Registration Free COM

I have a C++ application which depends on a 3rd-Party COM library. I like to use this 3rd-Party-library, without registration with regasm. Therefore, I found this tutorial:
Tutorial
I use the approach descriped at: Using the Activation Context API
That means, I have created one manifest file (via mt.exe) placed it inside the application directory.
However, for unknown reason it is not possible to specify a different filename in the manifest of the 3rd-party-lib.
My app will only look for this specific DLL in some directories, that's it.
Here my Fusion Viewer output:
LOG: The binding starts in default-Load-Context.
LOG: It will be tried, to download app config file from file:///D:/projects/test_new/Release/x64/MyApp.config
LOG: The config file D:\projects\test_new\Release\x64\MyApp.config is not available.
LOG: No config file was found.
LOG: The computer config file from von C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\config\machine.config will be used.
LOG: Link to rule: my3rdpartylib, Version=5.3.12079.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9c65e32c060523a1, processorArchitecture=MSIL
LOG: The search in GAC was not successful.
LOG: Download from new URL file:///D:/projects/test_new/Release/x64/my3rdpartylib.DLL.
LOG: The Assembly-Download will be started. File-Setup will be started: D:\projects\test_new\Release\x64\my3rdpartylib.dll.
LOG: From source started Setup-Phase starts.
LOG: The Assemblyname is: My3rdPartyLib, Version=5.3.12079.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=9c65e32c060523a1.
LOG: The binding was successful. Assembly will be returned from D:\projects\test_new\Release\x64\my3rdpartylib.dll.
LOG: The Assembly will be loaded in default-Load-Context.
I translated this log output from german to english. I hope this helps to solve my issue.
Question:
1) How can I get my application to honor a custom filename specified in the manifest file of the 3rd-party-library?

=>"However, for unknown reason it is not possible to specify a different filename in the manifest of the 3rd-party-lib."
Read this may help you .

  • How to use registration-free COM with TestStand

We create several different test programs run by TestStand. The sequence typically calls a function in a .NET dll that in turn calls functions in COM objects. We would like to use registration free COM to isolate the programs from each other but I'm having difficulty making it work. I know that in principle the manifest file and COM objects could be put in the same directory as SeqEdit.exe but this is unacceptable. I was thinking that using the activation context might be a way to do it. For example in C#: ActivationContext.CreatePartialActivationContext(ApplicationIdentity, string[]). ApplicationIdentity is the application identity of SeqEdit and the string [] parameter contains paths and names of manifest files that describe the needed COM objects. The idea would be to load an activation context with the .NET dll called by the sequence so SeqEdit could find the COM dlls in the same directory as the sequence. I haven't gotten it to work yet. Any ideas?

