I do not know if I am using the right strategy. I have abandon the idea of using the server's form based authentication feature. What I have done is that I am using a Filter to intercept all incoming requests to serve a Login page using the RequestDispatcher and make a comparison to the users credentials in the DB.
In the midst of doing that, i encountered problem using sendRedirect. sendRedirect causes the application to run in an unterminated loop. I wonder why. It was solved by using RequestDispatcher. Just curious and wanted to know about sendRedirect.

  • EJB access from LoginModule / Realm impl.

    I have a custom LogingModule and Realm implementation for SJSAS (J2EE SDK 1.4). My user/group information is stored in a MySQL instance. I am currently using straight JDBC to perform authentication; I would like to use EJB instead (ie: implement a Session bean with a business method 'authenticate').
    However, it would appear that I "can't get there from here". When I try to lookup objects via JNDI, I get NamingException's encapsulating InvocationExceptions. It would appear that I can't lookup "java:comp/env/" names from within LoginModule / ISARealm implementations.
    This sort of makes sense to me ... my LoginModule implementation is essentially a J2EE client, invoked by the J2EE application server itself. Normally I would have to run J2EE client code with appclient (when using SJSAS) right?
    Is there a way to use J2EE services from within services added to the App server? I could probaby expose this stuff as a web service, but that just seems like a silly work around. At the very least I would like to be able to define a JDBC connection pool so that I don't have to manage JDBC connections myself. At the moment I am creating a new connection every time I authenticate a user (wince).

    Thanks; it turns out that this is a red-herring. There is no problem. Accessing a session bean from a LoginModule implementation works just fine.
    I was trying to lookup names like "java:comp/env/....". This resulted in an InvocationException, which I thought was telling me that there was something horribly wrong. It turns out that everything works as expected if I lookup names relative to "java:comp/env" -- ie: if I lookup ejb/<session bean name>.
    I think I should be getting a "name not found" NamingException rather than an InvocationException encapsulated in a NamingException. Should I submit a (minor) bug for that?

  • Basic authentication with sendRedirect doesn't work

    Hello from the school of hard knocks:
    Following is my web.xml file. It doesn't ask for a username/password but instead gives a "Page not found 404" error. Behind the scenes the unauthorized page is being accessed via sendRedirect(). If I take out the unauthorized page URL in the web.xml and use in-page authentication (see code below), then the browser prompts 3 times and gives the access anyway!!! This is absolutely ridiculous for Tomcat 4.1.29. Can anyone help me out?

  • Upgrading the J2EE to J2EE 5

    Hey,
    I've got the Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8.1 installed and would like to upgrade the J2EE from 1.4 to J2EE 5.
    I've downloaded the J2EE sdk 5 and installed it and used the upgrade option within the installer, however I am not able to change the J2EE option within the IDE, only options are 1.3 and 1.4.
    So my question is how can I change it to use the newer version?

    - Generally speaking, an externally installed server can be used in JSE using the following method:
       1. Add the server to the list of available servers.
       Go to the 'Runtime' tab on the navigator window, Right-click on 'Servers' ,
       select 'Add Server' and follow the wizard.
       2. Once the server is added to the list, right-click on any project,
       select properties, go to the 'Run' category panel in the project properties dialog
       and  set the 'Server' combo-box value to the desired server.- But the above can be done only for supported versions of the servers. According to the release notes at http://developers.sun.com/jsenterprise/reference/docs/jse8_1/sjse_relnotes81.html#bundled
    only the following app/web servers are supported:
       App Servers
          Sun Java System Application Server 8.2 PE
          BEA Weblogic Server 9.0

       Web Servers
          Sun Java System Web Server 7.0
          Apache Tomcat 5.5.9Of these tomcat and SJSAS PE are bundled and installed along with the IDE. Rest of the servers need to be downloaded, installed and added to ide's server list.
    J2EE SDK 5 servers are not supported by JSE 8.1 and therefore cannot be used with JSE 8.1.
    - For working with J2EE 5 SDK, NetBeans 5.5 is a very good choice. (JSE8.1 is based on NetBeans 5.0 and the later versions of NetBeans provide support to latest technologies).
    I would suggest that you checkout NetBeans 5.5:

    On the above page, there is also a 'Java EE 5 Tools bundle' that includes the server and the enterprise pack.
    Of course you can also install NetBeans 5.5 and add the sdk5 server you had installed to the ide's server list.

    I am trying to develop a sample application and try to run with sun one application server. I followed the tutorial. My application client is working fine. But my web client is producing the following error. I think we don't need to install Tomcat seperately when we have the application server or do I have to... any suggestions...

