Replacing system library

Is there a way to replace only the system library?
For about the last year or so, whenever I open MS Office it gives me an error message about the system library. Since the program then went on to work fine, I just ignored the message. I recently installed Mathematica, and it's giving me an error message about not being able to create a library. It then quits.
Since the library is mentioned in 2 separate problems, I'm worried that it may be corrupt
thanks

Third-party applications do not use the /System/Library/ folder. Changes to the folder require "root" user access. The admin user does not have direct "root" user access, so a third-party application would need specific intervention on the part of an admin user to modify the /System/Library/ folder. Instead an application may use the /Library/ folder or the /Home/Library/ folder depending upon whether access will be for all users or only the currently logged in user.
So without any specific information on the exact error message and the conditions under which it was issued, we are unable to assist you. All that you might do at this point is to repair your hard drive and permissions. If that doesn't help then reinstall the affected software.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

So I am new to the forum and would like some helpful (non-snobbery) advice regarding my iMac. I am currently working on an iMac G5 - 1.8 GHz PowerPD G5, equipped with 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM. I've just cleaned up the hard disk and installed Leopard. Here is my dilemma:
The machine has been performing VERY SLUGGISH. Even with 1.5 GB RAM. It has been used in the past to run some CAD software (Lightwave), but I've since uninstalled it. I primarily use this computer for print design and run CS2 on it. For the most part, I work primarily in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and occasionally work with large (150 - 500 MB) image files for large format applications. I understand this will hog a considerable amount of RAM and it typically does. However, even with smaller image and graphic files (10 - 100 MB), the machine creeps along at snail speed.
I cleaned up an almost exhausted Hard Disk, installed the new OS, and have done all my current software updates. Additionally, I've ran the Disk Utility and Repaired Disk Permissions to find only one real issue. Here is the log from that scan:

So in conclusion, I am at a loss as to why the machine is so **** slow. Anyone have any ideas? I'm not much of an IT dude, so I've pretty much exhausted my knowledge of this issue. Thanks!
    ~Macincrotch

I have no suggestions but like you I would love answers. Phone support gets me nowhere except 75 minute hold times. I am so disappointed with Apple. In one year, on a single machine, I have had 2 logic boards replaced (as part of the lower RAM slot recall), a hard drive replaced, an optical drive replaced, two batteries replaced (as part of another recall) and a power cord replacement... now my computer is running worse than it has ever run before - thanks to the terrible Beta version of leopard that crapple crappled on us.
I too am getting the same error messages while running disc utility (which takes about an hour now - as applecare described to me, it is because the machine is having a hard time indexing the spotlight feature (??)). But I think they are benign messages and not to be worried about. I wonder if errors related to these messages are really why our machines are performing at the level of the Apple IIGS. What troubles me is the tremendously slow performance - applecare had no ideas and said its best to wait until the update is released. it seems they are still in information gathering phase using suckers like me who ponied up 150 dollars to be unknowing apple product testers. It takes about 30 minutes to edit an album in itunes with color wheels spinning incessantly. I did a clean install before upgrading. System preferences crashes, wireless network access spotty to nonfunctional, and the computer has at times spontaneously gone to sleep. I feel foolish for believing the applecare specialist when he told me 3 weeks ago that my broken HFS volumes, invalid leaf structures and a disc management tool that could not be located would be sorted out by installing leopard. maybe they should rename 10.5 from leopard to turtle.
The last year has been tiresome and costly because apple does not create or adequately support their products; I wont be recommending apple products to my students or have my students learn using them in my classrooms ever again.
if only my rant could fix my machine...

  • "/System/Library/Extensions/CDSDAudioCaptureSupport.kext"

Hello, I have this; "/System/Library/Extensions/CDSDAudioCaptureSupport.kext" How can I fix it from Terminal?
    Thank you!

Do you see the file in the location indicated?
Do you have a backup of your hard drive and can you find the component on it?
Sometimes running a Snow Leopard updater may  install the component if it has been updated since the original version of Snow Leopard.  In the end you may need to reinstall your operating system using your Snow Leopard installer disc. Alternatively you can extract individual components from an installer disc using the Pacifist utility.
Kappy: How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components - http://discussions.apple.com/message/9044169 and another https://discussions.apple.com/message/17864069
Before doing any of this I would boot from your installer disc and run Disk Utility to repair your hard drive.  Components should not just go missing and this may indicate more serious issues with your files.

