RMI or RTSP for Video Client/Server??????

I am about to write a media streaming server and client in Java using JMF. I would like to use RMI to control the media streams, however, RTSP looks like a good alternative. Can anyone here provide me with any pro's and con's to using either approach.
Thanks.

hi, i am currently working on a project that streams video via JMF. the protocol i used is RTSP... it seems quite ok with RTSP to stream local static files through the LAN (Wireless LAN).
by the way . i am asked to send 2 streams with different resolutions (screen sizes) for laptops and PDAs respectively.... do you have any idea to create the two streams >?

  • JMS architecture question for fat client/server.

    Hi. Is JMS suitable for fat client-server architecture where a certain number of fat client applications (like a few hundreds) open connections directly to the JMS provider? Is it going to have scalability problem when the number of connections grow?

    Depending on your JMS provider, this may be a very suitable architecture. The Sun MQ JMS Cluster was architected exactly for this problem. If the number of connections onto a single broker becomes too much of a burden for this broker, it can be put into an MQ cluster and share the number of connections. Of course, the number of connections a broker can handle will be totally dependent on the resources available to it. OS, CPU, memory, other applications running on the same machine, etc....

    Has the ODI same installable for both Client & Server?
    i.e. Team with multiple developers is concurrently working on ODI project. Repository is very much same. They just need the Designer Module in their desktop.
    Is there separate installable for development IDE for ODI (Designer Module) instead of complete ODI which may include the server also?

    Hi ,
    You can install only the client in multiple machine if multiple user are going use/share the same repository ... and you should be having the same
    snps_login_work.xml
    snps_login_security.xml
    in all your client installations....so that you can have multiple users created and share the same repositroy ...
    hope this helps

  • Looking for a client/server that supports multiple protocol and delivery

    Hi all, I don't know if this the right place to ask my question,here it goes.
    I am looking to develop a client-server that supports multiple protocols such as HTTP, HTTPS etc. I am looking for a framework( i don't know if that is correct or I need some kind of web-service (soap etc)) that would manage connection, security etc. I would like to like to devote most of my time in developing business objects with multiple delivery mechanism such as sending serilized java objects, xml message or soap message, or in some case JMS message as well. So I need a client server that can come in via TCP/IP or HTTP or anyother industry standard protocol and I should be able to service him with pub/sub model and also request/response model as well.
    I don't know if I had explained what I need, I would like to know what technologies I should be evaluating and which direction I should be heading... Also the server I'm developing should be free of Java constraints if needed...
    Also this service is not webbased service as now but if need arises I should have a flexibilty to make them web enabled in future. Also I would like to work with open source webservers or appservers if I need

    "i3 was created because wmii, our favorite window manager at the time, didn't provide some features we wanted (multi-monitor done right, for example), had some bugs, didn't progress since quite some time and wasn't easy to hack at all (source code comments/documentation completely lacking). Still, we think the wmii developers and contributors did a great job. Thank you for inspiring us to create i3. "
    To change the border of the current client, you can use bn to use the normal border (including window title), bp to use a 1-pixel border (no window title) and bb to make the client borderless. There is also bt  which will toggle the different border styles.
    Examples:
    bindsym Mod1+t bn
    bindsym Mod1+y bp
    bindsym Mod1+u bb
    or put in your config file
    new_window bb

  • Design Pattern for multithreaded client server program

    I asked this question in another post, but with other stuff, so I'll distill this one.
    I am creating a multi-threaded client server program (just for learning - a chat program at this point). I built the server and client in swing, and I'm wondering what the best design pattern is for this setup. Right now all the swing stuff is in the MyServer class. In that class I have a loop accepting client connections to the serverSocket and creating a new MyServerThread (threaded client connection).
    The problem is that all the work of creating input streams, interacting with the server, all that stuff is done in the MyServerThread class, but I want that text to be written up to the Swing objects - which is in the MyServer class. So right now in the MyServerThread class I pass the MyServer object into it, but I'm not sure if that is really the most robust thing to do. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how this should be done. If somebody has an article they'd like to point to I'll check it out too. But if it's just the run-of-the-mill multithreaded client-server article, I've read alot and most don't specifically address my question.

    Thanks for the reply Kaj, and I think I'll keep my design for now, since it's just quick and dirty. I've read the MVC concept a while ago and I'll revisit it again when I get more serious. But I have a question, why should I be using a callback interface, why an interface at all? And then make MyServer implement that interface...why not just pass MyServer to the thread object? Or is there something down the line that I did not forsee?

