Rhsnippet.apj & rhvariable.apj issue

Hello Everyone,
I found following issue. If you know following issue and you know how to avoid this issue, please reply.
Procedure for Reappearance
Opening a project file in Robohelp.
There is no update in Robohelp.
Closing a project file.
Expected Result
rhsnippet.apj and rhvariable.apj are NOT updated.
Actual Result
rhsnippet.apj and rhvariable.apj are updated.
Comparing these files between before update and after update, I found that order of snippet and variable written in these files are changed.
Problem
The Robohelp source data is editted by multi authors, and we are using subversion for manage the source data. So we are encountering confiction by this issue, when we commit or update source data to subversion.
Robohelp Version
Robohelp 9.0.2
Best Regards.

Hello,
Sorry for late reply.
I do not use the auto-update feature.
I use variables in a snippet.
Problem is that order of each variable or snippet written in the file is changed automatically, when the file is saved.
We are managing rhsnippet and rhvariable in SVN, so we are not able to see the difference between each revision.

  • Rhsnippet.apj Error with RoboHTML 11 Project on Network

    I have an RH 11 project on a network drive. The project has 485 snippets. When adding or modifying snippets I get the following error:
    An error occurred while trying to read data from <n:\roboHelp Projects\\rhsnippet.apj <1>.
    When I open the rhsnippet.apj file, the file is truncated like this:
    <file>
                <name>mysnippet.hts</name>
                <comments></comments
    It seems that RoboHelp cannot complete writing to the APJ file.
    After closing and reopening the project, I then get a message saying the cpd is corrupt. After deleting the cpd and reopening the project, I still get a message saying the project is corrupt.
    The only way I have found to fix the project is to move the project back to a local drive, delete the cpd, delete the rhsnippet.apj file and re-import all the snippets.
    I have seen a similar issue which was resolved by moving to another network drive. I moved my project to another network drive but the issue still occurred.
    rhsnippet.apj Error with RoboHTML 10 Project on Network
    My experience with R10 R11 projects on a network drive has been problematic, despite Adobes assertion that R11 and R10 projects now work on network drives. For example, Adobe support confirmed that RoboHelp does not support projects on a network drive that uses DFS (Distributed File System). I have found that large projects seem to be problematic on network drives.
    I suspect that part of this issue is the large amount of snippets I have, as other projects on the network drive don't appear to have this issue as they do not contain a large amount of snippets.
    If anybody else has experienced a similar issue with projects on a network drive related to snippets I'd be grateful for some advice.

    Thanks for the advice Peter, but deleting the CPD does not fix the issue. I have 500 snippets because I have 500 fields (and growing all the time) to document that can appear in multiple reports and also require that each field is documented separately. So although I seem to be pushing the envelope with the amount of snippets, I am grateful for the existence of snippets because trying to document this without snippets would be a nightmare!
    One thing that annoys me is that you cannot apply a style sheet to multiple snippets at the same time. At least I have not found a way. Is there a way of doing this – short of editing the HTML for each snippet individually? I will add this to a feature request for RoboHelp as well as log a bug report with Adobe.

  • Rhsnippet.apj Error with RoboHTML 10 Project on Network

    I have a RoboHTML 10 project on a local drive that was working just fine.
    I tried to move the project to a network location. Things seemed to be going well, until I tried adding a new snippet file - when I tried saving the new snippet, I received the following error message:
    The snipped was created OK and I could use it in my topics just fine. But when I checked out the rhsnippet.apj file, it was truncated at the end:
    I copied my project back to my local drive, renamed the rhsnippet.apj file, and opened RoboHTML - the rhsnippet.apj file was recreated, and it was no longer truncated.
    The local rhsnippet.aps file is about 88 KB while the network version of the file is 76.0 KB. I have 770 snippets and ~4k topics in my project.
    I would like to have my RoboHTML project reside on a network folder, but I'm not willing to trust it while this error message appears.
    Please let me know if there's something I can do to get this to work... thanks.

    So the problem is only in the one project, correct?
    I am not inclined to think it will help but let's rule out CPD file issues. Delete the CPD file, copy the good snippet file in and reopen the project.
    Backup first.

