Reliability Problem

hi all,
i have been developping webservices since the last past 7
months, so it's not a "how to" problem.
I hope that someone could maybe help in finding some clues.
Here is my problem:
i have made a webservice, with a java client, and a .NET
Server. Interop works fine. The server sends back the
result, and if the result is an error, it gives the full
error message for explanations. This error message is
initialized to " " (empty) and can only retrieve a
myError.Message().
When i call the webservice, it can work for 5,10 or 20
times, but suddenlty i will get a message "Exception". I
mean, not the full message, just a string "Exception". If
i call back the webservice with the same data, i could get
again an "Exception" or it could work again for 10 times.
So as you can see, it's not easy to reproduce the bug in
order to debug it.
I mean usualy, when it really bugs (like an insert problem
in a database etc...), i get a full message
like "Unexpected end of file from server" or "Must declare
the variable '@EMP_ContactId'". My try/catch deals with
this..
So i have no idea for the reason of this "Exception"
message. No more details, it can bug or work in a random
way... It's not a timeout problem as the server answers,
but it answers "Exception"... I have never seen this
before. A network problem ? a DB problem ? a SOAP problem
(when it's a SOAP problem i usualy get an "I/O Exception
so i don't thinks it's the case here)?
by the way, i have the feeling that this "exception" has more chances to appear when the webservice has not been called since a few minutes.
If i make successive 40 calls, i have no "exception", but if i wait 15 min for the next call (an example), it will give an "exception". and the next call just after will be fine.
maybe this could help you to help me
really weird.
Any help to find a solution would be appreciated.
Regards
Elise
ps: sorry for my coarse english.

hi all, i posted yesterday a question about reliability.
(see bellow).
I found a great clue that could help me, but not enought.
I have a java client calling a .net webservice.
It works fine at 80%. The other 20%, i don't know why, but
suddenly i have an error without explanation.
I now have a trace of the Sub Application_Error(ByVal
sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) :
for those 20% of errors it tells : "Request format is
unrecognized.
at
System.Web.Services.Protocols.WebServiceHandlerFactory.Core
GetHandler(Type type, HttpContext context, HttpRequest
     request, HttpResponse response)
     at
System.Web.Services.Protocols.WebServiceHandlerFactory.GetH
andler(HttpContext context, String verb, String
     url, String filePath)
     at System.Web.HttpApplication.MapHttpHandler
(HttpContext context, String requestType, String path,
String      pathTranslated, Boolean useAppConfig)
     at System.Web.MapHandlerExecutionStep.Execute()
     at System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep
(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously)
I would understand if my java code whas not correct, but
if i send again and again the SAME request (same SOAP
content, i made a SOAP trace to be sure), it will work !!!
So the code to generate the soap message is ok.
I noticed that i have more "chance" to get this error when
the IIS server has just been started and the java client
makes the first call. This first call will often get an
error, but all the other call won't get any error. And
suddenly, after 15 min of inactivity, a new error will be
caught (just an example, the process is a bit random and
the error not so easy to reproduce whenever you want).
I putted this code on the production environment, and this
represents 10 errors /day, it's too much
Why is the request format not valid only 20% ofthe time ?it should be always ok or always bad !!!
Is there anybody here that has an information that could
be helpfull ? I would really appreciate
regards
Elise
ps : sorry for my coarse english again. i do by best ;-)

  • Boot and Reliability Problem

    Greetings,
In August 2008 I bought my first Mac and ever since have trouble with it. I already contacted Apple Support, Sonnet Support, Lacie Support, still there is no solution on the table.
I thought, before I have the maschine picked up I give it a shot in these fora.
    My configuration:
Mac Pro 3.0Ghz, 16 Gig, 4x 750 Gig HD internal, 3x 1TB external (Time capsule, 2x Lacie quadra), Sonnet E4P.
    My main problems:
    1. Noise level:
The maschine emits a humming noise, intervalling up and down, probably located where the PSU is installed (decibel meter check). The noise is clearly audble, even over the AHT noise of the fans speeding up. The resonance can be felt if a hand is put on the chassis.
I asked friends with similiar maschines, and none of them reports this extremly annoying hum. I checked the HD sleds, all sits tight.
I assume this is only able to be resolved by sending the maschine to service.
    2. Boot and Reliability Problems:
If my Mac is out over night, and on booting it up in the morning, it takes around 6-7 minutes until boot cycle is complete. If I am not mistaken, this should be more in the region of 30 seconds.
Up until recently, after boot OSX did not find a harddrive, but I solved this, the reason was that the useless dealer I bought it from formatted one internal drive as MS-DOS FAT, go figure.
However, I need to run a RAID-0 via OSX, and will exchange the WD Caviar SE for WD 1TB RE3 for that purpose. I am also having trouble with my xternal Lacie Drives on Sonnet E4P, but I send system logs and reports to Sonnet still waiting on their answer.
Would it be correct to assume that less than one minute is a more appropriate boot up time?
Does anyone else around here have this noise problem I described?