  • Client/server vs. Application Server

    Our company has around 30 sites with each one having its own Oracle database server and file server (repository for executables of Forms6i/Reports6i). All the sites have the same applications running, i.e., the same set of programs are replicated to each site. At present we are running the applications in client/server mode (Forms6i/Reports6i runtime is installed on each client machine).
    We are also using some third party modules developed in VB/VC++.
    Now we are looking for the Centralized Solution, i.e., We want to have a Single Database Server available to all the sites all the sites are already linked with Network Leased lines).
    Now we want to know the impact of running centralized file server (located at Corporate Office site) accessible from all the sites (through same client/server mode).
    Will this solution work for us or we should move to 3-tier mode? Please suggest us the best feasible solution which can be implemented as early as possible.
    What I mean to ask in the question above is: if a good intranet connectivity is available among sites, what would be the better approach, client/server or n-tier?
    What actually would we gain by using application server in this context? Does the Data travelling is reduced from Database Server through to the Client Node in 3-tier AS approach? Does this 3-tier approach will reduce the Burden on Leased Lines? Does we gain more network resources available in 3-tier?
    What I think is that in client/server mode, the data is travelled from Database Server to Client Machine, but using Application Server, the Data from Database Server will travel upto Application Server and NOT to the Cleint machine (on browser etc.), hence reducing Network Load.
    Please clarify as your input makes a valuable role in our decision-making.

    Hello,
    I'll take a stab at this one...
    If you have enough network bandwidth, you should be fine funning in client/server mode. I have worked with clients with this same configuration. In addition to having a centralized DB, we have also centralized the forms on a network drive allowing users to access the same files and removing the need for users having to update their files locally. The biggest problem I see with this configuration, as long as you have enough band width, is that your configuration is not supported as 6i has been desupported.
    From my perspective you really don't have any choice but to upgrade your application so that you can be supported. The good news is that for the clients we have worked with upgrades have gone very smoothly. In fact recently we have started to partner with another vendor that has a tool specifically designed to upgrade Oracle Forms and it includes additional features above and beyond what you get from Oracle. This tool has drastically reduced the amount of time to complete upgrades (like going from a 2 year project to just a few weeks).
    I hate to answer this question because it is hard to answer without really getting into the details with you. The good news is once you do have a centralized DB and centralized application maintenance will be significantly easier.
    One last option you might consider that our company has done is to use Citrix. I've never used it for Oracle Forms, but for other client/server applications it has allowed out clients to web enabled their existing applications without changing them at all and also get a boost in performance. I wouldn't recommend this approach to you because what you have should be short term until you get your forms/reports upgraded.
    If you have any specific questions I can try and answer them for you. Good luck and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

         a1 = rs.getInt(1);
         a2 = rs.getInt(2);
         if( i%8000==0) {
         System.out.println("select "+ i +" res="+a1 +" time " + getTime_v2());
         rs.close();
    direct mode time : 80000 query is 2 second
    client/server mode in the same machine : 80000 query is 12 second
    client/server mode in the different machine : 80000 query is 54 second
    any one have idea about this?
    is it the jdbc driver 's promble?

    it is to be expected that there will be a big difference in performance between direct mode and client/server due to much greater overhead in client/server, especially if the client is on a different machine. However, the differences you are seeing here are larger than I would normally expect.
    You say (I think) that the network is 1 GB, correct? What is the hardware spec of the test machine(s)? Have you tuned the O/S network stack for optimal performance?
    Typically, for local client/server using the fastest IPC mode (shmipc) I expect performance of around 20-30% of direct mode and for remote client/server with a GB LAN I would expect performance of around 10-20% of direct mode.

  • Client/server/web application

    My application will be deployed as client/server application and as well as web application. An database is used to keep the persistent data.
    For the client/server environment, I will need client tier, application server tier, and the database tier. For the web applicaiton, I will need web interface, web server, and the database tier.
    My question is that since the application will be deployed as both client/server application and web application, how to leverage the components, so the application server and the web server has less code duplication.
    Is there any guideline for designing such an architecture?
    The application uses J2SE, and Tomcat is the servlet engine.
    Thanks for any input /danclemson

    Your business logic should be written so that it can used from anywhere. Command line, GUI, webapp, it's irrelevant. Likewise with the db layer, so those will be exactly the same. Then you just put whatever front end you want on it. Now, if you're talking about having the same server used for both at the same time, that's a different question. But it sounds like you're asking about code.

  • JMF - client server video streaming how to stop

    Hi
    I am able to stream video from a server to multiple clients using AVReceive2 and AVTransmit2 from the JMF site.
    Iam developing a client server project. I have modified the above code such that Iam able to start and stream the videos by calling on servlets and socket connections.
    The AVTransmit2 code does not however have a stop button and it uses a thread.sleep method. I do not know how to add a stop button in the GUI on AVReceive2 to call on AVTransmit2.
    I am using sockets to communicate to and from the server. Do i have to use RMI or is there another easier way to call stop from the client which would stop the transmission on the server?
    Also, after the video file has been successfully streamed, when I refresh and try to connect again, the server is invoked and __it starts transmission_,_ but the servlet which calls the AVReceive fails and the frame does not show. Any possible reasons why?
    Thanks in advance.

    I don't know the speed of the connection.