  • RH7 - getting snippet apj error message

    I'm using RoboHelp 7 HTML with WebHelp Pro layout.  I had an existing snippet that I was linked not being used in any help topic so I deleted it. In addition, I moved snippets up and down in the Snippet pod so that they would appear in alphabetical order. I did save my snippets using Save All after I deleted and moved them around.
    However, I noticed that the snippet that I thought had been deleted was still down at the bottom of the list in the Snippet pod. When I tried to delete it again, I got the following error message.
    FYI - I restored my backup project and tried some of the same actions again. Moving snippets and then deleting the one that wasn't being used. Got the same error message.
    How do I resolve this snippet problem in RH7?

    Thanks. I tried that and still got the same error message.  I even put the snippet names in alphabetical order via Notepad. However, when I re-opened RoboHelp 7 and the snippet pod, the names were still out of sequence. I would have thought the pod view would be updated to match the sequence in my apj file but that didn't happen.
    When I resequenced (moving them up and/or down in the pod view) and saved, everything seemed okay.  But then I tried to delete one of the snippets that was not being used anywhere and got the same error message.
    I'm hoping this is just a RoboHelp 7 issue and that things will be okay when I upgrade to version 8.

  • RH9 Snippets not saving, RH not closing have to force close

    I'm a new RH user so please forgive me if this is answered somewhere else (I did search for awhile first).
    Windows XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 3
    RoboHelp 9 HTML 9.0.1.232 (recent upgrade from RH7) Project has about a thousand topics
    Using Visual SourceSafe (VSS) for version control
    There were snippets in the project before I started and before this upgrade - those all are usable and stay where you put them through saving and closing RH. Other edits to topics seem to be surviving the save process also. Snippets I create (have not created any before this) are not surviving when I save the project, but they are creating .hts files on the hard drive (but not showing up in VSS).  Also, when I create multipe new snippets, the first one and only the first one I create shows up in the snippet pod (before closing RH), and when I save/close/reopen RH, none show in the pod.
    Note: had the same as problem/related to this forum question.
    Also, now when I try to close RH it just closes the active tabs but does not close the project and I have to force close RH in the Windows Task Manager.
    Summary:
    Edits to topics that do not      involve snippets are being saved
    Edits that involve snippets      created before yesterday are saved
    Snippets created by me:
    All are creating files       on my hard drive
    None are going into       Visual SourceSafe
    Only the first shows       up in the Snippet pod before RH closes
    None show up in the       Snippet pod when RH is reopened later
    So there we are.  Any ideas or suggestions?

    OK, my colleague (who is a RH certified expert) figure out what was going on.  Basically, in addition to our two hard drive copies of the project being out of sync (which we fixed by deleting some, taking some out of VSS that didn't belong, and recopying everything onto my hard drive) there is an underlying snippet problem which my colleague diagnosed as follows (her description):
    The project was worked on in RH7 for a couple of years. In early June 2011, RH9 was installed. The project was opened in RH9, and the appropriate ‘do you want to convert the project’ message displayed. I proceeded to do the conversion.
    Everything seemed to convert rather well except for one thing – the snippets. If you opened the Properties window for a snippet, you could see the description; however, the description would not display in the Pod in the designated “Description” column.
    As a test, I created a new snippet in RH9, which generated the following code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"  "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <meta name="topic-comment" content="here's the description" />
    <title>New Snippet</title>
    <meta name="generator" content="Adobe RoboHelp 9" />
    </head>
    <body>
    <p>This is placeholder text for your snippet. To add content to the body,
    replace this text. </p>
    <p>&#160;</p>
    <p>For information about applying snippets to topics, press <b>F1</b>.</p>
    </body>
    </html>
    However, the code for a converted snippet looks like this:
    <!doctype HTML public "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Frameset//EN">
    <html><head>
    <meta http-equiv=content-type content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
    <meta name=generator content="Adobe RoboHelp - www.adobe.com">
    <meta name=generator-major-version content=0.1>
    <meta name=generator-minor-version content=1>
    <meta name=filetype content=RoboHelp>
    <meta name=filetype-version content=1>
    <meta name=page-count content=1>
    <meta name=layout-height content=487>
    <meta name=layout-width content=424>
    <title>Use this snippet as the explanation for the Credit Type field on a form.</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <p>Unit of credit for the course. Together with the Credit Value, it defines
    the possible credit hours earned for the course.</p>
    </body>
    </html>
    Notice how the text that is in the title tag is actually the DESCRIPTION for the snippet. Also, there is no meta tag for the real description in the converted code. The real title for this snippet is Credit Type, but for some reason, that does not display in the converted snippet code. The name only displays correctly in the Properties window, like this:
    Strange how the name (or “Title” as the code seems to indicate it should be) correctly displays in the Properties window, but that name is nowhere in the actual code in the HTS file.
    So it seems to me that there is a disconnect between what’s in the code, and what’s displaying in RH, and I’m not sure how or why that happened. I simply allowed RH9 to convert my RH7 project, and this Snippet problem was the only resulting problem that I’ve found.
    Is there any way to get this properly fixed by Adobe? Even when we enter the appropriate descriptions ourselves, they STILL don’t display properly in the Snippets pod. Sometimes some of them display, sometimes all of them don’t display, and sometimes if you perform an action (like creating a new snippet), then that action will cause some or all of the descriptions to display.
    Here’s an example --
    1st screenshot below – the Snippets pod as it typically displays for us in RH9. Absolutely no descriptions displaying.
    2nd screenshot below – I created a new snippet. The description for the new snippet displays PLUS the two descriptions for recently created snippets display! You can only see one of them in the screenshot (“Curriculum Considered Complete Situations”), but further down the list, the description for a snippet named “Requiring Search Criteria” also displays after creating the new snippet (Note: Both of these snippets were created in RH9, which raises the questions: Why didn’t the descriptions already display *before* I created a new snippet? Why did the action of creating a new snippet *cause* the two snippet descriptions to suddenly display?)
    Another Note: After my co-worker had manually gone through all of the snippets and manually added descriptions (and updated the “Title” tags to reflect the actual title of each snippet), this caused some issues – erratic Snippet pod behavior, and he had to keep using the Task Manager to close RH (normal close methods wouldn’t work). So since RH9 started acting funny and wouldn’t close for him, we reverted back to using the HTS files and the rhsnippet.apj snippet file that RH9 originally converted for us, and those original files are what we are continuing to use, but we would like to have a solution for the problem. Why didn’t RH9 properly convert the HTS files? Or at least, to us, based on the code that’s actually in the files, they don’t appear to be properly converted.