  • I can't open .pkg files.  i get an error telling me to choose an application to open them.  the Installer app is not in my Utilities folder or in System/Library/CoreServices.

i can't open .pkg files.  i get an error telling me to choose an application to open them.  the Installer app is not in my Utilities folder or in System/Library/CoreServices.

Install the UnArchiver and try again.
    http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver
There is no Installer.app in the Utilities or Applications folder, there is one in the System/Library/CoreServices.
If yours is not there, then you need to:
1: Backup your data off the machine to a non-TimeMachine drive and disconnect all drives.
2: If you have TM, try to restore the Installer.app from the TM drive and reboot. See if things work.
If the above doesn't work, your going to have to re-install just OS X 10.6 (and bundled programs) from the disk by holding c and booting off the 10.6 disk and simply installing OS X. Then software updating to 10.6.8.
This will replace all bundled programs and OS X, not touch your files (backup regardless) and most third party programs.
Some third party programs will have to be reinstalled form original sources because they install Kext files into OS X and thus kicked out by the 10.6 reinstall form disk.
All should go well, however if you boot to a gray screen or other freeze, reboot holding the shift key down, then update all your third party software to be current to 10.6.8.
Another method is to re-install in to CoreServices the Installer.app from the 10.6 disk using the extraction program called Pacifist from CharleSoft, then running software update to get any updates for Installer.app.

Was updating at the App Store - Safari, iTunes, iWorks 09 and prior to that had updated something at Adobe's website.  Then this error message popped up:

(I  just received a refurbished computer with a new hard drive from a local Apple repair store...
Is this an easy fix.  Thanks, Charlotte

What I ended up doing is a reinstall the OS.
There was an important component I forgot to mention...my hard drive had crashed and I had it replaced.  When it was replaced - the old drive was copied to the new.  Since the prior error messages I had gotten from MemTest and CheckMate kept saying Bad Blocks in the drive - it was suggested that the corrupt or missing data on these "bad blocks" had not copied or copied incorrectly.
So only time will tell if this fixed this error.  (Don't have external hard drive so never had Time Machine set up to begin with.)  Original computer was refurbished and believe some things weren't done right from the get go.  Oh well...  Hope I didn't lead anyone astray.

  • Delete System/Library/Speech

I'm trying to free disk space on my iBook HD (so I can store photos during a trip). I've never used the speech synthesis or recognition software. The voices take up over 700MB. Is it safe to delete the Speech folder from the system library?
I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I searched and couldn't find anything.
    David

Never, ever delete, move, or rename any files installed by OS X. Doing so could render your operating system non-funtional. If you need more disk space then either buy an external drive and move your personal data files to it, delete unneeded personal files, or replace the internal drive with a larger drive.

  • Does reinstalling OS reset Libraries or System/Library?

Does reinstalling OS reset Libraries or System/Library?
I'm having some problems with the Java Liraries not being set up correctly or something. I've reinstalled SL to try and solve this problem, but I'm not sure if it's doing anything.
So does it reset the user's library or reset the system/library?
    Cheers

If you reinstall using an install disc and choose upgrade, it REPLACES all OS components, wiping out the current ones, and replaces generic Apple apps, such as TextEdit, Safari, Terminal, etc. It doesn't touch anything in the user's directory or network settings. To bring the apps and OS up to its latest version, install the latest COMBO update. Finally, run Software Update to get any missing items.

  • Any problem with replacing system true type fonts with postscript?

I want to replace the Times true type (d.font) font in the systems fonts folder with a Times Postscript font. Will this cause any problems? Are there any system true type fonts that can't be replaced with postscript fonts?

You should not deal with fonts inside /System/Library/Fonts/. Your system may not be able to boot!

I was asked to return the computer and receive a replacement which I did. They said the warning meant that there was a conflict somewhere within the hardware that could not be repaired (they tried).

  • Replacing System Sounds

To all those far smarter than I--
I'm looking to modify the way my Mac sounds, specifically the system sounds it utilizes. I've browsed to where I believe the system sounds are stored (\System\Library\Sounds\), and have noted the list of ".AIFF" files there. I've attempted to add my own files (".WAV" files), but when using the Sounds Preference pane my own files don't show up on the list. I assume I could simply replace the current default ".AIFF" files with identically named ".AIFF" files of my own creation, but I'd rather keep the old sounds in place and compliment the collection with my own sounds (though as I type the words I realize that's something of a paradox). So what I suppose I'm asking is the following--
    1. Am I even in the right folder?
    2. Will Panther simply never recognize any files outside of the default files? Or will it simply never recognize my ".WAV" files?
    3. Or is there a better way altogether to achieve the means that I'm shooting for?
I thank you for your time and troubles!
    Brian Jones

