Reading frequency from a 4070 DMM

I wish to measure the frequency of a swept sinewave. Using a ni4070 and a Ivi step in TestStand takes about 2 seconds which means that it is too slow to read the frequency of the ramping sinewave at a specific point during the ramp.
How can this frequency measurement be speeded up?

How do I read data from a DMM or DC Power Supply at a specified rate?

I have a PXI system with 4071 DMMs and 4110 DC Power Supplies. I want to be able to measure the power consumption of my DUT as it performs various operations. This is what my process flow looks like:
1. Configure DMM and Power Supply
2. Wait for DUT to go into a certain mode
3. Start Acquiring data from DMM and PS.
4. Wait for DUT to get out of this mode
5. Stop Acquiring data from DMM and PS.
Since the duration of step #4 is uncertain, I cannot tell the units to collect a predetermined number of samples and give it back to me. Instead I have to take readings as long as it's required.
I'm attaching screenshots of my setup and read process. The reading is done inside a timed loop which is running at 1kHz.
The problem is that using niDMM Read Multi-Point or niDCPower Measure Multiple takes 5-9ms before I get a reading, so I'm not really getting 1ms resolution in my data. I'm sure there are other folks who have had the need to read data from these devices with better time-resolution, so if anyone can point me in the correct direction, it would be great. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing the correct thing here.

What is really confusing to me is why you are even using the multi-point function when you set the sample count to 1. If you want multiple points, request multiple samples and let the DMM acquire them at a rate you specify. If you want a single sample, use the normal Read. You also need to pay attention to how fast the DMM can acquire. If you want the fastest sample rates, you might be a lot better off with a DAQ board.

50 Hz interference PCI 4070 DMM

I am using a PCI 4070 DMM to measure a waveform voltage in a range of 200 mV at 1 kS/s. The point is that I see 50Hz interference which is higher than the useful signal I need to acquire.
As I learnt from the DMMs Help file:
Note When using a resolution of 6.5 digits on the NI 4065 and NI 4070/4071/4072, 50 Hz and 60 Hz noise will be rejected automatically. This is due to the selection of default aperture times on the devices, which appropriately filter out noise.
Since I set sample rate at 1 kS/s, 50 Hz noise is not rejected automatically; I tried configuring powerline frequency at 50 Hz but the problem remains, so I would like to know how I can filter out noise. Maybe adjusting aperture time or other parameters in a properly way?
If it’s not possible through DMMs measurement configuration, should I turn to signal processing tools?

Hi Marc,
What type of signal are you measuring, how high is the frequency content of interest? Are you getting an effective sample rate of 1kS/s or are you configuring an aperture of 1ms?
Here is a link that better describes the DMM measurement cycle (http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/370384N-01/dmm/measurement_cycle/). I wanted to be sure you were aware of all of the parameters that affect the effective reading rate of the DMM.
Your DMM bandwidth, assuming a 1ms aperture time, is wide enough to measure the 50Hz interference. If you increased the aperture time for the DMM you would reduce that bandwidth and begin reducing the amplitude of the interference. (http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/370384N-01/dmm/dc_noise_rejection/). The best rejection is achieved when your aperture time is configured to be at 1 PLC, however this will result in less bandwidth for you measurement.
If your signal of interest requires you to have an aperture time of 1ms, you could post process the data with some filtering.

When I testing with my vi, the calibrator (source) error "Current Compliance Voltage Exceeded".

The error looks like it is related to a power supply or an SMU that is trying to source something out of its specified range.

Dynamically Reading Files From Application Server

Hi Experts,
Presently I have to write a program which reads files from the application server dynamically. This program will be scheduled in the background with the frequency of half an hour.

How to calculate rms voltage, rms current and frequency from real time data?

Hello,
I need to calculate the real time rms voltage, rms current and frequency of the received voltage and current graphs using visa read. Actually am trying to monitor the voltage and current parameters of AC load, in this case, am using a set of 4 light bulbs at the moment. Expected frequency is 50 Hz, and rms voltage close to 240v AC, current about 1A.
Attached is the vi picture of what I have been able to achieve so far, courtesy of labview forums. But I need to finally finish this vi by calculating the Vrms, Irms and frequecy. The front panel shows the voltage (Chart V) and current (Chart I) after scaling. Chart VI represents ADC value 0 ~ 1023 of received data. Aray V & I show the binary bits received up to 10 bits of useful data from ADC. Each sine wave from ADC is sampled at 25 samples for the ADC conversion, and sampling frequency of 1.28kH.
I have tried using the RMS vi, but seems I don't know how to configure it correctly to get desired results. Also when I make changes like switching of one of the bulbs so that their is current change, I need to refresh the SERIAL port first before changes show up on the VI. Any ideas on how to improve on this are highly appreciated.
Otherwise, I would appreciate if somebody helps me MODIFY my VI to read the rms values and frequency from received data. This is the last piece of my project, I do appreciate all the help rendered. Am currently using labview labview 2014, student version!

note that peak voltage (Vpeak) is (240 * 1.414) = 399 V and peak current about 1.414 if intended rms current is 1A.

It took me quite a while to find a solution that will enable me to read dbf files from 64 bit SQL server, so i decided to create this guide for all of you guys searching for an answer.

Visakh, i believe you are mixing terms 'reading' and 'importing', as with solution i proposed you can consume 'live' data without the need to
import it on every change.
To clarify : Data in DBF's can change at any point in time, and with my solution whenever you try to read data from either linked server or directly, you will always have most recent data, contrary to the import methods where you are cloning data and actually
could run into many problems synchronizing original and cloned data.

