Rebooting every 4 hours

Mac Mini w/ Mavericks reboots every four hours like clockwork. We've reset SMC, unplugged backups, turned off Time Machine, checked for /etc/periodical maint. scripts.
Log files point to shutdown reason 5. We can't find what that means anywhere.
What would cause a machine to reboot like this?

I saw a similar unexplained reboot today on my MacBook Pro (10,1) running 10.9.3.
I found:
6/19/14 9:28:54.345 AM shutdown[755]: reboot by _atsserver:
It is possible that there is a shared API call in the atsserver and trustevaluationagent services which can initiate a failsafe reboot.  This indicates that the atsserver and the trustevaluationagent services are not necessarily responsible for the reboot behavior.
I recommend registering as an Apple Developer (its free) and posting a bug at bugreport.apple.com.  Include more console context, particularly earlier than you have above.
In my case, symptoms of system instability can be seen earlier in my console log:

  • WRT350N Rebooting every hour.

    Hey All,
I bought my WRT350N back in January from Best Buy.
I haven't had a single problem from it until recently. I very much love this router...but I upgraded the firmware..and my life is now hell. Every 30 to 60 minutes the router reboots. Also...where it used to send out 54mbps to my wife's laptop..I'm lucky to get 24 out of it. Anyone have any ideas?
    Tomcat

I'm having the same issue as the OP. I updated to the latest firmware Firmware Version: v1.03.7 on my WRT350N
And now the router reboots at random about once an hour to hour and a half.
up till now it's ran perfect for just over a year.

  • 8330 Curve reboots every hour or so

Recently had a problem with my phone spitting out error msgs (related to untrusted certificates while trying to go to a website). Long/short of it was the phone got wiped. I've put it back to normal as much as I can (new Service Books, restored the Address book from a backup, etc) but the foolish thing keeps rebooting (shuts down, red light while attached to nothing, then hourglass while it comes back up).
The phone is just over 2 years old w original battery, if that helps.
Thanks in advance for attempting to help.

ironic thing, the loaner nokia gave me to use while i wait for a red worked great except for the black screen during calls.
I just can't get a working red. Sad because i have a mobile sharing plan with 6 people on it, 5 have 920s and 3 of the five have been defective. One didn't work out the box and the other bricked after wireless charge. The third is mine that had battery drain issues and my replacment has battery drain and rebooting issues. So my family 4 phones that are defective. That is not a good %%

  • EA6500 reboots every few hours

Hi, I got my new comcast connection and using CISCO DPC3008 cable modem and EA6500 Wifi Smart Router. Internet works fine and then suddently the internet goes away. Further investigation shows EA6500 Wifi router just reboots every few hours and then wifi devices don't reconnect like it used to do with previous routers.
Any idea what is wrong? Have the latest firmware. Reset multiple times.

    Hi,
Is there a specific time when the router reboots? This performance seems weird and there's no way for most of us - the end users to check what causes the reboot. Anyways, you can try to set static channels on both 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz bands. For the 2.4Ghz - set it to channel 9 - 2.452 Ghz and for the 5Ghz band, set it to 153 - 5.765 Ghz.
This is based from  an observation on my friend's N450 Belkin Router - got so curious of it's "self healing" feature. Based on observation, self healing will just re-initialize the router based on the specific time that had been set and it will cycle through other available wireless channel. So, to avoid re-initialization, we can try setting a static wireless channel on EA6500.
If everyone needs to believe in something, I believe I'll have another beer..

  • Linksys WRT54GS Ver 5 needs reboot every 10-12 hours after wiring it to LG BD590 Blu-Ray

Had this router hard wired to a desktop - everything has been fine forever.  Moved it so I could hard wire it to the Blu-Ray player for watching Netflix, etc.  Everything works.  Except the Router needs to be rebooted every 10-12 hours.  Unplugging it for 30 seconds works.  The router seems to be working, but the wireless signal to the other computers in the house, although showing strong, will not connect to the internet, Router is getting its internet straight from the Comcast modem. I have the latest firmware installed in the router.  Any ideas greatly appreciated before I throw this thing out.

Try to re-flash the firmware on your router.
Connect the computer with the Ethernet cable to the router.
Download the latest firmware from Linksys website and save it on your computer. Open the setup page of the router. Click on Administration tab and go to Firmware upgrade sub tab. Browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded and upgrade it on your router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Also try to change some advanced wireless settings on the router. Click on Wireless tab and go to Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.

  • SPA112 Reboot every 72 hours (3 days) exactly.

