Relocation of JDK & drastic performance slowdown?
Hi there, and thanks in advance for any suggestions:
We are experimenting with redistributing the JDK (1.4, when released -- working with b2 a/t/m, will upgrade next week) as part of our product within our directory structure. With the Windows version of our product we are experiencing some bizarre, drastic performance slow-downs in XML-related operations (parsing, transformation) when using Tomcat 3.2.3, at least, and possibly other Java-based software, with this "embedded" JDK.
All of Tomcat's pre-requisites (TOMCAT_HOME, JAVA_HOME env vars) are being set correctly, and I've also examined the the JavaSoft and plugin registry keys very carefully and made sure they are getting re-populated correctly on the target (installation) machine, naturally with new paths where needed. Nothing has actully been done to this JDK, mind you, other than the aforementioned relocation.
...Of course, if that wasn't vague enough, we sometimes see irrational slowdowns in apparently random installations when we are using a normally installed JDK/Tomcat combination. We are trying to nail down exactly what yields what, but that's just going to take time. Could this have to do with mis-matches with the XML-related stuff in Tomcat's jaxp.jar and JDK 1.4's new XML stuff?

I assume that you have checked to be sure that no exceptions are being written to the application server log file? There are non-fatal exceptions that I have seen that are "masked" to the user but can be seen in the logs that can occur. I do not know if that is possible in your server combination. Just a thought of another place to look.

My wife's iPad 1 seems about the same or a bit faster depending on what she's doing - and of course has the same issues with some apps that need upgrading.
So far the only downside I can see to upgrading is that I've taken a small hit on the battery due to the improved notifications mostly, I think. By small I mean at the very end of the day when I connect it to my alarm dock, it has just over 20% instead of the more usual 25-30% charge left -
Performance slowdown after uploads iMac
Set new iMac up this last weekend. After uploading software updates there was a marked
slowdown in performance while connecting to the internet and browsing websites.
Is Lion turnning out to be a bad kitty or is mac having other system issues at this time?You can disable the automatic Time Machine backup, and manually backup which is much more recommended, by going to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Time Machine and turning it off, but showing it in the menu bar. From the menubar icon for it, it lets you backup whenever you wish with the Backup Now menu item.
I recommend doing that when you aren't doing anything else. Your external hard drive should be at least twice the capacity of your internal. If that's not practical for the amount of data you are transfering, you might want to clone your data with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner instead.
You can't read and write off the same CD drive at the same time, so I think you have your terminology confused. Unless you are attempting a direct CD to CD copy from one drive to another. For that you might be better off just imaging the CD with Toast and then burning. You have to deal with asynchronous data transfer between devices. -
Performance slowdown due to frequent updates
Hi All,
In our application users will update many flags during daytime whcih causes the system slowdown towards the end of the day. The page will query a view (built over 3 tables and has around 75 columns ) and display the content in the UI. If not many updates we could see the performance is not much updated.
Its a legacy system and designed long back to have many data in one improtant table and all the updates happen on the same table.
We dont want to break it now as it might break the existing flow as well as its very crucial system to have many imp financial details.
We tried analysing the table in a frequent period of time also drop and create the index on the table, but neither solved the issue.
Could anyone give any tips in it? is there a way that we could make the performance better by some sort?
We have index on the table and currently we do analyse once everyday.

From the information given, you noticed a slowdown of the reponse time on the client side (gui)... right?
Maybe try to re-execute some queries of client, directly against the database... maybe some waits are on your middle tier when your database still runs fine.
When having end-user complains, i always double check where the waits might be in the chains, before digging into the database itself. This saved me a lots of time and efforts over the past years.
Just a thought...