    Good evening The Hatter,
yeah, I studied a couple of those threads and tried to apply findings. Tell me, you say you have your MCP on the side, does that not cause problems for the DVD drive and/or other parts. The MCP does not look as if it is designed to lay on it's side.
I tried to de couple the chassis from the floor with heavy carpet underlay, still the same. I am not fuzzy, but this sound is really disturbing in a quiet environment, and I often need it quiet when I work on photographs. I left the case open, I pushed the lever half way up, nothing resolved that.
Allow me to ask you something else, you seem to have a lot of Mac years under your belt, would you think my boot problems can come from a dodgy OSX installation? The dealer I bought it from in August installed everything, but has proven to be rather incompetent and very sloppy. The first few weeks, on 10.54, I had probably 8-10 kernel crashes, which stopped after 10.5.5 and so far only occurs when I use sleep mode, hence I can;t use it anymore.
The pain in the butt is that I probably would be best advised to do a complete clean install, hence have to authorise all my software again. - Sigh - I intend to wait with that until i received new HD's.
    Best wishes

  • AirPort Extreme Update 2007-004 did not solve my reliability problems.

The latest update from Apple did not fix the problem on my system, and now I don´t know what I should do, is there anything I can do to somehow fix it?
I can´t use the computer like this, it´s very annoying, for example I can´t browse the web with Safari(constant "Failed to open page" or "You´re not connected to the internet" messages), ethernet is not an option, besides, what´s the point of a laptop if I cannot connect to the network wirelessly?
This is my first MacBook by the way, I like its look & feel, easy of use and integration, but this AirPort issue completely took away the "just works" image I had of Apple´s products.
Don´t get me wrong though, I knew the Mac was not going to be perfect, and that there would be problems(as usual), but I would never have expected something like this.
I´d really like to get this thing to work, the Mac pretty much offers the kind of integration that I´ve always wanted in Linux.
Anyway.. am I the only one whose system is still having problems with AirPort?
What can I do to fix this?
Should I just wait until Apple releases another bug fix for this? how long would this take?
Should I return this MacBook to an Apple store?
I bought this in the U.S. and there is no store on my country(Uruguay), there´re however some Apple Authorized Service Providers, should I take it to them? would they give me a brand new Mac or repair this one for free if I´m covered by the warranty?
I read(http://www.apple.com/support/contact/) that since I´m still within the 90 days of ownership I can call Apple Technical support, but since they don´t have a number for my country, is there an alternative way of contacting them?(via email?).
I don´t know.. what do you people think I shoud do?
+Please don´t recommend me to install an older version, I really don´t want to, besides how do I know it will fix the issue?+
    About the problem:
    Symptoms:
AirPort signal level randomly decreases until connection is lost, and there is no automatic reconnection.
Manual reconnection is required and might not always succeed, and even if it does, it doesn´t last long(usually less than 3 minutes).
Sometimes the network is missing from the menu(when clicking the wifi icon on status bar) and turning off and on AirPort is required.
Judging from what I´ve read here and found on google, this is a known common problem that dates back to at least april 2007(see [1]).
    *Some (useful?) Information:*
    0) It might have worked better before updating (10.4.9 is the version of my Installation discs, I didn´t reinstall) to 10.4.10, but I can´t say for sure.
    1) According to [1] this seems to be a software problem in OS X, since the atheros driver works fine under Windows.
    2) It doesn´t matter if the laptop is running from battery or not, and it doesn´t seem to be related to waking from sleep state since it happens on a clean restart too.
    3) Once in a while, the OS asks me to enter the WPA passphrase again to connect to the network, why does it do this if the passphrase is already stored inside the default login keychain?. (entering the passphrase again does not fix the problem)
    4) Wireless router is a speedtouch modem, it´s properly configured and it´s known to work, its leds indicate that everything is ok.
    5) The MacBook is approx. 6m away from the speedtouch router(walls in between), electronic devices: headless computer next to the speedtouch modem, printer, radio, tv (note: not that it matters since the laptop has worked from this location before).

