Reading a Borland structed File

I am trying to throw together a quick program with LabView which needs to
read files that have been written by a Borland compiled program.
It seems Borland does not handle structs the same as LabView, Borland seems
to condense the memory allocated to a structure. If something only needs
16bits only 16bits are allocated. At least this is what the programmers
around here are telling me.
I found a way around this by reading each element of the structure one by
one, but I was told there should be a easier way around this. It seems Visual
C++ has the same problem as LabView when reading Borland structures. Visual
C++ has a command that changes the structures to match Borland.
Does LabView have this capability?

There are several issues here -- promotion, alignment, and endianness.
Most compilers will allocate the space specified with a typical
limit of a one byte minimum. Some choose to promote small allocation
to a larger size. This happens on PCs when passing parameters to a
function, and some exotic computers do this to structs as well. This
is generally done for speed of access. LV always allocates the size
requested, one byte, two, four, eight for doubles, or ten for extendeds
(Note that extendeds are a different size on each platform's memory
representation and sixteen bytes on disk).
Alignment refers the initial address where an allocation will be located
and the additional space added between allocations. Typical alignment
rules are that bytes can be stored at any address, but two-byte words
are stored on even addresses, four-byte longs are stored on mod-four
addresses, and perhaps there is an eight byte rule. The alignment rules
are very much dependent on the chip architecture, and again its a
performance issue. CPUs can be simplified if they can make assumptions
about which addresses the instructions need to load from, and they
often use exception/interrupt based means for loading non-aligned memory.
The Intel architecture has no required alignment rules and can access
any size allocation from any address. Compilers settings can change
the alignment to be more strict than necessary, and that is becoming
more common on the PC. LV still locates allocations on a one-byte
boundary, meaning that there is never any additional space inserted
between cluster/structure elements.
Endianness refers to the order of bytes in a multi-byte allocation. Intel
is referred to as a little-endian architecture and SPARC, PA-RISC, PPC,
68K, and most others are typically used big-endian. Some architectures can
actually switch depending on what the OS requires. The in-memory image of
any allocation in LV is the native format, but when saved to disk, the data
is always standardized -- meaning it is always saved in big-endian format.
This was chosen as the standard partly because of where LV came from, and
partly because this is considered the network standard. Saving data in
the standard form makes it easier to transport LV VIs and data between
platforms and read the data into a different type of computer, but it
does mean that other PC programs have a little difficulty reading and
writing to LV's data format.
My guess here is that there is no problem with promotion or alignment,
but the problem is with the endianness. I think it is the advanced
palette that has some memory access primitives that can be used to
swap bytes or words of an allocation to make them be match the assumptions
of the other PC application. Note that there are only two types of
endianness, big and little. Data files written by other applications
either match LV or they don't. The same swap works on reads as well
as writes.

  • Windows Easy Transfer (WET) Issues with External Hard Drive - "Can't read from the source file or disk"

I work for Office Depot, in the tech department. Basically, one of our associates was supposed to do a data backup, and re-install Windows 7, then transfer the files back. He used Windows Easy Transfer and compacted everything into a 163 GB file.
Now comes the hard part. When we try to put it back on his computer ((drag-and-drop to the desktop) which has been wiped back to factory settings using the recovery partition), it stops at 79.5 GB remaining (you know how it doesn't give you a % of completion,
it just shows how many GB are remaining) and then says "Can't read from the source file or disk" and gives you an option to try again, or cancel. It gets hung up on the same point each time.
Normally, this wouldn't be a huge issue, but the contents on the drive are his wife's architect blueprints and interior design stuff, along with wedding photos, etc, which are the only copies they have. On top of those, they have court documents and other
important files that we are unable to access now.
I wasn't involved with this transfer, so I'm trying to clean up the mess as best I can. I remembered that the customer's wife was Russian, and had some files typed with a Russian keyboard, so on and so forth. I wonder if that's the issue? If not, I really
have no idea how to manually extract things from a ".mig" file, or how to diagnose what area is potentially corrupted.
In light of this situation, we tried using "Recuva" to recover the files post-wipe, but everything was corrupted or unable to be opened, and it also extracted and recovered all of the "useless" photos, such as the skype logos, up and
down arrows for browsers, etc (it was 160,000+ photos).
Trying to avoid a potential lawsuit, unhappy customer, and costing the company lots of money to see if professionals can get into this external hard drive.
    Other relevant information:
We used a Toshiba 500 GB (465 GB) external hard drive.
Customer's computer is an HP Pavilion P6000 Series (Model No. p6520y) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1.
Any other information that is needed can be provided, thanks in advance, and hopefully we can find a solution to this issue quickly!
    -John

