RMAN Backup is very slow

Recently we have enabled RMAN in oracle database 11gR2.
We are using Oracle secure backup 10.4, solaris 10 and SL24 tape autoloader.
We have performed full database backup with size 610GB using RMAN to tape and it took 7hrs to backed up.
Could you please advice me how to fine tune the performance of RMAN.
Thanks in advance,

  • Time machine backup is very slow after migration to Mountain Lion

After I migrated to mountain lion, Time machine backup is very slow. Time machine preference says there is no previous back up although I had Time machine on before migration. It did not help verymuch to connect an ethernet cable between my timecapsule and my Macbook Pro
Here are the screenshots I see:
Should I erase the previous backup made on Lion before backing up on Mountain lion? in this case how do I transfer the Lion backup file on another disk just in case something goes wrong before I have a good backup under Mountain Lion? just like any other file?

After further reading on the forum, the problem was solved: I used the possibility to back up on a second disk (in the preferences Time Machine choose a disk and save on both disks) to make a back up on another usb disk, and then erased the old .sparsebundle file on my Time Capsule. I have then re defined time capsule as the back up disk and then the backup was muuuuuch faster (one night instead of less than 1 giga after 3 days.....)

  • Rman backup is too slow

    Hi
I have oracle database (11gR1) 64 bit installed on Windows 2003 R2 64 bit server. MY DB size is almost 152 GB and its running in archive log mode. When i run RMAN online backup , Its taking too much time almost it has taken 22 Hours and still its running , I am not sure why it is consuming this much time ..
I am using below RMAN script ...
    run {
    allocate channel ch1 type disk;
    backup FILESPERSET 32
    format 'F:\RMAN_BACKUP\%d_t%t_s%s_FULL' tag Full_DATABASE_07_july_13

  • Backups are very slow

Since I installed Mavericks the backup program seems to run dreadfully slowly. Also the "clock" on the top line no longer rotates. a 25 Gig backup was going to take all day. I don't remember this kind of timeframe under

A few months back, I picked up a new iMac, and an external USB 3.0 LaCie 4TB. I performed the initial Time Machine of the 3TB internal that only had about 700GB on it, and as expected and anticipated, it took forever. However, what really unhinged me was the incrementals (after installing Logic and a few other Pro apps) took bloody forever for 4GB incrementals. I scoured the Apple Discussion forums, Google searches, but never did find any answers.
Then one day, I decided to Safe Mode boot the iMac (Shift key on start-up), and then rebooted it (the safe-mode boot took 15 mins to reach the desktop). Upon the fresh reboot after Safe Mode boot, Time Machine backups were super quick, and have been for 6 months now. (initially on 10.8.x, and still quick on 10.9.0 and now 10.9.1).
It's worth a try; It's technically a quick procedure, and could correct your dog-slow TM backups.

  • Backup Z3 very slow

Good morning , I'm trying to do my backupcompleto z3 using sony pc companion but every time I said that we will put 150 hours to finish. What am I doing wrong ?

  • Very Slow Backup

I have a 500 GB USB hard drive that I can move files to very quickly. When I select it as my Time Machine Hard Drive the the backup runs very slow. According to the tracking bar it's only backing up about 100 MB every 2 min + I stopped spotlight from indexing the drive but it didn't make a noticeable difference. The drive is currently formated Extended but I've tried Extended (Journaled) also. The backup seems to be working and I have not seen a large performance hit. It just seems to be very slow.
Does anyone have an idea what I could have wrong?
    Thanks

You probably are not in any danger. The first TM backup has huge amounts of things to do beside just copying your boot volumes data. It builds a data base and collects a bunch of other info to keep track of things.
How much data does Time Machine pref panel show it has to backup ?
Let's say it's 150 GB. Then a USB2 device will get on average around 12 MB/sec. That's some 43 GB per hour. Thus for 150 GB the backup will take 3.5 hrs.
Be patient and let TM backup finish.
Are you see a rotating set of arrows in the Finder side bar to right of your TM backup USB device ? Also, there could be a small backup status window floating about somewhere that shows the backup progress as well.

