Regex: named group capturing?

Hi, I know that in JAVA regular expression "capturing groups are numbered by counting their opening parentheses from left to right", but is there anyway to assign a name to a capturing group, like the way in python:
(?P<year>[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]) //see regular expression Howto website
where this group is named "year" and and be retrieved by the group name.
Can I do this in JAVA regex? Any hints please, thanks!

I made some changes to sun's regExps to support named groups.

  • Regex Matching on Capture groups

    I have this regular expression:
    (throw|give)(?: ([1-3][A-B]))+
    given this input:
    throw 1A 2C 1B 3C
    How would I capture each of the items 1A 2C 1B and 3C?
    In the above expression I have 3 capture groups
    group0: whole expression
    group1: (throw|give)
    group2: ((?:1|2|3)(?:A|B|C))
    The problem is that when I execute the find() on my matcher it tries matching the whole expression at once! That means for the group 2 I always get the last match only:
    group0: throw 1A 2C 1B 3C
    group1: throw
    group2: 3C
    How do I get the matcher to only match on ONE capture group at a time?! Is it possible? I thought that was the purpose of the find() method. The documentation says find() matches on a "subsequence", yet I can only get it to match on the whole expression. Plus, I don't see where "subsequence" is defined in the documentation. What am I missing here?

    "Attempts to find the next subsequence of the input sequence that matches the pattern." (my emphasis)
    find() matches the whole regex, not components thereof. What you need to do is use one regex to match the whole expression and return a capture group with the digit-letter pairs, and then use another regex on that capture group to extract the pairs one at a time.*******************************************************************************

  • Regexp and group capturing

    Hi,
    I 've trouble with capturing group as mention in the example below
    String s = "KLASSE3";
    Pattern p = Pattern.compile("KLASSE(\\d)");

    System.out.println( m.groupCount());
    System.out.println( m.group(1));

  • Question on regex Matcher (group number)

    HI, everybody
    I am writing a program on replacement like the one below.
    String regex = "(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)(.)";
    String original = "ABCDEFGHIJKL";
    String replacement = "$12";
    Pattern p = Pattern.compile(regex);
    Matcher m = p.matcher(original);
    String result = m.replaceFirst(replacement);What I actually want is to take out the first group, in this case an "A", and append a character "2" after it.
    The result I am expecting is "A2". But the result I get is "L". For the regex engine takes it as the 12th group.
    What should I do to remove the ambiguity.
    Thanks.

    In such case, use $1\\2.

  • Regex multiple groups matching question

    Hi,
    I have three types of inputs: A,B,C
    I need to match sequences of:
    AAA...ABC
    If I truncate the input to contain only A's, and use a Matcher that searchs for A, I can read all A's instances with matcher's group methods.
    If I apply the whole sequence to the full regex, I can only read the last A (B and C too).
    How can I get the "subgroups" of A's?
    Do I need to split up the input and use two regex's? Is there a way to make the matcher assign a different group for each A, and one group for each B and C? So I can iterate over the groups?
    regex I use:
    (A)+?(B)(C) (reluctant modifier)
    Thanks

    A, B and C are not characters, they are expressions.
    I would like to be able to read all groups of A when I apply my regex to the whole sequence.
    Here is my code, in case it is needed. Some examples of valid inputs I need to read:
    5.0x + 10y = 20
    -2t1 +3.5t3 >= 0.5
    etc
    import java.util.regex.*;

                   int groups = m.groupCount();
                   for (int i = 0; i <= groups; ++i) {
                        System.out.println("Group " + i + ": " + m.group(i) +
                            " from: " + m.start(i) + " to " + m.end(i));
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              ModelParser mp = new ModelParser(" + 3.5y - 2.0x = 5");
              //ModelParser mp = new ModelParser(" + 3.5y - 2.0x");
    }You can use the commented lines (regex and input at the main method) instead and check that it is reading ok the "A" groups.

  • File naming after capturing video from a firewire camera

    Quicktime by default saves my files in a specified folder and names them movie1, movie2, movie3, etc... How can I use a name that is different for each video?. I do about 300 at a time and don't have much time between video captures. Is there anyway to save a quicktime file with the specified names first and the capture the video and have it keep that name?

    Free software: FileRenamer for mac. Renames files at about the rate of 2000 a second. Rename then afterwards in no time.

  • File naming-new capture

    Just upgraded to PP6 and have a bit of a problem.  When I do a new video capture from tape, PP will not let me name the file.  The process seems the same, but when I type in my new file name, I get an error message saying "cannot change file, keeping original name".  When I check my folder, the file is there with the name "untitled clip 01", ect.  I can rename the clip in the folder, but when working on a large project this gets to be a pain.  I figure this is a feature of some sort (auto save?), but can't figure it out.  Any help?

  • Font Book Named/Grouped Fonts Incorrectly

    I just switched my work computer from a PC to a Mac and have moved my fonts over. Unfortunately the font family that 90% of my work is done in is Gotham Condensed and it's not playing nicely with the Mac/FontBook.
    I've got four weights: Light, Book, Medium & Bold.
    When I installed these on my Mac, it organized them this way:
    Gotham Cond Light:
    Family - GothamCondensed
    Style - Medium
    Gotham Cond Book:
    Family - Gotham
    Style - Medium
    Gotham Cond Medium:
    Family - Gotham
    Style - Medium
    Gotham Cond Bold:
    Family - GothamCondensed
    Style - Medium
    I could probably ignore that they're in different families, but since they're all categorized as "Medium" in FontBook and my application's font menus, it's a hassle to try out each one and hope I get the correct weight.
    Does anyone know how I can fix this?

