Reporting on DSO - Use of Cube? Use of MP?

Hi experts, I would like to know your feedback and expertise on the following BI design based on my client's requirement:
I have lots of reports that should be launched straight with document-level information (eg PO number, PO line item number, etc ...).
For those, DSO should be the object to do reporting on. Note that large number of users will access this "operational view of data".
I have also some others reports where they should be opened to the user on "low" level view of data (e.g. Vendor code and total ordered amount) but having detailed free characteristics available for drill down such as PO number, requester, ...
For those, I think about using an Cube (e.g. for "aggregated" view of the vendor) but also the DSO mentionned above in case the user drill down the detailed characteristic in the report. This leads me of the use of multi provider on DSO + Cube.
I am not thinking to use RRI for the moment.
What do you think about this approach?
Having detailed free characteristics not displayed straight on the report could explain the use of the cube + DSO covered by a multi provider?
Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Wond, thank you for your fast reply.
I read a recommendation from SAP saying that storing mass data in cubes at document level is generally not recommended because when the data is loaded, a huge SID table is created for the PO number line-item dimension (as this should be created as dimension).
Also, my reports are more like operational reports for example:
**PO Number | Requester | Vendor | product category | Order amount**
I thought using a MP on a DSO + cube will "share" the performance issue of accessing document level data.
I am not sure what would be the best solution in terms of performance. We do not have really multi dimensions reporting needs. It is more like having report (for example by taking the described example above):
**Vendor | Order amount**
having PO Number, requester, product category as free characteristics ready to be drill downed...
What do you think ?
Thanks

  • Loading complex report data into a direct update DSO using APD

    Dear All,
Recently, I had a requirement to download the report data into a direct update DSO using an APD. I was able to perform this easily when the report was simple i.e it has few rows and columns. But I faced problems If the report is a complex one. Summing up, I would like to know how to handle the scenarios in each of the following cases:
    1.   How should I decide the key fields and data fields of the direct update DSO ? Is it that the elements in ROWS will go to the
key fields of DSO and the remaining to the data fields? Correct me.
    2.   What if the report contains the Restricted KFs and Calculated KFs? Do I have to create separate infoobjects in the BI
system and then include these in the DSO data fields to accommodate the extracted data ?
    3.   How do I handle the Free Characteristics and Filters ?
    4.  Moreover, I observed that if the report contains selection screen variables, then I need to create variants in the report and
use that variant in the APD. So, if I have 10 sets of users executing the same report with different selection conditions, then
shall I need to create 10 different variants and pass those into 10 different APDs, all created for the same report ?
I would appreciate if someone can answer my questions clearly.
    Regards,
    D. Srinivas Rao

    Hi ,
    PFB the answers.
    1. How should I decide the key fields and data fields of the direct update DSO ? Is it that the elements in ROWS will go to the
key fields of DSO and the remaining to the data fields? Correct me.
--- Yes , you can use the elements in the ROWS in the Key fields,  but in case you get two records with same value in the ROWS element the data load will fail. So you basically need to have one value that would be different for each record.
    2. What if the report contains the Restricted KFs and Calculated KFs? Do I have to create separate infoobjects in the BI
system and then include these in the DSO data fields to accommodate the extracted data ?
Yes you would need to create new Infoobjects for the CKF's and RKF's in the Report and include them in your DSO.
    3. How do I handle the Free Characteristics and Filters ?
The default filters work in the same way as when you yourself execute the reoprt. But you cannot use the Free characterisitics in the APD. only the ROWS and cloumns element which are in default layout can be used.
--- Yes you would need to create 10 different APD's. Its very simple to create, you can copy an APD. but it would be for sure a maintance issue. you would have to maintain 10 APD's.
Please revert in case of any further queries.

  • Why not reporting on DSO is better than Cube,DSO is more denormalized?

    Hi,
As it is said that for better reporting response, all dataware house solution are denormalized. Normalized tables take more time in executing report.
Then why not reporting on DSO is better than Cube?
Cube is said to have multidimensional structure. But DSO has more denormalized data than cube.
Please correct me..." Cube is not completely denormalized". It has links between fact table and dimension tables.
    Thanks !!

Cube reporting is the part of standrad datawarehousing design. Please read kimballs DWH books for more details.

in alv report can i use control break events? if no .whay?

    hi,
you can use control break statements in ALV report.
for example: if one PO is having more than one line item, that time you need to display PO only once.

I have already use Jasper Report. Thakns a lot for your suggestion. Now I think i have solved your problem...... View the code.. this code will not open the JasperViewer but from the background it will be printed and after calling the printing function you can save a data in the database ------------------------
    JasperReport jasperReport = JasperCompileManager.compileReport(jasperDesign);
Connection con = Database.getConnection(); // your database connection
            jasperPrint = JasperFillManager.fillReport(jasperReport, parameters, con);

  • How to load a selective request from PSA to DSO using DTP?

