Redefining style

When trying to follow the Apple instructions to redefine a style I get to this instruction.
In the Styles drawer, click the red arrow next to the style name and choose Redefine Style from Selection from the pop-up menu.
However the Redefine Style option is greyed out. Any ideas?
Here are the full instructions
Modify an existing style
Select text that uses the style you want to modify.
Format the text the way you want the modified style to look.
In the Styles drawer, click the red arrow next to the style name and choose Redefine Style from Selection from the pop-up menu.

For example, I want to set base line shift in a paragraph style called "Body Text" to -1.
var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
var myParStyle = myDoc.paragraphStyles.item("Body Text");
myParStyle.baselineShift = -1;

  • Adobe Fireworks CS6 'redefine' style isn't working properly

    Hi there.
    I'm having an issue.
    So I'm creating some graphics.
    I have Three Objects.
I've created each object, then saved a style for those objects, saving everything but 'text' styling.
I made some adjustments to the linear gradient of 2 of these objects, but when I click 'redefine' style, the fill just sets itself to 'no-fill'.
    Really annoying.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Suggest you post in the Fireworks forum where the Fireworks experts hang out.

  • Do there is any way to redefine styles by find and replace or script

I have a some styles and i want  to change same things in all styles like language, align and numbers digit and etc....,
So I ask if  there is an easy way  to do that except modify each style manual, like script?, I use inDesgin CS3, and CS4
Like in Find Font there is option to redefine styles but that for fonts only, So there is way to do that by find and replace ?
    Thanks

I'm not a "scripter" and I don't have a huge knowledge of what scripts are available, unlike some on here, but this is how I'd do it if I couldn't find what I wanted by googling.

  • Redefining styles in another way

A friend of mine just asked me a very interesting question. If you had some text that you manually styled (ie not a style yet), and you had Heading 1 in your styles palette already, can you select the new manually styled text and say that it is NOW Heading 1 with the new attributes? Meaning Heading 1's style gets replaced with whatever the style of my manually styled text is.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    We're both using InDesign CS4.

Basically, everyone is making multi-step suggestions that could be, as lilia observes, reproduced in a one-click script. There is no one-step way to achieve what you're asking about in InDesign.
(I run through one of these multi-step style redefinitions hundreds of times a day, but I do it fast enough on the keyboard alone that wrapping these steps up into a scripe would not get me any advantage in terms of speed. Any benefit from wrapping these steps up into a script would be eaten up by the step "remove hands from keyboard, grope for mouse, open Script panel, click on script.")

  • CS3 Find Font/Delete Paragraph Style/Redefine Paragraph Style Causes Crash

I am running into a very frustrating issue where I cannot replace a paragraph style. The issue is that we used to use some adobe type fonts and want to move to the true type equivalent so that we don't have problems working on files between mac and pc. The problem occurs on both mac and pc on a variety of hardware (both c86 and ppc macs for example). When we open the document it identifies that the font cannot be found (example Palatino T1). When we click find font and select the regular ttf Palatino replacement and click Change All Indesign just vanishes and leaves a crash message with a ton of garbage and a read only memory error. The same happens if we change the font on some text and right click on aragraph style and click "redefine style" - there is a sudden crash.
Trying to work around this I went into our templates and tried to change it there. Opening the paragraph style and selecting the new font caused it to crash upon selecting OK. Also trying to Make a new paragraph style works, but then when deleting the old one causes a crash no matter what combination of mapping or not mapping the old paragraph style we chose (we tried every option under the dialogue and selected several different styles to map to or none at all).
This occurs on several different fonts and on several different templates. I have tried deleting the adobe font cache to no avail. Any help resolving this would be great - all our employees are going nuts over this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Peter, your latest post led me to an interesting revelation. When I change Palatino (t1) bold to Palatino Bold using Find/Change it is fine. When I change Palatino (t1) to any font using Find/Change there is a curious result! As soon as I click find first the page changes to the default template and all content is hidden. The 4 or 5 places where palatino occurs on the default template change fine, but then on the next click of FIND FIRST it crashes! So the problem is connected to "find first", not the actual change. My guess is this is an issue of with how the find/change jumps from the template to the individual page, but I'm not sure exactly what is happening.