I have used a G3 B&W running system 9.2, and ever since I got it a couple years ago, it has a tendency to slow down the longer it is on. For example, I turn it on, check my email, launch Adobe Illustrator and do some design, go away for half and hour, come back and low and behold, just clicking from window to window, or opening a file that was a snap on startup now takes several seconds to a minute or more. I do a restart and it is OK for a while, but over the next half hour it slows way down again on finder type of commands or operations. I have reinstalled system 9.2, swapped memory, changed hard disks, whew... but to no avail.
Sort of in the dark as to your system hardware setup

You need PC100 125MHz 8 nanosecond SDRAM (any 64MB
SDRAM will be 10 ns., which is too slow).
You want VM off, and you should probably have 256MB
or more RAM.
A PCI drive controller is essential, even rev 2 will
benefit. If I was buying/upgrading again, I'd go with
Serial ATA drives/controller, and 10K Raptor if I
wanted to have 'the best" performance.
I think every drive should probably be reinitialized
from time to time, and use the Zero-all option
followed by Test Disk Function in Drive Setup.
What type of USB device? Also, FW ports seem to
eventually just go out, so I would invest in FW/USB2
PCI card as well.
The battery needs to be replaced every couple years,
more so if it is not plugged in. And you don't know
where/what its prior owner did.
Boot into Open Firmware. Command + Option + o + f
type:

set-defaults
reset-all
System will reboot. Good place to start when
troubleshooting a system. (You will need to reset
some things in OS 9 like startup disk, energy saver
probably.)
Make sure that you 'adjust' the default memory for
even control panels and "appe" extensions. And for
Launcher and the applications you use (Get Info).

It is interesting you wrote when you did. I started the process of pulling plugs on extensions and drives, one by one and restarting and letting sit with several apps. (the problematic ones such as email and Illustrator. The very last plug I pulled was the DVD Rom drive itself (the power jumper, the ribbon cable and the video card jumper(?)). Vouala! No more slowing down of any significant nature.
I do have Sonnets ZIF G3 500 card installed (though I pulled it for a while)
I do have Sonnets ATA 133 card installed.
I do have Three new hard disks that are newly formated with latest drivers.
I do have Sonnets Tempo 2.0 Fireware/USB card installed.
(I do alot of graphics and need the flexibility and ports and backup)
All four 128Mb. SDRAM chips are PC100.
So it is the dang DVD Rom drive more than likely.
Next question, what do I replace it with? -
Performance slowdown when running through report server
There is a considerable difference between running a particular report through the report server. It is slower than when run directly from ReportBuilder.
Each points to the same data/application server. There is very little formatting or other work required of the client.
The difference is about 10-fold, i.e. a report taking 1 minute to run via ReportBuilder takes about 10 minutes when launched through the report server.
I have no idea how to begin diagnosing this. Our DBA says it is possible for the 'explain plan' to differ because the SQL is contained within the .REP file (and not as a stored procedure in the database). Even so, how/where would one begin looking to discover the reason for the dramatic performance difference?
Performance monitors on both the app/database server and the Oracle engine show that the slow running report consumes about the same amount of resources as the faster report. The slower report simply takes 10 times as long to run.
Perhaps we're not looking at the 'best' performance monitor parameters?
Anything else we can use to trace execution differences?When we get this we try the following.
The dba's have some tool which can view the sql running under the server and the builder - you can then see if the plan is different.
Ordering - if there is a lot of ordering we get the SQL to pre order using the ORDER BY clause, this means the IAS server has less work to do (depending on your PC we find a PC is always quicker at formatting than the server).
Userlogon - we have a different user logon to that used by the server, this sometimes gives rise to different plans. You can change this in reports using ALTER_SESSION. E.g. we find this can speed up reports:

Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
MBP massive performance slowdown
Hello,
So I picked myself up a new MacBook Pro, standard 15 inch dual 2.8ghz model, about three weeks ago. I updated it to 10.6.2. For the first two weeks, it was fantastic in every way. About a week ago, there started to be occasional little 'glitches' in its operation - interactive things (clicking on a menu, changing text fields, entering text) would cause the computer to stall with the spinning rainbow pinwheel for 3-6 seconds. Over time, these became (and have remained - multiple stalls while opening Safari, navigating here, and writing this message) much more frequent. Other things that cause stalls include scrolling up/down documents/pdfs/web pages, opening folders, closing windows, and so on. The computer is now generally much slower than the old MacBook I had before. It used to be a speed demon.
Things I have done to try to resolve it / figure out what's going on:
1. Using activity monitor to watch for stray/processor hungry processes. Nothing unusual showed up, my cpu use averaged around 3% and hit a high around 18% during a period of editing a document that saw many stalls. The system never had less than 80% of the cpu idle and generally had more than 95%, so I feel insufficient cpu power is not the cause (plus, this happens frequently when I have only one or two applications open, and they're applications like Safari or TextEdit that should not come close to stressing this CPU. It also happens when playing games, and the games play/perform very smoothly except for stalls every 20-30 seconds.)
2. Checked /repaired permissions with Onyx and the Disc Utility while booted from the install disc. Also checked file structure / volume status / SMART status several times, came up good each time.
3. Booting from install disc, erasing the disk, reinstalling/reupdating the system. I did not zero out the hard disk, this seemed unecessary.
4. Repairing permissions as above, again. For what it's worth, a bunch of FlashPlayer related permissions came up as incorrect and were repaired, but this had no impact on the problem.
5. Reinstalling/updating Flash Player, then repairing permissions again just in case.
6. Briefly contemplated deleting stuff to free up hard drive space, before remembering that 454.56 gigs out of my 500 gigabyte drive are free, so hard drive space is clearly not the issue.
None of the above steps had a positive or otherwise noticeable impact on the condition.
So, yeah, my computer is becoming very difficult/slow to use and I have no idea why. Any suggestions about what is wrong and what I can do to fix it would be very appreciated. As far as zeroing out the drive prior to re-install....I make it a practice to zero out the drive although I dought that's you problem either.
If after reinstalling didn't correct the problems you could have a hardware problem....try running the hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
Most suspect would be the RAM, HD, or logic board.....?

Performance slowdown (harddisk problem?)
After a recently kernel update, my harddisk spins down quite a lot. The load_cycle_count increases by 1~2 per minute, for example when i use mouse to open or close a webpage, the harddisk will spin up again(with a short freeze sometimes).
hdparm -B 255(or 254) /dev/sda doesn't fix the problem.
Any hint where I should look into? Thanks.

As I had disabled HD management by laptope mode I wondered what was causing the spin down. Apparently, the setting CONTROL_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT (the only HDD related setting that was enabled) was causing the spin downs.

LM_AC_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS is set to 20 by default, which doesn't make sense to me, as the laptop still is on AC. Therefore I have set it to the same value as without laptop mode.
It seems like this has solved the issue.

This has happened to me twice: The most recent time, I opened up an on-going iMovie 4.0.1 project (66 minutes) and all of a sudden, the audio track sounds like it's run in slo-mo and chopped up (10 beats/sec). The video runs faltering, then freeezes (while distorted sound continues).
This time I found that limited selections of the entire project would run fine, although while 40 minutes was the maximum length before failure when starting selection from the begining, starting the selection at other points could only reach 11 minutes before failure.
The .mov file exhibits the same corruption as does the iDVD version of the iMovie project. Other, shorter iMovie projects are unaffected.
It's almost as if when the app knows it's playing back the entire length, there is some sort of "bandwidth" problem in the rendering-for-playback in RAM. When thias happens, other apps slow down as well (FI, "Activity Monitor").
I have done the following:
1.) tossed the iMovie preferences
2.) rebuilt permissions
3.) run the Hardware Diagnosis CD for this PB
I have yet to run "CacheOutX".
The first time this happened was when I installed iLife06. When I opened the project in iMovie6, I faced the same pureed audio. I got scared, and reinstalled iMovie4 (leaving in the rest of iLife06). (Yes, I had to step back to OS 10.2.2 for the reinstallation of iMovie4, and then move forward back to 10.3.9.)
With that combination of iMovie4, the rest of iLife06, and 10.3.9 everything ran smoothly. At that point I backed up all the .dv source files to DVD-RW, which I still have.
I looked through the archives here, and didin't find a good match for my problem.

