Recycle Dead Keyboard?

Now that I think my keyboard is dead the question is what do you do with one? Is it recyclable, just trash, or is there some place that reconditions them for charity or something?

Look into [http://www.freecycle.org], since somewhere, somebody will want it.
Reuse comes before recycling.
If nobody wants it, then look into recycling it at a specialized computer recycling facility.

  • Monitor Dead - Keyboard shortcuts to Share Files

    Hello,
I'm a new member to the forums, but I have had my Ibook for almost 4 years now. 3 days ago the screen began flickering and finally is completely dead. I tried using an external monitor but that doesn't work either. I have a small network at home and I'd like to get my files off of the Ibook before taking it in for repairs but I didn't have the "Window Sharing" option turned on in System Prefferences. Does anyone know if there are keyboard shortcuts I could enter (since I can't see the screen) to get to system prefferences, select "sharing" and turn on the Windows file sharing or the remote login options?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Aside:
I knew for a while that older Ibooks had these problems but mine performed well for the longest time. I guess it's just it's time to die, although 4 years seems awefully short to me. I only took it on trips, outside of the office very infrequently. (My old compaq laptop from 1996 still works well!)

If you have access to another Mac with FireWire, you may be able to get the iBook to remain responsive in FireWire Target Disk Mode long enough to retrieve your data by this method:
If the iBook is on, shut it down and wait 30 seconds (or longer). Pick it up in your left palm to the left of the trackpad and squeeze the case there between your palm and left thumb as you push the power button and key combination to start up in FireWire Target Disk Mode. Do not let up the pressure on the case. Continue applying this pressure as you save your data to the other Mac. If you let up and the iBook dies or freezes, you will have to start over, allowing it to rest several hours or overnight before beginning again.
It took me three days of starts and stops to get my backup before sending my iBook in for its first logic board replacement.
    Good luck!
(Did you ever think that maybe the Compaq still works because you haven't used it as much as the iBook? I know I don't use a Windows computer as often as a Mac. I have my son's hand-me-down Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, and I've only turned it on about twice in nearly a year. In my opinion, NO Windows laptop "works well," no matter how "good" it is.)

  • Dead keyboard, need to reset

    Hi,
    I have a new Iphone 4S.
In the first 2 weeks I had to reset the phone three times.
Strangely, the keyboard freezes. the touchscreen functuions normally, it is just that in Message and in email or whenever i use an application that brings up the keyboard, that the keyboard is dead, accepts no input.
I have to switch off the phone completely and restart, then all is fine.
Interestingly, emails that I had deleted just before the rfreeze reappear as well.
    Anyone had this experience?
    IPhone 4 S
    64 GB
    OS 5.0.1

Maybe not, but if it were me I would have it checked since it's still under warranty.  If you want to try to troubleshoot it, the general steps are to reset, restore, restore as new.  BTW, you said you have reset it but in your original post you said you restarted it to fix the problem.  If you haven't tried resetting it you should definitely try that first (hold the on/off and home buttons for 10-20 seconds until you see the Apple logo and release).

  • Dead keyboard keys

The e, s, and z keys on my touch screen keyboard are dead when using applications that only offer the portrait keyboard option. When I switch to landscape in Safari, all the keys work.
Is this a common problem? Does it have a solution?
Thank for any help you can provide!

I took my iPhone to the Genius Bar today and they gave me a new one. He typed a couple things in the computer then told me they were going to just replace it. He then erased/reset my old phone and took the SIM card out for the new phone. Sent me on my way, a happy camper. All I had to do was restore from my backup when I got home and sync.
Anyone having this problem, just make an appointment and take it in because there's apparently not a fix for it. Just be sure to backup and sync before taking your phone in.

  • Dead keyboard and track pad

A few drops off water (only splashed drops) and my keyboard and trackpad (except for the power bottom and back light) went dead. Anything I can do except sending it to a repair shop? Its a MacBook Air A1466

If the MBA did not shut down on its own and you are very mechanically inclined, you MIGHT have success by taking it apart and cleaning it thoroughly with non-residue electrical cleaner.  Not an easy task for most people.  The repair facility is probably your best option.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro Late 2011 13.3 inch i7 keyboard and trackpad not working bluetooth showing a cross sign and no usb mouse is detected. Almost dead keyboard and mouse. Earlier same problem used to be solved by opening the lower cover and closing it.

