Replace Bordermanager

Hi!
I am thinking about to replace the bordermanager with another firewall, does Novell have another product that replaces bordermanager ?
The Astaro project is not supported by Novell any more if I have understood it right?
Is there any other Firewall that is Edirectory 8.8 aware .... that you can recommend.
For a School with 120 computers and a couple of servers.

Look into Fortigate. I went for 224B and I am amazed how good the product is for the money (and it was little money after all, if one considers that the whole unit & webfiltering for a year was less than HALF the price what Mcaffee wanted to charge me for Smart Filter Bess Edition!
And the product can do LOTS with just few clicks.
I loved BM for years, but to achieve something with BM was always a restart of this or that, maybe the whole server, something would abend, start again etc
OK, got better with 3.9 SPx to be honest...
Now few clicks, all live, no crash and even if needed ie firmware upgrade the whole FTG restart is less than 2 minutes & nobody notices
Integrates with eDirectory perfectly, uses Fortinet Server Authentication Extension (FSAE) which works just like clntrust, and allows everything that I could never get fully working with BM itself (like load balancer, which needed to be a separate kit)

BorderManager 3.8 on NetWare 5.1 - I have plenty of successful
ftp-port-pasv-st exceptions that I use, but now I need one for an
FTPS/Implicit SSL connection, which *should* user port 990. But when I
define an exception (creating a new packet type, TCP, All source ports to
990, stateful) I'm able to connect, but I cannot browse folders or transfer
files. For grins I even tried making an exception for ALL TCP ports from my
FTP PC to their server - oddly, that wouldn't allow me to connect at ALL.
Drop filters, and I can get it to work just fine. I would do a TCPIP DEBUG =
0, but when I do that, BorderManager usually crashes now, and last time it
crashed, it would immediately abend on reboot, and it took me 4 hours to
    crawl out of this hole.
I just recently got brave enough to make new filters again (it was making
them all disappear every time I made a change for the longest time).
Anyone have any experience with this form of FTP? I've done FTP of course,
SFTP, and other secure FTP transfers, but this is the first vendor who want
FTPS/Implicit SSL, which I understand is not nearly as prevalent as Explicit
    SSL.
    Thanks,

The problem here is that each time you do a directory listing or try
to upload/download a file in FTP protocol you are using a passive
client connection. With each passive connection the server assigns a
port that the client should connect to for initiating the transfer.
Unless you specify a port range to use within the FTP server software,
this is generally a random open port on the server > 1024. Naturally,
this can make configuring your firewall a bit more difficult :( The
solution to this is to configure your server to use a fixed port range
for passive FTP connections e.g. 1200-1300. Then in your firewall you
can configure it to allow inbound connections on these ports. Most
servers support passive port range configuration. see your server
docs for details on how to do this. One such platform-independent
server that supports this is jscape secure ftp server ...
    http://www.jscape.com/secureftpserver/
    Hope this helps.

  • BorderManager - Where do we go from here ?

    Good Afternoon,
I have recently been experiencing some problems with our BorderManager Server, which has kicked off some debate about what to do now that BM is reaching it's projected End Date for General Support.
I would like to pose the question to all that read this, "What are you going to do to replace BroderManager, and what features of BorderManager are you finding hardest to replace ?
My main concern here is the caching proxy feature for external web sites, however the question is preposed for all features.
    Thank you, Tony

I've lost the hope that Novell will move to produce something
interesting. The questions that now raise are the following:
How to migrate (tools or restart from scratch)
    When migrate
    Where to migrate
--->>> If anyone has tools for migration would be nice!
My favorite is an open source solution iptables and squid (things I use
from Bordermanager). With these solutions I'm no more anxious to get an
    EOS /EOL.

