Restoration of 10gR2 RMAN backupset onto 11gR1 database
I am trying to restore my RMAN backupset from 10gR2 RAC database onto 11gR1 RAC database, both on HP Itanium v11.31. I was wondering if anyone has tried this before?

Restore single instance rman backup to rac database
Hello all. I have a 10gR2 single instance database that I have been taking backups using the oracle's suggested backup strategy, that is, once full database backup and incremental backups here and there. That's is all fine as I have (many times) being requested to rollback the database resulting in all operations being sucessfull.
However, since this is somehow a pre-certification database, I am now being tasked to restore this database to what is going to be our production database, which is a 10gR2 rac database. I have already set up the RAC database sucessfull.
Now, my question is: How can I take one of the backups that I have on the single-instance database and restore onto my RAC database ?
Some information about the infraestructure:
Both operating systems are HP-UX. Single instance is 11.23, RAC database is 11.31.
Both database are using ASM as datafiles storage and flash recovery area storage.
Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks!In general terms, there are several ways you can convert a single instance into a rac intance, and it involves much more activities than just adding redo threads.
Use of DBCA
Enterprise Manager Grid Control
rconfig utility
Considering your case, if you don't currently have Grid Control, the first option is rconfig.
1. Migrate your database from the current environment to the target environment by a regular cloning procedure, this will create a single instance into your rac environment. Your regular rdbms rac installation allows you to manage both, single instance and rac instances. Use this procedure to clone your database to the target RAC environment using recovery manager --> http://madrid9999.googlepages.com/rmancloneadatabase
2. Once you have started your database in the RAC environment proceed with the rconfig tool, this requires some files to perform the conversion, the ConvertToRAC.xml file which is located at $ORACLE_HOME/assistants/rconfig/sampleXMLs
3. Once you copied/edited the ConvertToRAC.xml file, you have to run the rconfig. Save the ConvertToRAC.xml under a different file name.
rconfig editedConvertToRAC.xml
4. For further reference on the rconfig command, you may refer to this page Oracle® Real Application Clusters Installation Guide

ORA-01152 when restoring from RMAN backupset in NOARCHIVELOG mode
Hi all,
I got the error ORA-01152 when I tried restoring an Oracle 10g R1 database from an RMAN backupset into a new server. The error returned when it reached to the level of opening the database in resetlogs.
The database runs on NOARCHIVELOG mode and on Windows 2003 Server SP2 32-bit.
Following is what I did in RMAN:
set ORACLE_HOME=D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\db_1
set ORACLE_SID=DAWA
set PATH=D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\db_1\bin;%PATH%

Rman backup and restore on another box with the same database name
Hi,
I am using the following script to backup the database, I want to restore the backup on another server with same database name but different datafile locations , Can some one help me in the restoration please.
#set oracle_sid=LIVE
run {
allocate channel t1 type disk;
backup database plus archivelog delete input format 'D:\Backup\ORACLE\LIVE\df_t%t_s%s_p%p';
backup current controlfile;
release channel t1;
ThanksYou need to use "set newname" before you restore your database.
You can refer this http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/rcmdupad.htm

9> }Also, you have connected to the database TEST, so is the TEST database the new database that you want to create using restore method ?
If yes, then how the status of the database is OPEN ? The database status should be nomount before you restore the controlfile.
If the database is not started, then:
RMAN shows as "connected to target database: TEST (not started)
If the database is in nomount stage, then
RMAN shows as "connected to target database: TEST (not mounted)
If the database is in mount stage, then
RMAN shows as "connected to target database: TEST (DBID=xxxxxxxx, not open)
If the database is open mode, then
RMAN shows as "connected to target database: TEST (DBID=xxxxxx)
In the output you mentioned, RMAN is showing the status of the database as opened. So if TEST is the database you are creating, then it has to be in nomount stage. In your case, it looks like TEST is the primary database from which you have taken the backup. -