    Russell1,
I'm going to try to give as thorough description as I can, since many other users may not understand what you're asking about.
Normally, a COM server (ActiveX servers are COM servers) is registered with Windows via the registry.  Unfortunately, you can only have one version of the server registered at a time.  This is one of the reasons why TestStand (which is a COM server) needs a version switcher to change between engine versions.
There is a technology called "Registration-free COM" that allows an application to use a COM server without having it registered in the windows registry.  It involves creating manifest files for the COM server and for the application that is calling the com server.  These manifest files are used by the operating system when the application tries to call the COM server to find the server.  Usually the OS would go to the registry, but it will check the manifest files first.
The best reference on registration-free COM is an article on MSDN: Registration-Free Activation of COM Components: A Walkthrough.
A year or so ago, there was a TestStand customer who was interested in forcing some of their applications to use a certain version of a COM server; I was able to get this working for them.
I tested the .NET and MFC TestStand user interfaces, and found that I could get registration-free COM working with both.  I found that two .manifest files needed to be created.
The first is a .manifest file for the COM server.  This was a straightforward process following exactly the instructions in the above walkthrough (Step 7).
The second is a .manifest file for the UI.  Since the TestStand UIs have their manifest files embedded in the application, I had to modify the .manifest file before building the UI, or use the .NET SDK tool mt.exe.
After creating both manifest files, I found that adding them was enough to make .NET calls to the COM server work correctly if the application and server were in the same directory.
Unfortunately, I did not do any testing with having the COM server in a different directory.
    Now, on to your question:
I just did some poking around on MSDN, and I have found the following information.
Note that after you have configured a .manifest file for your COM server, it is then referred to as an "assembly".  I am making an assumption here (but I think it's a reasonable assumption) that after this, the COM server can be used just like any other assembly.  Specifically, it will be searched for in the same way an assembly is searched for.
MSDN documents How the Runtime Locates Assemblies.  Note near the bottom of that page, if the assembly has not been bound to before, and it is not in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC), it will probe for the assembly.  From this I think the following are possible solutions.  Please note that I haven't tested any of them.
MSDN documents the Probing behavior.  Note that it will only probe in sub-folders of the current application root directory ([application base]).  Note that there is also some information at the bottom of the page about COM interop scenarios.  I think what it is saying is that if you already are in an assembly, and call a COM server, it will look in the same folder as that assembly for the COM server.  This might be a possible solution for you.
There is also an AssemblyResolve event that is fired if the CLR is unable to locate the assembly.  I don't know if this event is fired in the case that the COM server cannot be found, but if it is, you could then define your own way to search for the server.  I found this information in a blog post by Microsoft developer: https://blogs.msdn.com/junfeng/archive/2006/03/27/561775.aspx
One last possibility is to use an Application Configuration file; which is similar to a manifest file.  According to that page, there is an element called 'probing' that you can use with Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 when defining assembly binding to specify relative paths to probe for the assembly.
I honestly don't know if any of these possibilities will work.  Please let me know if you get it working or if you need some more help, and I'll do my best to assist you.

  • How many registration keys come with the new Final Cut Studio

Hi I'm thinking of buying the new final cut studio and am trying to find out how many registration keys come with the box. I have 2 others in the family that would use it on their comps as well, and my friend had gotten the previous version of final cut studio 2 (final cut pro 6) and said it came with 3 keys inside, which would be great for me. So I'm just making sure that's true. Thanks.
Also you can bring final cut pro 6 files from another computer onto a computer with final cut pro 7 and still work on them right?

    Hello Gibbs,
    Welcome to the forum.
    Re: your question.
Your friend is a pathological lier (or delusional - sometimes it's hard to tell the difference).
FCP is licensed for one laptop and one desktop as long as:
    1. Both machines are owned by YOU (your inlaws don't count as you)
    and
    2. They are not used at the same time.
If your family wants FCS, time for them to purchase their own copies. (Apple has dropped the price so low that even Junior High School students can afford their own copies now.)
Yes, FCP6 files will open without issue on FCP7. The reverse is not true.
    Have fun.

  • Why registration screen comes up every time my iPad syncs

i bough a ipad 2 reset my old ipad and registered the new one now every time my new ipad syncs the registration screen comes up

I have the same problem. I keep getting the iPad registration popping up in iTunes even though I have already done it. There must be some way to change a flag somewhere to stop this popping up.

  • The boot from Free-Com CD-ROM

I have the Free-Com CD-ROM drive with a PCMCIA card (PCcard). I want to boot from my repair CD. The boot process is OK. But the CD-drive letter was not assigned. Practically all DOS CD drivers can not found this CD.
So, where I can find the DOS drivers for the device?

    HI Mr Smith,
When you go to http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com - Support & Download - Driver Download you could find for your Portege 3410 (W98SE) a Companion Diskette.
This disk is also a boot disk and is responsible for detecting the external CD ROM!
Another suggestion is to go directly to freecom.de homepage and search for a driver or a boot disk!
    Bye Sammy

The HRESULT 8007007e can be associated to failure in loading some DLL.
You may want to check the dependencies of your component, for example using Dependency Walker (or Sysinternal ProcMon).

