Repeated Finder Crash
Hi,
I have a problem where Finder repeatedly crashes and relaunches, making my system unusable.
I was using my system, running mail, ical and safari. I ran the java script to uninstall SPSS (horrid software).
The uninstall looked good, but then Finder crashed. Each time Finder relaunches, it crashes again. The other apps I had running were fine, I could continue to use them.
I quit all my apps and restarted my machine, however, on login the problem persists. Finder continually crashes and relaunches. In this situation I have no way of running any other apps.
Any help?
Thanks, James.
I am having the same problem, I have tried removing my finder plist, my sidebarplist, and a CM plugin.
none of these things have helped. I will keep trying because there has to be a fix, other than reinstalling, I hope.

Finder crash when clicking on a folder
I am at a loss what to try on this problem. Since updating my MBP 2.3 ghz i5 to 10.7.5 I get a consistent and repeatable Finder crash every time i click on or attempt to open my Pictures folder. I have run Disk Utility from a recovery Drive as well as Disc Warrior. Neither found any errors. I have a back-up but I can't even select the folder to delete it as I crash the Finder if I even highlight it.
Any suggestions?

FInder crash when viewing Preferences folder
I am getting a repeatable Finder crash when scrolling through my User/Library/Preferences folder. This happens when in Column view. Finder does not crash when in Icon or List view. I did get one crash when in CoverFlow view, but it took a lot of scrolling back-and-forth to get the crash in that mode.
The accounts on this new iMac were migrated over from an older 2x2 G5 (10.3.9) Not sure if that would have any bearing on this problem, though.
Thanks,
Jimtry resetting finder preferences and removing the .DS_Store file for that folder.
close all finder windows and run the following terminal commands
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit'
rm ~/Library/Preferences/.DS_Store ~/library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to launch'

Intel based iMac using OS 10.6.8: finder crashes repeatedly.
My finder crashes repeatedly. When this happens, I can't open folders on the desktop with a double click and I can't open a new finder window. I have to force quit the finder and relaunch. I loose list view in all my windows; they revert to icon view.
I have cleared caches and done and archive/reinstall. Problem still exists.
Any suggestions?Linc,
Here's the info you requested: Console Messages from last crash this morning followed by latest Diagnostic report (the latest one is dated 6/9 but it was the same problem). I apologize if I've included extraneous info. I can't read these reports well enough to know what I'm actually sending!

Finder crashes repeatedly under Snow Leopard
So, after updating to Snow Leopard from Leopard, I've got a problem with my Finder. Here's the deal...
Mac Mini, Intel Core Duo, 1.83ghz, 2gb
With Firefox 3.5 as the only active app, my Finder will crash while dragging files (jpg, pdf, flv) from 1 folder to another. It's not repeatable in any reliable way and doesn't always occur. I'd say 1 time out of 10 - 15 the Finder will crash and restart.
I've repaired permissions, cleaned all caches with Snow Leopard Cache cleaner, deleted Library/Preferences/com.apple.Finder.plist to no avail. Thought it may have been a third-party Quicklook generator left over from Leopard so I deleted the 2 generators which seemed relevant (folder.QLgenerator, flv.QLgenerator), restarted, still crashing.
Other potentially pertinent info... Have the latest version of Perian installed, problem occurs with or without Firefox being active.
I've pasted the crash long from a typical event. If anyone could help me decipher where to look I'd be eternally grateful (or at least really happy...). Thanks in advance for the help.