    Hi,
I have a Cisco SPA112 which connects to a 3CX server. I also have addional phones, inluding Cisco SPA504G phones.
The issue I have is the SPA112 reboots every 3 days, exactly to the minute. This has happened 3 times now. The 504G is fine (40+ days uptime)
Nothing has changed on the provisioning of the ATA, when I do change things it reboots at 02:00 as expected, so I don't think this is related to reprovisioning.
I can provide more information e.g. logs if required, but thought I'd initially check if there is possibly a setting somewhere that I am unaware of that would cause this reboot every 72 hours exactly.
    Thanks in advance,
    Marcus

  • Why do I have to reboot my iPhone 6 every hour to have internet and mail service???

Every hour or two I have to power off my 6 then power on in order to have internet and mail service.  Is anyone else having this problem?

I'm having the same exact issue. I have the same phone/OS. Just switched from AT&T to Verizon so I wasn't sure whether it was my service or the phone. The same connectivity issues are happening to me with things like My Fitness Pal or Facebook notifications. Fitness app won't load or connect and for Facebook, I'll get a notice that I have one, I go to FB and it won't load the notifications or even load new stories on there for that matter. So AGAIN, I have to restart and POOF! I can use FB, Fitness App, etc AND I have 20 emails all of a sudden. So frustrating!

  • ICal keeps sending email notifications from all agenda items from the last 2 years. After laptop start up this action is repeated every hour. How can I stop these 300 emails coming in every hour?

iCal keeps sending email notifications of all agenda items from the last 2 years (then I bought my laptop). After laptop start up this action is repeated every hour. How can I stop these >300 emails coming in every hour?

    Hi,
We have rolled out a fix for this issue.
Please log off and log back in to your machine and the issue should be resolved automatically. In case that does not work, please manually run the msi installer posted here (may require reboot).
For details, please refer to the KB article here: Multiple RunOnce keys created 11.0.10 and 10.1.13 Acrobat | Reader
Please let us know if you still face any issues.
    Thanks,

  • Why is the purge command running every hour, and freezing my system?

I noticed over the past several days that my mac pro will freeze for several seconds (clock stops, mouse/keyboard don't work. completely frozen) every hour, to the minute.
I've tracked it down to the "purge" command, which is causing the problem.  But, I can't find where it's being called.  Any hints where I might look to find the cause?
I don't believe this was happening a few days ago. I have installed all software updates.
    I'm running 10.7.5 on a 2x2.66Ghz 6-core mac pro.
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copying and pasting as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

Hello this is happening to us also (minus the Bluetooth speaker).  We can't figure out what is causing the data usage.  I turned off mobile data as soon s I activated the device, and got the message that unless I am connected to WiFi.....(that is exactly what I wanted). We watched Netflix for about three hours, then the alerts started.  Like you we have many devices connected and never used over 2GB now all of a sudden we have used it in a matter of hours.  My husband called Verizon  and got the usual doubting Thomas response.  I understand that they don't know my device settings.  So over the phone we check all the settings and turned  off every possible culprit eating up the data and end the call.  By now I have purchased another gig for the month!  Assured we are NOT using mobile data, we continue on the IE path to bliss.  HA!  A few hours later I check the mobile data usage on the Verizon website and that darn thing is still using data.  After two more phone calls and two VERY uneventful trips to the local store we were told to take out the sim card.  This has stopped the data usage, but it defeats the purpose of having the data plan.  I could have just stuck with my Surface.  Verizon sent us a new sim card.  Its been installed and I have set my homepage to Verizon mobile data usage (just kidding) but I am on that site a lot.   I am surprised at the number of complaints about this device.  When we called the Verizon support acted as though this was the first time they had heard about this.   Loved your post, you should write for a living.

  • Time Machine window appears every hour

Every hour a pop-up window appears on my iMac as follows:
<Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time Machine - 2 TB”.
<The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make <more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled <backup.
<Open Time Machine preferences to select a larger backup disk or make the backup <smaller by excluding files.
However, Time Machine does not remove expired backups.  It repeats this message every hour.
This did not happen before I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Safari.
    How do I fix this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Airport Extreme requests new IP almost every hour

I bought a new TV (Samsung)that accesses the internet. I have an airport extreme setup with a password. Almost everyday I have to tell the TV the password again. I called the TV manufacturer (Samsung) and asked what to do. They said to get a static IP address from my internet provider. I called my internet provider. They said that my router was requesting a new IP almost every hour.
Is there a way to stop the airport extreme from doing this?
My cable modem (Motorola) and airport extreme are left ON 24/7