I think there's a lack of understanding somewhere.
"If you even can't start the process, please unplug it from your new PC. Then head back to your new computer and plug
the external drive back in to your new computer. "
Unplug from new, head back to new, plug it back in? That doesn't make much sense! Haha.
I knew what you meant though, somewhat. When I search through the drives after clicking yes (Has windows easy transfer
already saved your files blah blah blah) I click on the transfer file and it says "Windows Easy Transfer could not open the file".
Rather than drag-and-drop the file to the desktop, I now tried to double-click on the file itself while it was plugged
into the computer. It opened, and it started transferring until it was about 70% completed, and then an error popped up saying "WET can't open the easy transfer file, make sure your USB device is plugged in or check your internet connection".
I checked, and the USB hard drive's light wasn't on. Now, I unplug it and plug it back in, and the light comes back on,
so I click Retry, and it resets the bar back to nothing and says "Transfer time: 1 minute".
Rather than continue trying, I clicked "Cancel" instead of Retry, and it says "Your transfer did not complete successfully."
It says to click "view report" for more information, but there's no "view report button".
At the moment, I am scanning the External Drive for bad sectors using the check disk tool in properties. It's frozen
    at "0 USN bytes processed".

  • Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar, etc. Malware?

    Specs:
    iMac 10.8.5
    3,4 GHz Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, security software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar and are randomly corrupted, when I entered something in the Youtube searchbar (when it was still working) it send me to a site with sexadds.
I tried restart my iMac and when I was logged back in, my dock preferences were reset.
Also tried to download some security software to check my Mac for malware, but when I did, I tried several, I got a notification that said something like 'dumpfiles (don't know if this is the right translation...) damaged'.
I'm taking screenshots from all the weird notifications I get and even three quarters off the screenshots I took in the last three hours are already unreadable.
It started this morning when I tried opening a Premiere Pro file on which I worked the night before.
When I tried opening it, it said the file was damaged and could not be openend.
I tried opening it with AE or importing the file in a new project but nothing helped.
When I tried looking for autosaves, this is the really weird part, there were none.
Even though there are autosaves from my other projects, this one was completely gone.
It looked like the day before never happened on my computer.
Also when I openend Premiere all the recent projects had been wiped.
So at first I thought it was a Premiere Pro failure.
But than, later on the day, I tried loading some RAW files from my compact flash card.
This is where I would get an error (error -36) which said some data cannot be read or written.
I tried importing the files with a view different technics, from dragging to importing via Lightroom and I succeeded with Image Browser.
But when I tried moving the files to an other folder the same error occurred.
While dealing with this issue I wanted to put on some soothing music on youtube.
This is when the next weird thing occurred: youtube wasn't completely loading in Chrome. I refreshed a view times, checked the internet connection and still no difference.
When I tried in Safari it did work but when I clicked enter on the searchbar in Youtube, a page with sexadds appeared (I didn't install AdBlock in Safari...).
I read about this 'phishing' where you are redirected to a site were a possible malware installment can take place...
I don't know if it's connected to any of the problems I've been having but I just never experienced this on a mac, I have been a Mac user for 10 years now.
On top of it all, internet started working worse and worse and now it's not even working at all. I had to fill in the password over and over, normally it remembers.
Just like my system preferences, all the preferences I had with Chrome where also reset.
Also somewhere in between I got this notification: Mac OS X must restore library to run programs. Type your password to allow.
To me this is all very weird and suspicious. I have clearly no idea what's going on. Could this be another sort of trojan horse or malware?
Some background info which could be helpful for solving this mystery:
two months ago the one year old Fusion Drive in my iMac just broke out of nowhere.
I got it replaced by a qualified apple repair store.
When I got my computer back, all the files where gone.
I got on the internet without AdBlock installed yet.
A game or whatever it was, can't clearly remember, got installed by accident.
    I deleted it immediately.
Only two weeks later, I couldn't log in to my account. It didn't recognize my password and username.
So I brought my mac back to the store.
Here the repair guy said it was a minor thing and he just needed to reconnect my account. He also mentioned he found a downloaded game name Sparta and it probably had something to do with the error.
I asked him; could it be a virus? He replied no way.
I don't know why I couldn't be a virus, just because it's a mac doesn't mean it cannot be done.
So today I tried installing anti virus software (such as avast- was in a weird language looked like slovenian, clamxav - was in slovenian) but I couldn't install them.
PLEASE help me! I don't know what to do anymore, I work fulltime and I need my computer, I have no time to bring it in for repair, are there other perhaps easier ways?
Could this be the work of a virus or a malware? Or is it a disk permissions issue?

