Recurring drive integrity problems

Hi all,
Ive had Drive Genius installed on my comp for a while now, which i do recommend btw! Its surprisingly useful...
Anyway, recently my HD seems to be having a lot of drive integrity issues, DG has a little icon at the top right of the screennext to where the aiport/bluetooth/date and time things are that changes colour whenever a problem is found.
The warning is coming up at least once every few days, and if i boot up from the OS X install DVD and run disk utility it does say there is a problem (usually its a case of one thing is off by 1 or something, i cant remember off the top of my head) and fixes it, however ive found if i just restart the computer it seems to fix it.
Is something wrong with the HD for it to keep doing this, or is it something ive installed that might not be agreeing with the computer?
Cheers!

If you have concerns about your hard drive's integrity you should use a utility that can pull the SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) log files from your hard drive and review them carefully. You can download SMART Utility from Volitans Software and use the demo mode to view the logs. If the SMART logs indicate there is a problem then back up your data and seek getting the hard drive replaced. If the SMART logs indicate that the hard drive hardware is OK then proceed with freeing up some hard drive space (I suggest having at least 75GB free on a 500GB HDD) to prevent performance issues.

  • HOWTO: Create a Boot Configuration That Has No Driver Signature Checks. Disable Driver Integrity Checks and Install a Custom Non-Signed Driver

    Hello,
    Recently, I had a task where I needed to install a custom non-signed driver onto my Windows 8 64-bit setup. As it is known, Windows has driver enforcement policies that, as a security measure, do not allow you to install non-signed drivers.
    I did not want to alter my current boot configuration so I decided to create a separate boot entry that would have driver signing policies disabled. For some reason I did not find any good source that would contain a step-by-step instruction on completing
    this task, so I decided that I'd better share my experience here.
    Lastly, there are multiple ways how you could turn off driver enforcement policies, but I find the way to do this via boot manager.
    Here's how you can do that.
    1. Press WindowsKey and type 'cmd' (without quotes) to find Command prompt, then click Command prompt icon. If you have User Account Control turned on, hold Ctrl+Shift keys pressed when clicking the icon.
    This will force Windows to ask you for elevation of command prompt. Elevation is necessary for editing Boot Configuration Database (BCD), the database used by Windows boot manager to store boot settings.
    2. In the User Account Control window click Yes to confirm elevation of command shell.
    3. At the command prompt type
    bcdedit
    to list your BCD entries.
    This will give you an output like:
    Windows Boot Manager
    identifier {bootmgr}
    device partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume2

    The section that starts with Windows Boot Manager lists current settings for the boot menu. Here you find what boot entry is chosen by default, this is the one what you will boot into if you do not select any boot entry in the
    boot menu.
    The following record
    default {current}
    indicates that by default my Windows boots into configuration which I use at the moment (currently booted Windows configuration).
    To find out what exactly is current configuration, look into the list of boot entries, records that contain boot loader configuration and are titled as Windows Boot Loader in the bcdedit output.
    For example, the entry shown above is one of my boot configurations. This is one of the boot entries listed on the boot manager screen when I start my PC and it looks like:
    Windows Boot Loader
    identifier {a329b5d0-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240}
    device vhd=[D:]\win8prowmc01.vhdx

    This record has a unique GUID identifier that can be used to reference this boot entry, which is:
    identifier {a329b5d0-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240}
    If we look at the Windows Boot Manager settings, we'll see this entry is the first in order to be displayed in the boot menu on OS start (I marked the unique bits):
    displayorder {a329b5d0-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240}
    {a329b5cc-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240}
    It references my VHD drive, a virtual hard drive where my Windwos 8 setup is residing:
    device vhd=[D:]\win8prowmc01.vhdx
    And it also specifies that the boot manager must use UEFI BIOS extension code to access my Windows boot partition:
    path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi
    3. Now locate the current boot entry.
    Current boot entry contains boot settings used to boot into Windows configuration to which you are currently booted. It is referenced in the list of boot entries as a Windows Boot Loader record that has the {current} keyword inside and may
    look like:
    Windows Boot Loader
    identifier {current}
    device vhd=[D:]\win8rtm.vhdx
    path \Windows\system32\winload.efi

    Because we are more than happy with current configuration and want to base our new boot configuration on these settings, we need to copy this boot entry ({current}) to a new boot entry.
    This is done by running the following command:
    C:\Windows\system32>bcdedit /copy {current} /d "No Driver Signature Check"
    Parameter /d here indicates that the following sequence of characters specifies the display name for the new boot entry that we are creating. The name inside the double quotes will be displayed in the boot menu when you boot your Windows.
    In other words, if you know restart your system, you'll see the new No Driver Signature Check in the boot menu.
    When copied, the entry is automatically given a new GUID identifier, so upon running the command above, you'll see the following line returned (you'll have an other GUID since these are unique identifiers):
    The entry was successfully copied to {a329b5d8-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240}.
    4. Make sure the entry has been successfully created.
    Run the same bcdedit. (You may specify /enum or /v, or both /enum /v parameters at the prompt to get more detail about boot entries, but simple bcdedit is just enough to see the new entry):