My macbook pro 13.3 inch i7 late 2011 edition has previously encountered unresponsive trackpad and keyboard. To solve that, I used to open the back cover and then close it. It has been working fine since that. Yesterday, same thing happened, this time I noticed that bluetooth icon is showing a cross sign across it and keyboard and trackpad were unesponsive. After some time , everything worked fine and bluetooth sign was back to normal. Then , suddenly it went back to the problem. I shut it down by holding the power button. When I booted it again, I could not login because keyboard and trackpad were not working. I attached a HP mouse it didnt work. I opened the back cover disconnected the battery and then connected it again, didnt worked. Since then , I have tried many things and nothing has solved the problem.

    @sanjampet
As you suggested I reset the smc, in the first boot nothing worked. In the second boot, it all worked like a charm. I thought that my problem is resolved now. To test it, I shut it down properly. Next morning, I powered it on, all things i.e, keyboard, trackpad, bluetooth etc. worked and I thought that problem has been solved. When I was just going to visit apple forum to reply you,  the same problem reappeared. A sawtooth cross over bluetooth icon, keyboard not working, trackpad not working,no usb mouse working which worked well when it was fine. I reset smc so many times again and again but same problem continued. Isn't it a problem of the firmware?
Next time when it will work, I will update its firmware.
My macbook was bought in dec2011 so no warranty now.

  • 2006 Mac Book Pro 17" dead keyboard trackpad

I was really unhappy that my barely used MBP 17" keyboard and track pad died last week, had no doubt Apple would say new logic board for $1200. Or some expensive, half the cost of the machine repair after so little use.
Instead the Genius in Pasadena listened and understood that the machine was in virtually new condition and nothing I did caused the failure and even noted that I obviously took incredible care of it.
So the deal was they send it out for repair and I pay a flat rate which was very low, no mater what they find wrong - this has absolutely reformed my opinion of Apple after having a variety of problems with or Mac Pro's and ordering a new MBP 17". Previous experience was impersonal, "it must your fault" expensive repairs and the only response was "shoulda bought Apple Care".
Now they clearly have a more understanding, effective policy and are being fair about common failures on early models, that are premature or clearly not the users fault.
I was going to cancel my MBP 17" order but I am glad to keep it now - but I think I will buy Apple Care this time.
Does anyone know if Apple Care covers the logic board replacement? Thats what has gone bad for us a few times and I called to ask Apple but the rep was not sure. I can't understand why I hear people say Apple Care doesn't cover all repairs - according to the agreement it does if not from abuse.
Just want to be sure before I add it.
    Sorry the long post!

Apple answered for me, is covered.

  • Dead Keyboard???

I have two BB 8330 Curves, the first one worked fine up unitl a couple of weeks ago, the keyboard started bringing up random letters and numbers, so I removed the battery and let it reset... after that it rebooted and came back on and now the only key that works is the power button to turn it on, once the screen goes off it won't come back on unless you plug the power in or the usb... so I was eligible for an upgrade so I just went and got a new one ... about 5 weeks later it does the exact same thing... it's past the 30 day warranty and NO insurance... I've done a hard wipe of both phones and have completely cleaned them off. The only thing on either phone is the opperating system and the problem persists... anyone have any ideas??? Help me please!!!

It sounds like what I have seen multiple times on a device with moisture damage.
Even sitting on a bathroom counter during a hot steamy shower or bath can cause keyboard and trackball problems UNTIL properly dried out.
It really is more common than you think.
    1. Remove the battery immediately!! Do not attempt to turn on your BlackBerry.
    2. Let the device dry in a warm, dry place for 3 to 5 days* (see below)
    3. DO NOT "check it each day" by placing the battery in. Leave it be to dry completely. This takes time. Replacing the battery to check it can only damage it more (moisture + electrical current = disaster).
    3. If the device is warm after the drying period, allow it to cool to room temperature before placing the battery back in.
*Suggestions on drying your BlackBerry in a warm place (open, with the battery out):
Place the BB in a container of dry UNcooked rice, and then you might also place it in any of the locations mentioned below.
On top of any dry heat emitting electronic component: TV cabinet or CRT, LCD, cable TV/Satellite converter box or plasma monitor
On the dashboard of your car on a sunny day

  • G4 Graphite - Dead Keyboard (one row)

I know this is going to sound odd, but my wife's computer (a G4 graphite tower) is having some really odd keyboard problems. The whole of one row (Q-P) is not responding. You end up pressing them for ages and suddenly one or two letters appear.
Is this an easy fix, or do I just need to get a new keyboard for her for Xmas?
    Thanks all!!

