Re: WRT350N ----- Very poor Wireless signal strength from my router

I have a WRT350N router.  I had it for a year now.   In the begining the Wireless Signal strenth was good.
I used to get 4-5 bars in my bed room which is about 10 meters from the router.
Now I have my laptop sitting 1 feet away from the router and I get only 1 bar.
I upgraded my firmware.  I rebooted my router a few times still no luck.
Current Firmware Version:  v1.04.4 build 003 Jul. 14, 2008
Can any one tell me whats the problem. More importantly can some one help me resolve this problem.
Thanks
Sunny

As you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 30 seconds and reconfigure it from the scratch, as it is advisable to reset the router after upgrading the router's firmware.
On the router's setup page,Under Wireless tab..Give unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID). Change the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz... Under the Advance Wireless tab, change the Beacon Interval to 75 and click on save settings.... Now,check.

  • VERY Poor Wireless Signals

Hello everyone! I have a Linksys WRT54G v8 Wireless-G Broadband Router. I receive VERY poor wireless signals from it. There are no frequency interferences, physical obstructions, or anything like that. I have tried channels 1, 6, and 11 (non-overlapping channels), but did not seem to notice a difference. How can I adjust the Wireless -> Advanced Wireless Settings in order to improve the wireless signals? Thank you!

    Hi
Is the firmware up to date ?
If not , then upgrade the firmware .
     U can even try channel - 9 !!
Advance wireless settings : RTS threshold - descrease by 42.
                                                  Fragementation - decrease by 42.
Beacon Interval - change to 75 or 50.
    Observe the settings.

If you gave some information on what network equipment you are using (make, model, version) and where you are experiencing signal problems it would help in giving advice.

  • Why does the wireless signal strength rise/fall on my Mac?

About two months ago, the wireless signal strength (from an Airport Express wireless router) on one of my Macs began to fluctuate.  This machine is an adjacent bedroom from the router and has never experienced this problem until recently.
My other Mac sits two feet from the router and is fine.
I have moved the router a few feet in every direction with no change; have rebooted the Time Warner modem and router twice.
Every trick I know has failed to make a difference.
    Any thoughts?
    Mac in question: OS 10.6.8
    OK Mac 10.9.2
    Router is two years old.

    Hi ....

Your Mac has been infected with the flashback trojan. The fix is relatively easy.
Installing this update Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8 will remove the flashback variants.
Restart your Mac after the update is installed.

  • E3000 poor wireless signal

I recently parted with my ancient Linksys BEFW11S4 router to get the E3000.  I live in a 2 bedroom apartment, not very big.  The old router's wireless signal didn't reach the living room about 20 feet away.  I was under the impression the E3000's wireless signal strength was much greater.  However I was disappointed to find out that my PS3 and Laptop are still not able to connect to the internet.  My laptop will sometimes get connection, but only 1 bar or 3 at max.  The PS3 does not pick up the signal at all.  It is broadcasting mixed so my PS3 should pick up the 802.11 g and the laptop 802.11 n.  However neither is performing as advertised.  The E3000 is designed to support a 2 story house wireless but it can't even support my small apartment.  Am I doing something wrong?  Why is the signal strength so terrible?

I am having a very simalar issue with my E3000. I was running only G with my E3000 becuase of a compatibility issue with a WGA54G. I tossed the WGA54G and got a D-Link DAP1522 so that all my devices (PS3, Netbook, iPhone) would be N. I have a few questions.
What should my real world transfer speeds be? I am transfering from a NAS drive (not using the USB port, an Ethernet NAS) and getting 1.5MBps which isn't any faster than when I was on G. If I use 5ghz band the speeds are much worse. I tried every channel with both 2 & 5ghz and very little difference between channels although a few were worse than others.
I haven't realoaded firmware yet and I haven't changed the advanced settings so I will be doing those next.
I have seen a few time to set these settings:
"Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304"
For my information how are these setting supposed to help me?
    Thanks.

