Reader XI won't exit memory

Hi!  I'm ripping my hair out over this problem.  I have a Win7 machine with Reader XI (11.0.08).  If I load up a couple of PDFs and there's two Acrrd32.exe processes, one taking up 25% of the CPU.  After a while there's tons of them taking up all the CPU time.
I. Have. Tried. EVERYTHING.  I've tried the properties on the EXE fix, I've tried the welcome screen fix, the Internet options in Preferences fix. countless registry fixes from 10 pages of google search results and nothing I've done will fix it.
Since this is Adobe, how do I fix this problem?
Thanks!

Hi meshman333,
Thank you for posting on the Adobe forums, kindly try the steps mentioned below, hope it helps.
1) Click on Start>run>MSCONFIG
2) Go to services>hide all Microsoft services and then disable all services.
3) Disable all the start up items and restart your machine.
4) Launch adobe Reader and observe the behavior.
If everything goes fine, it is one of the processes that is conflicting with Reader.
Thanks,

  • Program won't exit when reading in gif?!?

    Hi,
I have written a class (see code below) that has a single method to read in two gifs, superimpose them, add text and then write the result to a jpeg file.
I test this in a simple main method (again see below). javac test.java, java test
The problem is that the program will not terminate. The final System.out.println() command is displayed in the terminal. It has to be halted with ctrl+c.
I have traced the problem to the image being read in! If I comment out the images being read in - in the MapMaker constructor (also commenting out where the images are used) - the program terminates correctly.
There are no exceptions flying around either!
Any ideas? I guess some system resource isn't being cleared, but don't know how to do this!
I can't use System.exit() because this class will be used in a .jsp page that will use the jpeg created!
    Thanks in advance

open your running processes (right click at the bottom of your screen>start task manager>processes) and force dw to end.  make sure you've saved any work you want to save.
then restart your computer and make sure dw closes properly.

  • App won't exit.

Hi, I've been having a trouble with my iPhone 4. It gets stuck in an app and it won't exit it. The home button only works for accessibility options. The power button won't work. The screen just won't get off (it won't block), it just won't go off! I already restored it once, I don't wanna do that again...

  • Lightroom Won't Exit

I updated to Lightroom 4.4 and since then I have noticed that LR won't exit.  When I click the X to close the program it disappears from the screen... but when I hit ctr-alt-dlt it's still running in the processes menu.  This becomes problematic because I have issues with 4.4 so I reloaded 4.3... and I am beta testing 5... but when I X out of one I cannot load the other while the process is still running.  I have to manually end the process before starting another session of LR.  This is true even if I want to run another session of the same version.  In other words, if I am working in LR 4.3... close the program to work in Word... then want to go back and work in LR4.3 again... nothing happens when I click the desktop icon because it's still running in the processs menu.
    Win 7 (64), 16GB Ram

    I would suggest this:
I don't think it's your presets. Rather the fact that you have Lr 4.3 and Lr 4.4 installed. They use the same files, so closing one will leave some of the processes running.
    But to cover all bases:
Note down the folder where all your presets are stored. Then copy the folder with all presets to a different location.
Open Preferences and note all settings. Do the same with Catalog Settings.
    Then un-install Lr 4.3 and Lr 4.4.
Then manually delete the presets folder and also the Preference File. See here for where to find the Preference file for your OS: http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroo m-4.html
Re-install Lr 4.4 only. Open Lr. If it comes up empty and wants to import, cancel Import and go >File >Open catalog .... Navigate to your catalog (the catalog-file with the extension <  .lrcat>) and select it. Redo your Preferences and catalog settings. Check if Lr closes properly before you move your presets back to the previous location. When you are sure that Lr closes properly, move your presets back.

  • Address Book Won't Exit If...

I opened up Address Book and found two cards for my account. In the process of consolidating them, I opened up one in a separate window to edit the picture. Then
back in the main window, I deleted that card. The window for that card remained open. Then I tried to exit Address Book and it simply won't exit and the window no longer responds to any input. Bug?

That sounds like a bug, although I can't make it happen. If you can do that again, open /Applications/Utilities/Console.app and see if Address Book reported any error messages.

  • Java plugin exits memory.

Our application employs an applet to move large amounts of data over TCP and UDP sockets. When we run multiple instances (different tabs in the browse but share the same VM) the applets will run for a while then Java.exe will exit memory (i.e. disappear from the active process list). Note that we predominantly run on windows.
I attached a debugger to Java.exe and noticed that just before it exits, it reports a large number of Access Violation exceptions:
    First-chance exception at 0x01f96c92 in java.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00150100.
    Followed by several lines like:
The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0x86c) has exited with code 0 (0x0).
    Finally:
The program '[4060] java.exe: Native' has exited with code 0 (0x0).
As far as the applets are concerned, the first sign of trouble is that the socket returns a disconnect (e.g. a read returns -1). The applet goes through its shut down sequence but encounters many exceptions as it tries to make callbacks into our JavaScript code that is responsible for displaying status messages. For example:

This happens on 1.7.0_13-b20 and 1.6.xx, also, the amount of data transferred by the applet does not matter. i.e. I could transfer huge amounts through one applet without problem but could not transfer lesser amounts over parallel applets.
Finally, I gave the VM more memory (-Xmx parameter) without change in behaviour.
I would appreciate any pointer on how to proceed to troubleshoot this behaviour and see what are we doing to make the JVM behave this way.