    Hi,
Well I don´t know what to think now.. I installed the last security update, restarted, went to sleep and now it seems to be working much better, at least there doesn´t seem to be so many drop outs.
I find it a little strange that the airport icon on the status bar that shows signal strength keeps changing, but maybe this is normal behaviour?, don´t know..
I can´t say that the problem is fixed either since I didn´t start to experience airport issues immediately after I updated to 10.4.10, so who knows?
Maybe it works for two days in a row and then it suddenly starts malfunctioning for no apparent reason.
It could be very well be a combination of little problems here and there(some even caused by me editing system preferences) that add up and manifest as a bigger problem, I´ve no idea how to trace it, and as long as it works, I don´t care..
I doubt this will help anyone, but anyway.. the last thing I remember doing before restarting was executing:
    # System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/A/Resources/airp ort --updateprefs
which examines network preferences and repairs them if necessary.
Then I went into System Preferences > Network, AirPort´s options and restored default settings, after that I configured it to require administrator password to "Create Computer-to-Computer networks".
I´m hoping that the whole airport issue not working after the last airport update was a weird glitch or even better, caused by me.
If it starts malfunctioning again, I´ll simply call AppleCare and let them deal with it, by the way, it kind of ***** that the only way of contacting them is via phone and no phone number is listed for my country.. no email address? ...
    Best Regards,
    Federico

  • Reliability problem with command_link

    Hello,
I'm having problems with the command_link tag.
It happens with Mozilla Firefox, it seems to work 100% with IE.
The problem, I think, is linked to the use of Javascript, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, the javascript is executed and everything is ok, and sometimes the href="#" is executed and the behaviour isn't correct.
    This is the code:
    <h:command_link action="#{homeBean.viewAction}">
         <h:output_text value="#{currentElement.reference}"/>
    </h:command_link>
    and the generated HTML:
    <a href="# onmousedown="document.forms[3['homeView:homeForm:table:11:_id23'].value='homeView:homeForm:table:11:_id23'; document.forms[3].submit()">ref12</a>
    Any ideas are welcome,
    Thanks

Has anyone solved this problem, it rears its ugly head with both browsers.

  • Performance and usability problems with Illustrator imports

I am usually an enthusiast advocate for Adobe Software. As a UI/Interaction designer I regularly showcase your products as a shining example.
That's why I am somewhat frustrated about the Flash Catalyst Beta. I trust you guys to come out with SOMETHING GREAT eventually, but I have just spend an entire day with Catalyst and it was not particularly a joy. Couldn't you have released it a bit later to save me the frustration?
    Situation:
    - Medium size Adobe Illustrator CS4 import (10 screens/stages with 20-100 Illustrator objects per screen)
    - Target : 800x600 embedded UI for medical product
    - Illustrator file chosen as starting point
    Performance / reliability problems include
    - Crashing (Vista Core2Duo with 2gig of Ram)
    - Super poor performance (wait 8 seconds to hide/show a layer)
    - No show of thumbnail images anywhere
    - No matching of document size (exact 800x600 from Illustrator became 800x599)
    - Playing the file did not work
    Usability issues
    - Poor test display
    - Poor match with Illustrator file (things seem to be rendered differently!)
    - Window selecting does not work well
    - No hand tool
    - No ability to lock layers
    - Cluttered interface (Not enough space for the "stage"or what you call it)
    - No way to resize Illustrator elements from one of 9 edge/center points
    - etc. etc.
Building a wireframe version from the ground up (with Illustrator import) seemed to work fine
I played around with the MS Blend beta for a while, and while the basic concept of your product is much more clear, the execution of the MS product in the beta phase was lightyears ahead in terms of stability and usability
I'm sure you can do better!
    Koen