  • Time machine very slow with mountain lion

Time Machine backups seem very slow with Mountain Lion.

Same problem here. I just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I only got 19 GB of space, but Time Machine wants 10 hours, whereas in OSX Lion a full backup would take just under an hour, and incremental updates were lightning fast.
I even sat it up to do it overnight, but on 8 hours it was only half way through only 10 GB. I can't live with that in the future.
Im trying to backup on a SD card which seems to work very good in Lion. Im on a 2012 Macbook Air using a SSD.
My bite of the apple has been somewhat sour. I tried reformatting the SD card, well knowing that I would lose old backups. But still the backup is extremely slow. Now I can't install Lion or Mountain Lion from scratch without having to wait 10 hours for TM backup or installing tons of applications and settings again. Bummer. I'm never going to early adobt a OSX upgrade again.

  • RMAN BACKUP VERY SLOW

    Hi all,
what is fastest method to take backup using rman
    Thanks&Regards,
    Mahesh

    Hi Mahee,
Can you be little bit precise on you question?
    1. Is it you are planning to take backups using RMAN or your scheduled backups are running slow on RMAN?
    2. Please specify the type of backup.
I would first check with the network throughput and native transfer rate and compare them with the backup speed.
Also, tuning would largely depend on if you are using Synchronous and Asynchronous Disk I/O and thus enabling the db parameters for the same.
While the job is running, execute a script containing the following SQL statement to know the status of the RMAN job:
SELECT sid, serial#, context, sofar, totalwork,
    round(sofar/totalwork*100,2) "% Complete"
    FROM v$session_longops
    WHERE opname LIKE 'RMAN%'
    AND opname NOT LIKE '%aggregate%'
    AND totalwork != 0
    AND sofar <> totalwork
If you repeat the query while the backup progresses, then you see output such as the
    following:
    SQL> @status
SID SERIAL# CONTEXT SOFAR TOTALWORK % Complete
    8 19 1 10377 36617 28.34
    SQL> @status
SID SERIAL# CONTEXT SOFAR TOTALWORK % Complete
    8 19 1 21513 36617 58.75

    Uwe Hesse wrote:
It is very likely that you experience slow performance with ALTER DATABASE BEGIN BACKUP , because until you do ALTER DATABASE END BACKUP , every modified block is additionally written into the online logfiles . Doesn't that happen only the first time the block is modified?

The command was introduced for split mirror backups, when this period is very short. Else ALTER TABLESPACE ... BEGIN/END BACKUP for every tablespace one at a time reduces the amount of additional redo during non-RMAN Hot Backup. There appear to be only 4 files. We don't know how big or sparse they are.
    >
RMAN doesn't need that at all - much less redo - and also archive - generation then.
Furthermore, you can use BACKUP AS COMPRESSED BACKUPSET DATABASE to decrease the size of the backup even more - if space is an issue.
    In short: Use RMAN :-)
Agree with that! Unless the copy is actually going to an NFS mount or something, where I would be concerned whether it is the type of NFS that Oracle likes. I'd also advise a current patch set, as the OP didn't tell us the exact version, and I have this nagging unfocused memory of some compression problems of the "oh, I can't recover" variety.
I'd like to see some evidence on I/O and cpu usage before giving advice. When I used to copy files like this, it would choke out everyone else. RMAN was a savior, but had to wait for local SAN upgrade.

  • RMAN backup using OSB too slow

    Hi all,
We are exploring Oracle Secure Backup in our environment as legato networker alternative. But RMAN backup in OSB is very slow due to sbt wait event(sbtwrite2). it can backup 5GB/hour. We think this not normal behavior. we have checked network throughput between media server and client server. It can send 50 GB data by 30 min.Could you please help us to resolve the problem.

