Removing Partition Failed in WD External HD All The Time!

Have problem in removing partition in WD External 1 TB Hard Drive!
The Main 1 TB WD My Passport is showing Format in MS-DOS (FAT) while the two partition under it shows in Mac OS Extended (Journeled)!
I want to remove both partition and creat one portion in Mac Extended (Journeled) Format. Everytime I try to create 1 portition with Mac Extended (Journeled) Format it failed with showing " Partion Failed : couldn't unmount disk" message!
Is there anyone who is faced same issue and fix it?
Thank you in Advance

In your second image it says…
You can't resize the partitions on this disk because it uses the Master Boot Record partition scheme.
So you will have to delete both partitions & recreate them as desired, losing any data on that disk. Are you sure that you need to use a MBR partition table? Have you got backups of this data on any other disks? Backup these volumes before you begin.
MBR is generally a Windows format for booting Windows OS's. Mac OS used 'GUID partition tables' by default & will allow resizing on GUID tables but not MBR ones.
If you want to repartition the disk with a GUID partition table try this…
Select each of the volumes in the sidebar & choose 'Unmount' in Disk Utility's toolbar ('02' and 'Mac OS' should become unmounted unless some process is using files on either volume). Note: 'volumes' are the indented items below the disk in the sidebar.
In the Partition tab, edit the 'partition layout' to create 2 volumes & resize them to whatever you need, also set the format & names etc.
Click the Options button & set the partition table to use 'GUID partition table'.
When you apply that the disk will be reformatted & the entire disk will have the data removed & new file systems will be written.
If you cannot get that to work, quit all other apps reboot & retry - that may stop other apps using any files on these volumes.

  • JFS partition after force shutdown needs fsck all the time

Basically, I have a problem that everytime I do a force shutdown, my JFS /files partition doesnt mount as it wants to be fsck'ed with jfs_fsck before.
Once I do that it's all happy again, says nothing was wrong.
    jfs_fsck version 1.1.14, 06-Apr-2009
    processing started: 2/27/2010 14.43.52
    Using default parameter: -p
    The current device is: /dev/mapper/holm-files
    Block size in bytes: 4096
    Filesystem size in blocks: 159362048
**Phase 0 - Replay Journal Log
    Filesystem is clean.
Is there a way of making the system do an fsck on it's own if the partition doesn't mount and then reattempt the mount?
    Thanks

I don't believe there is anything actively wrong with the partition though.
It's just when I do a force shutdown it complains - quite naturally. But i'd like Arch to do an FSCK as part of bootup if it fails to mount this drive.

When logging in into yahoo mail after typing in password Firefox is adding something, probably remembered password and login fails all the time. At yahoo mail Notepad does not work because it is impossible to close the list of items and they cover information, so I have to go to IE.

Only when i go to a different browser (like IE) after i clear it , then all that shows up is the pages i visited in IE , that is what bugs me , why is IE browsing history sowing up in Firefox ??
Basically , i can clear the history in Firefox , and then for a example , go to Craigslist , using IE7 (launching it from a complete different Icon , in other words at that time i never open Firefox) , then after closing out , or even leaving open as it does not seem to matter , i go into Firefox , and hit History , and there is every place i visited in IE7 , on my History in Firefox

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • I need to share a file with sec.(windows based). She uses it all the time. I need to just download updated version every few days. I have an old airport extreme and was hoping to attach an external drive. Will this work?

I need to download an updated version of a file every few days to use. My secretary  works on the file all the time. I thought i could use my old airport extreme and attach an external HD and set up a network to do just this. At work we alll use pc's. How can i make this work? At the moment we use usb stick to transfer which is getting to be a bit of a pain as the file grows every week. Presently 5GB.

Yes, you can use either the 802.11g or 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to attach an external USB HDD for file sharing. Either AEBS model would allow you to share out this HDD to either Macs or PCs. From the PC, the shared HDD would appear as a network drive which you can map via Windows Explorer.

Check Finderr->Preferences->General and ensure that HDs are selected for display. If so and they still don't, Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, and see if that does the trick.

  • Does external HD have to be on all the time?

So I have an external drive I'm using for Time Machine. It tends to run hot if I leave it on all the time (passive cooling enclosure- no fan). Plus it's extra noise around my otherwise nearly silent mac.
So I've been turning it off and on, and usually when I turn it on the activity light starts blinking and Time Machine goes to backing up. Tonight I connected the drive and it shows up under finder but isn't doing anything. Do I need to send some command to start the backup? (I added some photos today I wanted to backup).
Do I need to leave it on all the time? Most of the external HDs I see these days don't have a cooling fan- I'm not sure if they are supposed to be on all the time. I'm looking at upgrading to a 500GB WD My Book drive, (using a 120GB drive already 80GB full after one week) but it doesn't have a fan either.