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Problem with ArrayLists and writing and reading from a .dat file (I think)

I'm brand new to this forum, but I'm sure hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with ArrayLists. This program was originally created with an array of objects that were displayed on a GUI with jtextFields, then cycling thru them via jButtons: First, Next, Previous, Last. Now I need to add the ability to modify, delete and add records. Both iterations of this program needed to write to and read from a .dat file.
It worked just like it was suppose to when I used just the array, but now I need to use a "dynamic array" that will grow or shrink as needed: i.e. an ArrayList.
When I aded the ArrayList I had the ArrayList use toArray() to fill my original array so I could continue to use all the methods I'd created for using with my array. Now I'm getting a nullPointerException every time I try to run my program, which means somewhere I'm NOT filling my array ???? But, I'm writing just fine to my .dat file, which is confusing me to no end!
It's a long program, and I apologize for the length, but here it is. There are also 2 class files, a parent and 1 child below Inventory6. This was written in NetBeans IDE 5.5.1.
Thank you in advance for any help anyone can give me!

BalusC -- The line that gives me my NullPointerException is when I call the "DisplayProduct()" method. Its a dumb question, but with NetBeans how do I find out which reference could be null? I'm not very familiar with how NetBeans works with finding out how to debug. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. The IDE is com-plete-ly irrelevant. It's all about the source code.
Do you understand anyway when and why a NullPointerException is been thrown? It is a subclass of RuntimeException and those kind of exceptions are very trival and generally indicate an design/logic/thinking fault in your code.

someObject.doSomething(); // Invoking a reference which is null would throw NPE.

  • How to read a whole text file into a pl/sql variable?

Hi, I need to read an entire text file--which actually contains an email message extracted from a content management system-- into a variable in a pl/sql package, so I can insert some information from the database and then send the email. I want to read the whole text file in one shot, not just one line at a time. Shoud I use Utl_File.Get_Raw or is there another more appropriate way to do this?

  • Crystal Report that reads from an XML file Datetime or Date

I have a Crystal Report 2008 that reads from an XML file, the source File XML Date data looks like this: 2008-03-10
But the Crystal Report interpreted by datatime, I need the Crystal Report to look like this: 2008/03/10 (date) not 2008-03-10T00:00:00-05:00 (datatime)
Look at an example (source file xml, report, and parameter file to execute report) at url: http://www.5websoft.com/sample.zip
Import the file in the design and will to verify that interpret incorrectly the fields of type date as datetime
    not mapped currently for fields..
    Help.....
    Thanks!

You could always reformat the field to only display the date portion:
Format Field > Date and Time tab; choose the date style you need here.
Or create a formula to extract just the date and use this field in your report:
    date({table.field})

  • HOW TO WRITE AND READ FROM A TEXT FILE???

How can I read from a text file and then display the contents in a JTextArea??????
Also how can I write the contents of a JTextArea to a text file.
Extra Question::::::: Is it possible to write records to a text file. If you have not idea what I am talking about then ignore it.
    Manny thanks,
your help is much appreciated though you don't know it!

    Do 3 things.
-- Look through the API at the java.io package.
-- Search previous posts for "read write from text file"
-- Search java.sun.com for information on the java.io package.
That should clear just about everything up. If you have more specific problems, feel free to come back and post them.