    Well... sorted it out partially...
    I found where the collections are stored under the user account, and when I clicked the folder, I had no access. For some reason after the collections were deleted, it set the folder to no access. I gave myself full read/write access againa nd now can add collections.
    Sadly, old collections are gone... may make a fake user and copy/paste the collections over. They were handy to have and well, can't recall all the names and fonts associated with each.

  • RegEx: find() and group() issue...

    Hi,
    In the code below, I use the find() method to search the first occurence of a match and then group(1) to retrieve that match if the find() method returns true.
    The problem is that the find() method returns true and the group(1) throws an ArrayOutOfBoundException :(
    Here is the RegEx code I use:
      String value = "${local.production}\\makeresults\\repository";
      Matcher matcher = Pattern.compile("\\$\\{.*\\}").matcher(value);
      if (matcher.find()) {
        System.out.println(matcher.group(1));   // throws an ArrayOutOfBoundException
    Got this output:

    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Best regards,
    Serge.

    You shall use group() without parameter to get complete sequence.
    Only capturing groups (between parenthesis) are indexed (from left to right, starting at one.)
    Here you don't have capturing group (and that's why it says No group 1), and it seems that you need the entire pattern, so you need the group() method.
    Matcher
    Tim - Actually, you can also use group(0) ...

  • Is there a way to load a tab group that I named and closed WITHOUT using "restore previous session", "recently closed tabs/windows" which doesn't restore it..

    grouped some tabs, named them and closed them; did some activity afterwards; closed FF and restarted;
    tried options mentioned above, but they did not restore that tab group - seems to be already classified as "not belonging to previous session", or whatever;
    the name of the tab group can still be found in the sessionstore.js file tho;
    is there any way to search for named group tabs and load them?
    If not, pls implement that - otherwise the use of grouping tabs does not make sense to me, and I would not see any reason to use it;
    Please restore the "Bookmark all tabs" functionality in the bookmarks menu. Users need to know that this option is available, and should have easy access to the functionality of a software product to be able to use the options, not to have to turn to google every time to figure out if the browser that they are currently using is able to do this or that, and if yes how they can invoke the desired functionality.
    Thank you.

    did not have that extension installed, but did it now and can't find anything there that would concern tab groups. (also referred to as Panorama). This session manager seems to provide a lot of stuff that the browser is supposed to do anyhoo, but with more options of configuration. Hope extension and browser won't cause a mess while attempting to do both the same thing.
    Yes, I know that Bookmark all tabs is still available via right click - after a google-search told me so. My feedback was - why remove functionality from the menu? It's really not overloaded - and I'd expect a menu listing me the complete set of functions a software allows me to do, unless it busts the menu. So I was just asking myself - how come it has been removed? Makes no sense to me.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Using Regex to find a string

    Is it viable to use regular expressions with Search "Specific Tag" (i.e.script) "With Attribute" (i.e. src) and "=" a regex string rather than an exact search term?  The Find / Replace tool seems to prevent a simple wildcard find (i.e. "searchter* for searchterm) Any insight would be appreciated.

    uneAaron wrote:
    I'm trying to replace a script source value for all instances where the value contains the string "/bbcswebdav/xid-144702_1", where the string "xid-" is followed by a different numerical value in each instance.
    The regex for finding that string is:
    \/bbcswebdav\/xid\-[\d_]+
    The numerical value contains an underscore, so the final section ( [\d_]+ ) uses a range that selects one or more numbers and/or underscores.
    Perhaps as important as identifying what you want to find is specifying how you want to replace it. Regexes can have capturing groups that can be used in the Replace field to simplify matters.

  • Unable to capture images since upgrade to MDT 2013

    I recently updated MDT 2012 to MDT 2013 to enable support for Windows 8.1. Under MDT 2012 I was able to both capture and deploy images without an issue. Since upgrading to MDT 2013 I've had nothing but grief. When I launch my Sysprep and Capture task I am

    Additionally, ensure that the share itself is marked R/W access.
    As a test, boot to WinPE and try to create a file, any file on the share.
    However, Lordy86 may have the correct solution :^).

  • How do i send an e-mail to a pre set group of contacts?

    Hi
    Before Yosemite, I used to be able to compose a new message and then click and drag the group of contacts to the 'to' box...  Now I can't do this.. I have to open up the separate 'Contacts' app and drag the group from there.
    Is there a way I can do this directly from mail (v 8.2)
    thanks!
    Goldie

    Hi
    thanks for the fast reply!
    I tried this just now and it kind of works... in that it seems to list a number of variations of the named group... some of which have contacts in them, some not...
    for example... I have a group called "Nursery workers" and when I start typing this in, the drop box lists <nursery workers> - - nursery list - - nursery workers
    Only one of these has the contacts in it.  Is there any way of eliminating it bringing up a load of what seems to be empty lists?  I only have one group of nursery people.