  • About "benefits of registration:" free downloads

    Hello,
After I've logged in to Adobe, I'm encouraged to try the benefits of registration listed here:  http://www.adobecs3.com/register/benefits/?lang=en, but the items are not active links.
I've checked to see if I AM registered properly and am advised that I am -- but can't seem to activate the downloads (which I'd like to use, especially the fonts).  Any assistance much appreciated!
    Thanks!

Note that you only get your choice of ONE of those "bonuses", not all of them.
Also, you get access to them as you originally register the product.  They will send you an email with a code so that you can redeem one of bonus prizes, not all of them—and there is absolutely no way to get them after the fact or through other channels.

  • Registration screen comes up blank in CS3 after four years.

Illustrator and Photoshop CS3 both start up with a blank register your product screen, and will not allow the programs to load. This happened after about four years of using the programs.

    johngalt,
This solution has just worked for me. As you said, not ideal but it works for now.
    Thank you so much.

    Critical Error
    Can't initialize JControl Administration
    -> Unknown error code (rc = 2)
From above I am getting the error is because of Shared memory. My system is of 4 GB & 40 GB of Virtual memory. This problem occurs after changing from WORKGROUP to DOMAIN. I have given all the rights of local administrator to <SID>adm & SAPService<SID> user.
Please help me to resolve this issue.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Shambo

  • Registration screen loops on 10.3.5 install

    Hello:
Here's a rather new one for me. I just acquired a B/W G3, 400mhz with 512mb of Ram. I tried like crazy to get Panther to install. With the help of Xpostfacto and a little luck I got Panther installed on the machine. Here's the issue I'm having......on boot the registration screen comes up, then I fill out the info, press continue, then the screen goes black, then the registration screen comes back up for me to fill out the info again, and again, and again, etc! It just loops and won't get to the next step. Normally I'd just wipe the HD and try to re-install but since I had such a rough go with it, I'd rather just try and figure out how to get past the point I'm at now. Any ideas?? Thanks.
    Brad.
    B/W G3 400mhz 512 Ram   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I know I don't need XPostFacto for this machine. However, I was getting nowhere without it. I'd get to the white boot screen, the spinner would spin and then freeze after about 20 seconds. With XPostFacto I got it to install, but now I can't get past the registration screen. I'll most likely just start completely over with a fresh battery, zap PRAM, reset CUDA, etc....unless anyone has any other suggestions.
    Thanks.

  • Using the same client for both regfree and out-of-proc COM

    Hi,
    Here is the context:
    1. We have the same set of COM objects that can be deployed as in-proc COM servers (dlls) or out-of-proc COM servers (exe).  In-proc servers are called through regfree COM.
    2. We have test projects that use the in-proc COM servers through regfree COM.
I would like to use the same test client projects for both regfree and out-of-proc COM servers (but not at the same time). For example, I would like to first run the client using regfree COM, then delete the in-proc dll and register the out-of-proc com server,
and then run the client again without having to recompile.  But I have not found a way to do this.
Instead, what I have to do is modify the project settings of the test client project, removing the regfree stuff (the manifest dependencies) before I can use the test client project with the out-of-proc server.
Is there a way to do this without recompiling?
FYI, I have tried regfree COM by changing the client project's Project->Properties->Linker->Manifest file->Additional Manifest Dependencies, or by changing the client project's Project->Properties->Manifest Tool->Input and Output->Additional
Manifest Files.  Either way works with regfree COM.  And either way I have to remove those settings before making it work with out-of-proc COM (and hence recompiling, which is what I am trying to avoid).
    Thanks,
    Nick

Try Manifest Tool > Input and Output > Embed Manifest = No, and change Linker > Manifest File > Manifest File to drop ".intermediate" in the middle (or just rename the file after the build).
A manifest doesn't have to be embedded into the executable, it could be a standalone file named like ApplicationName.exe.manifest and sitting in the same directory next to the .EXE. Then you can simply delete or rename it back and forth to switch between
    registered and reg-free COM.