    The entry has been created and given a unique a329b5d8-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240 ID. It now has exactly same boot settings as the boot entry we used to boot into current configuration of Windows.
    5. Modify created  No Driver Signature Check entry and specify that Windows must have driver integrity checks disabled when booted using this boot entry.
    Any modifications to boot entries are made using /set parameter. To indicate that we modify a specific boot entry, we must specify the GUID for the No Driver Signature Check record, which is:
    identifier {a329b5d8-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240}
    In other words, to edit (add or change) an option for the boot entry, we need to use the following command syntax:
    C:\Windows\system32>bcdedit /set GUID <boot_option> [<option_value>]
    First, we must specify that we don't want integrity checks be made. This is done by adding the loadoptions option and setting it to DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS value:
    C:\Windows\system32>bcdedit /set {a329b5d8-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240} loadopti
    ons DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
    The operation completed successfully.
    6. Verify that load option has been added.
    Run the bcdedit command:
    Windows Boot Loader
    identifier {current}
    device vhd=[D:]\win8rtm.vhdx
    path \Windows\system32\winload.efi
    description Windows 8 Enterprise RTM

    7. Add the option that turns on test signing mode and disables checks of driver signature.
    Adding the testsigning option and setting it to ON does the trick for us:
    C:\Windows\system32>bcdedit /set {a329b5d8-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240} TESTSIGNING ON
    8. Now we have a boot entry that enables Windows not to do integrity checks and digital signature validation.
    We check it by running bcdedit:
    Windows Boot Loader
    identifier {a329b5d8-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240}
    device vhd=[D:]\win8rtm.vhdx
    path \Windows\system32\winload.efi
    description No Driver Signature Check
    locale en-US
    loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
    inherit {bootloadersettings}
    recoverysequence {a329b5c3-fb29-11e1-a74d-f2c962d62240}
    integrityservices Enable
    recoveryenabled Yes

    9. Type 'exit' without quotes to exit from command prompt, and restart Windows.
    Upon booting you will be present with a new boot option to start Windows in configuration that allows you to install custom non-signed drivers.
    Hope this will help anybody to create their own custom boot configurations.

    Sending by Dropbox where, To who, to what computer? As your does not start up.
    You need to take at least the OS disc to a work Mac computer and create DMG from the OS install disc then restore that DMG to USB thumb drive. Then you can boot the computer from that thumb drive and install the OS. That is if your hard drive is functioning correctly.
    Then you can use the App disc in the external CD/DVD drive to load up all the included Applications that come with your version of OS X.

      These resets appear to coincide with a clearing of the cached queries for the DSN from memory, breaking all my sub queries that try to use the initial cached one.  I am grasping at straws to discover the reset culprit, the DSN tests always show OK, there is not packet loss at the switch level.  If anyone has some suggestions, I am all ears!

    previous version was ok. any further suggestions?
    litkidNone of that stuff is necessary. This is sufficient:
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");This works in production for me.
    Your problem is that your executable JAR manifest Class-Path doesn't include the ojdbc14.jar OR that JAR isn't where your Class-Path says it should be relative to your executable JAR.

  • Portal BW Integration Problem - Role Menu Error

    Hi,  I have a web template with a role menu on it.  The application works fine when I execute it directly on the BW Server.  But, whenever I execute the application through our portal and select a node on the role menu I receive a windows error dialog with the following message:
    A runtime error has occurred.
    Do you wish to Debug?
    Line: 250
    Error: Permission Denied
    [Yes] [No}
    Seems like Portal/BW integration problem.
    Can anyone help?

  • External drive recognition problem

    I am having issues with my iMac recognizing an external drive. I have:
    iMac 5,1 10.4.11, Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 1GB Memory, PIONEER DVR-112d in a BYTECC ME-525U2FW Aluminum External enclosure connected through Firewire.
    The iMac initially recognized the drive, no problem. Trouble is, when I turn off the drive and then power it back up, the iMac can't recognize it. I was able to solve it initially by powering down the drive, unplugging it from the firewire, reconnecting to firewire, and the powering up the drive again.
    System profiler states all software up to date.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
    Has performed this way since install, which was about 72 hours ago.
    When first connected through firewire and turned on, drive immediately recognized by iMac. Drive works, both ripping and burning. Turned drive off. Went to power up drive, and problem arose.

    It has to do with the HZ definition.
    Thanks for any help anyone can give!

    dsb,
    Here is a link to a lengthy thread on this very problem. There appears to be a workaround or two mentioned in the post:

    Let me know if the suggestions in that thread help out!

