Routing and failover

Please help me to find information about failover in routing. In our new system it will be data depending routing, but I can't find information how Tuxedo resolve problem when, for example, one machine in routing list is unreachable, is there any capability in Tuxedo to re-route information to another machine? Maybe I can't understand some basics in Tuxedo, please turn me to right way :). Thanks.

Hi Vjacheslav,
Data Dependent Routing (DDR) works from top to bottom as far as the RANGE entry is concerned - as soon as a match is found the BB is interrogated to see if the specified group is active, and if so the message is routed to a server in that group and DDR goes no further; if the group is not active then processing falls through to check the next range. So in your particular case you could create a range entry similar to the following:
RANGES="'AAA' - 'FFF':GRP1, 'AAA' - 'FFF':GRP2"
If you are matching "BBB", for example, and the machine hosting GRP1 is unavailable then routing to that group will fail (even though there was a data match). A comparison is then done on the next entry (which also matches) and if GRP2 is active the message will be routed to a server in that group. If GRP1 is active then the message is routed to a GRP1 server, and the GRP2 possibility is not even considered.
Note that load balancing plays no part in DDR - this choice of server group is made as described above and only then will load balancing be applied (assuming there is more than one server in the selected group offering the service).
You can find more information on DDR at the following link:

Hope this helps,
Best Regards,
Malcolm.

  • Is it possible in IOS to have two static routes for the same subnet, one a higher priority and "failover" between the 2?

    Hi All
Is it possible in IOS to have for a particular subnet:
    a) Two static routes?
    b) Make one static route a higher priority than the other?
    c) If one static router "goes down", failover to the lower priority static route?
We have a l2tp/vpdn connection to a supplier which can be accessed via two vlans/routes. I would like to make one route the preferred one but the "route" to failover if the preferred route goes down.
Again, many thanks in advance for all responses!
    Thanks
    John

    Hi John,
Hope the below explaination will help you...
    R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 2.2.2.2
    R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 3.3.3.3 10
If you notice the Administrative Distance for the secondary route pointing to ISP2 is increased to 10 so that it becomes the backup link.
The above configuration with just two floating static routes partially accomplishes our requirement as it will work only in the scenario where the routers interfaces connected to the WAN link are in up/down or down/down status. But in a lot of situations we see that even though the links remain up but we are not able to reach the gateway, this usually happens when the issue is at the ISP side.
In such scenarios, IP SLAs becomes an engineer's best friend. With around six additional IOS commands we can have a more reliable automatic failover environment.
Using IP SLA the Cisco IOS gets the ability to use Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) pings to identify when a WAN link goes down at the remote end and hence allows the initiation of a backup connection from an alternative port. The Reliable Static Routing Backup using Object Tracking feature can ensure reliable backup in the case of several catastrophic events, such as Internet circuit failure or peer device failure.
IP SLA is configured to ping a target, such as a publicly routable IP address or a target inside the corporate network or your next-hop IP on the ISP's router. The pings are routed from the primary interface only. Following a sample configuration of IP SLA to generate icmp ping targeted at the ISP1s next-hop IP.
    R1(config)# ip sla 1
    R1(config)# icmp-echo 2.2.2.2 source-interface FastEthernet0/0
    R1(config)# timeout 1000
    R1(config)# threshold 2
    R1(config)# frequency 3
R1(config)# ip sla schedule 1 life forever start-time now
The above configuration defines and starts an IP SLA probe.
The ICMP Echo probe sends an ICMP Echo packet to next-hop IP 2.2.2.2 every 3 seconds, as defined by the “frequency” parameter.
Timeout sets the amount of time (in milliseconds) for which the Cisco IOS IP SLAs operation waits for a response from its request packet.
Threshold sets the rising threshold that generates a reaction event and stores history information for the Cisco IOS IP SLAs operation.
After defining the IP SLA operation our next step is to define an object that tracks the SLA probe. This can be accomplished by using the IOS Track Object as shown below:
    R1(config)# track 1 ip sla 1 reachability
The above command will track the state of the IP SLA operation. If there are no ping responses from the next-hop IP the track will go down and it will come up when the ip sla operation starts receiving ping response.
To verify the track status use the use the “show track” command as shown below:
    R1# show track
    Track 1
    IP SLA 1 reachability
    Reachability is Down
    1 change, last change 00:03:19
    Latest operation return code: Unknown
The above output shows that the track status is down. Every IP SLAs operation maintains an operation return-code value. This return code is interpreted by the tracking process. The return code may return OK, OverThreshold, and several other return codes.
Different operations may have different return-code values, so only values common to all operation types are used. The below table shows the track states as per the IP SLA return code.
    Tracking
    Return Code
    Track State
    Reachability
    OK or over threshold
    (all other return codes)
    Up
    Down
The Last step in the IP SLA Reliable Static Route configuration is to add the “track” statement to the default routes pointing to the ISP routers as shown below:
    R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 2.2.2.2 track 1
    R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 3.3.3.3 10
The track number keyword and argument combination specifies that the static route will be installed only if the state of the configured track object is up. Hence if the track status is down the secondary route will be used to forward all the traffic.
    Please rate the helpfull posts.

    Naidu.

  • SMTP Routes, DNS and Failover

    Hi !
I'm configuring an outgoing server (i.e. only a private listener) on ESA C370 with AsyncOS 8.0.1.
I use the Internet's Root DNS Servers, and my default SMTP route is empty. My ESA is connected to 3 networks : production (default gateway), administration and failover (1 interface/network).
I would like to deploy a failover solution with an extra ESA on the failover network : if I lose my internet connection (impossible to join DNS and remote MX), my ESA would redirect all its mails to the extra ESA.
How can I do that ?
    Thank you for your help.
    Best Regards
    Quentin

The ESA has no way to automatically fallback to a static IP if DNS in unreachable.  The best on-box solution I can suggest is manually changing the 'All Other Domains' SMTP Routes entry when such an event occurs.
    I hope this helps!

  • Dynamic Routing for Failover L2L VPN

    Hi,
Can someone offer me some guidance with this issue please?
I've attached a simple diagram of our WAN for reference.
    Overview
Firewall is ASA 5510 running 8.4(9)
Core network at Head Office uses OSPF
Static routes on ASA are redistributed into OSPF
Static routes on ASA for VPN are redistributed into OSPF with Metric of 130 so redistributed BGP routes are preferred
Core network has a static route of 10.0.0.0/8 to Corporate WAN, which is redistributed into OSPF
Branch Office WAN uses BGP - Routes are redistributed into OSPF
The routers at the Branch Office use VRRP for IP redundancy for the local clients default gateway.
Primary Branch Office router will pass off VRRP IP to backup router when the WAN interface is down
Backup BO router (.253) only contains a default route to internet
Under normal operation, traffic to/from BO uses Local Branch Office WAN
If local BO WAN link fails, traffic to/from BO uses IPSec VPN across public internet
I'm trying to configure dynamic routing on our network for when a branch office fails over to the IPsec VPN. What I would like to happen (not sure if it's possible) is for the ASA to advertise the subnet at the remote end of the VPN back into OSPF at the Head Office.
I've managed to get this to work using RRI, but for some reason the VPN stays up all the time when we're not in a failover scenario. This causes the ASA to add the remote subnet into it's routing table as a Static route, and not use the route advertised from OSPF from the core network. This prevents clients at the BO from accessing the Internet. If I remove the RRI setting on the VPN, the ASA learns the route to the subnet via the BO WAN - normal operation is resumed.
I have configured the metric of the static routes that get redistributed into OSPF by the ASA to be higher than 110. This is so that the routes redistributed by BGP from the BO WAN into OSPF, are preferred. The idea being, that when the WAN link is available again, the routing changes automatically and the site fails back to the BO WAN.
I suppose what I need to know is; Is this design feasible, and if so where am I going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
your ASA keeps the tunnel alive only because that route exists on ASA.  Therefore you have to use IP-SLA on ASA to push network taffic "10.10.10.0/24" based on the echo-reply, by using IP-SLA
Please look at example below, in the example below shows the traffic will flow via the tunnel, only in the event the ASA cannot reach network 10.10.10.0/24 via HQ internal network.
This config will go on ASA,
    route inside 10.10.10.0 255.255.2550 10.0.0.2 track 10
(assuming 10.0.0.2 the peering ip of inside ip address of router at HO)
    route outside 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 254 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(value 254 is higher cost of the route to go via IPSec tunnel and x =  to default-gateway of ISP)
    sla monitor 99
type echo protocol ipIcmpEcho 10.10.10.254 interface inside
    num-packets 3
    frequency 10
sla monitor schedule 99 life forever start-time now
    track 10 rtr 99 reachability
Let me know, if this helps.
    thanks