I am not able to restore spfile from rman backup ;;;Hi,
I would like to know few things
1. How are you setting the db_name ? you can set db_id at RMAN, how are you setting the db_name ?
2. Do you have any default init file at default location ? if yes, is the db_name parameter set correctly in that file ?
Since spfile is yet to be restored, you must set the db_name parameter correctly before you start spfile restore.This can be done with init file at default location which can even contain just one paremeter i.e db_name. -
New Oracle DBA - Need help with backup & restore procedure via RMAN
Hello everyone,
I've been a SQL Server DBA for 12 years now, but new to the Oracle space. My first assignment at work was to refresh our training environment with production. So with that said, I took a full backup of our production database via RMAN and backed up the Control File. I then copied both the Control File and full backup from our production environment to training. I followed the procedures listed in the URL below:
http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_rman_clone+copy_database.htm
I then connected to RMAN and executed a 'show all' which is as follows:
RMAN configuration parameters are:
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
The CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP was set to ON but received a message that the database needed to be mounted, so, I mounted the database and made the changes, but when I shutdown the database and performed the startup nomount again, the settings were gone. Are these settings valid only when the database is mounted? How can I successfully refresh this training environment with production data? I'm at a standstill here so any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
PeteThe CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP was set to ON but received a message that the database needed to be mounted, so, I mounted the database and made the changes, but when I shutdown the database and performed the startup nomount again, the settings were gone. These settings are persistent settings.So these information retain in control files.To reading information from control files database instance must be MOUNT or OPEN stage.Due to you have mount instance and try SHOW ALL command through RMAN.
Are these settings valid only when the database is mounted? Not only MOUNT also OPEN stage.
How can I successfully refresh this training environment with production data? I'm at a standstill here so any help would be very much appreciated.
There are several ways like duplication.But you take full backup from production database using BACKUP DATABASE through rman.In this case you will get also AUTOBACKUP for controlfiles/spfiles.Then copy these backup files and all available archive logs to training server and perform below steps.
1) You have set properly ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID environment variable.After that first need restore spfile as
rman target /
startup force nomount;
restore spfile from 'autobackup_location';
startup force nomount;2) Now you have to restore controlfiie as
rman>restore controlfile from 'autobackup_location';
rman>alter database mount;
3) Now need catalog(it means register) all backup files and archivelogs in new restored controlfile as
rman>catalog start with 'backuplocation';
4) Finally you can restore and recover your database as below
rman>restore database;
rman>recover database;
rman>alter database open resetlogs;
If you want restore database to new location then before executing RESTORE DATABASE command you can use SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE clause.Firstly refer backup recovery guide in online documentation. -
Can we rename/relocate the RMAN backupset?
Hi All,
Can we rename/relocate the RMAN backupset?
I have the following scenerio:
1.took tha backup on /u99 mountpoint using rman
2.copy the entire backup to tape
3.filesystem /u99 scrapped
4.created new filesystem /u101
5.copy the backup to /u101 from tape.
Now we have to restore the database..but problem is that rman dont know /u101, by default it will search from /u99 filesystem...how to tell rman take the backup from /u101 not from /u99...
Please help me
Regards
SymalYou need to use the RMAN command
SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE <datafile_number> TO ‘<path_and_filename>’;
for each datafile you want to restore and recover. -
Dear all,
I copied all the RMAN backupset and found this is expired. Is it possible to make this valid, NOT EXPIRED.
backup piece handle=/backup/db/backup/RMAN/backup_PROD_748148532_40523_1_ibm9flpk_1_1.bck recid=40515 stamp=748148534
crosschecked backup piece: found to be 'EXPIRED'
Please advice.yes... it is in the original location. I can restore the control file successful.
However, I get error when I restore database.