cr2: 0x00000261Hello All:
After reading many of the posts here and elsewhere in the discussions, I thought I'd add my own experience because nothing I've read sounds quite this bizarre. I installed Snow Leopard 3 days ago an everything seemed to be working fine. That lasted about 48 hours. Yesterday, I was copying the first CD of an audiobook, and the program froze. I restarted the computer and at the desktop, there was a Finder crash report (send to Apple). Before I could punch the button, the Finder attempted to relaunch, and another report came up. And another. And another. I'm not sure if the reports went to Apple, but as you'll see, if they did, Apple knows me pretty well by now.
I got the Shutdown panel to come up while this was going on and shut the computer down. When I rebooted, the same thing happened. So I started up from the Snow Leopard Install disk and ran Permission repair and Disk repair. Both showed no problems needing repair. Rebooted. Same thing.
The process was really fast. In the time it took me to shut down, 8 or 10 relaunches and 8 or 10 crash reports. So I started up from Disk Warrior, Snow Leopard version, rebuilt the directory and and checked all the files. No anomalies. Rebooted, and the same thing happened.
Of course, in my zeal to make this horror go away, I had completely forgotten about Safe Boot. So I did that, and went to the Preferences folder to toss com.apple.finder.plist. What a surprise. There were 30 or 40 (or maybe even 50) of those files, all except the most recent one suffixed with a number (example: com.apple.finder.plistx37g8d0 - that's not one of the real numbers). (I'm sure a Unix person could probably quickly explain this, but I thought it was one of the strangest things I've ever seen. It does seem clear that Finder was making a new plist every time it tried to relaunch. But it wasn't deleting any of the old ones.)
So I scrolled through screen after screen, selected and deleted them all. Rebooted and the computer came back. More or less. Now I seem to be experiencing random crashes, especially QuickLook when I'm in the middle of Spotlight. Also, some other crashes with names I don't even recognize because (I'm guessing) I'm not supposed to know they exist. Today those crashes seem to be slightly fewer (but not completely absent). And there were absolutely no crashes for the first 48 hours I used the new operating system. All my third party software was updated before I installed Snow Leopard.
I guess I'm not really asking for advice (but it would be appreciated, none the less). I could reinstall Snow Leopard, but from what I've read in the forums, that often does not seem to help very much. Even though, on this computer, I won't be able to enjoy 64-bit goodness, there are reasons I really don't want to go back to Leopard. First, the new system has things I like - upgrade to Automator, which I use a lot, new Services and others. Second, and more importantly, at least 2 of the third party apps I use a lot have revised upward to 10.6 only. So I guess I'll wait and hope for the best. But I must say, in 20 years of using Macs I've never come across anything quite this strange.
Sorry to bore you all by being so long-winded, but I thought that if anyone else ran into this weird situation, they might enjoy knowing they aren't the only ones.

Finder crashes (repeatedly)
I upgraded to 10.5.1 this morning and since the following restart, finder crashes every time it's trying to start. The shiny "application running mark" under Finder's icon in the dock lights up for about half a second and then goes off again for about 5 secs.
In the system log (/var/log/system.log) these lines are added after each crash:
Nov 17 16:24:37 Jarnis-Power-Mac-G5 com.apple.launchd[98] ([0x0-0x816816].com.apple.finder[3461]): Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault

I've tried using Disk Utility to repair permissions. I get a bunch of warnings like these:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
but as far as I can gather, that's a common problem and may be entirely unrelated.
I can start other programs from the Dock or a terminal but a few things are wierd with some of them:
Choosing Save causes the apps to crash (at least with BBEditLite, TextEdit and TextWrangler)
Directory Utility won't let me authenticate (password box never shows when clicking the button) so I can't enable root user.
Weirdest of all: I can't boot from the 10.5 install DVD: after trying to boot for a while the apple logo is replaced with a white "ring with line through it" and after another while the system just reboots.
Does anyone have any suggestions worth trying? I'd really like not having to reinstall the system again, even if I find a way to successfully start from the DVD.
Thanks in advance
YarnishI guess I'm behind the curve a bit... but these events are exactly why I'm still running 10.4.11... unfortunately I just received a brand new iMac 2.8 GHz... worked for a day and I copied my home folder from my MacBook Pro to the iMac and everything was fine. Today Finder started crashing when accessing content in my home folder, then progressively getting worse would crash when accessing the home folder at all and finally trying to launch Finder at all.
I've repaired Permissions and NOTHING... Spotlight works fine and I can open things there but it seems Finder is bleeding and I can't stop it.
Any help is appreciated! -
Finder crashes when I try to access my Airport disk
I updated my MacBook from Leopard to Snow Leopard yesterday. I have a 1TB WD My Book External hard drive connected via USB to my Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n). I use time machine to back up to the hard drive and also have additional archive files stored on it.
Everything worked fine with Leopard. However, ever since I installed Snow Leopard, the finder crashes every time I try to access folders within the root of my external hard drive. Once it crashes, the finder will then relaunch itself and continue to crash and relaunch until I close the window.
If I click on a shortcut to a folder located on the hard drive, it works fine. As long as I do not navigate back to the root of the hard drive, I'm able to open any file or folder without the finder crashing.
Originally, when I installed Snow Leopard, I did an update from Leopard. After this problem started, I performed a clean install, but the problem still exists. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Finder crashes occur both on my MacBook Pro (4,1) and MacBook Air (2,1). There is very little in common between the hardware of the two systems except the Santa Rosa processor. One has HDD and the other SSD. One has 6GB in DDR2 memory in two dimms and one 2GB DDR3 soldered. One has an 8600M and one a 9400. One starts a bunch of apps at login and one starts nothing. And so on. Since it happens on different kinds of systems, it's definitely not a hardware problem with certain specific hardware. And I'm pretty sure I saw a report from someone with a MacPro.
I've looked at a lot of finder crash logs. A number of them seem to happen when something (memory or an object) is being freed and an error occurs. This causes an abort and the finder is killed and restarts. Not exactly a "crash". More like controlled flight into the ground. The other cases are probably not catching the error and getting seg faults, so those actually are crashes. Unfortunately, the place this happens seems to be different every time but usually related to finder or AppKit.
I suspect a memory corruption bug somewhere. I've pushed my system by opening and closing
folders, scrolling up and down, and opening and closing subfolders, and once the problem happens, it is usually reproducible for a few minutes (or a few repeats of the action that caused the crash).
Then it will often "magically" start working or a slight variation of behavior, e.g., opening a folder directly vs. using a finder window sidebar alias (or vice-versa) will work. -
Finder crashes when I try to access airport extreme 2tb
As of this afternoon when I try to access my airport extreme 2TB through Finder, Finder either crashes or becomes unresponsive. Any ideas why?

Finder crash when opening any Folder
I am a very experienced mac user and this one has me stumped. Im posting here to see if anyone else has this problem.
Finder crashes when opening a folder on the desktop
Finder crashes when using any option from the Go menu (or key combo) except Airdrop.
Once Finder window is open on Airdrop any navigation to home folder or any other folder using side bar causes Finder to crash.
Using Go To Folder causes crash, even on hidden folder like /var
Finder is OK when opening files on desktop
All other apps can browse file system and open/save OK
Google Drive is not present on system (this used to be an issue a long time a go that caused similar symptoms in other threads)
Drop Box is installed. But issue occurs even when dropbox is not running
Using spotlight to open applications still works normally.
Clicking the Finder icon in the Dock results in a non-functional blank window entitled "Window", all tool buttons are disabled.
Repeatedly opening the same folder over and over results in the message "The last time you open Finder, it unexpectedly quite while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself" Two options "Don't Reopen" and "Reopen". Both buttons have no effect except to dismiss the dialog.
Steps Taken to fix:
Booted into recovery mode and performed repair disk and Permissions - Finder Still Crashes
Removed finder preference files using terminal
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Recent changes to system:
iTunes 11.4 Installed with normal Software Update.
Possible Cause of Problem
Found app in iTunes that has File Sharing enabled and has a shared folder. Curious as to what was in the folder i dragged it to my desktop and double clicked. Im not sure if iTunes would have had enough time to copy the contents of the folder before i tried to open the folder. Finder crashed. This was the first time it happened.
iPhone app in iTunes that I picked in was "Ubersense".1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Finder crashing when in Cover Flow view
I installed Leopard a few days ago and have noticed that whenever Finder is on Cover Flow view, it crashes and restarts. This happens at least 50% of the time but only in this view mode. In the other 3 view modes, it is stable.
Has anyone else experienced this?I have noticed that many JPG files do not show preview icons or coverflow views on my system (many do, many don't 50-50?). I tried launching a JPG file and Preview launched, but no file, then Finder crashed (desktop and all) and reloaded. I repeated this several times with different JPG files. Same thing with Quick View (caused a crash).
The other issue I've had is with the photo screen savers. They play through once then quit, or don't work at all. I can no longer use my picture catalog for a screen saver with Leopard.
I've just rebuilt my Spotlight index... maybe that will help?

