Recommendations for Installing SL

I may eventually end up doing an erase and install of SL. But, I want to do an easy install first to see what works and what does not. If the easy install seems good, then I might end up being satisfied with it. I should mention that I have two spare Clones of my current 10.5.8 setup.
The two easy install options I am considering are (1) upgrading and (2) erasing/installing plus using a Time Machine backup to grab my data and programs. I have no idea which of these two approaches is likely to have the greatest probability of a significant error or combination of errors. Any thoughts?
Also, the consensus used to be that an upgrade would, generally speaking, produce as good a result as an erase and install. Any thoughts in this regard on the current situation?
And, I have a question about using a Time Machine (TM) backup in the install process. Using TM, can I choose exactly what I want to transfer to my SL setup? For example, can I just transfer my data and my previously installed programs? TM didn't exist in my last incarnation as a Mac user.
Thanks for any help you can provide. I guess my disk will get here eventually today. It was on the truck at 7:20 this morning.

To be honest I didn't see it Their was an Options button where you select for printers, languages, X10, ect. and a page where you select which drive to install OS X on, but that's all we saw. It's probably still there tucked away somewhere, but we truly didn't need it
Just plan ahead before you do the upgrade. SuperDuper took just a few seconds to upgrade BUT the actual backup took almost an hour (which would normally take us around 20 minutes). The actual 10.6 install took us around 40 minutes. Everything went rather smoothly. I have two other Macs to upgrade (hopefully tomorrow when their discs come) and I hope they both go as smoothly

  • Recommendations for Installing a new system on new drives.

I'm replace the hard drive that the g5 came with, with 2 wd raptors. I plan to keep the existing drives short term, as a back up.
The system is less than a week old, so there is very little to back up, but if there 'back up settings to disk button', that anyone knows about, that would be very useful.
I'm assuming, and from reading the manual (yes I did) installing tiger on the new top slot drive will be easy. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The real question is, what the best configuration for partitions on the new drives? In windows, I liked to keep my system partition fairly small (5 gig) to speed defragmention, I'd put my programs on the same psysical drive but a different logical partition, and files in 2 or 3 partitions on the 2nd drive.
How does all this sound to you mac hands, and is there anything I ought to know or do before I take the plunge? §: )

    Hi Maxis;
With OS X, defragmentation is done by the operating system so that is not a valid reason to partition.
Generally, I recommend that a system disk not be partitioned into parts that will be used productively. It tends to impact performance negatively because of the increased head movement between partitions. I currently have my system disk partitioned but the second partition is being used for long term storage of archived data. The data is always moved to that partition during off hours.

Unfortunately, Safari cannot be updated past 5.1.10 on a Mac running v10.6.8.
So, the options are to upgrade to a newer OS X or use Firefox or  Chrome.

You are in the typical catch22.. you cannot use the TC without setting it up.. you cannot set it up without Lion.. so you can install the latest utility.
Do you have any reasonably current iOS devices.. they can run the iOS version of the utility.. that will allow you to set up the TC.
Or invite a friend with a laptop running at least Lion
Or take the TC back and get a plain USB hard drive and backup to that.

  • Hyper-v 2012 R2 server core recommendations for single server setup

    Hi All,
Next weekend I will be installing a brand new Dell 720 server for a client of mine.
I would like to hear some recommendations on how to install this hypervisor.
Let me state that I have had some experience with virtualization technology  in the past with VMWARE ESXi.
This is a small client with under 10 users but I have learned that with the 2012 product offering you cannot get Small Business Server any more. I know Microsoft has Windows server 2012 Essentials but you would have to have Exchange server in the cloud which
my client does not want. He wants to run his Exchange server in house.
Also he needs Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Server) because his accounting application requires it.
He has an existing Windows 2003 domain controller that eventually has to be decommissioned because it is too old and slow.
So I thought I install Hyper-v 2012 R2 core on the new server and then create 2 VMs:
    1) Windows 2012 STD to run as a secondary domain controller.
    2) Windows 2012 STD member server with Exchange server 2013 and Remote Desktop Services role.
    My questions here are these:
    1) Do I install the Hypervisor in workgroup or domain mode?
    2) When I am finished with the old server do I transfer the AD FSMO roles onto the VM that is acting as a domain controller?
The new server has 2 CPUs. How does Microsoft licensing go here? I know that Windows 2012 STD gives me 2 instances with the same product key on the same server for 1 CPU. What happens if you have 2?
Can someone give me some insight on how to go about this? I remember that I found this easier with VMWARE Esxi.
Now with Hyper-V I need to also get a management workstation with Windows 8 professional on it to manage the Hyper-V core server.
    Thanks and regards
    Alfred

    In regard to the VM's:
1.) DC: If you're going to be installing a second domain controller that is 2012 R2, you might consider reading this guide first.
    http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2012/07/30/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-or-windows-server-2003-r2-to-windows-server-2012.aspx
2.) Exchange: Here's the guide for installing Exchange 2013 on Server 2012.  I don't believe R2 is supported yet for 2013.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14506.how-to-install-exchange-2013-on-windows-server-2012.aspx
3.) Host: You'd install the host in domain mode....but that point may be moot after you read #5.
4.) FSMO: I would verify the health of the 2012 DC before moving the roles.  All too often I'll see a new DC get stood up, sysvol won't be published, the engineer will be in a rush to move the FSMO's, and things get a little sideways.  Ultimately
you don't HAVE to move the FSMO's until you are ready to decommission the 2003 box.
5.) Licensing:  No licensing rights convey with Hyper-V Core, so this may not be best for your scenario.  See the queen mother of all Hyper-V licensing posts here -
    http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=13090
For what it's worth, plenty of SMB's are going to Office 365 to avoid the on-prem administration headache, but your client wants what your client wants. Sorry if this isn't the news you wanted but I hope it helps.

  • I installed a new hard drive in my MacBook. Is there a way to download os 10.6 from internet to DVD for install?

I installed a new hard drive in my MacBook. Is there a way to download os 10.6 from internet to DVD for install?

    Hi C.Mathew Mulligan,
If you would like you can your boot your computer into recovery mode using Command+R There you can select re-download it from the internet. You will not have any of your old data on your new computer, but that is because you replaced your hard drive. So if you would like your old data to be there on your new computer I would recommend to back up your old hard drive to Time machine then Boot it into recovery using Command+R and click on restore with Time machine. Once that has completed successfully you not only should have 10.6 But you will also have all of your data from your old computer.

Do I need to upgrade to 10.5.xx? Will this platform suport 10.6.xx? If 10.6 will work do I need to install 10.5 first?
    Thanks...

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.

  • I did the recommended re-install to resolve the missing MSVCR80.dll file. This worked, but I am now stymied by two error messages: "Apple Mobile Device failed to start" and "Apple application support not found". How to overcome?

That worked, however I now get two error messages when I install I Tunes:
o  Apple Mobile Device failed to start.
o  Apple Application Support not found.
This were of course deleted in the recommended re-install procedure to resolve the dll file, but repeated uninstalls and installs simply bring up these two error messages with a recommendation to install I Tune again. Installing the new I Tunes version seems to be problematic per the discussion groups and has no simple solution. SHould not the Genius bar be able to resolve this at an Apple Store? Want to buy a new I Phone 5S, but this problem effectively stymies this.

  • Why i need all that b***s*** for installing oracle db?

As all you know to install for instance oracle 11g on redhat, oel, centos, fedora, etc... oracle recommends to install more than 600MB of garbage in the OS...
For instance if we have a minimal redhat install we would need to install more than 580 packages to run oracle. These packages are grouped in 12 groups. they are installed with yum or up2date depending on your OS version:
yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" "Editors" "Graphical Internet" "Development Libraries" "Development Tools" "Server Configuration Tools" "Administration Tools" "Base" "Fonts" "Legacy Fonts" "Hardware Support" "System Tools" "X Window System"
Beside that we also need to make sure that the following packages are installed:
    yum install binutils-2.* elfutils-libelf-0.* glibc-2.* glibc-common-2.* libgcc-4.* libstdc++-4.* make-3.* elfutils-libelf-devel-0.* glibc-devel-2.* gcc-4.* gcc-c++-4.* libstdc++-devel-4.* unixODBC-2.* libaio libaio-devel unixODBC-devel sysstat compat-libstdc++
But what's REALLY FUNNY, is that if we install a NON-PAYED version of Oracle (Oracle XE) we don't need any of the previous b***s***!!!! This is annoying, really annoying... we only need to install a sweet sweet RPM, 200MB, and e got it there...
So, anyone here can explain me (convince me) why the h*** we need to install 580 packages and at least 600MB of packages to get oracle ready to be installed?
Btw, I install oracle on linux for about 8 years, so I don't need explanations... I need to be convinced that Oracle could not do better than this... ;)

Or even better create that and some Amazon EC2 AMI's too...
For me it makes sense to have a Just enought OS for Oracle Database to run... Despite most people refer to JeOS as beeing related to VM environment's (for instance Ubuntu JeOS) the JeOS concept is not exclusive to VM's. And it sure even makes more sense to have a JeOS for running in an VM such as Amazon EC2.
EC2 AMIs with an Oracle Database in it already exist. OEL AMIs are being worked on if they're not already there.Exists in US :) not europe...
If you take a closer look at those AMI's you surelly find at least 500MB of software installed that's not needed to run Oracle 11g. I may be wrong but the OEL5 that comes installed on those AMI's eats ~300MB of memory without database running... And for instance I have EC2 instances (fedora 8) running that only uses 65MB memory without the oracle database running... If you think that a 32bit instance in amazon has at most 1.7GB, those 240 MB makes all difference to run databases! If I use the OEL, I waste 250 MB of precious memory that I can use in my database SGA.

  • New iMac - recommendations for running Win 7

Okay, so I'm picking up my new 27" iMac today. I plan on installing Win 7 to run a few programs that I may need in the future (trying to downsize to one desktop), although OS X will be my main system. I know that Boot Camp is part of the OS now, but is it better to install Parallels or VM and use that for my windows install. I am moving from my 2008 Macbook Pro to the iMac and I haven't had any experience with any of the methods for installing Win 7. What is the recommend method?
Additionally, how much space should I allocate to Win 7 as a recommendation? And last, what version of Win 7, Pro or Home Premium?
Thanks in advanvce for your opinions.!
    Mark

By bootstrap I'm assuming you mean Boot Camp, this has been integrated into OS X since Leopard was released 3.5 years ago. To install Windows (must be Win 7!!!!) run BootCamp Assistant and follow the on-screen instructions.
If you need further assistance then I'd recommend navigating to the Boot Camp forum.
As far as what is better, Fusion, Parallels or Boot Camp that is a personal decision based on your needs. If you are running 3D games or other types of sophisticated 3D graphics then Boot Camp would be recommended. However if you are not then either Fusion or Parallels would offer the advantage of running OS X and Windows side by side so you can easily switch back and forth.
My suggestion is to research and see if the applications you plan on running in Windows are available in OS X or to see if there are substitutes.
Kappy's explanation has some good advice on the MS Windows on a Mac alternatives.

  • Recommendations for running Windows on Macbook with OSX Lion version 10.7.2?

I Just bought a new MacBook Pro, running Lion, version 10.7.2. I am looking to run some windows applications on my mac, including AutoCAD, etc. I would ideally like to install bootcamp on my MacBook, but from what i understand, Lion is only compatible with Windows 7... I have Windows XP and VMWARE Fusion that I had run on my previous MacBook, however, I am unable to install VMWARE Fusion on my new MacBook (Lion). Any recommendations for running higher-profile windows apps on a mac without having to purchase Windows7 or a new version of VMWARE? Thanks

Newer computer = newer drivers and apps. You can only run Windows 7 using Boot Camp Assistant with the newer computers. Or, you can download and install Parallels or Fusion (the most current versions work in Lion). If using Parallels or Fusion you can install XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc.
Or, you could try the free VirtualBox.

The issue of changing native folder hierarchy and/or naming conventions has little to do with solid state media and everything to do with the container and header data that links the audio/video streams with the metadata and thus allows the content or "media essence" to be properly decoded and played.  This is the very reason to use a tool like Prelude or Premiere's Media Browser or even Bridge or Lightroom or a third party logging tool like metafuze or shotputpro, or dedicated camera format software such as sony xdcam clipbrowser or panasonic p2 browser, redcine x, ect, as these tools all are designed to parse the captured A/V data and make properly syntaxed edits to the metadata either embedded directly into the media container or in Prelude and Premiere's case can also be written back to a sidecar or associated XMP file, which is a flavor of XML that contains all the original captured metadata plus any changes and/or additions made via these tools.
The dangers come into play when changes to the native file naming convention or folder hierarchy are done directly to the media content via finder on mac or explorer on windows, as changing at that level can break the relationship between the metadata stream and the media essence since the changes are not being written to the metadata or content headers or being handled in a manner referred to as transmuxing..
Prelude & Premiere's Media Browser both allow for looking into the native files non-destructively and safely modifying either the metadata linked to the native media or also allows for a transcode to be done which will then copy or recreate a new media file in whatever format selected along with a new metadata stream.
Prelude is a nice utility and Premiere's Media Browser an amazing tool for organizing, modifying and selectively ingesting media and or making quick selects and assemblies.

  • Latest recommendation for custom screen development?

easy points here  - get 'em while their hot!  : )
I'm trying to confirm my thoughts/assumptions on the development of custom screens.  We are installing the various pieces of NW04s and expect the majority of our users to access ECC transactions through the SAP Portal (using Web GUI for HTML).  Also, we will have a significant number of custom screen requirements; some may be enhancements to existing SAP delivered screens; others may be new screen development.
What is SAP's latest recommendation for custom screen development?
More specifically, what are various options and their advantages and disadvantages?
    For example:
    **Web Dynpro for Java
    + easy Portal integration
    - requires NW Dev Studio/Infrastructure
    **Web Dynpro for Java
    + Development tools within Workbench
    - more difficult to integrate in the Portal
**Z transaction development with Screen Painter
    **HTML/JavaScript or similar
    etc....
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Brian,
For me , I have only two choices
    1. Web Dynpro for Java
Great front end IDE to work with, only issue could be the performance issue, while Java is trying to communicate with SAP ECC.
    2. Web Dynpro for ABAP
Relatively new, however a good tool to work with. Performance improvement compared to Java Web Dynpro.
I don't think you should have a concern of integrating this with Portal, as you have a separate iView for ABA Web Dynpro. The screen can be developed on the SAP ECC and then can be called from the Portal screen.
You still have other options like developing normal dynpro - but that will not give a look and feel of the web interface. BSP / PCUI are the other choices but given the roadmap of SAP for UI, I would stick to Web Dynpro for ABAP / Java.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
    Regards,
    Ravi