  • BorderManager Cluster problems

I have set up a 2 node NW 6.5 SP8 cluster to run BorderManager 3.9 SP2. I don't have a 'Split Brain Detector' (SBD) partition; the servers only monitor each other through the LAN heartbeat signal that is being sent by the master and replies by the slave. This has worked well from a high availability perspective but I keep running into a situation where both nodes will go 'active'.
Usually, I have Node 0 set as both the cluster master and the host of the NBM proxy resource. Node 1 is then in standby - ready to load the proxy service and assume the proxy IP address if node 0 dies. At some point (the time is variable in days 2 - 5 and doesn't seem to be related to network load) Node 0 will think that Node 1 has failed and will show that on the Cmon console. Shortly afterwards Node 1 will think that Node 0 has failed and bind the proxy IP and cluster master IP and load the proxy. At this time I have two servers; both with the same Cluster Master IP bound and the proxy IP bound and proxy.nlm loaded!
I can access Node 0 through rconj and it appears to be working fine. If I do a 'display secondary ipaddress' I can see it has both the proxy IP and Cluster Master IP bound to it. The same thing is the case for Node 1. I unload the proxy on Node 0 and reset the server. When it comes back up, it joins the cluster just fine and there doesn't appear to be any other problem.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? (Craig???)
    thanks,
    Dan

This sounds familiar, except for me it happens within hours.

Yep. Gets annoying, to say the least!

    Yep.
    >
    > Has anyone else seen this behavior? (Craig???)
I have definitely fought this issue, but only on one (of many) BM cluster.
Both nodes of the cluster are on old servers, and when the proxy is
active, it is exceptionally busy. (More than 2000 users, and plenty of LAN
bandwidth). I was on site at the client working on this (and a lot of
other projects) and I never was able to get to the bottom of it. The fact
that the server was so busy (24x7) made it hard to experiment on. My hope
at this point is to get decent newer hardware in there to replace the
    7-year old nodes.
This happened when one server was BM 3.8 and the other BM 3.9, but it
continued to happen when I upgraded both to 3.9sp2. It also happened even
though I moved the heartbeat to dedicated nics with a crossover cable.
I'm thinking that something causes the LAN drivers to hiccup long enough
for the server to stop responding to heartbeat - but the proxy seems to
work continuously without showing a 30-second pause anywhere.
For the time being, I've left the oldest node not loading cluster
services. It's a manual failover at this time, but that's better than
nothing. (And the primary node is quite stable anyway, for months and
    months at a time).

Aside from the lack of ClientTrust that's already been mentioned, is there any sign of any VPN capability in this product? Does it do the reverse proxy acceleration that NBM does? While I am very excited to hear there will be an additional two years of support, we will probably use the time to pick a product that will cover more of what we use NBM for than just the proxy. (As others have said, might as well use squid if it's just a proxy....)

  • Best way to replace DNS Proxy

I've always run BorderManager's DNS Proxy for our internal DNS server. It works great due to it checking the hosts file first before forwarding the DNS request to the Internet. So, I'd put all of the servers and their internal IP address in the hosts file and point all the workstations at the BorderManager server for DNS.
Now, I need to replace that same functionality with something else. Preferably something that will run on SLES 11 or OES2.
I'm not experienced with BIND or any other DNS server. Do other products reference the local hosts file first or was that something unique to BorderManager?
    All suggestions greatly appreciated!

  • Can BorderManager cooperate with Webroot Desktop Web Proxy

    Hello All,
I'm moving to Webroot's Web Security Service to provide my web filtering and what-not since there is no longer a Surf Control option...
In order for the service to run on one of my PC's, I need to install the "Desktop Web Proxy" which will communicate with Webroot's servers to determine whether or not a user is allowed access to the particular site they are visiting...
The problem is that this Web Proxy cannot communicate with Webroot and I think its my current Bordermanager Proxy config that is stopping it...
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Can (and how can) I remove the Bordermanager Proxy so that my workstations can access the Internet directly?
I heard that I may need to chain the proxy to their datacenter, but I cannot find anything in the settings to allow this... any ideas?
    Thanks everyone.

Another option is to get LinkWall to replace Surfcontrol. (Much
cheaper, and it allows many more categories).
I suspect your BorderManager filters are blocking http traffic to the
Webroot site. A custom exception should be made to allow port 80 to
that site IP address. (You can test by unloading filters with unload
    ipflt).

