but then proceeded to use the seed file approach"
this just means that they won't be automatically added by the topology discovery process. A seed file will work.
"Any other Best Practices..."
verify that your devices are actually reporting into CSMARS as expected.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Start here (change country if necessary) and navigate to 'Password and Security', reset your security questions using the link provided, you will receive an email to your rescue address, use the link in the email and reset your security questions.
If that doesn't help, you don't receive a reset email or you don't have a rescue address, you should contact AppleCare who will initially try to assist you with a reset email or if unsuccessful will pass you to the security team to reset your security questions for you.
If you are in a region that doesn't have international telephone support try contacting Apple through iTunes Store Support.

Beware, after updating to the new version of itunes and trying to purchase a song it thinks it is a new computer and asks security questions that you never setup. Real bad! Still do not know how to reset security questions with new version of Itunes.
Any Ideas?

You don't need to buy only from the App Store. If only you knew how to change settings in the security pane of your Mac... You would know that you can change this setting. But of course, you don't need a "babysitter" to make things easy for you.

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

• How can you redo initial system setup macbook pro

How can you redo initial system setup macbook pro?

Like when Setup Assistant fires up and lets you migrate? In general, that would imply having to do a complete reinstall. And I've always been under the impression that when you do that, the reinstall software does not contain all the extra goodies that come with a new from-factory install (such as iLife).
But as Prof. Kappy wants to know, the specifics are very version dependent.

• Initial duplex setup for HP Color Laserjet 2605DN

Once duplexing is set up on the HP 2605DN Color Laser Printer, duplexing is easy.
After reinstalling, it is problematic to remember how or find instructions for initial
duplex setup.

Have you taken a look to the configuration of the Printer? I have a HP 2340 with duplex and to configure it I have to do the following:
On the Preferences Pane, click on Printing and Fax or open the Printer configuration Utility. In any case, click on the printer and choose "Configuration of the printer" (in the Printer utility this is in the pritner menu). Then you will see information of the printer... May be there you have an option to activate the duplex... In may case there is a checkbox.
But may be you have done this...

• Pre-sales technical question for a HA MARS setup

My knowledge of MARS is very limited. I am considering buying two Cisco Security MARS 25 (CS-MARS-25-K9) units.
This is to allow each system to be installed in different data centers, same geographical location.
This will be in an active/standby configuration.
Is it correct that the license is cheaper for this type of setup ? Can anyone confirm this ?

Kenneth;
CS-MARS does not have a concept of active/standby (high availability) operation - there is no data synchornization between the two units. You can have two active CS-MARS with all reporting devices reporting to both. However, when either/both of the two systems is unreachable it will not receive any events during that time and in turn not generate any incidents. The 'standby' unit is used to restore archived data for 'offline' analysis.
Each CS-MARS will require its own license key.
You can reference the 'standby' operational process here:

• Adding new dual band AEBS-initial setup question--join network or setup new

Upon the initial setup of a new dual band AEBS, do I join my current network or setup a new network?
I bought this just so I can set up a separate 5GHz band to force my newer computers to a faster network. I know that the 5GHz band needs it's own new network name. I am just wondering how to do it at the very beginning after I plug it in. I want the 2.4GHz band to connect on the network I already have, and the 5GHz band to be a new name.
Thanks!

Looks like Bob has already given you the correct steps. In addition to his comments, I would like to offer the following suggestions:
o Before trying to configure either base station to extend your new DB AEBSn, I would strongly suggest that you perform a "hard" reset on the AEBSn & a "factory default" reset on the AXn.
o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. To make it even simpler and avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the setup, attach each to the DB AEBSn via Ethernet.
o Remember each base station will only be able to extend one of the DB AEBSn's radios so try to select the appropriate base station for the job.
o I would recommend the following radio mode combination for your DB AEBS: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g/n. This will prevent any 'stray' 802.11a wireless clients from connecting to the 5 GHz network and affecting its overall bandwidth performance.

