Rapid database growth - how to check?

We have been experiencing rapid database growth in the past few days.
How do we check what is causing this?
We are on ECC 5.0 / Win / SQL Server
Thanks

  • Database slow; How to check the Oracle query timings

    Hi,
I have a quick question regarding a troubleshooting iam currently working on.
We have a J2EE application runnig on WLS 81 SP3.
We are experiencing a problem where the customer response time on our application is "too slow". We checked our N/W and they seems to be OK. The Iplanet webserver and BEA application servers looks good but on the Oracle database box - i saw "iowait" (when doing top UNIX command) to be 50-60 % which is extremly high. We are suspecting this to be our issue as the "iowait" is very high at the DATABASE box hence causing BEA servers to show "slow response" on certain pages which are database accentric.
Now, in order to proove that the queries are taking "too longer" to execute from the time BEA server requested and it actually got the reply back from database, i need to dig down and get some "profiling" (due to some political reasons, i can request to turn on profling at the moment) done. So, is there any way i can verify the response time when the BEA server requested some information from the database and the time when Oracle database responded with all the information requested ?
    thanks for your help,

Yes. Create a Date object prior to the database call. Then create another one when the call completes. Convert both to mililseconds and subtract. You will have network latency in that statistic, but especially if you are using connection pools, the vast majority should be database access.
Another option is to turn on tk_prof or create an EXPLAIN plan table in Oracle. That will show the 'cost' of each query. Also, try running statistics on the database, that should help the optimizer.

  • How to check Database Growth for a DB on ASM?

    Hi there
I have been using the following script to check the database growth (for DBs on Filesystem):
    SELECT b.tsname tablespace_name ,
      MAX(b.used_size_mb) cur_used_size_mb ,
      ROUND(AVG(inc_used_size_mb),2)avg_increas_mb
    FROM
      (SELECT a.days,
        a.tsname ,
        used_size_mb ,
        used_size_mb - LAG (used_size_mb,1) OVER ( PARTITION BY a.tsname ORDER BY a.tsname,a.days) inc_used_size_mb
      FROM
        (SELECT TO_CHAR(sp.begin_interval_time,'MM-DD-YYYY') days ,
          ts.tsname ,
          MAX(ROUND((tsu.tablespace_usedsize* dt.block_size )/(1024*1024),2)) used_size_mb
        FROM dba_hist_tbspc_space_usage tsu ,
          dba_hist_tablespace_stat ts ,
          dba_hist_snapshot sp,
          dba_tablespaces dt
        WHERE tsu.tablespace_id    = ts.ts#
        AND tsu.snap_id            = sp.snap_id
        AND ts.tsname              = dt.tablespace_name
        AND sp.begin_interval_time > sysdate-7
        GROUP BY TO_CHAR(sp.begin_interval_time,'MM-DD-YYYY'),
          ts.tsname
        ORDER BY ts.tsname,
          days
        ) a
      ) b
    GROUP BY b.tsname
ORDER BY b.tsname; And I think it always gave me good results until I ran this script on a DB (10.2.0.5) on ASM.
Is it because databases on ASM are maintaied differently OR is it that most proabbly there has been no activity on this database in the last 7 days? I even ran this query for last 90/180-days and it still returned me following results:
    TABLESPACE_NAME                CUR_USED_SIZE_MB AVG_INCREAS_MB
    SYSAUX                                   574.38            .36
    SYSTEM                                   514.69              0
    DATA                                    1593.25              0
    IDX                                         .06              0
    UNDOTBS1                                  69.06          -3.84
    USERS                                     96.13              0Thanks in advance!

I have no reason to believe tablespaces under ASM are maintained differently, so the most likely explanation is change in DB activity.
What is your AWR retention? The default is 7 days, so if yours is set at the default then running the query for 90/180 days would not give you more information.
If you want to get useful output from your scripts, you might need to adjust the AWR retention and your SYSAUX tablespace respectively.
If the DB is monitored by Oracle Enterprise Manager(OEM), you can do tablespace forecasting based on the metrics collected by OEM. I did a presentation about this (NYOUG,VirtaThon) a while back:

  • How to monitor the database growth?

    Dear All,
How to monitor the database growth in SAP.
Is there any t.code available to check the same.
    advance thanks,
    Sundar  C
Note: suitable answers will get maximum reward points.

    Hai,
You can check the database growth using tcode -db02.
and also use tcode-db02old(if the SAP is Netweaver2004s version)  and click on space statistics for monitoring the datbase growth,
    Thanks and Regards,

  • The database structure has been modified - how to check if it happend?