  • Firewire Drive/Camcorder Problems with FCP

    I seem to have a recurring problem connecting a DV camcorder and a firewire hard drive simultaneously. Most recently I was trying to set up FCP to output to a camcorder I had connected - and during the configuration, my hard drive (a western digital MyBook) un-mounted while FC was running. I couldn't get it back for awhile and thought I'd lost my client's project and all the rest I had on that drive. Luckily it returned. But I've had this problem in the past with Avid system on a PC, in that case a Seagate drive...it makes me think I'm doing something wrong here. I'm not the savviest when it comes to technical issues with hardware & such, I really just want to edit.
    Also, twice within the year my logic board on my powerbook g4 has been replaced due to a bad firewire, another issue that happened in mid-project. I don't know if the camera did it, or the drive. The tech at Apple said I hadn't done anything to cause it...but it happened twice.
    I guess what I'm asking is, is there a method or a sequence for connecting a deck or camera to my system when working with external firewire drives? Are these issues with the hard drive manufacturer, my system, or my own error? Are there any major DO's and DONT's in this area and what am I doing wrong?

    So, from what I understand...supposing nothing external is connected to my machine...power down, plug in my firewire drive and the camera, then power up, then run FCP? At what point do I turn the camera on, while the computer is still off?
    I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand the BUS concept? As of now I'm using the rear fw400 port for a hard drive and the front for the camera.
    Why did the drive crash when I was in easy setup on FCP?

  • Kodo 3.1.5 - JBuilder X Integration Problem

    Hi,
    I am a newbie to both JBuilder X and Kodo, but I need to get a legacy application working with that environment (for maintenance purposes).
    My issue seems basic, but heck if I can figure it out. I am trying to configure Kodo to work with JBuilder. All I change in the Kodo 3.1.5 Configuration Utility is setting the "Connection Driver" to: "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver". When I try to save this, I get the following exception:
    WARN -- oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver

    So, it appears that it cannot find the Oracle class (oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver). The ojdbc14.jar is in both my "required libraries" and my "classpath" for the JBuilder Project.
    Anyone know what I am doing wrong here?
    Thanks, in advance.

    Yes, but it seems we did something wrong, fortunely, after defining the

    with a
    char column in the db, but the field is defined as char. Here is the error
    message :
    Caused by: kodo.jdbc.meta.MappingInfoNotFoundException: The "column"

    We are using Sybase adaptive Server 12.5. Any hint about this problem

    No, we didn't try that option, however since the error was restricyed to
    only one class, we converted the field to a String and everything worked
    just fine. Thanks for the hint, we'll try it.

  • "Creativity_E": LR/PS integration problem solved!

    After waiting for more than an hour on hold for Adobe tech support, I gave up and managed to resolve the problem myself. Since I found several other reports of the same problem online with  no solution, I decided to share mine:
    SYMPTOM:
    Lightroom 2 fails to discover Photoshop CS3, or integrate with it, even though CS3 10.0.1 patch is applied.
    Instead, Lightroom "Photo/Edit In" (Ctrl-E) links to "Creativity_E Application" - a program which does not exist.
    (Note: My experience was with LR2 and Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP SP2.)
    CAUSE:
    Epson "Smart Panel" (which ships with Epson scanners) contains an applet "Scan to Photoshop" which confuses Lightroom 2 and causes this erroroneous behaviour (probably a misleading registry entry).
    THE FIX:
    A scan of the registry revealed the culprit, but simply deleting the obvious registry entry (the one containing the text string "Creativity_E") did not solve the problem. Since I use other functionality in Smart Panel (mainly the photocopy utility and Scan to OCR) I wanted to keep the panel but just lose the problem component. (The Scan-to-Photoshop applet is unneeded since File/Import/Twain does the job perfectly well within Photoshop.)
    The problem is that Smart Panel is by default an all-or-nothing install/de-install. Here's how to remove just the problem applet:
    1) Deinstall Smart Panel completely, using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel
    2) Copy the contents of the "installers" directory from the Epson installation CD to a directory on your hard drive.
    3) In your copy, edit the file .../SPANEL/AMERICAN/APPINST.INI  using the text editor of your choice.
    4) Remove the section headed "[item 7] Photoshop" and then adjust the "count" and fix the item numbering so that the items are numbered sequentially, with no gaps, and the last one matches the count. If there are other applets you do not need, these can be removed in the same way. (In my case, I kept COPY and OCR only. Reducing my "count" to just 2)
    5) Save the file.
    6) Run the Smart Panel installation from your local copy: .../SPANEL/AMERICAN/SETUP.EXE
    7) VOILA! Smart Panel works and does only what you need it to do -- and Lightroom is properly integrated with Photoshop.
    THERE IS NO NEED TO REINSTALL LIGHTROOM 2 - LR2 creates the link to Photoshop dynamically.
    Hope this helps someone else!

    Malebron, thanks very much for your well detailed solution to this problem ...
    you probably saved me a few hours of trouble!!

  • Lightroom and CS4 photomerge integration problem

    I've tried using the photomerge integration feature from lightroom 2.0 but seem unable to get it to work when the files to be merged do not reside on the main hard drive.
    Lightroom seems to pass the information to CS4 correctly as I get the initial photomerge dialog in CS4 with the correct list of files. When I click 'OK' nothing happens.
    I've done some experimenting and when the files to be merged are located on the main hard drive, it works fine.
    I don't know if it makes a difference but the files are Canon RAW files.
    Has anyone else seen this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix it aside from moving the files?

    This thread in the Camera Raw Forum may help:
