Reccomended internet speed for hd downloads?

I'm seriously considering buying an apple tv, and forgetting about buying a blue ray all together. We just got our first hd tv for christmas, and have directv hd service. We love hd in this house. Also we purchased a $200 sony sound system.
So I currently have 3 mbps dsl.... (actual 2.5 mbps)
(speed test reults)
http://www.speedguide.net/speedtest/results_img.php?test=A9VK5KDG4PWY
Att offers 6 mbps dsl where I am, it would speed down to about 5 mbps at my house. Comcast has 8mbps cable, with 12 mbps speed boosts. We want to avoid getting comcast they are too expensive, and are extremely unhappy with them (also why we have direc tv now)
Will the 2.5 or 5 mbps connections do? If I click rent will I have to wait several hours to start? I would like to only have to wait about 30 mins.
Thanks....

I don't think anyone REALLY knows until the update is released but here's my thinking (I just bought the 40GB model the other day and have comcast internet with a g-router). To get a sense I downloaded some HD Podcasts on Itunes- about 6 minutes long and they were roughly 200mb. Took about 4 minutes to download to my computer via ethernet so 50mb/min. Here's where my math gets fuzzy- "DVD Quality" rentals are 1.5 GB more or less so let's just assume that an HD rental is 4 GB (I picked 4GB b/c 200mb=6 minutes so 4GB=120 minutes). If it takes 4 minutes to download 200 mb (podcast) then it should take 80 minutes to download 4 GB (4GB/200mb=20, 4 minutesx20=80minutes). Of course that is downloaded via ethernet, not the wireless g from router to Apple tv, but the 200 mb podcast synced via wireless almost as quickly as it downloaded (at least on my system). So, depending on how big you think the HD movies are that may give you a sense. I just picked 4GB but I guess they could be twice that for all I know.
Lastly, I read a reporter at the speech note that the movie started playing after about 10% of the movie had downloaded so you can go back to my 4GB example and figure that 10% is 400mb which would be about 8 minutes.
So all that to say that maybe you should download some HD Podcasts and calculate how long they take to download. Sorry, it's late for me!

  • Minimal internet speed for video chat?

    Hi!
What is the minimal internet speed for using Video Chat?
    Regards, Soaman
Leader of Ljubljana BlackBerry Developer Group

    Hey soaman,
The only information I can find regarding this is that you need to be connected to WiFi in order to use the video chat.
Here are a few notes from the user guide:
I want to improve the chat quality:  You or the person you are having the Video Chat with may not have a sufficiently strong Wi-Fi signal. Try a different Wi-Fi network with a stronger connection, or move closer to the wireless access point.
My chat was dropped: Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network. You cannot switch Wi-Fi networks during a call.
    Hope this helps.

  • Port Forwarding to boost speeds for Vuze downloads

how can i forward ports on my airport extreme to my mac so i can boost speeds on vuze? on my pc i got downloads of 200kb/s whereas on my mac im extremely lucky if i get downloads over 30kb/s? please explain how i can speed up my downloads, and also explain how i can find out my macs local ip in relation to the network, thanks. Also any good port recommendations for vuze would be handy, thanks.

UberShinySheep, Welcome to the discussion area!
Forwarding ports will do nothing to increase the download speeds.
...and also explain how i can find out my macs local ip in relation to the network...
Go to System Preferences and open the Network preference pane. Click on "Built-in Ethernet". Look to the right and you will see the Mac's IP address.

  • Incredibly slow internet speed for the past 2 days...

Yesterday I bought an  ASUS N55U and spent a few hours setting it up. When I finally connected devices to the router, I had been reduced from 8mb (as offered by my ADSL Max connection) to a download speed of 0.1mb. I assumed this problem was due to the new router so I switched back to my BT homehub 3. Suprisingly I still have the identical problem and I have no idea how to fix it. Here are my results for the adsl line status:

Is there anyway I can fix this problem, and if so can I use my new router or should I just stick with the homehub 3?

Why my old hub is more stable than the new one?
why my speed keeps dropping when my line is capable of 20mb and I achieved it after the engineer's visit last week but a couple of days after started to go down?

  • Is it possible to limit internet speed for a specific ip adress?

I have a laptop and a ps3 connected to my router via wifi. I wanted to know if i can limit the bandwith for my ps3. I assigned the ps3 system a specific ip adress and now want to limit the speed it gets lower. I searched around and i think it is possible by changing some things around in the qos settings for a specific ip but do not have any idea what to do after going there. Can anyone help?

There has not been a native Apple OS version of IE for many years now, sorry.  The only way you will be able to do this is to install windows, either via bootcamp and dual-boot your machine, or in a virtual machine like Parallels or VMWare Fusion.
You can make the site think Safari is IE by using the Developer's Advanced menu to check the box - however, this only makes Safari "sign in" as IE.  If the program actually requires proprietary Microsoft Active-X features, then you need IE itself, and that will require windows.