  • Snippets lost from project in RH7

    Hello,
    I am having a problem with snippets losing their connections to a project after I close and reopen the project.
    If I create a new snippet it appears in the Snippet pod, and the content is shown anywhere it is inserted in a page. If i then close and re-open RH, the Snippet pod is empty and the snippet content is not displayed in pages where it was inserted. The .hts files for the snippets still exist in the project folder, and the html still has the snippet placeholder anywhere it was inserted. I can fix the problem by clicking on "Import Snippet" from the Snippet pod and then importing all the snippets I had.
    Does anyone know how to correct this issue, so that snippts will remain associated with a project?

    Ok. I got it figured out. Thank you Peter, you set me on the right track.
    Here's what you need to do in case anyone else runs into the same problem:
    1.(Obviously you'd want to make a back up of the project first)
    2. Copy all snippet files (.hts extensions) to some other folder (outside of the project).
    3. Delete all snippet files from the project (.hts).
    4. Delete the .cpd file from the project.
    5. Delete the rhsnippet.apj from the project.
    6. Open the project, and import the snippets that you copied in step 2.
    7. Generate project. Should be good at that point.

  • RH 10 Snippets Report innacurate

    I am using RoboHelp 10 on Windows XP and found that the Snippet report is inaccurate. It often reports that a snippet is used in a topic when it is not. The same inaccuracy applies when you look at the properties of a snippet and look at "The Used in" tab.
    Is this a known bug or have my snippets, or the topics they are located in, become corrupt?
    This thread http://forums.adobe.com/thread/514229 says snippets are located in the registry for RH7, but I could not find any snippets defined in the registry for RH10. Has this changed?
    I know that the rhsnippet.apj file defines the snippets and the relevant .hts file defines the content of the snippet, but is the location of snippets in a project defined anywhere in a file that is editable?
    Any help appreciated.
    Mark

    Snippets are in the root of your project.
    I have not had any issues like this and cannot recall seeing any other posts. Maybe the CPD needs a kick or maybe it's a source control issue?

  • Snippets Lost from Project

    Hello,
    Using RH7 I had a problem in which every time I closed and reopened a project, the snippets would be lost from the project and I would have to re-import them. Adobe refused to assist me in this because it is project-specific (I can't replicate it in a new project), so I just worked around it.
    I recently upgraded to to RH8 and was hoping that whatever the problem was would have been solved. But it was not.
    In RH8, the snippets are lost from the project every time I close and reopen, but additionally, the placeholders in the HTML are converted to non-breaking space entities, so I can no longer work around it by just re-importing.
    Does anyone have some insight into how the project is wired up to the snippets or where would be a good place to start in trying to track down the problem?