    Koen,
Thank you for the detailed feedback about the performance problems you have experienced and your thoughts about features you would like. Let me respond to each of your points
Performance: We are aware that Catalyst doesn't perform well with large complex files. We have made many performance improvements since the current plublic beta, so you should find Catalyst more responsive with larger projects when the next beta is posted.
Here are a few things you can do to work around the performance issues you are seeing with the current beta:
    - Consider rasterizing complex elements that don't need to scaled in Catalyst
    - In Catalst turn complex artwork into optimized graphics using the "Convert to optimized graphics" in the float HUD (heads up display panel)
We have also found that particularly on Windows that Catalyst can run out of memory with large files. This area is also being worked on so stay tuned for the next beta.
    Features:
    - Poor test display [tv] Do you mean the design display doesn't match the appearance of the published project?
    - Poor match with Illustrator file (things seem to be rendered differently!) [tv] we have fixed a lot of bugs here. Expect this to improve a lot in the next beta
    - No hand tool - [tv] coming soon :-)
    - No ability to lock layers [tv] coming soon :-)
    - Cluttered interface (Not enough space for the "stage"or what you call it) [tv] Yes, Catalyst currently cannot dock/undock panels
    - No way to resize Illustrator elements from one of 9 edge/center points [tv] This is also a known limitation. I agree it is useful
I hope the next beta comes closer to meeting your expectations. A lot of performance work and new features has been done since the last public posting, so look forward to beta II.

  • Reliability of K330

Has anyone else had reliability problem with the K330?
I bought end of January and noticed that the system freezes randomly; not with virus scanns or back-ups, randomly for several minutes at a time.  I finallly had support replace the hard drive in Apri.  Problem continues.  It happens in using applications, downloading, emailing, random.  Occasionally I get an error resulting in a blue screen and a fast shut-down.  Now support is going to replace the motherboard.  Hope this works.
My concern is the K330.  Do I just have a bad product or is this symptomatic of the model?

    hey JRJ,
hard to say what's going on here, but do update us after Support has replaced your motherboard.

  • Stability problems with 2560x1440 + 1680x1050 configuration

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a reliability problem when using a 27in external display on my macbook pro. I used this display at 1920x1080 for a time (on a single-link DVI connector), and then eventually ran it at 2560x1440 with a displayport cable. When running at the higher resolution, I notice some reliability problems:
    * Sometimes, when connecting or disconnecting the external monitor, the computer freezes (usually at a screensaver), and requires a hard-reboot, with kernel log errors like "NVDA(OpenGL): Channel timeout!"
    * Sometimes, when connecting or disconnecting the external monitor, the graphical desktop restarts, and there is a stack trace starting in the nvidia driver (I don't have it to hand) in the system log
    * Sometimes, when exiting a screensaver, web browser windows appear with junk/fragments of other windows rendered in them until I move them.
These are things which happen when running the external monitor at its full resolution, but not when running it at a lower resolution. The display on the macbook itself is always active as well.
I have disabled "Automatic graphics switching" in case that was the problem, but am still having reliability issues.
Am I at the limit of what the graphics chip is capable of? Is it supported to run an external display of this resolution and the internal display at the same time?

  • IPhone's reliability issue

Today after receiving several calls around noon, the phone stopped ringing. The phone still receives calls, but it will not ring. I tried to turn the vibrator on and off, but no use. It just won't ring and no sound output from the speaker for any ipod music or movie. I had to power off and power on to get the speaker to work again. I missed one important call because of the muted speaker. If I hadn't check my phone, this muted speaker would have gone on all day and I would had missed more calls.
This is my first time encountering this problem and I am frustrated. This clearly points to a reliability problem. This phone was a replacement from several weeks ago due to my first iPhone had large dead pixels. So this one is practically a new phone. What good is a phone if it recieves call but won't ring??? If this happens again and I misses another important call, I am cancelling my service and returning my iPhone for a full refund. This reliability issue is totally unacceptable with a basic phone feature "ringing" not working properly. Does this happen to you?

Well I hate to be "that guy" but I've had my iPhone for over six months now and I've found it to be even more reliable than my old one-trick pony Nokia 3100 series "dumb" phone and I believe problems with iPhone are more of the exception than the rule.
I don't want to get too philosophical, but people tend to point the finger, like lets say Microsoft Windows, and say "that's an bad, unstable operating system" when in actuality, if you install Windows on some standard hardware and don't install anything else, it will hum along playing Solitaire & Pinball practically forever. 3rd party apps & drivers, and faulty hardware can cause Windows to crash and Windows gets blamed.
I think iPhone might be kind of like that. Maybe local towers are sending funky signals or something requiring the phone to be reset (and I admittedly don't know much about cell technology). I don't know, all I know is in over six months I haven't had any kind of reliability problem with the iPhone or the iPhone software platform.

  • Specific USB problem

    Hi All,
I use a Plantronic's wireless USB headset for use with Skype.
I have been having reliability problems with it for a while. I have it plugged into a USB on my 23 inch Apple Cinema Display. I keep getting drop outs.
I spoke to Plantronics who suggested I plug it directly into my Mac Pro instead to see if that made it more reliable since the headset had certain power requirements that weren't always fulfilled via a USB hub.
My question... does that make sense...? Do Apple Cinema USB ports have lower power outage than direct connection to my Mac Pro...?
    Advice Appreciated.

The display (but not the keyboard) USB ports should provide full power (500 ma).

  • 1102w: reliable or not?

I've had an HP Laserjet 1018 for 7 years now, and have loved its reliabliity. I used 2 or 3 deskjets before that, and HP printers have always been the most reliable, problem-free hardware in my computerized ensemble.
Thinking about an upgrade to the current low-end model, the 1102w, I was reading reviews on amazon and a surprising number gave it only 1 star, primiarly for wireless problems.  I was surprised that it would get rated so low, by such a large percentage of the reviewers.
What experience have users here on this forum had with the 1102w? In case my 1018 goes out, my plan was to replace it with the 1102w (the current low-end laserjet), but now I'm wondering if I should wait for the 1102w's replacement (when it might be replaced, I have no idea) before buying another cheap HP laserjet.
What do people here think of the 1102w? If you are going to respond, I'd appreciate it if you would mention how much experience you have had with this printer.

  • Any problems with a 1TB  boot drive?

My Mac Pro finally got here and I added ram & a 1 TB WD Caviar Black HD as a boot drive. The boot drive as shipped was a 640GB WD Caviar Blue but after a lot of reading, I decided to make the 1TB black the Boot 'cause it's faster & roomier. Really don't want to have to change it out in a few years due to space constraints & go through the setup process all over again.
I also have another 1 TB WD Caviar Black coming (should be here today) that I intend to use as a capture scratch disc. I still have the 640GB blue in the machine for use probably as a boot drive for windows XP Pro & all the programs I run on it in my PC at this time.
The question I have is this: is there any problem with using the 1TB black as a boot drive?
I think I recall that in the past some folks advocated a smaller boot drive, but that was before the days of dual processor, 64 MB cache, and dual heads that make the 1TB quite speedy.
I think I'll setup a PCIe external raid in the not too distant future as the archive & backup resovoir. Any difficulties with that?
    Ken

Thanks for the replies, they are all helpful.
@ Jim C, glad to hear confirmation on your setup success w/ WD Blacks. My thinking was exactly the same as yours, a drive with lots of room is faster.
@David, I've always had good luck with Seagate, but only had one older WD. I'm aware WD went through some reliability problems earlier. The reviews I found on the recent WD Cav blacks all said they were better all around drives than Seagate now a days. Sorry to hear about your drive failure, time will tell for me. I'm definitely going to go with enterprise class drives on the raid and will also have an installed spare in case on goes.
Some days it's peanuts & other days it's shells. Despite marketing claims on MTBF, there will always be "premature" failures as Jim Kells points out in his reply.
Ultimately when manufacturers get a better handle on SSD's, they will be the longest lived if for no other reason than no moving parts. Performance droop on many of them now also colors the current scene, IMO. Until then it's somewhat of a crap shoot.

  • Infinity Problems

I was quite excited to get the new Infinity service last Friday but I've had nothing but reliability problems and now have a total loss of service.  When the installation engineer o ld me to expect it to fluctuate for the first week, I didn't expect this.
When first connected, I was consistently seeing 33Mbps downstream and 6.8Mbps upstream.  Previously,
    I had ADSL2+ with typically between 11 - 14Mbps (down) and 1.2 - 1.6Mbps (Up) on any given day.
Everything appeared to work well on both my wired and wireless devices for the first day, and I ran regular speed tests 10 times each hour to see what kind of mean performance I was getting.  Strange thing was that I noticed performance was dropping mostly from 10pm onwards where the max downstream would be 16Mbps until about 8am when it would go back up to 25Mbps+.  The upstream performance was also degraded.
By Sunday around midday I was seeing regular loss of connectivity with my Draytek router reporting that "the server was not responding".  By this morning I had a total loss of service.
I reported this to the customer service people who told me a fault was logged because they could see a line fault and that someone would respond within 2 days.  Over an hour later, I thought I'd check to see what was going on and was promptly told not to call back again within two days as they would only generate another fault call.  Confusingly the girl also told me not to cal back within a week!!!!
It's obvious there's a problem as the BT Modem's DSL light is off and only blinks briefly when I try to instigate a connection.
I know this isn't a business service, but I was supposed to be working from home to day too, so no luck there.
I've always had a a small amount of noise on the line and BT have come out three times in the last 6 years to attend but I've never had it like this before.
Has anyone else noticed a similar problem with their infinity service so short after installation?
Did the BT installer just not terminate the wires on the back of the face-plate properly or could it be another problem?

So I lost half a days pay, but it looks as if my Infinity service is finally working.
At last, an engineer appeared that actually understood and could articulate how the Infinity service works and who could troubleshoot properly and in a logical and iterative manner.  Before he started, I explained what I'd observed through my trending of the last 7weeks, and that despite repeated remote and locally run line tests by BT, I was told that there was nothing significantly wrong.  And that when I disputed this, it was largely dismissed.  I also told him the history of noise related issues over the last six years and although I thought I'd only called BT out three times, I recalled that those three times were regarding noise on the voice circuit and that BT had attended site to attend with ADSL and phone issues at least 8 times since I'd moved in, and that the last time the engineer ran a new length of copper from the eaves of my house to the data point on the ground floor.
He plugged in the usual diagnostic equipment and this time explained to me that he could see huge numbers of CRC errors, similar to the one's I'd been seeing using my IP monitoring software.  It was a relief that someone actually agreed with me that this was happening!  He also left it plugged in for more than a few minutes so he got a better idea of what was happening.
He also showed me that as a result my bandwidth availability was fluctuating, and explained that the auto-profiling would attempt to stabilise the service.  I asked if anyone monitored for the number of instances of this type of event and he said that it's only likely that someone would look at this kind of information if it appeared that many events were affecting their infrastructure but they were largley not interested in the last mile or tail circuit.  They would just wait until customers complained of poor performance.
He also accepted my rationale that my equipment had nothing to do with the problem as the Infinity modem's DSL light was either dead of occasionally flashing.  I told him I'd changed the RJ11 cable for another BT provided cable and my own Belkin shielded version.  But for the sake of troublshooting properly he checked with his own cable - and it made no difference.
He knew from his monitoring equipment that the problem lay between the physical cable from my house to the termination point in the green box, since his tests at the switch-end showed a fully operational service.
I felt I could trust this bloke and the information he was showing me, so I asked him to hear me out on what I thought the root cause could be based on all the issues I've had over the last 6 years.  In my view, it was a no brainer that the cabling must be at fault, and that even though part of the last section of copper had been replaced, there must be another physical fault somewhere.
I told him the only last night, I made a few calls and each time they felt as if the recipient at the other end was in an echoey room.  And considering I had invested in the latest Siemens crystal clear handsets I was surpised so I plugged in one of my ancient analogue handset and found the same problem.
Of course, but how could there be a problem considering the last three calls I made to BT over the last week, they confirmed the line was perfect with no real traceable noise issues????  And the previous engineers who visited also concurred with this.  At that point the engineer really showed his knowledge of troubleshooting and explained that the remote test that are performed to check for noise are quite crude and although they may look for voltage drops they are nothing short of a rudimentary continuity test.  So I asked him if he should perform some more robust check on each physical section and he agreed it would be the best thing to do, and off he went to the pole outside my house.
So what was the cause?  It turned out that the termination of the copper pair at the telegraph pole outside my house was the culprit.  To put it simply, the very old corroded/oxidised cable was extremely fragile and a visual inspection would miss what a firm tug would reveal.  So a strip down and re-termination was all that was required.
When I asked him why after several repeated complaints to BT over the years about noise did no one ever check the physical connections, he admitted that most engineers would just look to see that the physical connections were present and that there were no obvious breaks.  They would also do a basic line check but perhaps not a more thorough examination.  He concluded that it was possible that this had always been an issue just getting worse over time and apologised that no one ever checked properly.
I thanked him for being honest and didn't blame him but did tell him I would try again to complain to Customer Services to see what they were willing to do about re-imbursements.
I always did wonder why my ADSL2 service was never as good as several of my neighbours' in my estate, and when I challenged my previous ISPs, they told me I should be grateful for what I had considering my distance from their core switch.  So now I know.
It was down to the noise issue that I first raised 6 years ago, that was caused by a physical cabling issue.
If only the score of engineers who came out over the last 6 years were as thorough, knowledgeable and willing to talk about their troubleshooting process as the bloke who came today.
Fingers crossed, this service will now work.
I'm now seeing typical latency figures of between 3 and 60ms to random sites in the UK, which between excellent and very good.  I've only seen three instances of the connection being dropped since 11am when the engineer left today, which is 20 times less than my previous typical day and 200 times less than my worst day.
I think there's a long way to go before BT can offer a truly customer oriented service from many angles:
    1) Train technicians to a higher standard, start with the basics of troubleshooting faults in a logical and thorough manner. 6 years is a long time to resolve a physical line problem.
    2) Train technicians to be more customer oriented
    3) Customer service could do what they are paid to do and respond to me, even just once would be nice and please stop trying to deflect or avoid the subject of re-imbursements where BT are clearly at fault.
    4) Improve your automated problem management by using your auto-generated MI in a smarter and more proactive way.  If you've got the intelligence to throttle back or re-profile a service in an attempt to make a poor situation slightly more stable at the expense of the end-user experience i.e. slower but still error-prone service, how about putting together the evidence that a customer has repeatedly complained about poor service and the fault trending data you can see, so how about assigining an engineer to get to the root cause of the problem, as your customers will be much happier with your service. In this case, I wouldn't have been chasing you up for 6 years with a plethora of repeat problems.  It could have saved a huge amount of money on the score of engineer callouts I've had.
    5) How about keeping together all the records of faults a user has, so when a customer really has had a rough time Customer service and the customer can both look at the same information and agree what the best course of action is, instead of expecting the customer to keep a log of all conversations, emails etc and asking them to recall events each time.  Even keeping a track of the reason for the call would be useful, since I'm frequently frustrated by BT not knowing that I'm chasing up on an issue I've raised before as the have no log of previous calls!
I'm still dissatisfied about the level of customer service and when I get some time I'll try and speak to them again about my re-imbursement.