I leave mine off and turn it on only when I want to backup (once per day). You can manually start the backup from System Preferences or if you enabled the icon on the Main menu, from it.

  • Mac Mini extremely unresponsive, pinwheel of death all the time, fails reboot.

I got my mac mini 2011 the MC816LL/A model in February and don't give it much usage so I was surprised when it started behaving erratically and and giving me the pinwheel of death all the time, the issues started all of a sudden a couple of months ago. Even when I force reset the computer fails and then i have to turn it off completely and wait more than 15 mins to be able to use it again, totally ridiculous... I've read all the threads about the issue and they mention OSX lion being sluggish and also to reset PRAM as last resort after I've tried everything under the sun(uninstalling buggy software, repairing disk permissions, general maintenance... etc) I know there has to be something wrong on the software side because I still own an old PowerBook g4 that i got back in 04' and it has never given me any issues so I'm extremely fed up with this issue since this computer is supposed to be better. Any suggestions??

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • During the verification phase of burning photos it fails yet it seems that all the photos are there?

during the verification phase of burning photos it fails yet it seems that all the photos are there?

    Greetings,
Verification occurs after the burn is complete.  The computer goes back to check the disk it just completed burning for errors.  The disk is burned, it just didn't burn to the computer's satisfaction and may contain errors that will prevent it from working either on this computer or others.  Then again it may work fine if it is a very minor error.
    Common causes:
    Low quality DVD/CD media
DVD/CD media that does not match the specifications for the drive in the computer
    Resolutions:
Buy a brand of DVD/CD that has a reputation for making quality media
Check to see what speeds your optical drive in your computer supports: http://support.apple.com/specs/#imac
--- Once you locate your model on the specs page search for the word "optical" and make note of the speed of disks the drive uses.  If your drive says it burns at 8x for example and you purchase a 16x disk then the disk does not match the drive.
    Hope that helps!

ever since I have continuously problems with my external HDD that disconnect all the time and cause problems in other software (Lightroom, Adobe PS CS6) ... it is not  a HDD problem, because it occurs with my 3TB WD HDD (Time Machine), my 1TB WD and  1TB IOMEGA
any one have a solution? anyone dealt with this problem in the apple care program?

You are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare.  Call them.  Let them deal w/it.

  • Keeping external docking stations connected all the time?

I would like to connect a couple hard drive docking stations to a new iMac so I can easily swap out different bare hard drives. Are there any issues or reasons to not keep two docking stations connected via FW or TB connected all the time?
    Thanks.

Should be no problem, just remember to Eject the Disks in the Finder before removing from the Dock.

  • Some key shortcuts fail to work all the time

Since updating to OS 10.7.2, some keyboard shortcuts don't always work.
Since I prefer most of the time not to have the previous page shown when an app opens again, I close the window before quiting. I use CMD-W but often it will not work at all or at least might take 2 or more attempts. When this happens, I use the Close Window on the file menu will work as does clicking on the red dot.
What is happening? Is this a Lion update problem?

    See if this helps.
    Calibrate the home button
    1. Open a stock iOS app, such as Contacts
    2. Press & hold the sleep/wake button at the top of your device until the red slider control appears.
    3. Immediately release the sleep/wake button and press & hold the home button. Hold until the red slider disappears.
If that didn't work, describe what constitutes "doesn't seem to work all the time". More details .....

  • Is it ok to leave Time Capsule on all the time?

    Hi
Is it ok in terms of the life of the hard drive to leave Time Capsule on all the time? I know it has to be on to run the wireless back ups and for the Wi-Fi to work but i have heard quite alot of people saying that you should turn it off for a couple of hours occasionally.
Is this true and will that increase the TC life?
    Thanks

Yeah it definatly spins down but it does get super hot?
I thought that about no on/off switch.
    Thanks for the advice.
Ouch super hot.. that is not good.. the only one in my experience that did get super hot was gen1 with 1TB hitachi disk.. because it was just a very poor combination and the disk is extremely hot running.
The latest gen3 and gen4 should be warm.. maybe hot during a backup but certainly not what you would call super hot. In later ones, that is a sign all is not well with the power supply and it will fail. Even fixing the cooling at this stage the damage may already be done.
What gen is yours and how old? If it is outside of warranty I would take steps to keep it cooler. Not shutting down overnight... actually actively cooling it.
The most effective way is to force the fan on.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/apple-time-capsule-fan-mod
Placing fans outside the TC is useless unless you can seal it to the device and force air through it. blowing on the case will do nothing.
A better solution is to use an external power supply.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/cisco-adp-30rb-4pin-molex
That removes a lot of the waste heat load.