  • Can I determine my wireless signal strength?

I'm using a Verizon router MI424WR. is there a way to tell the signal strength I'm getting? I'm using a wireless network adapter for my TiVo box in the other room. My signal is not always good but don' Know if the strength is poor because of my wireless network adapter or my router.

Your TiVO I would imagine can display at least a part of the picture as to how the Wireless signal strength is. If it doesn't, should you happen to have a Laptop, placing the laptop near the TiVo may give you an idea of the strength as well since that would more than likely report the strength.

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

  • LinkSys e3000: Poor wireless signal

    Hi,
I have configured a new LinkSys e3000 as as wireless router in our house.
I have left the configuration as default (only secured it and turned on the DHCP server).
I have only turned on the 2,4 GHz network ( because the 5GH had an even shorter range).
Everything works and all my devices can connect to the router and access the internet.
However i find the singnal strenght of the router to be very poor.
Already in the next room it drops to 60%. And in some rooms on the 1st floor the signal drops completly.
This happens not even 20m away from the router in an ordinary "family house".
Is there a setting somewhere which could increase the signal strength ?
I noticed that the router has no antenna, can one be bought and attached so the signal increases ?
The firmware version is 1.0.02 and i found a newer ony on your web 1.0.03. Would it help to upgrade to it ?
Any onther ideas how to improve the signal strength ?
    Thank you in advance
    Hynek

There are built in antennas for this router.
Connect the computer to the router and open the setup page of the router.
Go to the wireless tab and change the Wireless channel to 11. Save the settings.
Click on Advanced wireless settings sub tab. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.
    See if that helps you.
You can also try to upgrade the firmware on your router.
Connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the router. Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 10 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.

  • Very poor wireless reception on HP Envy 17t-j000

So I just recently got a  HP Envy 17t-j000 quad edition (Windows 8), which seems to be having some wifi issues
I opted for the cheaper non-bluetooth adapter, the Realtek RTL8188EE, which at present seems to have almost zero documentation on the internet. The Realtek website doesn't even show any record of it!
Anyways, here's the problem: I'm getting very poor reception with it, to the point where one of my two wireless routers has only very intermittent and horrendously slow connectivity, and the other will work a room away but no further (and also sometimes drops too, but less frequently). Outside of this range, I can still see these networks, but cannot always connect. If I do manage to connect, it will show a strong signal (4-5 out of 5 bars) but will never actually load anything. In fact, though I'm not sure this is relevant or not, I have never seen any networks with less than 3 out of 5 bars for signal strength.
Meanwhile, a number of other devices work at a much larger range and without dropping the connection as this computer does. This includes a year old HP (I forget the model) and a five year old Acer. The speed on my faster router doesn't appear to be very different between the HP Envy and the other two.
    I have:
    * Done a number of restarts of the network modem and both wireless routers
    * Verified that the driver on the wireless adapter is up to date and reinstalled it
    * Checked to make sure there are  no antivirus/firewall/other programs systems that could be interfering
So, does this sound like a just a crappy wireless adapter or could this be some sort of software issue or defective hardware? Also, if I were to just replace this with another wireless card, what sort of things do I need to be concerned with in order to make sure the replacement is compatible with the system?

    OK Boys & Girls - - here's what I did - -
First - the Envy X2 is having similar problems - but my laptop is the 17t-j000 quad
so this IS the correct thread - -
I used the HP support assistant - - it installed an updated BIOS -
The WiFi still shuts down at 8 - 10 min watching Netflix (no mouse or user inputs - Max signal strength indicated)
    {Yes - I have disabled allowing the machine to turn off power to the WiFi card in the driver section}
Loaded the Softpaq mentioned above (quoted below) - - 200MB - had to be SOMETHING in there ??
It loaded without a problem - - strange thing is - the Intel Driver date stayed the same: 9/17/2012
Tried the WiFi - - still shuts down at 8 - 10 min
Went back to HP Support Assistant - -
    NOW it says - - I need a new WiFi package ?!?
    So - I download and installed THAT - -
Back to Netflix - - and so far - has been NO SHUTDOWN ?!?
2 episodes watched - still connected - fingers crossed
Your mileage may vary - -

  • Why do I have such poor/sporatic signal strength?