Finder crashes when clicking on Applications folder
VERY weird. Beginning a few days ago the finder on my Mac Pro crashes whenever I clicked on the Applications folder. It makes no difference what finder view I am using (icons, columns, etc.). Even if I click on the alias to the Applications folder in the sidebar, the finder crashes. I cannot view the contents of that folder by any method. The only way I can get to an item contained therein is to search for it using Spotlight.
Thinking that maybe my startup disk was hosed somehow, I ran Disk Utility (repaired permissions and verified the disk) and ran all tests within TechTool Deluxe. Both said the disk and filesystem were fine.
I tried copying the entire folder to another disk, but the copy aborts after the first few items (stops with Adobe Photoshop; the next item alphabetically is Aperture). In case Aperture was somehow a problem, I removed it (searched using Spotlight and then dragged it to the trash). No change in behavior.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to replicate the entire drive to another, newly reformatted drive and made that drive the startup disk. No change in behavior.
It sure seems that the issue has to do with some kind of file corruption (that CCC dutifully replicated) rather than a faulty drive, but I have no idea where to look next for a solution (other than reformatting and reinstalling over 100 applications from scratch; ugh).
Does anyone have any idea what may be going on here? Until I can fix this, the Mac Pro is pretty much useless (luckily, I also have a MacBook Pro).Hi - I too am having this issue.
When I click on any of the items in my sidebar (i.e. -desktop, documents, applications, etc...) this causes the finder to crash and restart.
I have tried trashing the com.apple.finder.plist and running disk utility but to no avail. I also found this other forum discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1336291?start=0&tstart=0) Where this was part of the post

Re: finder crashes when clicking desktop icon in sidebar - any help?
Feb 2, 2008 3:43 PM (in response to choegl)
choegl, that crash is the same place as andreas's but it got there in a different manor. In the manor I would expect it to. It is trying to retarget the window to your selection in the sidebar and setup List View according to the view options for that folder from that folder's .DS_Store. Its specifically trying to get the label for one of the columns in List View (i.e. Size or Name or Date Modified) but the value it gets from the .DS_Store is corrupt/bogus and causes the Finder to crash (specifically a component underneath the Finder call CoreFoundation via a call to CFStringGetLength). Here's how you solve your problem. In /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app type: +cd <path to problem folder>+
+rm .DS_Store+
+killall Finder+ Pressing return after each line. You can get the path to the problem folder by drag/dropping the folder into the Terminal window. When the Finder comes back up, see if it still crashes when you click on that problem folder (i.e. your Desktop) in the sidebar. Repeat the steps above for any other folders that behave this way when you click on them in the sidebar. Hope that helps everyone...
btw, I wrote up a bug report on your behalf about this issue and sent it off to Apple (# 5721669)."
I tried this as well and nothing!
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm at a loss and am hating this issue! BTW, if I right click on any of the items in the sidebar, I can then click on open to get the folder to open. HASSLE! and if I forget (which is likely since I move too fast for my own good) then I crash the finder. Also, this happens on all the users on my mac.
Thanks!!!!
Matthew

OS 10.4.7 finder crashing every second
I have the console log and a witness, for those who think I am hallucinating.
Last night this happened twice. Firefox crashed, and took a couple of open applications with it. Rapidly, the finder crashed, opened again, crashed, opened again, rinse and repeat, the remaining open applications crashed, and the finder opened and crashed repeatedly approximately every second. It was like a slow strobe light. I watched in amazement for a while then powered it off. The apps that phone home and report crashes crashed too, but all crashes were written to the console log (I haven't checked the app logs themselves yet.)
My son went back to what he was doing, to apologize to the friends he was chatting to, and the whole thing happened again. We powered off and I declared it bed time.
I started in safe mode this morning and it is OK so far.
My son thinks the trigger for the initial crash was MSN web messenger running on Firefox and using Japanese language.
Isn't OS X designed so that when an application crashes that is the only one that crashes and other applications and the system itself are protected? What could be going on here? While my son is waiting for his PC to come back from the repair shop, should I let him chat with his Japanese friends on my Mac or ban him?
Pam
(P.S. I have good reasons to use Firefox not Safari, but that is a different topic.)I'm glad there is someone else out there who has seen this. I was worried I would have no cred at all. My son is studying software engineering, and has studied computer science, and stresses his PC to the max when gaming, and he has never seen any computer anywhere crash like that.
If he asks to use my Mac again, I will make sure all the Japanese fonts are enabled (I have hundreds of fonts, so won't enable them all).
Add to the weird stuff: an iCal alarm reminding me to put out the garbage stayed open and I was able to close it even with the finder flashing on and off like that. My garbage note was the only thing that survived. -