What are the caveats of using ASM as storage for RMAN backupsets?
Hello all,
We are currently evaluating RAC as our standard database platform. Until now we have been using 10g single instance with ASM for datafiles and local filesystems for RMAN backupsets and archivelogs. We chose to use local fileystems for backup components so that we can utilize a Tivoli filesystem backup in order to secure the backup pieces to tape.
With RAC, we are looking into a shared location for backupsets and archivelogs. OCFS2 is out of the picture due to it not functioning on top of linux LVM. It appears that our only "shared" option is to use ASM for backupsets and archivelogs.
My concern is that while the data diskgroups and rman diskgroups will be separate, they are both running on ASM and therefore if ASM fails or is corrupted, we have nothing. My current plan is to utilize the Tivoli RMAN MML (TDPO) to backup the backupsets to tape after the ASM backupset has completed.
What experiences have been had with using ASM for RMAN backups?
Any advice on additional protection we can employ to ensure that the database remains recoverable?
Thanks in advance,
DavidI've personally haven't implemented RMAN with ASM, but you may want to review Faster Backup, Faster Recovery which discusses RMAN utilizing ASM.
And although you may not get any of the negative aspects from these presentations, you may want to check out High Availability Customer Case Studies, Presentations, Profiles, Analyst Reports, and Press Releases.
Hope this helps! -

Can we restore oracle 11g RMAN backups to 10g server
Hi,
I have RMAN backups (full backup)of oracle 11g database. My server was suddenly crashed due to hardware failure.
We have another Oracle 10g server. Is it possible to restore RMAN backups of 11g database to Oracle 10g server???
ThanksI don't have 11g server ready with me. The other server running oracle 10g and I dont have rights to install oracle 11g on the 10g server. So I can not test the RESTORE/RECOVER commands.
If anyone had experience in the past, please let me know whether we can RESTORE RMAN backups of 11g database to oracle 10g server...
Thanks -
Hi guys
i need to restore last week rman backup from .. we are not using catalog database.

SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 1 TO '<newpath>/<filename>.dbf';
SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 2 TO '<newpath>/<filename>.dbf';
SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 3 TO '<newpath>/<filename>.dbf';
RESTORE DATABASE ;
SWITCH DATAFILE ALL;

ORA-01190: control file or data file 4 is from before the last RESETLOGS
ORA-01110: data file 4: 'C:\ESAS\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\BRANCH.DBF'
Also the size of the branch.dbf is 2,800GB normally, but when I restore it from the backupset it is nearly 500MB.If you did a RESETLOGS 3 days ago, that would have been between
the SCNs 26840983 and 28642042 ! based on these lines :
RMAN-06025: no backup of log thread 1 seq 1 lowscn 28642042 found to restore
RMAN-06025: no backup of log thread 1 seq 2225 lowscn 28640983 found to restore
However you do not expect to see a 500MB file. So I wonder if Oracle found
no backup of the datafile from recent days but found the most recent backup to be of so long ago (3+ days) that the datafile then was only 500MB.
That would mean that your recent daily backups have been failing or silently erroring out.
If RMAN cannot find a most recent (eg yesterday's) backup of a datafile, it will go back in time till it can find the "lastest" backup -- so the "lastest" backup of that datafile was a 500MB image many days ago ?
Check your backup destination directory -- your FlashbackRecoveryArea to see if backups are really going there. Check your backup logs. -

Will be very much thankful to you...In an emergency situation, you can try using the SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE.
Oracle is very clear on this point and says that this file should not be used for any purpose, but breaking this rule, we can have success and bring a consistent controlfile.
The snapshot control file is a copy of a database control file created in an operating system-specific location by RMAN. RMAN creates the snapshot control file so that it has a consistent version of a control file to use when either resynchronizing the recovery catalog or backing up the control file.
The Default Location of SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE is $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/snapcf_<DB_NAME>.f
If we recently used RMAN most recent controlfile will be my SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE.
See this example:
SQL> create pfile='/home/oracle/spfile.txt' from spfile;
SQL> !
oracle@aix:/home/oracle> cp /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_11203/dbs/snapcf_dbtst.f /home/oracle/control.ora