• Getting iPhone on Wednesday. Question about initial setup

Hi,
Tomorrow I should be receiving a reconditioned iPhone. The question I have is it possible to setup the iPhone and not have it copy all your address book from MS Outlook and your favorites from MS IE?
I don't want to load it down with information that is not needed.
Thanks,
Al

While you can avoid downloading all your contacts, you will find that the contacts take up about 1% of your 8GB. So I recommend installing the contacts and trying it out. You can always take them off at the next sync.
I have over 2000 contacts by the way.

• Initial Load Setup...Potential Big Problem

Hi All,
I think we have a big problem. I have posted a similiar question before, but answers are confusing to me. Let me explain our current situation and please comment.
1. We are loading billing documents, thus using VDITM.
2. We have 2 number ranges for billing documents.
3. On R3 we filled the setup tables with the smaller number of billing documents. Then in BW ran a full load.
4. The second billing document number range was kicked off in R3 and setup tables filled.
5. Now, here is where I think there is a problem. This second and final load from the setup table was setup and ran as a full load on BW. Shouldn't this have been the Delta Init?
Please comment on this:
I believe this second load should be the delta init. Then after this was done schedule the RMBWV313 job in R3 to run, for us, hourly. In BW schedule the daily delta to run at night (for us). Everything is in sync this way.
My concern is the second setup table load from BW was setup as a Full Load. After this load is done can we just schedule RMBWV313 in R/3 to run hourly and then schedule the Daily Delta in BW to run later that night.
Please comment asap...please.
Appreciate it,
Mike

Hi Mike,
You may be okay! You can run the Init Delta InfoPackage in BW without transferring data, and your delta process would then be set up. If you have the means, check your data in R/3 and verify in BW after a couple of days (couple of delta extracts) to make sure your billing totals match.
The setup tables are only good for doing your initial load (or full load).
Your other solution would be to delete the second full load in BW, fill your setup table with the second range again (to get the new billing data), and then run the Init Delta InfoPackage in BW with data transfer, and you should be set to go.
Let us know if you succeed!

• Initial Ipod setup

as a present i have been given my first ipod ever.
the thing is, i dont know anything about the initial setup: there seems to be no 'once you receive your ipod, this is what you do' information.
i have the new updated itunes (8.0) if that helps.
so my question/s are:
how long do i leave it to charge?
are there any special precautions i need to take before using it?
and is there any advice you can give me?

If it's an iPod Touch, it should have come with a little fold-out picture guide.
Basically, Download iTunes, and plug your iPod Touch into your computer. Apple takes it from there!
I know what you mean though. I was concerned about the exact same things, but electronics have gotten smarter. There is also a link to the User's Manual on the website.

• Initial ASA setup

In the initial setup it talks about using a pre-shared key named cisco. Is this key already configured, i.e. we don't have to create it.

You should probably start here..
http://cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_example09186a008060f25c.shtml
and here...

but to answer your original question, no the key is not there by default.

• General xSan questions for a new setup

So I'm looking to setup xSan. Had mainly one question. I know it's recommended that you have a secondary metadata controller server incase one goes down, but is this absolutely needed? We will have very few (like 3) people using the system so it won't be in use very often. If the controller goes down, does the system go down entirely, or can clients still access data with the potential of messing things up because the metadata server isn't functioning?
Thanks.

If you have one controller and the controller goes down, the SAN goes down and you run a higher risk of volume damage. The reason for a dedicated backup controller is so that when the primary goes south, there is another system to take of the SAN control, allowing you to complete writes and shut the volume down cleanly.
If the system is not going to be used that often, are you sure Xsan is the right solution for you? Even if you try and scrimp to save money and make a workstation a backup controller, you are still going to spend about $40K for the solution ($20K for a single RAID array, $7k for a dedicated controller, $4k for the FC switch (you should get two), wiring costs, redundant power, cooling, etc). That is a lot to spend for something that is not going to get much use.
Oh, and don't go easy on RAM. For your controllers get 2 Gigs per SAN volume and at try to leave 4 Gigs as overhead for the OS and other services. Don't run anything else on the main controller other than DNS and Dir Services (unless you are doing AD integration).
Hope this helps