I did not have a dolly drive nor this fix works http://www.macambulance.co.uk/mac-os-finder-stuck-crash-loop/Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to start the computer in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the crashing.
Similar cloud-data clients such as "Dolly Drive," "iDrive," "Open Drive," "Transporter Desktop," and others can cause the same problem. -
Finder crash when I control click on desktop or file - help please
Hi all,
My finder crashes when I control click on desktop or any file in a folder/directory. Do I have a preferences file that went bad or something? I already ran FSCK.
Thanks for the help.
MitchI had the same problem and I found the fix, thanks to Francine on your post:
I went into "/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items" and into "/Library/Contextual Menu Items". I archived the contents of each, dropped the archives onto the desktop (in case I wanted them again) and trashed the contents of those 2 folders. Restarted and everything worked great getting the contextual menus up again on Finder items using Control-Click. I then replaced the appropriate archive into the "/Library/Contextual Menu Items", unarchived it (hoping to find the culprit item) and trashed the archive, restarted and again all worked fine again. I then repeated the process with the "/Users/yourname/Library/Contextual Menu Items" folder and again restarted and again everything worked fine! So found no culprits and the contextual menus work as they always did before the problem.
Hope this helps. PaulWR. -
Finder Crashing When Opening Folders Containing JPEG Images
Here's my odd problem.
Finder seems to work okay until I open folders with certain JPEG images in them. Specifically, it seems to crash whenever I open a folder that has images taken with my old Oregon Scientific camera. It gets a little bit annoying, because once I open the folder, Finder crashes... and then it re-launches, +with the problem window still open+... which causes it to crash immediately upon re-opening. And then it re-launches again, again with the same window open, which causes it to crash again, and on and on into the night.
Incidentally... these images also seem to crash Preview. I never had any problem with this before. They worked fine under 10.5, they worked fine under 10.4... they even work fine on OS9. I've tried turning off icon previews, I've tried list view and icon view and coverflow and all that, and it crashes every single time.
If I use GraphicConverter to re-save the images WITHOUT the EXIF data, then Finder seems to be okay. But considering I have nearly a thousand images that were taken with that (decidedly unsophisticated) camera, it's really an inconvenience to convert every single one. On top of it, I'd kind of like to keep my EXIF data where it is.
I'm really kind of starting to regret not waiting for 10.6.1 before installing, because I've encountered problem after problem... and my fiance's iMac is almost unusable, it's so buggy. Most of the issues I've encountered I can live with, at least long enough for Apple to release an update... but this Finder issue is killing me, because I can't even access my photos.
Anyone have this same issue, or some idea of how to fix it?I've duplicated this behavior on both my MacBook and my fiance's iMac, which are both running 10.6. With my 10.4-enabled G4 and iMac G3, there's no problems.
I think I've at least figured out the actual cause. I just opened a folder of pictures taken with my Oregon Scientific DShot II camera, and it didn't crash the Finder, nor did it kill Preview. The EXIF data was intact. The difference was that with these images, I'd edited them and re-saved with GraphicConverter when I first took them.
After repeating the tests with some other pictures, I think that the problem isn't so much with the EXIF data as it is with the +preview image+. The DShot II camera saves some kind of a preview image (which isn't very good). When I edited these images with GraphicConverter, the application added it's own custom preview, overwriting the original.
For some reason, Finder (and Preview, though I don't know why) handle GraphicConverter's preview image, but can't seem to be able to deal with the preview image that the DS2 embedded into the image. Why this should change with 10.6, when all previous versions of the software worked perfectly fine, I have no idea.