  • DR BorderManager

We are trying to set up a BorderManager server to replace an existing
one in the event of a failure. Since authentication (Client Trust) is
not needed, we set up a server in it's own tree. We installed NetWare
using the same IP addresses as the existing BorderManager (keeping it
off the network). Added all the secondary IP Addresses, 1-to-1 NATs and
routing information. Next we installed BorderManager 3.8 and selected
HTTP and IP Packet Filtering Services. Patched to SP5 and verified
filters. Deleted the filters (in NWAdmin), cleared filters (filtsrv
-cf), unloaded filtsrv, copied the filters.cfg from the existing
BorderManager to the DR one and loaded via filtsrv migrate filters.
We then bounced the server to ensure everything was OK, checked the
filters (via filtcfg) and all the IP settings (via inetcfg). Then
unplugged the Private and Public cables for the existing BorderManager
and plugged the DR BorderManager cables in. HTTP proxy worked fine, but
GWIA (and the MTA) could not connect with the outside. I was able to
telnet to another GWIA (on port 25) so it would appear that outbound was
OK. We dropped the filters and GWIA started working. Since we couldn't
keep the DR BorderManager online for too long, we had limited
troubleshooting time. And came up with nothing... So back the the
original BorderManager and everything still works.
    What did we miss???

Secondary IP addresses and NAT setup is exactly the same as the original
BorderManager. We wanted to keep the server out of the tree so there
would be no licensing issues and there really was no good reason for
having it in the tree anyway. Additionally, the DR server would not be
powered on normally so we didn't want to create DS problems.
Clustering is not an option and all NATs were set up on the primary
public IP address. And I was able to telnet through the DR server to
    another sites GWIA.
Thanks for the response, any other ideas?

  • Remove BorderManager 3.8

    Hello,
We replaced our BorderManager with another Firewall.
I unloaded the proxy and removed the startup for Bordermanager from Autoexec.ncf
But now we get a license check from Novell (LMcheck), and they want us to pay for BorderManager.
I removed BorderManager from NWconfig, but LMcheck still sees leftovers.
Can i simply delete every object in ConsoleOne that relates to Bordermanager ?
Like al objects "Novell+Bordermanager ...." and NBMRule Container ?

Bordermanager is licensed byamount of users benefiting from it, which
isn't technically measurable. YOu tell them you're not using BM, and
    that's it.

    2. NOWS SBE 2.5 (Suse) - DNS\DHCP

  • Error while creating a Characteristic Variable with Replacement Path

    Hi all,
I am trying to create the Characteristic Variable ZVLOWDT (Low Date') with Replacement Path on characteristic ZSTARTDT (Start Date) and it gives the error 'Source to replace 'Low Date' is not defined.
I have created a User Entry Variable VAR_DATE (Start Date) with interval like '01/01/2009 - 01/15/2009'  and  Customer Exit variable ZVCPDAY (does some calculation based on the input of VAR_DATE) on the same ZSTARTDT characteristic. I want to get the 01/01/2009 (lower range date of the selection) into this Characteristic Variable ZVLOWDT. We are in BI 7.0 and the following are it's properties:
    General Tab:
    Description: Low Date
    Technical Name: ZVLOWDT
    Type of Variable: Characteristic Value
    Processing by: Replacement Path
    Reference Characteristic: ZSTARTDT Start Date
    Details Tab:
    Variable Represents : Single value
    Variable is: Mandatory
Variable is Ready for Input : unchecked
    Replacement Path Tab: Replacement Rule
    Replace Variable with : Variable
    Variable : VAR_DATE
    Replace with : KEY
Why I am getting this error, PLEASE ?
    Thanks,
    Venkat.