On my server, we needed to adjust the vmm on aix for oracle to run best. Before I did that it was really slow.
    http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/aix/library/au-aixoracle/index.html
Specifically these as outlined in the document linked above:
Listing 3. Changing the default setting for the lru_file_repage parameter using vmo
    root@lpar21ml16ed_pub[] > vmo -o lru_file_repage=0
    Setting lru_file_repage to 0
    root@lpar21ml16ed_pub[] >
Setting this to 0 tells the VMM that you want to steal only file pages and not computational pages. As this will change if the numperm < minperm or > maxperm, we will make maxperm high and minperm very low. Years ago, before the lru_file_repage parameter was introduced, we used to make maxperm low. If we did this now, we would stop the application caching programs that are currently running.
Listing 4 shows how we'll set these parameters:
Listing 4. Setting the minperm, maxperm and maxclient parameters
    vmo -p -o minperm%=5
    vmo -p -o maxperm%=90
    vmo -p -o maxclient%=90
We also want to take a look at minfree and maxfree. When the pages on our free list fall below minfree, the VMM will start to steal pages, which we don't want to happen until the free list has beefed up the number in maxfree. The values should be similar to the ones shown in Listing 5.
Listing 5. Setting the minfree and maxfree parameters
    vmo -p -o minfree=960
    vmo -p -o maxfree=1088

  • RMAN backups are slow with TSM

    Hi,
I encountered a problem using RMAN with TSM to backup a database. It seems that the RMAN channel doesn't use the entire bandwidth to the TSM (or whatever) and is idle most of the time. This makes the database backup really slow.
As a comparison, we backup also filesystem and SQL Server, they both use very few channels and each channel backup about X5 more data per second than Oracle. For example, SQL Server uses 5 channels to the TSM, and we get a total of around 100MB/s. When we configure Oracle to backup using 5 channels we get about 20MB/s and we see that the SQL Server is writing to the TSM all the time while Oracle is idle a large portion of the time.
    Any ideas? Known configuration issues?
I hope I'm clear about the problem.
    Thanks,
    Liron

    Hi,
Thanks for everybody for your responses, I'll try to sum the answers here:
    1. Yes, we backup the filesystem, and everything works fine. The problem is only with RMAN backups
    2. Resources are not an issue, it happens on strong and weak servers (and several O/S as well)
    3. Database versions are not the issue, it happens on 10.2 as well as 11.2
My feeling is that this has something to do with the integration, either oracle setting or TSM setting, but I can't be sure until I solve this.
For those of you who backup with TSM, did you notice that filesystem / SQL Servers are being backed up faster? Did you check the Oracle wait events and TSM status while you run the backup?
    Thanks
BTW Girish, great comment, I wish I had all the answers... :)

  • 4Th Generation Time Capsule Running Backup very Slow

I am having a problem with my 4th generation time capsule as it is running very slow , it shows that i need to backup 151 Gb data and for the last 2 days the device backup only 150 mb, pls advise what is the problem? setup of the wireless network seems fine to me without any problem
    please help

When you use ethernet, make sure your wireless is turned off in the computer.
It can be worthwhile isolating the TC to the Computer so there is nothing else happening.
Also for Mavericks ensure you have ipv6 set correctly to link-local.
A 100GB backup certainly should not take 20hours..
Although the 2008 (gen1 TC is much slower than later versions).
A first backup of the computer must deal with loads and loads of little files, as a warning can go slow.
A different backup software will be just the same.. it is the speed over network and handling small files that is the issue. Once that first backup is done the later incrementals should not be a problem though.

  • VERY slow backup to external Hard Drive

I have an older external HD case (New Motion) with a Western Digital 120GB Hard Drive that I use for backup, firewire only.
I use this drive on my old slot loading iMac G3 (10.3.8) and it runs very fast, copying 16GB from the iMac to the backupin about 15 minutes.
When I connect the backup drive to my G5 iMac (10.4.2) it runs VERY slow at night, taking 6 hours to copy the same amout of information.
I notice that during the day it takes less time, but still about 1.5 hours. (The night/day differences are consistent).
Is this an issue with Tiger or a setting in Tiger or how Tiger talks to firewire, or an issues with the G5 iMac? (Both firewire ports work fine with my iPod updating music).

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.
Check the drive with Disk Utility

I've never seen a drive take 20 minutes to mount.
