Refresh problems on Mac OS

I have a JPanel that contains several JLabels. I've attached a mouse listener and overridden the paint method for this panel to create a drag rectangle that is drawn based on the position of the mouse.
When this application runs on my windows machine, it runs quite well, and there is no flickering at all. Recently, I've ported my application to a Mac and this frame has some serrious flickering problems. Everytime the mouse moves, all of the JLabels flicker.
Here is my overridden paint method:
public void paint(Graphics g){
super.paint(g);
Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)g;
g2d.draw(new Rectangle2D.Double(xpos,ypos, width,height));
Does anyone have any suggestions how to stop the JLabels from flickering on a Mac? It's almost like the Mac isn't doublebuffering the JLabels.
The only Idea I have is to save the rendered background of the JPanel into an image before I start drawing the drag square, then evertime I refresh the dragsquare, draw this image rather than calling super.paint(g). This hasn't worked because I can't figure out how to load the rendered JPanel into an image.
I'd really appreciate any ideas anyone has.

Actually OS/X is based on a BSD variety of unix and should be pretty close to the Linux examples.
The problem you mentioned doesn't seem to have anything to do with Mac.
It seems that the problem is that you're using a JDK1.5 compiler on 1.4 source code. My guess is that the book is a little old. Those warnings are basically telling you that you're not using the Generics stuff from JDK1.5. You can use the "-source 1.4" option to javac to make them go away for now. Or you can find a newer textbook that also covers generics.
By the way, it's kind of a bad thing to put your own source code in the main JDK directory. If the book is telling you to do that, ignore it. Create a directory for your own code and don't mix it up with standard distribution stuff.