Based on your data volatility you can configure an automated job for executing SSIS package to extract latest of data from dbase. But again it wont be "in real time". There will be slight delay depending on frequency you choose for job.
I was suggesting it more from a datawarehousing perspective whether data refresh happens only after predefined period (daily,6hrs etc)
If requirement is to get realtime data when you desire then definitely linked server would be the way to go.

When using DAQ assistant to read frequency

When using DAQ assistant to read frequency and Task timing is set to:
N Samples, Clock settings to read 26,
Frequency setup to rising edge,
1 counter with 10 kHz to 1 kHz range.
I get back a single number.
Can I assume this is an average reading of 25 samples with the first sample unused?
What is the base clock used?
Is the “26” 26 cycles of the frequency to be measured?

If you choose to acquire N samples from the DAQ Assistant then it will acquire all of these samples and return them to LabVIEW as an array. However, when you use the DAQ Assistant it outputs the data in the dynamic data type first. This data type makes it easy to graph and run the data through other express VIs. If you were to create a Numeric Indicator from this data type it would just display the last element from the dynamic data array. To display this data properly in a numeric format convert the dynamic data to an array of doubles by using the Convert From Dynamic Data function in LabVIEW. Then you can select to convert it to a 1D array of scalars and when you create an indicator off of the output of this function all of the data should be displayed.
The timebase that is used for lower frequency measurements is the onboard clock, which is internally connected to the Source. Then you connect your signal to be measured to the Gate of the counter. Since the frequency of the onboard clock is known it can be used to calculate the frequency of an unknown source based on when the counter is on and off (determined by the Gate).

PXI-4070 DMM in PXIe-1075 Chassis not found

I have a PXIe-1075 chassis and four PXI-4070 DMMs. I orginally had the four DMMs in slots 2,3, 4 & 5 but descided to move the modules around including two of the DMMs so they are in slots 16 and 17. When I did this the DMMs are not found in Measurement and Automation Explorer. If I remove the module in slot 3 (PXIe-2531) they will reappear. The main reason for moving the modules was to maximize through put because slots 2 through 4 share a PCIe switch (as do slots 15 through 18).
Slots 2 through 5 and 15 through 18 should be hybrid compatiable. Are there rules for mixing hybrid and PXIe modules?

I don't know about the original problem, but you can get the reconfiguration effect in device manager. Open device manager, select view->by connection, and then start expanding things until you find your device. On my Windows 7 PC the hierarchy starts with something like [computerName]->[ACPI x64-based PC]->[Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System]->[PCI bus]->[something Root Port]->[PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge]...
Go to the PCI-to-PCI bridge listed under the root port and above the devices in your chassis, right-click and select "uninstall". Open Measurement and Automation Explorer and delete the devices (they should be non-present). Then either reboot or go to device manager's munu item action->scan for hardware changes. That should cause Windows to re-find all your devices.

Can I measure the frequency from all PFI pins?

I am using a PCI-6229 DAQmx card. I am trying to measure the frequency from pin PFI 5. I have been successful in measuring frequency from PFI0 and PFI1 but for some reason I am not able to measure on other pins. When I run the run the DAQmx Read sub VI it times out like it is not reading anything. I am using the same sub VI I created to measure 5 as I did 0 and 1 so I know that the VI is working. What is the matter? Are there only certian pins that I can measure? Would the sub VI time out because there is no signal on the pin?

The basic answer to your question, "Would the sub VI time out because there is no signal on the pin?", Is yes if there is no signal coming into the pin your are bring a signal in on. It sounds like you were able to do a "frequency" measurement on PFI0 and PFI1? Usually the counter tasks are used for such a measurement. How are you performing these frequency counter tasks on your PFI lines? It looks like on the pin read out that PFI0,1 and 5 are for digital tasks and PFI routing lines. Are you internally routing your signals to other places? If you want to measure the frequency using counters, this board has two of them so use Ctr 0 and 1 gate or source to make these measurements. Let me know if any of this helps you and perhaps you could post a piece of your code that you are using to make your frequency counts.

Labview for arduino reading frequency

I'm trying to figure out a way to read a frequency from a device. The device tells how far away something is by a beeping signal. I tapped into this beeping signal and it is now connected to an arduino pin generating a high/low signal to Labview. I got this much to work but now I need the distance that the device is collecting. Basically I need to know if it's possible to generate a number on a numeric idicator from the information on how fast the frequency changes. I'm not really sure if this is enough information but I'm attaching my basic high/low code. I used a basic meter to display whether it is high or low.

In the example I posted before, you don't want to use any of the DAQmx VIs. You would replace these with the arduino code but use the same frequency calculation.
What errors are you getting when using the pulses or frequency functions and which ones have you tried?
You could do a manual calculation of the RPM. Assuming you get one pulse per rotation, count the pulses of the optical sensor for 1 second. This will give you rotations/second. Then you can multiply this number by 60 to get rotations per minute. The problem with this is if 1 second passes when the motor is half way through a rotation, then there is no way to account for this in the calculation. If there is more than one pulse per rotation then you will need to factor this into the calculation.

How to read values from DMM4040

What language are you using? If using LabVIEW, you use the NI-DMM API to communicate with the 4040. Just take your reading, do your limit comparison, and set your lines based on the comparison results.

View Object to read data from a java file

Hi,
I am using JDeveloper 11.1.1.4 and ADF-BC in my application.
For one of my view objects , I want the data to be read from a java file which exposes some method to return a collection.
I cannot use a static view object in this case.
Please suggest the best way to implement this requirement.Basically build a view object that should read data from a java file.

Depending on your use case you can either use a programmatic VO or directly expose the JV class as a data control.