Do you have Comcast as your ISP by any chance? I have been experiencing some problems with my AEBSn and comcast as well. I've read in some other threads that there is something about Airport wireless routers and Comcast dynamic DHCP. Comcast will tell you that it's not their problem because if you can connect to the internet by plugging your computer directly into your cable modem using an ethernet connection, then it's not the modem. Apple will tell you it's your ISP not giving your wireless router a good IP. after countless hours of being on the phone with Apple and Comcast and rebooting my modem and AEBSn several different times and ways, someone at Comcast FINALLY told me to do something that worked. Here's what I did. Maybe it'll work for you:
With my computer on, the AEBSn on, and the cable modem on, First, Unplug your cable modem. Wait 10 seconds and then plug it back in and wait for the lights to come back on (not sure what kind of modem you have, but there will be a couple of lights that should come on and be steady and at least one light that will come on and flicker a bit).
Next, unplug your AEBS and leave it unplugged,
    Next, restart your computer.
Next, plug the AEBS back in WHILE your computer is starting up. Don't wait for it to completely start up. (I plugged mine back in right after I heard the "bong" sound when my Mac was starting back up.)
That worked for me at least.
your IP address on your AEBS will still seem like it's not right but at least it works (hopefully).
    Good Luck!

  • IMac reboots every day at 5:56 AM

Recently my work hours changed, so I'm now up at 5:30 AM instead of 6:30. Because of this, I was able to observe that my iMac G4 - sound asleep as I recently was at this hour - reboots every day at 5:56 AM precisely. Obviously some timed script is running, but I can't figure out what it is, where it "lives", and how to stop it. I have the Cocktail utility, so I ran the daily "cron" script - but the system did not reboot. The only things connected to the iMac are speakers, a Lacie 250 GB Firewire HD, and a M-Audio Keystation 49e USB keyboard (not powered on). I have no idea how long this has been going on since I've never been up this early until recently. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Problem solved - and boy do I feel stoopid!
After checking out all the suggestions offered, I went to visist the iMac in question (located in the "family" room in the basement) at 5:54 AM this morning, coffee in hand. At precisely 5:56 AM (by my watch) the UPS shut down for a moment and then turned back on. The UPS battery is obviously fried, so the UPS shutdown/restart "reboots" the iMac (set to restart after power failure). Since the iMac is in the basement, I must have missed the warning beeps that signal battery failure. So what causes the UPS to restart at 5:56 AM? I had this experience years ago at a firm located in an industrial park - some nearby factory had machinery that started up the same time every day - heavy duty stuff - and it sent a huge "spike" down the line which wrecked havoc with out network backups. I suspect the same thing here - something "heavy duty" goes on-line at 5:56 AM and creates a power "spike" (or whatever) - the UPS senses the "spike" and shuts down to "spare" the devices connected to it, but since it can no longer provide power while it's off, it effectively "reboots" the iMac.
Solution - buy a new UPS!
Thanks to all who chimed in - sorry it wasn't something more exotic!

  • WRT160Nv3 rebooting every 1-20 minutes

    Dear All,
After installation of WRT160Nv3 and firmware upgrade router rebooting every 1-20 minutes.
I did reset using hardware button and reboot from Web interface; returned to factory defaults and back to my settings - problem still the same.
    Any suggestions?

Well... thanks. I re-loaded  the firmware - nothing changed.
Actualy now I suspect that someone in the provider's network installed (or re-configured) an equipment  (computer or router) that works in wrong way - for instance gives IP to WAN.
Unfortunately WRT160N writes log in RAM and all records disappear during rebooting - so I can't trace the cause. But when I disconnect the WAN socket in router it works stable. When it connected to provider - it may work for several hours perfectly, but in rush hours it start rebooting

OSX now crashes every hour. For no obvious reason or trigger, suddenly OSX apps like Dock, desktops, launchpad, finder, toolbar, etc become unresponsive, although sometimes non OSX apps (like Chrome, TextMate, etc) remain functioning briefly, before the whole thing hangs and needs a hard reboot.
It is not apparent what I do to provoke the crash -- it happens while I am in seemingly any application, sometimes just reading a page and not taking any actions.
This started happening very suddenly two days ago. It might have happened around the time I updated ITunes but I'm not sure of this at all. And I never use ITunes or have it open.
Don't know how to diagnose the problem since nothing is accessible whence it freezes up on me.  I tried software update, but problem continued after. Would appreciate troubleshooting advice. Thanks!
    best,

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