    .11b or .11g I don't know.
    microwave nearby - I don't know
    5-6 other wifis - yes
    I will try Safari, thanks!
    Thanks for the update. The speed of the Wi-Fi in the
    coffee shop will depend on many factors. What is the
    speed of their connection to the Internet? How many
    people are sharing the Wi-Fi? Is it 802.11b or
    802.11g? Do they have a microwave operating nearby?
    That will often interfere. Are there additional Wi-Fi
    networks nearby? That can interfere as well. It's
    possible that it was their network that's causing
    your trouble. But, to rule that out, did you try
    using Safari instead? You might make sure you have an
    up-to-date version of the Flash player which you can
    get at http://www.adobe.com
    I have Clearwire
    at home, it's basically like wireless DSL. It's not
    as fast as cable Internet access, but it is portable.
    I only mentioned it because it would indicate that
    you don't need cable speed to watch the videos
    without buffering.

  • Client/server RMI app using Command pattern: return values and exceptions

    I'm developing a client/server java app via RMI. Actually I'm using the cajo framework overtop RMI (any cajo devs/users here?). Anyways, there is a lot of functionality the server needs to expose, all of which is split and encapsulated in manager-type classes that the server has access to. I get the feeling though that bad things will happen to me in my sleep if I just expose instances of the managers, and I really don't like the idea of writing 24682763845 methods that the server needs to individually expose, so instead I'm using the Command pattern (writing 24682763845 individual MyCommand classes is only slightly better). I haven't used the command pattern since school, so maybe I'm missing something, but I'm finding it to be messy. Here's the setup: I've got a public abstract Command which holds information about which user is attempting to execute the command, and when, and lots of public MyCommands extending Command, each with a mandatory execute() method which does the actual dirty work of talking to the model-functionality managers. The server has a command invoker executeCommand(Command cmd) which checks the authenticity of the user prior to executing the command.
    What I'm interested in is return values and exceptions. I'm not sure if these things really fit in with a true command pattern in general, but it sure would be nice to have return values and exceptions, even if only for the sake of error detection.
    First, return values. I'd like each Command to return a result, even if it's just boolean true if nothing went wrong, so in my Command class I have a private Object result with a protected setter, public getter. The idea is, in the execute() method, after doing what needs to be done, setResult(someResult) is called. The invoker on the server, after running acommand.execute() eventually returns acommand.getResult(), which of course is casted by the client into whatever it should be. I don't see a way to do this using generics though, because I don't see a way to have the invoker's return value as anything other than Object. Suggestions? All this means is, if the client were sending a GetUserCommand cmd I'd have to cast like User user = (User)server.executeCommand(cmd), or sending an AssignWidgetToGroup cmd I'd have to cast like Boolean result = (Boolean)server.executeCommand(cmd). I guess that's not too bad, but can this be done better?
    Second, exceptions. I can have the Command's execute() method throw Exception, and the server's invoker method can in turn throw that Exception. Problem is, with a try/catch on the client side, using RMI (or is this just a product of cajo?) ensures that any exception thrown by a remote method will come back as a java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException. So for example, if in MyCommand.execute() I throw new MySpecialException, the server's command invoker method will in turn throw the same exception, however the try/catch on the client side will catch InvocationTargetException e. If I do e.getCause().printStackTrace(), THERE be my precious MySpecialException. But how do I catch it? Can it be caught? Nested try/catch won't work, because I can't re-throw the cause of the original exception. For now, instead of throwing exceptions the server is simply returning null if things don't go as planned, meaning on the client side I would do something like if ((result = server.executeCommand(cmd)) == null) { /* deal with it */ } else { /* process result, continue normally */ }.
    So using the command pattern, although doing neat things for me like centralizing access to the server via one command-invoking method which avoids exposing a billion others, and making it easy to log who's running what and when, causes me null-checks, casting, and no obvious way of error-catching. I'd be grateful if anyone can share their thoughts/experiences on what I'm trying to do. I'll post some of my code tomorrow to give things more tangible perspective.

    First of all, thanks for taking the time to read, I know it's long.
    Secondly, pardon me, but I don't see how you've understood that I wasn't going to or didn't want to use exceptions, considering half my post is regarding how I can use exceptions in my situation. My love for exception handling transcends time and space, I assure you, that's why I made this thread.
    Also, you've essentially told me "use exceptions", "use exceptions", and "you can't really use exceptions". Having a nested try/catch anytime I want to catch the real exception does indeed sound terribly weak. Just so I'm on the same page though, how can I catch an exception, and throw the cause?
    try {
    catch (Exception e) {
         Throwable t = e.getCause();
         // now what?
    }Actually, nested try/catches everywhere is not happening, which means I'm probably going to ditch cajo unless there's some way to really throw the proper exception. I must say however that cajo has done everything I've needed up until now.
    Anyways, what I'd like to know is...what's really The Right Way (tm) of putting together this kind of client/server app? I've been thinking that perhaps RMI is not the way to go, and I'm wondering if I should be looking into more of a cross-language RPC solution. I definitely do want to neatly decouple the client from server, and the command pattern did seem to do that, but maybe it's not the best solution.
    Thanks again for your response, ejp, and as always any comments and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