    Ok. I got it figured out. Thank you Peter, you set me on the right track.
    Here's what you need to do in case anyone else runs into the same problem:
    1.(Obviously you'd want to make a back up of the project first)

    3. Delete all snippet files from the project (.hts).
    4. Delete the .cpd file from the project.
    5. Delete the rhsnippet.apj from the project.
    6. Open the project, and import the snippets that you copied in step 2.
    7. Generate project. Should be good at that point.

  • Version control not synchronizing the rhvariable.apj and default.css

    After we had many problems with the 8.0.2 update, we managed to get a compile that was mostly correct and it buys us a couple weeks.  We are still having problems with the rhvariable.apj and the default.css files.  We had to edit the .cpd file in MS Access to get our global variables back from just before the update.  I did not want to manually enter 800+ variables again.  If my colleague edits the rhvariable file, i can't edit the file and i get an error.  If I edit the file, he can't read my file.  In order to get a compile with the variables we cut and pasted my variables into his .cpd file and it worked, but, now we are adding more variables and changing others resulting in only one of us having a working copy.  My system complained about the default .css which did not come down from the server so i just pasted his file to my directory and it is working but we are having problems editing that file also.  This is crazy.  The 8.0.2 really hurt us and is still hurting.  We are trying to run with it but having some significant problems.
    Got any ideas?

    Try this test.
    Create a new project and create a variable with no value. Close the project and open rhvariable.apj with a text editor. You will see nothing has been saved, the variable name will not be there.
    Now open the project and enter a value. Close the project and open the rhvariable file again, now you will see the variable and the value.
    This seems to confirm that RH does not allow a null value variable to be created in the rhvariable.apj file. It may show it in the interface but that was not the problem.

  • Rhvariable.apj file

    Hi,
    When I try making changes to the variables, either adding or
    modifying, I receive a message that an error occurred while trying
    to read data from the rhvariable.apj file. This message occurs
    every time I press "Save".
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks,

    Oops, there is a special character - (Product name is Forte).
    How do I remove this variable from the help? I have tried
    editing the rhvariable.apj file, as well as removing it from within
    RoboHelp, but this hasn't solved the problem.
    (I am not using source control. I have 2 PCs)

  • RoboHelp 10 .apj file error issues & crashing on save and generate

    Hello All!
    I am working with a large FM book (100+ FM files) that we have linked to a RoboHelp 10 project.
    Everytime I update my RH project I am getting this error:
    I have tried copying the folder, deleting the .apj file, and reopening. RHopens just fine.
    The other major issue I am having is when I save and generate the project RoboHelp freezes up and won't save & generate the layout.
    I have all of the FM files open and updated. Everything that can be updated in RH before save and genereate is updated. Any ideas??
    Thanks!!

    I have moved this post to FrameMaker Integration as I think it will do better there.

  • RoboHelp 8 - how to resolve rhbuildtag.apj/.cpd file errors?

    Hi there,
    I’m using RoboHelp 8 (with service packs, version number is 8.0.2.208). There are two writers on our team (in separate offices) and we use SVN (via Tortoise SVN) to version all our source files. Our Online Help is comprised of about 30 individual help projects that we merge at build time. We work locally on our own machines and commit everything to SVN each evening.
    We (mainly me) have had ongoing problems with .cpd files getting corrupted (I’m in the company 5 months). I’ve followed all the good advice I’ve seen on forums about renaming/deleting them and letting the affected RoboHelp project re-create it when I start it up again. This has worked until now.
    Also note, that I got a new machine early this week and I brought all our source files down successfully from our SVN repository after we installed RoboHelp. Happy days.
    Yesterday in one Help project I received the following error messages and noticed that the Conditional Build Tags were not listed in the CBT Pod, despite being present in the topic themselves.
    An error occurred while trying to read data from <Project Path\Project Name\rhbuildtag.apj> <1>
    Your project file, C:<Project Path\Project Name\project.cpd, is corrupt and cannot be opened. Try deleting this file and reopening the project.
    I consulted with my colleague this morning and his local project is fine – all conditions present and correct and no CPD error message. He committed his project to SVN and I updated but still no luck.
    Despite having the latest versions from our repository anyway, I tried copying the contents of his rhbuildtag.apj file to mine but that made no difference at my side. I renamed/deleted CPD files several times over but project still won’t open. I deleted my local working versions of all our Help projects and brought them down from our SVN repository - twice. No luck.
    I’m flummoxed as how to fix this project/restore conditions to CBT Pod?
    Why would I have ongoing CPD issues and my colleague not?
    My colleague is offline until the morning (different time zones) so will catch up with him then again. It seems to be something very local to my setup.
    Many thanks in advance for any wise words offered.