  • Redundancy and Failover setup for 2 MPLS link with 2 different countries

    Hi Sir/Madam,
We have 2 MPLS link and both links are active (from COUNTRY A to COUNTRY B) and we also have 2 partners who are located in COUNTRY B with same building but with different offices and each partner will be using each MPLS link.  For example, PARTNER A will use the 1st MPLS link and PARTNER B will use the 2nd MPLS link and we want to have a failover setup (please see sample design below).  What is the best solution for COUNTRY A and B to have a full redundancy and failover setup/network?
Any recommendation and sample configuration will be a big help for me.   Your feedback is highly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,
    Marvin

MPLS links, eh.  You mean your MPLS facing ports have actual MPLS labels?  Or do you mean your WAN links are running across a MPLS network, but the handoff isn't MPLS?
Country A's two routers are your company's devices?  Do you have interior connectivity between them?
Country B's two routers - do they or can they have interior connectivity?
What routing protocols are being used (and where)?

SNC connection from SAP GUI to SAP Router, and non-SNC connection from SAP Router to SAP System.
I know how to set up scenario like this:
    SAP System --- (non-SNC conn) --- saprouter1 --- (SNC conn) --- saprouter2 --- (non-SNC conn) --- SAP GUI.
    Best regards,
    Marek Majchrowski

    Wolfgang,
To be sure myself and Marek understand, can you confirm the different scenarios supported:
    Scenario 1:
    SAP GUI --- (non SNC conn) --- saprouter1 --- (SNC conn) --- saprouter2 --- (non-SNC conn) --- SAP System
With this scenario, it would be possible for a user to logon using SAP GUI onto the SAP System, but without SAP GUI SNC.
    Scenario 2:
    SAP GUI --- (SNC conn) --- saprouter1 --- (non SNC conn) --- saprouter2 --- (SNC conn) --- SAP System
With this scenario it would be possible to logon to the SAP System using SAP GUI, and using SNC authentication.
Also, with this scenario the SAP GUI software and SAP System software would consider this to be similar to:
SAP GUI -- (SNC conn) -- SAP System
    Scenario 3:
This is the scenario mentioned by Marek in his initial question:
SAP GUI -- (SNC conn) -- saprouter1 -- (non SNC conn) -- SAP System
With this scenario it will not be possible to logon to SAP System using SNC, and only possible if the SAP GUI is configured to not use SNC. In other words the SNC connection between SAP GUI and saprouter1 is available, but cannot be used.
    Thanks,
    Tim

  • Default static route and Null 0

    Hi Everyone,
Need to clear some doubts  for below setup
Switch 3550A is connected to Internet Router and has OSPF nei relationship with it.
    3550A#                      sh run int fa0/11
    Building configuration...
    Current configuration : 272 bytes
    interface FastEthernet0/11
description OSPF LAN Connection to 2691 Router Interface Fas 0/1
     no switchport
     ip address 192.168.5.2 255.255.255.254
    sh ip route shows
    3550A#sh ip route
Gateway of last resort is 192.168.5.3 to network 0.0.0.0
    O*E2 0.0.0.0/0 [110/1] via 192.168.5.3, 20:39:56, FastEthernet0/11
    3550A#
    All is working fine.
For testing  purposes i config below static route on 3550A
    ip default-network 192.168.1.0
    ip route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 Null0
    After above change
    3550A#           sh ip route
    Codes: C - connected, S - static, R - RIP, M - mobile, B - BGP
D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area
           N1 - OSPF NSSA external type 1, N2 - OSPF NSSA external type 2
           E1 - OSPF external type 1, E2 - OSPF external type 2
           i - IS-IS, su - IS-IS summary, L1 - IS-IS level-1, L2 - IS-IS level-2
           ia - IS-IS inter area, * - candidate default, U - per-user static route
           o - ODR, P - periodic downloaded static route
Gateway of last resort is not set
    S*   192.168.1.0/24 is directly connected, Null0
    O*E2 0.0.0.0/0 [110/1] via 192.168.5.3, 20:38:38, FastEthernet0/11
Now i can not ping to internet as below
    3550A#ping 4.2.2.2
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 4.2.2.2, timeout is 2 seconds:
Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)
When we ping from Switch then source IP is always the Outside interface IP right?
So in this case Switch is using which IP as source?
Ping to internet is not working as default network is set to 192.168.1.0 and all request goes to this IP and then it goes to
    Null interface right?
Extended ping works fine as below
    3550A#ping
    Protocol [ip]:
    Target IP address: 4.2.2.2
    Repeat count [5]:
    Datagram size [100]:
    Timeout in seconds [2]:
    Extended commands [n]: y
    Source address or interface: 192.168.5.2
    Type of service [0]:
Set DF bit in IP header? [no]:
    Validate reply data? [no]:
    Data pattern [0xABCD]:
    Loose, Strict, Record, Timestamp, Verbose[none]:
    Sweep range of sizes [n]:
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 4.2.2.2, timeout is 2 seconds:
Packet sent with a source address of 192.168.5.2
    Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 76/79/80 ms
Second thing to confirm is this ping works because 192.168.5.2 is directly connected to Internet Router interface?
    Regards
    MAhesh