    Hi Gurus,
The PSA is having 3 requests, how to load the request number 2 from psa to DSO using DTP?
    Thanks
    SDP
Edited by: SDPSAP on Nov 15, 2011 7:58 PM

Let us say that requests are 1,2 and 3. 1 being the first one and 3 is the last one. Now you need to load request 2 in DSO from PSA.
    - create a Delta DTP
    - Tick "Only Get Delta Once"
    - Tick "Get One Request Only"
    - Untick "Reterive Until No More New Data"
    - execute the DTP, it will load request 1 to DSO
    - delete this request from DTP
    - execute DTP again, it will load request 2 to DSO; this is what you need.
If DSO is write optimized, you do not need to untick "Reterive Until no More New Data"; just execute the DTP, it will create 3 requests in DSO, delete first and last and you will get only 2 in DSO.
    I hope it helps.

  • How to get the Report Names which use a Folder in Discoverer Administrator?

    Hello All,
How could I get which Reports in discoverer Desktop are using a particular folder in Discoverer Administrator?
    Or
How to know which Discoverer Desktop Reports are being derived from a folder in Discoverer Administrator?
We have Oracle 9i DS installed and have a Custom Folder Created in the Administrator, and want to know exactly which Reports/Workbooks are using that folder?
    Thanks in advance :)

    Well Abhijit,
The eul workbooks have been created by oracle specifically to analyze your eul and make your work easier!. So, I prefer this way to view the information about my eul in a report format in the desktop. Try it! you may like it.
If you want you can follow these steps:
Run the script called eul5.sql located in <discoverer_installation_path>\discoverer\util in the user who own the eul in the database.
Then import the eul5.eex file located at <discoverer_installation_path>\discoverer\ in the discoverer administrator.
Then login into desktop and open the reports in the database, you can see a report called[b] EUL Workbook Management. Open that and goto the sheet named Workbook Dependency - Folders & Items Lookup. I think it the last but one worksheet in that workbook.
    Hope it helps you!

When Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is enabled, using the ActiveX control to print reports from a Crystal 10 DHTML viewer results in the following error message:
"A communication error occurred, printing will be stopped."
How can this error message be resolved?
    Resolution
This is a known issue with Crystal Reports 10 and Crystal Enterprise 10 viewers and has been tracked. The Track ID is ADAPT00282199.
This error occurs due to the receiving application performing a case-sensitive check for the HTTPS request header value "ON". When a sender application sends the value as "on" in lower case, the error occurs. The update below changes the receiving application to be case-insensitive.
Hot Fixes or Service Packs address this issue as indicated below. With the updates, this issue is resolved.
Unless indicated otherwise, Weekly Hot Fix updates from our FTP site have only been tested with English versions of products.
For Crystal Reports 10 and Crystal Enterprise 10, the update for this issue is included in the Crystal 10 Viewers Weekly Hot Fix (WHF). This is available in English only at the following location:
    ftp://ftp.crystaldecisions.com/outgoing/EHF/viewers10win_en.zip
This issue is addressed in the following components (and later versions):
    PageObjectModel.dll, version 10.0.5.785, dated 8/25/2004
    ReportRenderer.dll, version 10.0.5.785, dated 8/25/2004

  • Report parameters when using DoCmd.OutputTo

    OK,
Thank you one and all for answering my last question. I have another one. OK, I can set the report's parameters using the where clause part of the DoCmd.OpenReport. Great! But I also save that report as a text file using the following command
DoCmd.OutputTo acOutputReport, "rptSalesInvoiceEntryWineShip", acFormatTXT, strInvoicePath & Me.txtInvoiceNumber & ".txt", False
Unfortunately, there is no where clause part available!! OK, any ideas here. thanks!!
    Ed Cohen
    Edgar Cohen

The other way to do this, which avoids having to open the report in print preview, is to base the report on a query which references a control on a form (presumably the txtInvoiceNumber control in your case), as a parameter.
As it happens there is a demo file which does exactly this, using a simple invoicing database as the example, as InvoicePDF.zip, in my public databases folder at:
    https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=44CC60D7FEA42912&id=44CC60D7FEA42912!169
You might have to copy and paste the text of the above (not copy the link location) into your browser; for some reason it sometimes doesn't seem to work as a hyperlink.
As its name suggests this creates a PDF file of the invoice, which is primarily what the demo is for, but it will work just the same if outputting to a text file.

    </html>

I never really had much luck with this approach.
Mind you I was using Crystal Reports 10, and as far as I recall it didn't allow setting/changing of database at this level.
    Things to check
    - can you create a database connection on your page with this URL/username/password?
    - what server are you using? Tomcat? WebLogic?
I found this in your other post:
Connection Information: {Server Name=ee6rpt, Connection String=DSN=s(ee6rpt);User ID=s(ee62test);Password=;UseDSNProperties=b(false), Database Name=, Database DLL=crdb_odbc.dll}That would indicate it is using odbc to connect to the database (crdb_odbc.dll). ODBC is a bad idea with java.
The way I have got it to work for me (after much trial and error) was to in Crystal Reports to connect using the Oracle Driver, and specifying a tnsname - eg define REPORT_DS in tnsnames.ora.
When running through the JRC, it looked for a JNDI datasource under that same name "REPORT_DS".
Don't know if that will help you or not.
    Good luck,

On my Windows environment the JRC export into PDF work perfectly. I know that there are some known issues regarding the usage of JRC on Linux environments. Could this be one of those?
Any solution (or workaround) would be highly appreciated!
    Thank you!
PS Maybe this is relevant: I use a MySQL database!

What kind of image do you have in the report?
Do you have -Djava.awt.headless=true specified for the Java JVM option?