I'll recap here. In my media folder there were 26 "voice" files, a total of 183MB (nearly all of them extracted from video clips). I removed them to a back-up folder, and immediately the project file in question cleared up. I happened to check the voice files using the preview functions in the directory's column view and found one in among all which played the original corrupted audio. (incidentally the clip one which the timeline was cued each time I'd opened the project subsequent to the corruption, as if iM4 was trying to tell me something.
Just on a chance, I tried moving all but the corrupted voice file back. No cigar, it wasn't one corrupted audio clip ruining it for everyone.
I'm happy with the work-arounds you've listed, but as I mentioned in a reply in iM6 HD, it's time for me to move on to FCE.

JDK Performance tests...interesting results...
In an effort to try and eek out as much performance from a Java application as possible, I decided to conduct a little experiment on various JDKs on Sun Solaris 8. What I found was very interesting, and I thought I would share this with the group.
I tested 2 main areas, Class Generation and Number Crunching. I wrote a little application that does a series of tests a multitude of times, timming each one and the overall, and reporting the time. I tested the 1.2.2, 1.3.1, and 1.4.0 (both 32-bit and 64-bit). Here is what I found...
Class Generation
There has been this argument at the water cooler for sometime that cloning an object is faster than creating a new one. I created two tests...one that creates 1000 objects 10000 times using the constructor, the other creates a single "default" object, then clones 1000 objects 10000 times using the Object.clone() method. The two methods are identical, except the cloning requres a try/catch block around the clone() call and it creates the default class in it's constructor (both use a home-grown class called DummyClass, which implements java.lang.Cloneable). All classes where compiled with the JDK 1.3.1.
What I found is that cloning was about 26.16% <b>slower<b> than actually creating the object, finishing on average in 295822.133ms vs. 218438.8ms. The slowest performers overall was the JDK 1.4.1, 64-bit, and the fastest was the 1.3.1 with a -server flag. Here is the chart:

In this test I pitted the 1.2.2, 1.3.1, and 1.4.0 against one another. This uses the same Class Generation test as above, plus a Fibinochi number test to perform a calculation intensive test. I also tested the code compiled in different means. Here is the chart (it is a link, because the chart is pretty large):

Ironically, the 1.2.2 outperformed the other JDK tests hands down. The only explination I have is that the 1.2.2 is running in native threads, and I cannot figure out how to turn that off the 1.2.2, nor turn it on the other JDK versions.
Another interesting note is that the 64-bit 1.4.0 was out performed in class creation, but did pretty well in raw calculations, almost matching the 1.2.2, even with it's native threads. It also seemed to perform ever-so-slightly better without the -server switch, but all-in-all it didn't make much of a difference. The other JDKs all performed much better with the -server flag on.
I am interested to find what everyone else thinks about this. In particular, can anyone instruct me on how to turn on native threads in the 1.3.1 and 1.4.0 so we can level the playing field? Also, I'd be interested to see some other numbers, if anyone else has any.
Mike BauerThe reason the -server option didn't make a difference when you used the 64-bit mode is that the -server is implicit when you use 64-bit.
In other words, if you are using java1.4, the options "-d64 -server" and plain "-d64" are the same thing. -
Since i first installed the Lion OS, my mac has been having performance slowdowns while working on Pages. It appears to affect all functional software and hardware. E.G. when clicking either the dashboard or the desktop button it does nothing, Pages has a horrible lethargic processing, etc.
The strange thing is that Pages does reflect a considerable improvement if working in the fullscreen environment.
If anyone else is having or had this issue could you please give advice.