I have an iBook G4, and ever since I bought it i have had trouble with wireless connections. In my home, a small one bedroom apartment, I have and airport station. Connected to this is an external antenne. This is hooked up to a PC. My laptop has an airport extreme card. I have double checked and the card as well as the airport base station are installed correctly.
I am able to connect to the internet in my apartment. However, my wireless signal is always very weak. I am currently less than ten feet away from the base station and I am at less than half signal strength. Inside of my bedroom, approximatly twenty feet away from the base station I have little or no signal strength depending on what part of the room I am in. The signal strength varies constantly and does not allow me to connect to the internet.
My boyfriend has a PC laptop and is able to connect fine anywhere in the apartment. Also, he is able to detect several other wireless networks, where as I am only able to detect one.
When I am outside of my home and attempt to use hotspots, at school or coffee shops, I have little or no signal strength and am almost never able to connect to the internet for more than five minutes at a time, if at all.... All around me I always see PC users, as well as other Mac users serfing the internet without trouble.
How can I fix this? Should I buy a replacement airport extreme card? Is there any external USB devices that would help?
Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide. I am desperate and will take any suggestions.

    Hi Kat,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
An improperly inserted antenna is the usual cause of weak signals. It takes considerable force to get it all the way in. This article illustrates a properly attached antenna.

  • Problems with poor wifi signal strength, need help?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? This is a lengthy explanation. Thanks in advance.
I have a 3rd generation Airport Extreme wirelessly bridged to a 4th generation Time Capsule. I have noticed only mild increase in signal strength.  Surprisingly I have only 1 – 2 bars of signal strength when standing next to the bridged Airport Extreme. There are areas of the house that continue to have very weak coverage ranging from 0 – 2 bars depending on the day and others that continue to have no wifi coverage.
The house has Cat 5 cable in all rooms. Most rooms only have a phone jack wired to the end of the Cat 5 cable but two rooms have data ports. All the wires (phone and data) run to the same junction box and are connected to, what appears to be, a simple parallel bridge.  (There are a couple unused access points on the bridge. A few years back, I ran an additional line for a phone by simply pressing the colored wire into the corresponding site and the phone works fine)
It was suggested to plug the two routers directly into the data ports rather than have them communicate wirelessly. When doing this, I had no signal at the other end and the phone stopped working.
What is the best way to fix the weak wifi signal problem?
    1.     Do I need to tweak my current wireless set up? (FYI, In the Airport Utility, both devices are listed and have green dots)
    2.     Do I need to buy an additional Airport Extreme to bridge to the Time Capsule to cover the current dead areas? (unless there is something I should do different in the set up, hesitant to do this, since I have only seen a marginal boost with my current bridge)
    3.     Would it be better to use the existing cat 5 cable and create a functional “hard wired” network that I can use to connect the two wireless routers? (If this is the answer, is this something relatively simple that I can do myself or should I hire a professional?)
    Thanks again.

It was typical awhile back, where you have "whole-house" Ethernet running back to a patch panel to use the cable runs for both data and phone service. This works fine as long as you only wanted 100 Mbps Ethernet (or Fast Ethernet) connections for data. Gigabit Ethernet requires all of the twisted pairs in the CAT-5 cable and cannot share any of those pairs for phone lines.
So any wall outlet that is wired for both phone & data will not provide Gigabit Ethernet ... unless there are at least two CAT-5 cables going to that outlet. I am only mentioning this as to the potential for reduced bandwidth on some of your connections as all of your AirPort base stations are Gigabit capable.
As far as "weak" signals, I am assuming that you have configured all of your AirPort base stations for a roaming and NOT an extended wireless network ... correct? Even if you already have, please review the following Apple Support article to make sure you didn't miss anything. Please post back your results.