    Hi, Agent -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
There is no easy repair - you'd first need to open up the keyboard to find out what the problem is (dirt; moisture; something with the wafer switch array; something else), which is itself no easy task. Here's one set of instructions on doing that -
Disassembly of an Apple Pro Keyboard
You'd probably be better off replacing it. You need not use an Apple keyboard; there are many manufacturers of Mac-usable keyboards - Macally; Kensington; others. Make sure, though, that the keyboard is compatable with Mac startup commands; the Macally keyboards are.

  • Keyboard and trackpad dead.

A couple of days ago, my keyboard and trackpad both freezed at the same time.
After shutting it down and restarting it some hours later, both where still not working.
Than after several shutdowns and restarts, I managed to do a PRAM zap. After that the keyboard and the trackpad came back just to stop working again after two hours.
After that, I never managed to turn them on again. PRAM zapping does not work with a dead keyboard - and even with the help of an external keyboard clearing the PRAM did not help.
Now I'm using my MacBook with an external keyboard and mouse.
Is this a hardware failure or is there any chance to bring my internal keyboard back without having the Mac repaired?

The problem has been solved - the hard way.
In fact this is a design problem with MacbookPros. The ribbon cable that you see when you take out the battery is subject to damages from, well, the battery.
Everytime you put your MacBook Pro into a bag, change the battery, or otherwise put pressure on this feeble cable, it gets weakend and finally breaks inside.
So either you got to get it repaired on warranty or - if warranty is gone, have it repaired for 250,-€ At least this was the price they gave me in a German Apple Sales Point.
So what I did was buying a used top case through ebay for about $30 and changed it myself. Keyboard and trackpad work again and to prevend another breakage, I reinforced the ribbon cable with tape.
I'd like to mention that I found zero comments from Apple on this issue.

  • Keyboard and trackpad freeze and randomly become unresponsive

    I've got a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011) running Mac OS X 10.8.2.
Since a few weeks ago at random intervals my keyboard and trackpad become permanently unresponsive. I don't recall any particular cause or change that would have caused this to start happening.
What happens is that the trackpad and keyboard will stop functioning completely. The computer, display etc. would continue to function properly:
    The clock keeps ticking.
If music were playing it would continue etc.
Internet connectivity (via an ethernet cable or WiFi) continues to work as well (a download will continue, and even resume if I disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable).
Presssing the power button will bring up the shutdown dialog as usual (but I can't use it, obviously, so a forced shutdown needs to be performed instead by holding down the power button longer).
.. but the keyboard and trackpad are rendered inoperable, as if they were no longer connected.
I've made no progress in finding out what could possibly be the cause of this. A few observations:
It has never happened while not using the keyboard (e.g. watch a DVD with TV series for a few hours, and afterwards the keyboard would always be fine).
It always happens while actively typing (e.g. while in the middle of replying to an e-mail).
It is not a temporary problem, the keyboard and trackpad will not become responsive again after some time (the computer isn't particulary occupied with calculating something big, no beachball and no busy mechanical noises).
It does not happen progessively. It works fine and snappy one second, and I'm touching a dead keyboard a split second later.
I tried connecting a USB keyboard but that doesn't seem to work either (I'm mentioning this since some of the linked threads below close with that as a solution).
Possibly related (although I haven't found anything in these threads):
Keyboard causes trackpad to not function properly
    Keyboard and trackpack freeze
    Keyboard and Trackpad Unresponsive
MacBook Pro Keyboard & TrackPad freeze! Totally Unresponsive!
MacBook Pro inbuilt Keyboard and Trackpad freeze when not connected to bluetooth devices?
I've crawled through some log files in /var/log (via the shell and through Console.app) and found a couple things that may be relevant, although they seem unrelated. Etiher way, I was surprised by what I found. All sorts of errors with regards to Bluetooth and USB stuff. I'm not aware of using either. I haven't used bluetooth in years and though I sometimes charge an iPod by USB, I haven't had any problems with that, and this keyboard/trackpad freeze has also happened on sessions where I started the laptop and never even touch the USB ports in the time leading up to the freeze.