  • Sharepoint AppFabric Issue

    Hi All,
Just recently new to Sharepoint in our company we have went with the foundation 2013 product.
Had a bit of bother Setting the server up initially as our servers do not have direct access to the internet, so did the offline installation through Prerequsite.exe and i think this is what might have caused this issue as i messed about quite a lot learning
    how to get everything installed.
    So here lies the issue,
In the Central Admin page, under health analyzer i am getting the error - Title "One of the cache host in the cluster is down" Failing Servers - [My servers Hostname] - SPDistibutedCacheService (AppFabricCachingService)
The AppFabric service is started with the NT Auth Network Account automatically so i dont think its a problem with the service itself but i could be wrong.
There hasn't been any problems reported thus far with the site but i want to make sure that I have this server configured to its optimum.
Anyone any ideas for this sharepoint novice?
    Thanks
    Andy

It wont let me reanalyize it for some reason and this is version 99.0 of the error.
Also the Distributed Cache Service on the Manage Server Services page is stopped and will not start. but the app fabric service on the server is fine.
Seem to have gathered a few more errors now. Must have built this thing really badly myself.

I have a Yamaha RX-V673 which is Airplay enabled, but i can't get Airplay to work either on my Mac book or my iphone. The receiver is connected to my network and i can control it using the iphone App and via the web browser option.
Do I need Apple TV or to change some settings somewhere?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You are making some progress with setup of wireless network. Apparently there is reliability problem with the wireless connection. Perhaps you want to refer to following Apple support documents and start tweaking parameters in the router to improve the reliability. I used to have third-party routers such as Belkin and Netgear but switched to Apple Airport routers (Time Capsule then Airport Extreme for now) because of incompatibility issues whenever Apple upgrade Mac OS X. But since Apple develops Airplay protocol as alternative to Bluetooth for wireless audio/video streaming (with much better bandwidth) and must be deployed in any wireless network, there is no reason third-party routers not working for Airplay protocol.