However, there is a big difference opening Pages/Numbers/Keynote from Launchpad or my previous Dock. If I use Launcpad, those software open now decently quick. Using Dock is much more slower.
Have you tried removing the Dock icons for iWork and readding them?
I also downloaded Lion Disk Recovery Assistant - I am surprised that these were not on my Mac already, though my Automatic upgrade assistant informs that no new upgrades are available.
You may be surprised, but you're not being singled out. The Lion Disk Recovery Assistant was not made available to anyone via Software Update. It's a manual download from Apple's Support web pages.
If you were not aware of the Mac OS X 10.7.1 update being available you should check System Preferences > Software Update and ensure it's set to check for updates as frequently as you require. -
Performance degradation when using foreign keys
Hi,
I face drastic performance degradation when I add foreign keys to a table and perform insert / update on that table.
I have a row store table to which I need to insert around 1,50,000 records.
If the table has no foreign key reference it takes maximum of 5 seconds but if the same table has references to other tables (in my case there are 3 references), the processing speed reduces drastically to 2 minutes.
Is there any solution / best practice that can help me in gaining performance (processing speed) in this situation?

When you perform one insert in any database table which is having foreign key relationships, it will check the corresponding parent tables to check whether the master data is available or not. If your table is having 2 foreign key relationship, it happen twice per insert. Hence the performance will degrade. This is one of the reasons why ECC doesn't establish foreign key relationship in the back end database. The case is not just for INSERT, for UPDATE & DELETE the same is applicable.

System performance slow - vanishing wallpaper
My G5 seems to be experiencing a performance slowdown but it passes any diagnostic test that I perform. Lately it has been misbehaving when asked to handle graphicly complex applications such as iPhoto and Photoshop. It also "forgets" my wallpaper and reverts to the standard blue background after closing a graphically complex application.

I can probably nail the wallpaper problem down to bad preference file for the 'desktop picture' as it is known on the MacOS. Bin the file "com.apple.desktop.plist" which is found in your User folder: [hard disk root]/Users/[your User folder name]/Library/Preferences/
As for the slowdown/lack of performance, it could be due to either the application itself is inherently slow with underpowered Macs (see app's minimum specs). Or, if your Mac is up to the task performance wise, it may to do with lack of System volume's hard disk space, which will effect the virtual memory file which MacOS X uses all the time if you don't have enough real memory available. Max'ing out your RAM for the Mac will boost performance on any app that requires loads of memory. -
AIR 2.6 performance on iOS devices
When I first tried iOS packager it looked too raw and slow to use in real applications. But the technology was very promising and product was obviously far from release. A new version of AIR (2.6) was released recently and it is claimed that performance on iOS devices was improved. I downloaded new AIR SDK and repackaged sample iOS application. However, I wasn't able to detect any significant performance boost. In fact, application seemed to work even slower on iPad. What is weird, I could see some speed increase on iPhone 4. But neither execution performance on iPad, nor on iPhone is not even close to the execution speed of the same application (although packaged with AIR 2.5) on Android device (Galaxy Tab). I can imagine that Android packaging could work for me. But execution on iOS devices is definitely too slow so far. Btw, I use Flash Builder Burrito and Flash Hero SDK with new mobile flex components for the development.
The question is, what is your experience with AIR 2.6 iOS packager? Any significant increase in performance? Are there any special steps required to turn on iOS performance optimization in builder or packager?
I'm going to try AIR 2.6 Android packager next. Will post an update when done.sorr for the dupe, but i already posted this in the iOS packager forum:
the one big advantage with 2.6 publishing is, that the app behaves as it should when it comes to moving objects performance slowdown.
Before performance would break down in strange ways if I inserted too many moving objects in my sandbox. Now the framerate just goes down when raising the objects count.

Same principle as with FlashKevin. Just Sprites and scripting no timeline stuff, one enterframe thats handles all the object controllers. GPU accelerated.
You absolutely have to use cacheAsBitmapMatrix or else Sprites/Bitmaps will look jaggy and performance just sucks bigtime. I am also setting cacheAsBitmap = true.
I had some bad performance, when i packaged a project that ran fine with the old packager due to a stage scaling issue.
Performance on the ipad seemed to be really bad when publishing a iPhone project without "stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE" with 2.6.
I am actually pretty happy with this release (at the moment).