    Hi folks,
    Just to let you know that we resolved our problems with our misbehaving rhbuildtag.apj and .cpd project files.
    As I mentioned previously, my colleague's version had been working fine. This was the very puzzling bit as I was pulling the exact same set of project files from our SVN repository.
    Since yesterday...
    From these forums, I discovered the 'Clear project cache(.cpd) before opening any project' check box in the Tools > Options dialog. That wasn't selected in my troubled project (was able to get into the project earlier in the day). It was selected in other projects so selected it but it made no difference.
    I then asked my colleague this morning to check if that check box was selected on his working copy of the project, reasoning that maybe if it was selected on mine and not his, it could cause some kind of disparity.
    Wrong move. Very wrong move. Clearing his cache file caused him to get the same errors as I had got. So while we had the exact same rhbuildtag.apj file, there must have been something in his old cache file, keeping this error at bay. We don't version the .cpd files so his file would have been particular to his local working version of the project.
    So another step back - now a corrupt project at both offices.
    I then took another look at the contents of the troublesome rhbuildtag.apj file. I had noticed yesterday that there was something funny about one condition that I added back in October - a condition based on a release number (6.3.12). There were two instances of it in the file - looked to be saved twice though the condition was only ever added once and displayed once in the project CBT pod. See the attached screenshot. Also There was some markup around it that didn't make sense, looked like the file had saved badly. I compared it to other working build tag files in other projects (and while the conditions would vary slightly across the projects, they should be very similiar. I saw nothing like it.
    I saved the contents of my file locally (though being versioned in SVN would have had a backup anyway).
    I deleted out one of the duplicate 6.3.12 conditions and removed the funny mark up.
    And lo and behold our project opened successfully.
    I commited my changes to the rhbuildtag.apj file back to SVN. My colleague updated his version and his problems too are resolved.
    Root cause:
    Looks like our woes were caused by a corrupt condition in the rhbuildtag.apj file, which then caused the .cpd file to crash.
    Resolution:
    Identified duplicate condition tags and superfluous markup in the rhbuildtag.apj file and remove them (after making a copy). My previous machine was terribly slow and RoboHelp oftened crashed due to the poor machine performance. This could be one plausible cause for the corrupt condition.
    Given we added this condition back in October, I'm not sure why the problem only cropped up now as we would have made changes to the project since then. But such is RoboHelp and our daily battles.
    Hope this info is of help to someone out there.
    Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated.

  • Error messages: Robohelp 9 - RHFrameStyleMappings.apj and .cpd files

    I am updating an old Robohelp file to version 9 and I received the following warning messages.
    Error in reading RHFrameStyleMappings.apj file
    Open project was cancelled or the application was unable to load database for - Custom Casualty.cpd

    Hi there
    Depending on how old you are updating from, you may need to take the following step.
    If you aren't using Frame, try this. Create a new blank project in a different folder. This should create a new and empty RHFrameStyleMappings.apj file. Then copy the file to your project where it's posting the error.
    Now open the upgraded project and see if all is well.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Error reading .apj file?

    I've had RoboHelp 9crash during generating files in TCS 3, and now I'm getting a message about how an error has occurred while trying to read the My RoboHelp Projects/RHFrameDocs.apj file.
    It appears on re-opening the project. Is this a conversion setting file, and what do I need to do to resolve the problem?

    Never mind. It was a new test project, so I just removed it and started over.

  • RH 8: Error: Cannot Read RHFrameStyleMappings.apj

    We recently upgraded from RH7 to RH8. One of our project files (.xpj) would not open. After clicking Okay to Upgrade to RH8 I got a message "Error: Cannot Read RHFrameStyleMappings.apj". I decided to try copying RHFrameStyleMappings.apj from another project folder into the project folder of the project file that would not open.  Then when trying to open the project file again I received this message "Error: Cannot Read RHFrameDoc.apj"  and once again I copied it over from another file.  I tried opening it again and it worked.  I also tried generating the project to make sure it worked and it appears to work as normal. My question is if there is any reason my copying the two .apj files over could cause problems with the project file or if I should consider the problem fixed.  Thanks!

    Is that not the same problem as running in this thread?
