Reactivating a stolen Ipad's 3G - way to track?

Greetings! New to the forum.
I did a few general queries to see if this question has been answered before. There are variations of Apple not being able to track the GSM signal in a unit as it's a violation of your rights. HOWEVER. I did not find an answer to my question.
If someone who stole my original 3G Ipad in April was dumb enough to try and activate this many months later, is there a way to try and see if it is registered to someone by way of the ESN? I didn't report it stolen as it was taken at a fashion show we were using it at and there was no way to track who it was. I've since bought a new one, but every time I think about it - it ****** me off.
Wasn't sure if there was a way, like I said, to track via ESN once registered with ATT.

Probably, with a court order and enough time and money or, alternatively, just let one of the pretty girls on CSI do it from their tablet in a New York minute.
In any case, have you worked with your cellular provider (ATT, whoever) to report it as stolen? I don't think they'll do anything in helping you with any locating info, absent once again a court order or something equivalent, but I think they can at least tag your ESN so lock it down and ensure it can't get another account tied on to it. (Caveat: I don't really understand everything I know about ESN's, so beware ...).