  • How can i read data in pagemaker file (PMD) using Visual Studio C# NET ?

I have bunch of data in .PMD file (Page Maker Document). Which contains mathematical equations and chemistry formulas, I am a .NET developer, and I am writing code for one of the educational learning system. For that I need to read and store mathematical equations/ chemistry formulas from .PMD file into database then display on the browser page.
Is it possible to read data from .PMD file using C#.NET, do I need to use any external libraries. How can I import .PMD to MATHML (Mathematical Markup language)?
    Any existing examples for C#.NET?
    Please help me regarding this.

I can't claim to know much about visual C# Net, but I do know a bit about pagemaker. It really can't handle equations. there are a few work arounds involving things like baseline shifts and multiple text boxes, but generally equations were created in different programs and placed in pagemaker in picture or eps files. Either way the chances of extracting usable data out of pagemaker is very slim.

  • How can i read my 1080 50p files from my panasonic camera

Hi all newbie here can someone give me the name of software that can read my panosonic HDC-HS700 1080-50p files from my camera i can read the HA 1920 files okay but just cant read the 1080 file, people tell me that the imac doesnt support the 1080-50p files but surely there must be some software that can read from my camera.
                 Regards to all Pete.

    Hi  EZ  Jim,
After reading and following the info you sent through, i realised that the question i asked was totally wrong.
my question is that my mac cant read or even see the 1080/50p on the hard drive of my cam, because apparently the Panasonic HDC-HS700 is not compatible with Apple can you beleive that, so now i have got to go out and by the software from Panasonic install on a crappy windows machine and then onto a portable hard drive and then back into my Mac.what a load of c--p.
So thanks EZ for your help it was in any event usefull info that you gave me,
    My very Best regards Pete.

  • Is there a way to set read-only on a file manually?

Is there a secret keypress combo that will allow me to set
the read-only attribute on files in the file inspector window? I
can not use the check-in/out function because, IMHO, it is broken.
Macromedia has given a menu ability to "reset" (turn off) the
read-only attribute but they left out the "turn on" function. Would
    certainly help me a lot...anyone?
    Thanks!
p.s. in order to defray wasted back-n-forth postings, here is
    why it is broken:
    1. I run DW8 locally while connected to the network with
mapped fileserver drives (M:, P:, etc)
    2. I have the default website set up pointing to our
    DEVELOPMENT file server
    3. when I do a PUT the files are FTP'd to a different web
    server for public consumption
    4. the error is that if check-in/out is enabled, the files
are pulled from the PUBLIC web server instead of just opening them
from the DEVELOPMENT server like I clicked on...if I wanted to edit
the live files I would have changed my site pointer to remote
    instead of local (good grief)
    5. this is bad because everyone else in the company uses that
cr@ppy Frontpage and are constantly editing their division's
webpages, which are in various stages of readiness. When I edit one
of those pages I need to be editing the one they have been working
on, NOT the one that is currently published to the public website!
DW8 is doing more work than I want it to do by going out and
grabbing the published page instead of simply opening the one I
clicked on in the file manager window. That makes NO sense at all,
and as a developer I certainly wouldn't have programmed it that
    way...

editing. Once everyone is working as a team with good supervision

The problem is that I am the only person using

You and Murray have both alluded to a separate "testing"
server. Perhaps I can make this system work by setting up the
testing server as a duplicate of the development server in my site
manager. Then I would have to manually publish the files from the
testing server to the live production server myself. What a pain!!!
I can not believe that I am the only person in the world that has a

  • Write/read image to avi file, VI works incorrectly from the second run

Hi everybody, in my labview I write image from IMAQ USB to avi file and read image from avi file, the VI runs correctly at the first run then after that it goes wrong, I can write/read only one frame and it terminates automatically. Does anybody know why and how to solve this?
    Thanks a lot,
    Hannah

Without seeing your code I can't comment specifically, but if it runs correctly the first time and then stops be looking for something that is not getting reinitialized correctly. Also what exactly do you have to do to get it to work again? Close and reopen the VI? Restart LV? Restart the computer?