  • PAGES: How change a Paragraph Style ?

    Hello all,
there is something that is driving me crazy...
using Pages for iPad is it possible to change the default settings of a Paragraph Style ?
I am not talking about importing a document with a custom set of styles but simply:
    - I open my document in Pages for iPad
    - I select a line of text and apply the "Header 1" style to it
    - I am not happy - for example - with the font size of the Header 1 style and I want to make all my Header 1 paragraphs change their font size
    - In the desktop version you would simply change/update the style you need, but on the iPad I cant find a way to change those values
(BTW, I seem to remember that I once managed to do this...)
    Thanks,

You seem to be able to copy and paste styles, but nowhere that I can find does it let you update the defined styles.
There is the manual which does not refer to any suitable method, and also some eBooks on the subject but I have scanned those and can find no reference to redefining styles either.
The more I play with Pages for iPad the more of a toy it seems. Sort of amazing that it does what it does on a mobile tablet, but when you get right down to it, not very useful.

  • How do you use the "copy style" clipboard and "paste style" glue bottle?

I just know that it will seem obvious when somebody tells me, but I'm having no luck finding out how to use these tools.  I keep thinking/hoping that they will work like a formatting paintbrush (in microsoft word or google docs) but that's not the case.  I get that you can redefine styles thorugh the paragraph, character and list styles pull out list or menu.  But a formatting brush type tool would allow more flexibility.  thanks

Thats not really easy..  maybe you find some informatione here: https://dev.twitter.com/discussions/11386

  • Framemaker 8 problem with paragraph styles

    Hi,
I manage a documentation (one file) including paragraph styles organized like that :
    -- Chapter
         |--- Sub chapter
           |--- Sub Sub chapter
    My question is simple
When a create a PDF file from my document, including bookmarks, I'm encountering the following problem :
The "chapter 4", "sub chapter 4" and "sub sub chapter 4" paragraphs are created correctly. The bookmarks are created with the correct place.
    Like that :
    |---- chapter 4
      |---- sub chapter 4
       |----- sub sub chapter 4
    BUT
The "sub sub chapter "5 paragraph styles are created into the "Chapter 4" structure, added with the "sub sub chapter" of Chapter 4. And the Chapter 5 just contains the "chapter 5" and "sub chapter 5" bookmarks.
    Like that :
    Chapter 4
        |---- sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 5
    Chapter 5
       |--- sub chapter 5
After checking the structure of my document, I do not find any thing which could create this problem.
The paragraph styles seems to be correct.
Thank you so so much to help me because I don't know how to replace the "sub sub chapter 5" below the" sub chapter 5".
    Phil ;o)

There are a few ways to go with this. One is to put all the files in a Book,
temporarily, and set the one with the correct style definition as the
source, then synchronize the paragraph styles. This will change ALL styles
with the same names throughout all the documents, and add any styles that
are present in the source, but not in one of the other files, so it is a bit
risky, especially if any styles are based on or [Basic
Paragraph] itself is used in one of the files and it isn't already defined
exactly the same in all files.
You can also open any file and go to the Paragraph Styles panel menu and
choose Load Styles, then select the style you want to load, and how to
handle a conflict (Use Incoming), which will give you more control over what
    happens.
Or each time you open a file and get the missing font warning you can go to
Find Font and select the missing font, then pcik your substitute, check the
redefine styles box, and click Change All. This would probably be the best
choice since it doesn't depend on style names to make the correct changes.

  • Applying a style doesn't change font

I have copied and pasted some text from another program. When I try to apply the Body Style to it all the original fonts are retained (size, font name, color). How do I change everything to match the style I want? Is there a way to remove all formatting? (Plain text?)

    Hi Pamela
When you paste the text you can choose to *Paste and Match Style* on the Edit menu.
Or you can make sure all formatting is removed from imported text by pasting into TextEdit (set to plain text) first, then copying and pasting from there.
Another way is to apply another style to the text and then reapply the body style, but I would check that in fact your Body style actually has different styling. To set the style (including for Body text) you need to select a piece of text that has what you want and go *Redefine Style from Selection* in the *Styles Drawer.*
Pages lacks any other methods to remove all styling. There is a None for Character and List styles but all that does is keep the paragraph style settings.