    Hello,
I have a question. How to check if the database structure has been modified? I know that there is shown a messagebox after creating table and adding some fields, but sometimes this message appear after some seconds. The problem is that I want to create table and UDO for this table, and until database structure is not modified I got an error message. If I wait and DB strucuture modifies then UDO is creating correctly.
My question is - does anyone know how to check if database structure has been modified?
    Regards,
    Hmg

    Hi Szymon,
I guess you are stuck up in a kinda scenario, where in, you will be populating a form with values, before the structure modifies, if this is going to be your problem, I can help you out with a work around.
In the beginning of the process, before the creation of the UDO or tables, set a boolean value to false, and once all UDO's and Tables are created, only then, should you make it true and only after the boolean becomes true, you should proceed with populating the values from the screen.
I really ament sure what your problem is, but one of my guys faced this problem, I then, thought even you might have a similar problem.

  • How to check SSO user from database?

    Hi:
I've posted this topic in Forms forum:
How to check SSO user from database?
then as I've been told, it's better to post it here, so ...... here is the question:
I'm writing a "before delete trigger" to insert into log table before delete. Is there a way that I know from database the current SSO user when SSO users share one database user?
Just like in Oracle Application Express there is v('APP_USER') to know the current user.
    Saad,

End users are manipulating data through Oracle Forms(and SSO through portal) and the thing I need is to trace the SSO username from database without modifying forms, I mean purely from database taking into consideration that SSO users are sharing one database user. Is it possible?
    Saad,

  • In ecatt - how to check at database level using ABAP

    Hi,
How to check at database level using ABAP in Ecatt tool.
say,for example I want to check a particular sales order is invoiced or not ,at the database level and if it is invoiced I have stop proceeding to invoicing of that sales order number.
Could anybody suggest on this with an example?
    thanks.

    Hi,
you can use the command GETTAB to access single db records.
Full specified or partitial specified keys can be use at GETTAB. It will return always only one record, also if a couple could match your selection.
For more advanced scenarios you can also use eCATTs Inline ABAP. In a block between the commands ABAP. ENDABAP. you can code ABAP statements, e.g. SELECT ... INTO TABLE ...
eCATT script parameters of type 'V' defined in that script using ABAP/ENDABAP will be transfered into the ABAP block and back to script after ABAP perform.
    Best regards

  • How to check my job name from the database...

I have written one job scheduler which is as follows :

what is the command used to check the job_name ????You can use USER_JOBS view to check. But, is it not that you have just created the Job, so you must be knowing it?
and how can i ensure that my job scheduler is running properly...???If USER_JOBS.FAILURES is Non Zero, that means the Job has encountered a problem that needs to be Investigated. Similarly, the LAST_DATE, LAST_SEC, NEXT_DAY, NEXT_SEC can be used to determine if the Job has been running successfully.
if you are on 11g, you should consider using DBMS_SCHEDULER.

  • How to check total size of attachment stored in database?

    Hello guys,
Firstly I'm new to this forum & SAP Basis. Therefore i want to apologize if i'm posting in wrong area.
Actually I want to know how to check total size of attachment that have been uploaded in ECC.
From the current database size, how can i check how much space have been used to store attachment such as pdf, doc, xls and tif. I  want to know how much space have been utilized by those attachments from August 2010 until now.
FYI, those are PR, PO & MIGO attachments.
Where do i start? What are the tables to check? Which table keeps record of the attachment size? etc.. etc..
Really appreciate if you guys can give me some guideline.
    Thank you & Rgds,
    fafizah.

    Hi,
As such there is no direct way to do this but if you will able to find out which all table stores the attachment then you can find out the size of those table from database level.
    Thanks
    Sunny

  • How to determine database growth for new B1 instalation

    Hello B1 people,
I'm working on the capacity planning of my new business one project and must know how to determine database growth. Does anyone did something like that before?
    Wich tables should I consider?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Gabriel,
I think it is difficult to make any predictions about database growth because this depends on the volume of your business transactions, the number of users, the continuity of your master data...
For example a small number of users can create a lot of transactions (accounting, logistics) with big documents like sales orders with more than 100 items, or a lot of users who primarily look up things but only create small transaction won't create too much data and thus influence database growth in totally different ways.
You should collect information about the volume of daily business to make any forecasts.
If you start with an empty database, the first big growth will be when you upload your master data, but if only few business transactions follow, you shouldn't use that first increase for your calculation.
Is this your very first B1 installation, or do you already have B1 systems running? If you use the EWA service on a running B1 installation on a regular basis, then you will get a good impression of database growth and transaction volume but you should only use this as a basis for your calculation if the business of the new installation is similar to already running company's.
    Hope that helps,
    Sandra