  • Windows 7 64 Bit Very VERY slow internet speed

I just bought two new laptops for my wife and I and we've been having terrible trouble with download speeds since taking them out the box.
We are using the exact same configuration and IP as before only our last two computers were on XP and Vista but there were no issues whatsoever. I even went and bought a new router just in case that was the problem but it made absolutely no difference, leaving
me with the conclusion its a problem with the 64 bit version of Windows 7.
Currently I cannot even watch a Youtube video because after loading the first couple of seconds, it stops loading and then after a couple of minutes there's a quick burst of speed and stops again.
I can't complete a speed test on my connection on either laptop. Normally this would take only a few seconds but the site (speedtest.net) crashes every time using windows 7.
    Setup;
    Windows 7 64Bit
    Intel i3 2310M @ 2.1Ghz
    4Gb of RAM
My IP is VirginMedia UK on a 10Mb connection (same problem wired or wireless)
As you can imagine this is very frustrating since I have just paid out over £1000 to find my browsing experience has virtually at a stand still.
Any help in this matter would be very much appreciated

I recently had the same problem after installing Windows 7 64bit.  The internet speed for some reason was really slow.  After looking for a solution I tried to flush the DNS.  It worked.
    Open start menu
type "cmd" in the search then hit enter key
when the new screen opens type:
    ipconfig /release
     hit enter and then type
    ipconfig /flushdns
    hit enter and then type
    ipconfig /renew
hit enter and the problem is solved.

  • Slow internet speed with Site-to-Site VPN

I have 2 RV042 routers, one is version 1 and the other is Version 3 and both have up to date firmware loaded. Both ISPs are cable, one is Comcast and the other is Mediacom. I have set both MTUs to various different settings and set the upload download speeds in Bandwidth Management. Speedtest.net shows speeds at office # 1 of 30/5 and office # 2 is 10/2. The VPN connection is always active. My problem seems to be this, if data is ever being transferred between the offices the internet speed for office #2 slows down to 1.5/.12 but there isn't really any notable differences at office #1. Does anyone have any idea of what could cause the drop in speed.

This makes perfect sense depending on the size of the file. Bandwidth is limited to the speeds you stated, no matter what resource is using them--internet or vpn. Also, a large factor is that with asymmetrical bandwidth that when a lot of upload bandwidth is used, the download bandwidth suffers as well.
I bet most of the time when this happens, the file is being transferred from office #2, thereby using up all the available upload bandwidth.
Office #1 won't see the effects from file transfer because the file transfer is using download bandwidth not upload bandwidth.

  • Apple TV and slow internet speeds?

I live in Ireland and unlike the US, we have quite slow internet with a national max of about 7mb (which is what I have)
How would the streaming work with this kind of network?

    Iremonger wrote:
Are those speeds, related to the stated internet speeds, or the download speeds? The usual download speed is around 600kbs for me, hit 1.3mps once but haven't got close since then.
I have a fixed 1Mbps connection in UK, and I strongly suspect that for rentals, the new device will do what the old one did - in other words it will not let you play until enough has downloaded to theoretically allow you to watch the movie completely as the tail end of the film downloads in the background.
I hope that the new device will save the rental stream to the device's internal solid state memory (8GB) to allow you to pause/rewind/restart/rewatch etc during the playback period WITHOUT having to redownload.
If on the other hand it stores nothing, buffers a small amount, and relies on a fairly nippy internet connection to stream live, you, I and many others without high speed connections will be stuffed for rentals.
Anything in your iTunes library however that's compatible will be limited for playback by your home network speeds not the internet.

  • Network speed for spatial oracle-Arcsde databases

    Hi all
I am working in a oracle -ArcSDE production database environment. The data size is huge and more than 100 users are connected to the database. Wht should be the Reccomended Network speed for the database?
    Thanks in Advance
    Albin

    Albin,
Obviously the faster the network, the quicker you will move data from the database to the client. However, in most cases (at least with a 1Gb network) I find that the neither the database or the network are usually the bottleneck with ArcMap, but instead the client-side "SDE"/rendering process. This is especially true when returning large numbers of geometries. The 10.x engine just chokes on anything more than a few thousand objects, and unfortunately the render model they use causes a full refresh on any movement / zoom, repeating the painful process over and over.
In a nutshell, it is simply a poorly designed architecture for today's loads. Our custom Java WebStart GIS client runs circles around it. Hopefully the new project they are working on will improve performance, especially when using native SDO_GEOMETRY data - but I haven't really had time to pound on it yet to verify that one way or another.

  • Slow Internet Speed C50-30

I recently purchased a Lenovo C50-30 Desktop and my internet speed is very slow. I have my old computer next to it and it runs just fine on the internet (Using wireless connection). Any ideas on how to increase the internet speed for the Lenovo? Thanks

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
Are you connected to Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi? If so, disconnect the Ethernet cable or adapter and test.
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

The only thing you can do is pause the download. There is no way to divide it into pieces.

Do you ever visit a friend or realtive with a Mac who has faster internet? Maybe the local library has Macs on a fast line. If so, get a USB thumb drive and put this link on it from your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Then put this link on the drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429
When you are at some place that has a Mac with a decent download speed. insert the thumb drive in that Mac and click on the first link ("DL1399") and direct the download to your thumb drive. Now do the same this with the second link.
The installer files will now be on the thumb drive and, when you get home, drag them from the thumb drive to your desktop. Install the Combo update first.