  • Poor Wireless signal

I just bought a HP 20-2110d All-in-One Desktop PC. Had so much difficulty setting it up as it had a poor wireless connectivity. Always only showing 2 bars and connectivity cutting off every now and then.
Called HP support this morning and they led me to "device manager" and reinstalling network adapter. But it still showed a poor signal after that. As my neighbour's signal was showing up, the HP help staff suggested that it was due to signal overlap. He asked me to call my service provider and ask for isp signal channel to be changed.
My question is: why is it that other devices such as my handphones and laptops not have this problem? The signal shown is so much stronger and there have been no connectivity problems.

    You are welcome.
Some wireless cards are not very powerful.  It would be good if you could move the router closer to the computer to see if that helps the situation.

  • Poor SSID signal strength

We have 4 SSID configured on our WCS 7.0.164.3.  The last SSID signal strength is not as good as the previously configured SSID, why?

Do you have multiple Wireless LAN controllers? Is the SSID being broadcast on both controllers?
If the SSID is hidden on half of your APs, a client selecting the SSID from the list will only roam between the APs that are broadcasting the SSID. Same applies if someone manually enters the SSID. It will only roam to APs where the AP is hidden.

  • Signal strength from Airport Express dropping to imac (but not Macbook)

I have an Airport Extreme to control my home wireless network. My Macbook Pro works all over the house with no reception/signal strength problems. But my imac, which is situated about 15/18metres away is dropping signal all the time. Any ideas or advice please?
    Cheers
    Simon

The antenna opening for the iMac is on the back of the screen, so make sure that the iMac is not pushed back into a cabinet or even a corner of the room. Sometimes a small change in location will make a big difference in reception.
Also check to make sure that you do not have other electronics near the iMac like a cordless phone, ampliifer, satellite receiver, TV, etc.
If the iMac is near a window, it may be picking up wireless interference from another network in the neighborhood near you. Try to move the iMac away from the window to a different location.
Power off the iMac and restart after any change in location so that it will establish a new connection.
If you try everthing and the results seem to be the same, then you might want to think about taking the iMac to an Apple store in your area to let them have a look and check out the wireless card in the device.

  • Macbook Pro Wireless Signal Strength

I am confused. My wife and I both bought new Macbook Pros last week. She has the stock 15" 2.2ghz and I have the 2.4ghz with 160gb 7200 rpm drive.
On my machine, the only way I can get 4 bars of signal coverage is to be within 5 feet of our router. On her machine she gets 4 bars all over the house. Same for my ibook g4 800mhz "dinosaur". That one gets the full strength as well.
Did I get a lemon? It seems to work well even with 3 bars, but I travel for a living and I depend on wireless services in hotels to "live my digital life." Is this going to be a problem? Waiting for a night in a hotel, which should be any day now, but I'm kinda wondering if I should talk to apple about this....
anyone have a similar experience with only 3 bars? Also, does 3 bars mean anywhere from 75%-100%? Is there a way to find an exact percentage of signal strength? Thanks for any and all replies.
    Rob

What is the type of router you use? Check with it's vendor support page, as mine needed an upgrade after 10.4 and the dreaded network upgrade.
Also, go to a free internet cafe (like Tully's) and see if you can duplicate this. That will narrow it down to your home router or the machine. My Vista machine also had problems with my wireless network until I updated my wireless card software for it. XP would run fine, 5 bars, Vista, 2 bars.
There have been a lot of odd issues with the updates to all these wireless cards, moving through a variety of new standards including problems with WPA and other security protocols. Given where I live, I simply disabled security on the network, assuming that there are not many people out here wanting to hack my network. In a city or suburb, I'd probably be using security though.