    Hi Khaja,
We could derive a Variable value from another Variable with out Customer Exit. There is a white paper.
First have the User Entry Variable (ZV_X) and it accepts the date range like '01/01/2009 - 01/31/2009'. Next create the Characteristic variable (ZV_Y) of Replacement Path for which source variable will be ZV_X and we could get the 'FROM Date' (01/01/2009) from the selection (ZV_X) into it (ZV_Y).
While creating the Characteristic variable (ZV_Y) of Replacement Path, I didn't find my newly created ZV_X variable in the list of available variables under 'Variable' header in 'Replacement Path' tab and it is causing the error  'Source to replace variable ZV_Y is not defined'. How could I create the Characteristic variable of Replacement Path, PLEASE ?
    Thanks,
    Venkat.

  • HT1423 I am adding more memory, should I replace the top two slots with the 4g memory modules, then place 2g memory modules on bottom slots. Does it even matter?

  • Time machine won't back up since I have restored from time machine following hard drive replacement.  I am being told there is not enough space, however the back up is less than the hard drive size

We recently had the hard drive replaced on our Mac as part of Apple's replacement programme.  Prior to sending it off for repair we did a final Time Machine back up, which was completed successfully.  SInce getting the computer back we restored everything from the backup disk using Time Machine, which all worked fine, however now we are having problems with it completing regular backups.  We receive a message each time telling up that the backup disk doesn't have enough space on it.  It is telling us that it needs in the region of 370gb and only has around 30gb available.  The computer hard drive is in the region of 350gb and the hard drive is a 400gb one.  It is almost as if it is not recognising that the data already on the disk is the back up of this computer and is trying to complete a completely separate back up as opposed to just updating the backup already on the disk.
Has anyone else got any experience of this and therefore could give me some hints on what to do.  I am reluctant to wipe the backup drive and start again, however I would prefer not to have to buy another hard drive if I can avoid it as this one is technically big enough
I look forward to getting some responses

Hi, I never use TM myself.
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?
    http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

Can't imaging something not being covered there.
PS. It's generally recommended a TM drive be at least twice the size of your main drive.

  • I had an Intel-iMac fried by lightening. UPS, surge protectors but it happened as I was reaching to unplug.  Cold now.  Could it just be the power supply?  Can I replace that myself?

This is the full question since I couldn't get it all in the box.
I have some complex questions regarding an iMac, a Time-Machine backup, and iTunes on an iPod.
I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica.  Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house.  I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip.  There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes.
When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.
First questions:  Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts?  Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply?  Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician?  My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.
Next question:  Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service?  How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.
Those are my iMac questions, now the questions about backup restoration.
If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder.  I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook.  My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed.  I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that.  Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Quite possible, but working on iMacs is not easy, & PSU might be prohibitive.
Hopefully the Drive might have info on it, but even pulling that out can be a chore.
If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

I'd get an external drive & restore the whole works to it, then boot from the External drive.

  • I am going to get a replacement for my iphone 5C, for data connection issues. Can I get an 5S, instead of antother 5C as a replacement?

Hello, I have been having issues with my iPhone 5C for about a month now. I have unlimited everything, including data, & so randomly, starting about 2 weeks ago, my data basically does not work for any apps, besides like iMessage & Safari. So like if I have full LTE signal, I can try to open the Instagram app, and it will tell me "no internet connection", & it tells me that with ANY app, besides iMessage & Safari. Which is super frustrating, especially when I try to use like Maps or something & it jut does not load, & tells me that "there is not an internet connection", so I have to use apps & stuff only on wifi, in order for them to work. I went to the Sprint store, and had them try and update the data profile, reset data network, soft reset, etc (they basically did everything that I did), & they could NOT figure out what was wrong with my phone. So, they looked into my warranty information, and told me to take my phone to the Apple Store, and just get a replacement & that it would cost me only $50, since it is still covered under warranty. I am not up for an upgrade until April of 2016, & as far as I know, when it comes to replacements, Apple will either give me a new/refurbished iPhone 5C as a replacement. I don't really mind having to pay a little extra if I have to, in order to get a 5S , & I also don't care if the 5S would be either new or refurbished. So, my question is, could I maybe get a 5S as a replacement, instead of another 5C?