    Brian--
Am I even in the right folder?
"/System/Library/Sounds" is the right folder for you if you want your sounds to be available to every user on the computer. Otherwise, you can also put them in the "Sounds" folder in your user's Library in your own Home folder.
Will Panther simply never recognize any files outside of the default files? Or will it simply never recognize my ".WAV" files?
It will definitely recognize other AIFF files, so it's probably not going to recognize WAV files. Try downloading a sound converter of some kind and change the WAVs to AIFFs. One of these apps should do the trick.
You can name them pretty much anything you want, just make sure they have ".aiff" as the file extension.
    best,
    charlie

I know this question has been sort of answered but not properly in my opinion.
There should be no permissions to repair once they have been repaired.
There should also be no permissions that can't be fixed especailly by Apple.
    Many computers have seen this:
"System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAge nt" has been modified and will not be repaired."
To me this is not normal even though Apple may say it is.
Not all computers have this so why do some other computers show this problem?
I have fixed this on my computers as I can't stand to have things like this show up when they shouldn't.
I replaced the problematic ArdAgent by using a copy from another computer that did not have that warning.
Once, replaced, I got the message in Disk Utility when I repaired the permissions with this new one:
    Permissions differ for:
    System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgen t
should be "0" instead of 501 (or something like this)
Then it states those permissions were repaired.
Now I no longer get that stupid warning about the ARDAgent.
For those of you that want to get rid of that warning, try using a copy from another computer running the same system.
    Worked for me.
I also repaired a few other permissions that always kept coming back even though Disk Utility said they were repaired.
    Hogwash.
If it was repaired then the same exact ones wouldn't be coming back everytime you repair permissions.
In my mind, there should be no permissions to repair once they have been repaired.
Otherwise, they were not fixed or repaired in the first place.
I now no longer have any permissions to repair unless I may install something new that might need repair.
    Good luck with your mileage.
This is how Disk Utility should look like without any permissions to repair once you have repaired them one time, and one time, only.
    Clean bill of health.

  • MBP stuck to the spinning wheel, won't boot after deleting something from "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist"

    Hi all,
I have a MBP 13" (early 2011) running Lion 10.7.2 and some days before, I wanted to host an HTTP server on it.  I googled and found I should turn on "Web Sharing" for this feature.  But unfortunately, it just wouldn't start.  I googled again and found a solution (I think).  I tried deleting the disable key and
    <string>-D</string>
             <string>WEBSHARING_ON</string>
from "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist". I couldn't save the file because it is protected.  So I tried copying all the content of the file and save it to a new file with the same name, deleted the original file, and put the new one back to the directory.  Nothing worked.  I couldn't edit the new file as well.  So I put the original file back and replaced the new one.  Then I tried to change my rights of that directory as well as the file to "Read and Write".  And I managed to edit the file!  I deleted the mentioned sentences and saved it.  Then I tried turning Web Sharing on for about a hundred times, but never succeeded.  So I turned off my MBP and slept.  OK, the next day when I decided to try again, I found the machine won't boot!  It got stuck to the grey screen with Apple logo and a spinning wheel permanently.  Every time I needed to hold the power button for 4 seconds to turn it off.  I've tried SUM (command-S) and ran fsck, no problems were found.  I also tried the method from http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20809 , but still couldn't get past that grey screen.  Cannot boot into safe Boot also.  I don't if it is a problem related to the alias of that file because I had deleted it and put it back.  Please help.  Many thanks.
P.S. If can't solve it, should I bring it to Apple Store and ask for Genius?

    Hi,
Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.)  Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.
    Hope this helps,
    All the best,
    Brian

  • Messed with System/Library files now computer won't start

Ok, I wanted to go about fixing a Photoshop issue I had with 10.4.6. So I replace the following files with the files from 10.4.5...
    /System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare
    /System/Library/Frameworks/AppleShareClientCore.framework
    /System/Library/Frameworks/AppleshareClient.framework
My network drive went all haywire and I tried to replace the files with the original 10.4.6 files. After that did not solve the problem, I downloaded and used Pacifist to retreive the files from Mac OS X 10.4.6 for PPC downloaded from Apple. After replacing the /System/Library/ from this file, my computer went completely haywire and would not shutdown, start any aps or do anything. Now it won't work at all.
Am I completely screwed? I don't want to have to wipe everything (I have Quark on there that I no longer have a disk for) but I think I may have to.
Please if you have any suggestions for this stupid idiot, who should not have messed with their computer, they would be so welcomed!
    Thanks!