  • Make paragraph style not override character style?

    Hi.
Is there any way to make a paragraph style NOT override a character style?
For example, I write a lot of scientific reports in Pages and then I use subscript and superscript often and so I have made a character style for that. But if I want to perhaps change the spacing between paragraphs in my body style. I select a paragraph, change the settings that I want and then I right click on the paragraph style and choose "redefine style from selection". Then I select all of that style and choose "revert to defined style" to get the updated paragraph spacing. But what this does is that it overrides all of the character styles so that everything in sub/superscript, bold, italic etc get back to the style. This is really bugging me out.
For the character styles you can select what attributes you want them to affect, is there any way to do this with paragraph styles as well? Or maybe some of you have got a good way to make it work.
    Thanks in advance.

When you redefine the paragraph style, all paragraphs using that style will display the new style properties, unless you've overriden them. Presumably this is why you choose "revert to defined style", so that other paragraphs that you've stylistically modified take on the proper paragraph style properties. If not, why revert at all?
Instead of using revert, why not re-apply the paragraph style (just click on the selected style in the drawer, or pick the selected item from the pop-up menu). It will discard your unwanted paragraph style overrides, and preserve the character styles.

  • Following Paragraph Style - a bug?

I have a list style that is currently active. I am on that list style now and over in the More section of the Text pane in the inspector, I choose a paragraph style as the "Following Paragraph Style". However when I hit return (to start a new paragraph) from the list style, the menu selection in the Following Paragraph Style changes to "same" (which results in the corresponding effect in the following paragraph, i.e. I end up having the characteristic of the list style I had before I hit return.
I am assuming this is a bug?
    Thanks,
    Kenneth

I still don't quite understand what you're trying to do, but it might help to understand how following style works. It's not very useful except when used in a defined style. In your example, I think when you hit return, the new paragraph took on the following style you'd set. That style, though, had its following style set to Same, which is why the pop-up changed back.
Try this in a new document:
    Show the styles drawer.
Apply the paragraph style "Body Bullet"
In the text inspector, change the following style to "Title"
Click on the red triangle next to "Body Bullet" in the styles drawer.
    Select "Redefine Style from Selection"
Type some text and press return, type more text.
The paragraph which follows the body-bullet style has the style you set as the following style, "Title."
    Press return again, more text.
The next paragraph has the style "Body," the following style of "Title".
Something which might be more useful would be to set Body Bullet's following style to Body. Then you could apply Body Bullet, and get a bulleted paragraph. As you are typing, each subsequent paragraph would be Body until you applied Body Bullet again.

  • TOC Paragraph Style will not update!

Ok, this one is getting wearing. I have put a TOC into my thesis and successfully reformatted TOC 1 to be Tiered Numbered (Tier 1).
However, when i try to reformat TOC 2 to Tiered Number (Tier 2) it does it but it will not stay permanent (And i dont always get the option to Redefine Style from Selection, it seems like it does when it wants to). If i do the reformat of the paragraph style to Tiered Number (Tier 2), then save, then close & reopen, TOC 2 is back to Tier 1 not Tier 2 again. Same if i make the change then deselect the use of TOC 2 and reselect, it returns to Tier 1. Very irritating. Anyone any ideas?
Its not very easy to explain so feel free to ask questions, i will do my best to answer them.
    Cheers
    Rowan

I never faced this behavior but I know that the TOC style Headings are predefined.
Maybe it would be safer to create new ones, not redefine the original ones.

  • How can I edit a character style?

    Hi:
let's see.... I created some character styles but i don't know how to delete or edit. Somebody help me please?
    Sorry my grammar
    Regards from Lima, Perú

Select the style in the panel, then either double click ther style name, right click and choose Edit Style, or open the panel menu and choose Style Options to edit, or reformat some text using the style to be thway you want it and either right click the style or open the panel menu and choose Redefine style.
To delete a style you can drag it to the trash icon or use the panel menu. If it's in use you'll be asked to choose a replacement.