  • Won't exit apps

I've had the MacBook Pro for about 2 weeks now and the first irritant I need to fix is why it won't exit the application when I click the red x in the upper left hand corner. It's about a 50/50 chance that it will or it won't exit. I'll click, nothing. I'll click again, nothing. I have to play around with it before the application will close. If I can get this resolved, we'll discuss why the web pages periodically turn yellow.... Thanks.

Hi! You've discovered one of the differences between Windows and Mac OS. In Mac OS, closing a window is different from closing a program. The little red X simply closes a the window, it does not quit the program. To quit a program, simply type apple Q, go with your mouse to the top bar, select the program name (for example, Sarfari), and then select "Quit (program name)" which is at the bottom. You can also simply left click the program icon in the dock and choose "Quit program."
I see this difference between windows and Mac OS as an advantage; if you close the last window of an application, you can just open a new window without worrying about re-starting the program. This is especially useful with large programs that take time to start.

  • Attempting to exit a tab in any fashion, the page puts up a dialog box and won't exit.

When attempting to exit a tabbed page by any means, the page puts up a dialog box that occupies a vertical strip of the entire computer screen. It has a question mark and says "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?
PRESS ESCAPE OR CLOSE THIS ALERT"
When you press escape or close the alert, the dialog box goes away, but you don't exit the page.
I suspect a malefactor has somehow captured the page and modified its behavior, so I doubt the reported URL will help.
I need to find some foolproof way to close the tab.
    Thank you,
    John

try clicking EDIT, on the upper ribbon of your firefox browser, then on the bottom click PREFERENCES, then on the top select the PRIVACY tab. On the right hand side under history there's a couple of buttons that say EXCEPTIONS and show cookies, select EXCEPTIONS and click on the website that is preventing you from closing the tab. Then on the bottom click REMOVE SITE. you can also remove cookies this way. Restart your computer and it should be normal. This worked for me, I hope it works for you!
oh yeah by the way when you click the PRIVACY tab, make sure the "Firefox will: use custom settings for history" option is selected.

  • Adobe Reader XI won't launch, can't download or open existing PDF files.

Running Windows 7 and have had no trouble with PDF files until few weeks ago.  Now Adobe Reader Xi won't execute and I can't download or open existing PDF files using Adobe.  Interesting that I can open existing PDF files unsit PaintShop Pro X4 but not in Adobe.  Have unistalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader XI several times with no change in problem.

  • Adobe reader x eats up my memory

I run my adobe reader x (10.1.1) on windows 7. In most cases, when i open the first pdf file, everything works fine. Problem occurs when i try to open the second one. The reader stop working and the memory usage goes up to like 1.6 Gb and keeps increasing. I have to end the prcess before it eats up all my memory. But for some other files, like the pdf file from http://unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0370.pdf, i cannot open at all. Is it a universal problem or just a special case happen to me?
    Thank you for the reply.

it happens to both. I can see multiple instances of Adobe Reader, only one of them is acquiring large amount of memory
As for the pdf i linked, when i tried to opening it, everything stucked. Two processes of adobe reader were shown in task manager, and one of them used up almost all memeory. So i had to terminated it. For other pdf files which caused problems (when they are opend as a second pdf file), i can always reopen it as a first pdf file without problem. This one is different; i can never open it, no matter open it directly or download it and open it locally. i don't know why.
One thing stranged is that this issue never happened before until two days ago, i used to open 10+ pdf file for paper reviewing.
    Thanks for your reply.

To apply permissions to a file or folder for a user:
    a. Right-click on the C drive and then click Properties.

  • Reader 8.1.2 display/memory limits?

I work on graphics-heavy books, which I convert into PDF to send to my printer. A typical 192-page project with all pages as 1200-dpi bitmap art is around 300mb once converted to PDF.
Since upgrading my Reader from 7x to 8.1.2, I've encountered a peculiar problem when reviewing my files (besides hanging and generally running horrendously slow)... after displaying a number of pages (roughly 176), the Reader will not completely finish loading the file, giving the error "Couldn't find XObject named 'Im0.'" The file itself is not corrupt, as I can open and view it within older versions of Reader with no issues, and Acrobat Pro 6 (and I've tried this on several computers with the same results.) Also, if I open the file in Reader 8 and simply jump to the end of the file, I can view them... so the problem definitely seems to be related to the amount of data it views/loads.
It seems to me that Reader 8.1.2 has memory issues, but then again I'm not software-literate. Is this a known problem? More importantly, is this an issue that affects the entire Acrobat 8x family?