  • Mains power cut to house - iMac now DEAD

Today I turned off the mains power to change a light bulb in a room that has given me some problems with sparking in the past.  Unbeknown to me, my son was using my iMac... (no, I failed to check properly, now I am suffering, believe me..).  After I switched the power on, my son exclaimed "Well, now the computer won't turn on!"  We have a surge protector which would have been on and working, but as the computer - a 17" intel duo core iMac purchased new in mid 2006 is old, and the surge protector is the same age, I am sick with worry wondering what it could be, and there are no repair shops near us open tomorrow, or even in our town!  I have to wait a week, and travel 100kms to the apple service specialists.... This computer is home to all our music (massive amounts my son has on there) and my photos - thousands, a serious hobby.  As well the computer runs Final Cut Pro Studio software, as we do a bit of video editing.  I have backed up no files, always meant to get around to it.....  As the computer is older, the main thing that devastates me at this point is my photos - a life history really, and thousands of hours too, photoshopping, etc.....  I have tried to computer in different power outlets, tried turning on, off, unplugging, all I can find recommended on these kind of sites - but to no avail.  The screen is black, and not a sound can be heard.  Completely dead.  Not one sign of life in the 8 hours since.....  I have been reading about PRAM batteries... this computer has had a massive amount of use, daily and in the house of serious creative insomniacs - for six years now, so almost daily serious use, and as yet just two dead keyboards, no other problems.... I got some extra RAM when it was purchased.  But recently it has not liked shutting down (it hasn't) so it has been pretty much permanently on, with the screensaver up,..... could this suggest a dying PRAM battery?  experts please, this internet reading has done my head in, now I have to wait a week!!!!! to know if our photos and music can be recovered.... if not the computer itself revived....?
Thank you for any help.  I know, I am SUCH an idiot for not checking all electronic devices were off, but as we know, this MAC hasn't been turning off recently...

Here is what Apple says to do with an iMac that won't start, it's from the owner's manual.
If your iMac won’t turn on or start up   Make sure the power cord is plugged into your iMac and a functioning power outlet.
Restart your computer while holding down the Command (x) and R keys, until the computer restarts. When the Mac OS X Utilities pane appears, select an option to repair your disk, restore your software, or reinstall Mac OS X and Apple applications. For more information, see “Repairing, Restoring, or Reinstalling Mac OS X Software” on page 44.
42 Chapter 4 Problem, Meet Solution
Press the power button (®) and immediately hold down the Command (x), Option, P, and R keys until you hear the startup sound a second time. This resets the parameter RAM (PRAM).
If you recently installed memory, and your iMac sounds tones every five seconds, make sure that the memory is correctly installed and that it is compatible with your iMac. Check whether removing the memory you installed allows your iMac to start up (see page 38).
Unplug the power cord and wait at least 30 seconds. Plug the power cord in again and press the power button (®) to start up your iMac.
If you still can’t start up your iMac, see “Learning More, Service, and Support” on page 54 for information about contacting Apple for service.

  • Pismo Keyboard Issues

on my Pismo powerbook, the keyboard seems to not work, except for a select few keys (the brightness, and volume keys) nothing else works anymore. The caps lock light does not light but the light next to the num lock is always lit. I have reset the PMU, but cannot reset the PRAM. I have hooked up an extra USB Keyboard to it, and it works fine. Does this sound like a dead keyboard in need of replacement to anyone or any suggestions about this? OS X 10.4.2

did that last night. No luck. I am currently trying another "clean" install of OSX reformatting the drive to see if that may help...ran disk utilities and there were a lot of permission issues. Another problem that confuses me is the only cd I can start from is OSX 10.4 no other cd (drive 10, OS 9 install, Techtool pro, diskwarrior) will start the computer. To start with 10.4 I had to unplug the hard drive, allow the computer to boot the cd, select startup disk, and plug hard drive in in the short time when the power is down for the restart. There was no other way I could even get the cd to run. I've tried removing the top ram chip thinking there may be a conflict with that but to no avail. Reset the PMU, unplugged the BIOS battery, removed the modem (thinking conflict there) the firmware listed in profiler is the current version, so no problems there. when starting up, the internal keyboard is resonsive because I can start in verbose or single user mode. I also tried a "safe" startup by holding down the shift key. Is there anything else you can think of?

  • Replacing keyboard keys

Am I able to go to an Apple store and have a few keyboard keys replaced? A few of them have become sticky due to a minor liquid spill, (after clean-up) but are still fully functioning.

Not likely. Stores don't usually stock keycaps, and I don't believe Apple supplies them individually. Your best bet is to find someone who has a dead keyboard to get them from.
But stepping back to the actual problem: it's very unlikely that any liquid has remained on your own keycaps if you've given them a good wash, so it's equally unlikely that replacing them will remedy whatever is causing them to stick. The problem is almost certainly below them.

  • APPLE FIX THIS! Aluminum Keyboard + Mac Mini = DYSFUNCTIONAL

I have a Mac Mini 1,1 (1.6ghz CD) and found out the hard way that the EFI firmware DOES NOT support the new Apple aluminum keyboard properly during post startup. You simply cannot use ANY startup modifier keys (cmd-c, option, a-o-p-r etc.) because the EFI firmware doesn't recognize the keyboard until the OS driver loads.
I found this out with a bunk boot camp install which left me with the famous 'no bootable device --' error and was unable use the option key to get to the boot selection screen to return to Mac OS. I called Apple and they were clueless and suggested I take the computer in for service.
After about 50 restarts, and 2 other (and newer) aluminum keyboards, I though i'd try a PC USB keyboard for fun.. and long behold the bloody thing worked and I was able to restart and access the boot screen etc.
I eventually found some mention of this on google where people who also have this problem are recommended to restart the computer while holding the remote's MENU button to get to the boot selection screen.
My question is WHY HAS APPLE NOT PATCHED THE MINI OR AI KEYBOARD'S FIRMWARE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?
I'm also willing to be most people who buy a Mac Mini probably also pick up the Aluminum keyboard which means there are newbies and long time users who probably don't even know their computers or keyboards are gimped until it's too late.

    OK, I'll bite!
    Firstly, welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Secondly:
    no PS2 socket!
Which is hardly a surprise really, since PS2 keyboards have been a dead dog ever since USB arrived, and it would be a difficult proposition to find any new system that had a connector for either PS2 keyboard or mouse these days. There are some legacy technologies which are worth continuing to support, but that isn't one of them.
    Thirdly:
now I have to go buy a **ing keyboard just because I updated the firmware.
I suspect there's more to it than that. Having updated firmware on a series of systems, and monitored reports from lots of users, your problem is not at all common, and therefore suggests there may have been a problem existing on your system prior to the firmware update which the update merely served to trigger. If so, then you would likely have faced the problem sooner or later.
It isn't clear from your description exactly what is happening with your system. You report hat you connected a USB mouse but it didn't appear to work, but subsequent to that it isn't clear what you mean by a 'hard reset' or whether the mouse worked after that. Obviously with a dead keyboard (presumably bluetooth, though you don't say) you can't log in, but if the USB mouse now works, then there is reason to expect a USB keyboard will get you into the system and then allow a little more troubleshooting and problem solving.
What is clear is your frustration at the system and the USB issues you have had with it, though you don't really explain what those issues are either. However, given that many people have Macs that wake up from sleep and have functional USB mice and external drives (which is what I assume you mean yours does not) then there's clearly something wrong with your system - or the components you have connected to it.
It would help to know what you do have connected to the mini, and whether you have USB hubs etc also. Many wake from sleep issues are the result of devices which are not entirely standards compliant, drawn too much current, or hubs which for one reason or another are not fully compatible. Of course they can also be because the computer is faulty!
Have you always had these problems with this system? If so, I can understand the frustration. If not, at what point did these issues start, and what was the last item before that which you added to the system?
Troubleshooting USB issues is often down to disconnecting everything and then trying one component at a time until you discover the one that seems to generate issues. Before you start that however, it would be a good idea to perform reset on your system - you describe it as a 1.7G model, though the nearest actual product to that is a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo. If that's it, then what you need is an SMC reset (the SMC is he system management controller which looks after the functioning of ports etc). To reset it:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, *making sure the power button is not being pressed* at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
Following that, test USB components one by one and see if you can pin-point the culprit that way.