    You do not need to install Tomcat. SJSAS contains a web container. The error you are seeing could be caused by a few reasons. There are many previous threads on this issue, perhaps you could search the forum. I used the following search term, "Unable to compile class for JSP" ,and got many hits.

  • HTTPS and HTTP

    I have downloaded javaee1.5 and installed on Linux as well as windows. Migrated all applications from Tomcat to SJSAS 9.0 Successfully and all the applications ran fine for 1 month. After that HTTPS started closing automatically everyday. I did netstat -an on port 8181 the there are lots of connection in CLOSE_WAIT and one is in LISTEN. Logs suggested "java.io.IOException: too many open files". All my applications are database applications and sessions and other pages are closed properly. i Checked thoroughly all the code. where as all the applications are running in HTTP port for much long time. They also gets closed say after 3 days. Kindly suggest me what is goin wrong. Migrated to javaee 1.5 because tomcat was giving same problem. All the applications were running fine from last 2 yrs. in Mar 06 we standardised server and generated our own CA certificate.

    Try this at the command prompt:

    -Dhttp.proxyPort=<ProxyPortNameHere> <myclass>
    <ProxyHostNameHere> is to be replaced by the proxy host.
    <ProxyPortNameHere> is to be replaced by a proxy port number (i.e. 8080)
    <myclass> is the java class that you are running.
    You can also set these function through the System class. Check the API for setting properties.

  • Custom Realm for SJSAS 9.x using JAAS documentation too vague

    I am trying to implement a custom realm for a particular web application on my SJSAS 9.x server. So far I have been unsuccessful and receive the following message in my server.log:

    However, I have a number of questions.
    First of all, this section referenced by the URL above is identified as "Creating a custom realm". Then the second sentence of this section states "Note that client-side JAAS login modules are not suitable for use with the Application Server". Does this not mean that JAAS login modules are not suitable for use with SJSAS web applications since they are components of the Application Server? Is there a reason for providing information on creating a custom realm for this application server in which it is not suitable for? Why isn't it suitable for the application server? What if I want to implement my own realm for my web application so that I can maintain my application users separately in another application?
    Secondly, this section explains that I can create a custom realm simply by creating a custom JAAS login module and a custom realm class. It then goes on to explain how to construct these classes and what to include in them. Notably, the documentation states the following:
    The authenticateUser() method must end with the following sequence:

      _currentRealm, grpList);Having looked at the API for authenticateUser I discovered that it is a void method, however the documentation states to return a value from "commitUserAuthentication(..). Also, my commitUserAuthentication method only excepts a single argument of type String[] representing a list of group names, therefore I am unable to supply the additional arguments as documented. This is confusing.
    Once finished reading the documentation, I am left hanging with hardly a clue as to what to do with these two new classes. Now having implemented a custom login module on Tomcat 5.x in earlier days, I did happen to have some experience to know to edit the security.properties, policy, and login.conf files. So anyhow from here I end up stumbling blindly through configuration of my domain1/login.conf and domain1/server.policy files. I also attempted to add my new realm within the admin console under security/realms and dropped my new jar file (with two classes) into the app server lib directory.
    All in all, this completely fails to work. I have even placed System.out.println statements in all of my implemented methods and none of this actually shows up in my server.log file. Why is this section so vague? Why isn't there a step-by-step example from start to finish of how to implement a simple custom realm in SJSAS9?
    Does anybody have any helpful suggestions?

    Well, once again, I'm going to have to provide my own answer.
    After much waiting and then deciding to invest much time researching documentation and tracking down information to assist in my solution, I have manage to find the golden egg for my own recipe of a solution.

    I have mange to get my custom realm to work with the additional configuration of my sun-application.xml for my ear file. Even though I only wanted to specify my custom realm for my web.xml file, it turns out that in addition to this, I had to also define it in my sun-application.xml file (manually in XML text mode - within Netbeans 5.5) as follows:

  • I have a problem with JDBC Realm in Tomcat/Oracle/Win XP

    I have a problem with JDBC Realm in Tomcat.
    I have attached my server.xml file located in the
    C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 5.5\conf\server.xml
    The Problem is that when I login I get the user name and password prompt but it does not resolve.
    When I enter in the tomcat-users.xml password with memory realm uncommented it works fine.

  • URGENT HELP NEEDED ... Tomcat Realm and JRE1.4 plug-in problem

    I have tried the Security Realm of Tomcat. Since I do not have
    an LDAP server, I decided to use the Tomcat-users.xml file in
    Tomcat\conf directory.
    I added the following lines of code in the web.xml file.

    So, now when we type the url: http://localhost:8080/adbpdbre/default.htm, TOMCAT shows a dialog box asking for UserName: and Password:Now, only when we give the username and password, it shows the page. This is exactly what we want.
    But the problem now is, this default.htm page, has 5 links to 5 applets. The first time that I click on one of these links, the JRE plug of 1.4 shows a dialog again asking for the username and password. Till I dont provide the username and password the system doesnt go ahead and applet doesnt load. I do not want the JRE to ask me for the username/passwords again..How to avoid this ?
    Can you give me some more information on this. Ultimately in the production usage, we will be using LDAP and not Tomcat's memory realm.

    In the config file, you 're essentially saying that you want Tomcat to prompt for usr/passw on every request (url-pattern = /*) made by a 'webviewer', and that's exactly what Tomcat is doing.
    Consider using specific url-patterns & roles for resources to be protected. If for now, all you need is to protect the first page, use a more specific url-pattern.
    Just an advice : if you'll be using LDAP in production, do not waste time with Tomcat's Security Realm and the BASIC authentication type, since the two have not much in common. Start reading doc on LDAP, and code a prototype, or even better, a vertical slice of the app (i.e a proof of concept).

    Yeah, it looks like we may have to alter the client code to basically pass their login via a "form"....but we'd rather not do that.
    BTW, this is a SOAP server we'll building...so not only would it been a real pain to alter the client's XML output (and therefore our corresponding remote method), but the login data would be even more in plain view.

  • Tomcat JDBC Realm Database Connection Error

    Hello all,
    I am trying to edit the server.xml file on Tomcat so I can use the JDBC Realm instead of the MemoryRealm. Hence, I will be able to read users, passwords and roles from a relational database instead of from the tomcat-users.xml.
    I have tried following all the guides on the net I can find, my server.xml looks as follows (after making changes to allow it to use JDBC realm). The only problem is, when I try to run the application the server outputs the following: (after all of these errors have been kicked up a pop-up box then appears titled "Tomcat Manager Application", it asks for a User Name and Password. I have tried the standard user name of "ide" and the password next to it in tomcat-users.xml but it won't accept it. (I am using the netbeans IDE)).
    Please could someone suggest any ideas of how I can get the server.xml to work with JDBC realm?

    So looking through the java api docs, I found that the tcUtilJDBCOperations has a connect string for the database. Below is the info it outlines. The questions I have it this. How do you specify the psdriver and URL along with do I need to do this as a persistent instance then add my selectstatement as a part of this or can I just specify this and the select statement will use this connection? Any help you can give would be appreciated.

  • JDBC Realm issue on Tomcat 4.0.1

    Hi folks,
    Tried this one the Sun forum and haven't had luck yet getting a thorough reply.
    Trying to establish the JDBC realm config in Tomcat and am getting the following error:

    does the above appear incorrect? If so, specifically how?

    connectionURL="jdbc:odbc:CATALINA"
    in this case, where is CATALINA supposedly pointing
    to a DB connection? I don't have mine set, save for
    maybe the classpath, but why would you point the
    connURL through jdbc:odbc to CATALINA?
    That is the name of a DNS. The ODBC shell (nothing to do with java) has DNS names. The shell uses the passed in name to look up the attributes associated with the name.
    If you were using a DNS-less name then you would have to specify ODBC driver (nothing to do with java) and the associated attributes for that driver in the connection string.
    I'm a little confused by this. Any explanation would
    be great, as I have a driver that is jdbc:odbc,
    rather than an exclusive Oracle driver.
    Well, I've got the ojdbc14_g.jar file. But that's not
    exclusively Oracle, correct? Just for JDBC with
    Oracle?
    A jdbc driver lives somewhere. The bridge driver lives in the Sun VM. The Oracle driver lives in a jar (current ones.)
    The bridge driver talks to ODBC (which is outside of java.)
    The oracle drivers talk to oracle databases.

  • Multiple Realms in Apache Tomcat

    Sorry, if this is the wrong forum, but its the closest match i could find.
    I am trying to run 2 servlets that use apache tomcat's j_security with a FORM login to authenticate clients. I would like these 2 servlets to be authenticated by having j_security look in two different tables in a MS SQL 2000 Server database.
    I have read up a lot on apache tomcat's site, and the sense that i've made of it is that i need to have multiple realms, and in order to do that i need multiple contexts. I've tried wrapping my realm tag in a context tag but it doesn't work. What am i missing?

  • Send JMS message from a webapp in Tomcat to JMS queue in SJSAS

    I have a web application. Is is a simple JMS message sender: 2 jsp files(User Interface) and a java helper class which in charge of the sending of jms messages) . It runs well on SJSAS 9 web container.
    After I have moved it to Tomcat5.5.17(bundled with Netbeans5.5.1), I have the following exception when I visit the jsp page:
