Recover after reinstalling Windows

My installation of Windows 7 was corrupted and i had to reinstall it, and all of the programs along with it. All of my data (pictures, catalog, etc) was on a separate hard drive that was untouched.  I've got Lightroom up and running without much effort, but the color coding of my photos is gone; they all show grey.  This is very important because i use the color codes to drive my workflow and publishing rules.
i recall something about how certain aspects of LR are not in the catalog, but i can't remember what i'm supposed to do to get them back. I searched the forum but i'm not finding the information easily.  Can anyone help?
BTW, Adobe should make this easier with some kind of backup/recovery tool.   it's common for folks to have to reinstall Windows.

Thank you very much for your help.    Here's what i did to get where I am:
1.  My photos and catalog were on the D: drive and unaffected when i reinstalled Windows.
2. I reinstalled LR on my C: drive and got the license reestablished
3.  I double-clicked on the catalog on the D: drive and it came up along with my pictures
and here's how things are:
1.  all my pictures are grey.  Previously i had modified the labels for each color to give a meaning to "red", "green," etc.
2.  in the catalog, the item "store presets with this catalog" is UNchecked.  I don't know why, and now i'm thinking i should check it but i will wait for your advice first.
3. if the label sets were stored on the C: drive, they are gone now.
4.  I was using Matt Dawson's LR backup and i stored those on my D: drive so i'm hoping that will save me somehow.  I don't really know how to restore from that backup and I'm waiting to hear from Matt.  If i recall correctly, it's a manual process, which is OK with me if i can just understand how to do it.
any suggestions?

  • Can't open PSD file after reinstall windows 7 64 bit

After reinstalling windows 7 stopped opening some files PSD files. I try to open them with Photoshop version 6, it does not work. I tried to open them on the laptop, same garbage. Tell me what the problem is. And how to fix it.
    Thank you.

Perhaps these files were corrupted. I can not say how it happened, but it is quite possible. And the files are no longer open, immediately after reinstalling windows? Or not?
If so, it is quite rare in my opinion. You are very unlucky. Try reinstalling photoshop. Then check these files were opened or not. If not. Then the only option is a special software. I would use on your site this program
    http://www.photoshop.recoverytoolbox.com/
(it is not free but is very good and is not expensive. But in the future you will immune from such situations. )
As well you can learn more about your problem here:

  • How to sync with Firefox sync after reinstalling Windows? I only have one device.

Just like this user I was syncing only one device. After reinstalling windows, I can't reconnect and I don't have the recovery key...
What can I do? To access my bookmarks, favorites, etc?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I'm missing the recovery key and don't synch with other devices so I guess that means I'm out of luck...
Maybe this is something that can be added to the roadmap for future improvements. I don't see a reason why you can't get your information back after a reset if you've only got one device.

  • Sync problem after reinstalling windows

Last week I had Windows XP with the latest version of iTunes and my iPod could sync without any problems. But after I installed Windows 7, even if I have the same iTunes version, it won't sync anymore. I even tried a reset on the iPod and reinstalling iTunes, nothing works. I don't even get an error message. All it says is this:
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. An internal device error occured.
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. A folder was specified instead of a file.
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. An unknown error occured (0xE8004006).
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. There are too many files open currently.
Another one with a duplicate file, but I can't get it to appear right now.
It's always a different one. And sometimes iTunes even crashes and I have to reopen it.
    What should I do?

have chosen to manually manage my iTunes library rather than copying all these MP3s to the iTunes folder.
Do you mean you checked *Manually manage music and videos* when the iPhone is selected? This is completely sepearate from managing yoru library. This allows you to manually manage the content on the iPhone.
Can I backup iTunes without actually making a backup of all my music files?
Yes. Copy /Music/iTunes/folder to the external drive.
My problem is that after reinstalling Windows my iPhone now wants to erase itself
So you have already reinstalled Windows?
If so, you cannot backup anything that is not there since you you already erased it when you reinstalled Windows.
BEFORE you reinstall Windows, you need to Deauthorize iTunes and backup /Music/iTunes/folder and all your media.

  • Cannot sync device after reinstall Windows

Cannot sync device after reinstall Windows 7.
It is fine when transfer from devices to itunes, but cannot transfer from iTunes to devices. Computer is authorize, same apple store login on both itunes and ipad, but it just wouldn't allow me transfer the apps.

Was this installed from the CD or from a download from HP?
With one system working and this one not working, it sounds like an issue with the software than anything else.

  • TS1702 After reinstalling windows, I cannot transfer app purchases to my iphone.

I had to wipe the hard drive on my computer after it got a virus that I was unable to remove. I backed everything up before wiping the hard drive. After reinstalling windows, I installed itunes and synced my iphone with my computer. Itunes recognizes that I purchased apps previously as they downloaded to my library, and I can make new purchases in the store. However, after purchasing an app, when I try to drag and drop the app to my phone through itunes, a little circle with a slash through it appears and it will not let me download the app to my phone. I can download apps through my phone, but I would like to be able to sync them with my computer as well since I have to put music on my iphone and I generally only purchase through amazon. How can I fix this? Thanks!

I am having the same issue. I tried rebooting/resetting my iPhone 4s running 5.0.1. Restarted iTunes. Still unable to update Apps.  Screen is clouded/gray.  Cannot even move the Apps on the screen. When I press/hold an App on the iPhone to make them jiggle, I use to get the circle X on the App to delete. That is no longer available.

  • Can't access my apple lossless files on external hard drive after reinstalling windows 8.1

    Hi guys
New to this. I reinstalled windows 8.1 after windows continually asking me to change my password after not recognising it despite it being the right one. All my apple lossless tunes are on my external hard drive. Windows keeps saying 'I don't have access to this file currently'. I tried right clicking on hard drive, clicked properties, and tried assigning administrator rights to everyone but still no luck. Contacted windows who said it was an apple issue so here I am.
Can anyone help. I've got 900 albums on this hard drive and the thought of ripping them all again is stressing me.
    Thanks guys
    Stuart

Changing the path to the media folder doesn't change which database iTunes opens. If your original database is on the external drive then shift-start-iTunes and use the choose option to open it. If you no longer have access to the original database shift-start-iTunes and create a new empty library at X:\iTunes, where X: is the external drive letter, ensure the media folder is set to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, move all of your content inside X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, use File > Add Folder to Library > X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. There are some scripts near the end that can extract ratings, play counts and playlists from your device and the rest of the tip explains how you backup and restore the device with the new library to avoid losing data.

  • How to keep my playlists and ratings in iTunes after reinstalling Windows ?

    Hi,
I would like to know how can I keep my playlists and ratings after reinstalling a fresh copy of windows.
    Thank you in advance,

You need to go to each device and make sure there is a wireless profile configured for the SSID, and then save it as the default wireless connection. This may be easier if you configure each device prior do disabling the SSID.

  • Restoring Infinity after reinstalling Windows

    Hi
Should know this but can't recall. I'm having to reinstall Windows Garbage I mean Vista.
I have a BT Infinity CD but don't think the engineer used it when I was first connected.
Is there anything special I have to do to restore internet after reinstalling Vista? Do I have to create a new password for my HH2 etc? (Can't think of the old one!)
    Many thanks
    Longshanks

Reinstalling windows wont have any effect on the home hub itself, other than any settings/logins windows uses to connect will need entering again in the new windows install. For example if you connect via WiFi youll have to enter your WiFi username/password, if you want to change hub settings youll have to type your hub login as your browser wont remember it anymore. If youre using a wired ethernet connection, the new install of vista should very simply connect and work.
In my experience reinstalls are always a lot safer with a 2nd pc/laptop nearby to get online to download any updates/drivers and ask/google for assistance with any random problems.

  • Some album covers disappear after reinstalling windows

Before reinstalling windows i back up my music folder (iTunes), reinstall windows, itunes, add the music again and after that some covers doesn't appear. This shouldn't be,  even if i rerip my original cd theres no cover this time.
Example: Morrissey - kill uncle, remastered 2013, David Bowie - Aladdin Sane (40th anniversary).
And yes, i have used the obtain cover feature on itunes many times.

    Fixed with itunes 11.1.3

  • Laptop keeps booting up after Reinstalling Windows with Recovery Disks

My hard drive died. I replaced it and reinstalled windows using the recovery disks that came with it.
After a successful installation (formatting the drive, installing software in 3 CDs) the computer keeps rebooting endlessly. The reboot process never leaves the intial TOSHIBA screen that access the CMOS therefore windows never starts.
    What is wrong?
    Thanks in advance....

I got it to work..... The solution: Even though I was not getting any errors during the recovery (only when rebooting after the install) I read about issues with the software recognizing the computer as the one entitle for that installation. I downloaded the "DMI Update Utility" installed it and reinstalled the software again from the recovery CDs with no issues this time..... Thanks for your interest Techman....