    Hi Mahesh,
When we ping from Switch then source IP is always the Outside interface IP right?
That is correct.  By default it is always the outgoing interface on the device unless you specify it differently.
Ping to internet is not working as default network is set to 192.168.1.0 and all request goes to this IP and then it goes to
    Null interface right?
That is correct. Null0 can't be used as next-hop.
Second thing to confirm is this ping works because 192.168.5.2 is directly connected to Internet Router interface?
No, that is because 192.168.5.0/30 is NATed. Remember 192.168.x.x address is a private segment and cannot access the Internet unless NAT is used.

  • How do I configure my AirPort Extreme as a wireless access point?  My cable modem goes to a router, and one of those ports goes to my AirPortExtreme.

I am about to hook up my airport extreme.  My cable modem goes into a router, and one of those ports will supply my airport extreme.  I was told by the Apple Store that I would need to configure my airport extreme as a wirreless access point.  How do I do this?

With sbcgobal I got a Gateway 2wire modem. What I would like to know is how do I set up my APE as remote?
Unfortunately, you won't be able to do this as few non-AirPort routers will work with AirPorts in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

  • HT3180 The internet provider reset my router and now my apple Tv does not work in netflix i get ATV-ui10 error and when i perform a network test it works fine but no movies are coming up on the screen and you cannot select anything.

The internet provider reset my router and now I cannot use Apple Tv.  I tired restore and reseting the apple tv and the Network test is fine.  Netflix shows error atv-ui10 and you no movies come up it just shoes black tickets at the top of the screen and says i am not connect.  Internet works fine.

Delete/forget the network connection on the ATV and reconnect to the network.
    Power cycle the router.

  • Site to Site VPN Problems With 2801 Router and ASA 5505

I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro running on OS 10.8.2 to a Linksys EA3500 router and when I go to click on the set up icon I get an "unsupported operating system". Any suggestions on what to do? The Linksys site is useless. Do I need some kind of upgrade?

Don't use the CD software its not necessary.
Infact put it in the trash.
Your router will have an IP address in the range 192.168.1.1
Connect your router to your Mac via Ethernet cable (They usually supply one with the router and don't worry which end goes where the Mac LAN socket is bi-directional)
Also connect your router to your telephone line.
Now open your Web browser Safari . Type in the IP address above and a Javascript control panel will launch
Enter the default password and username (They are on a label on the router )
Your now have the ability to set up your router.
Your will need the password and user name supplied to you by your ISP at a minimum.
Enter these and most modern routers automatically configure the basic networking setting.
You now need to go to the security setting and set this as WPA2 Personal (NOT Enterprise) or WPA2 with AES and TKIP which ever it refers to and create a pass-phase. WRITE it down
    You should be online.
Now remove the cable and connect to the Wifi and enter that passphase.

  • Can I use Extreme with Time Capsule to extend my gateway router and still use Capsule as "external HD"?

Bought Airport Extreme with Time Capsule version 7.7.2 with 2 Terabytes Feb 2014. It was probably an expensive mistake, but after searching for weeks for a external hard drive, it seemed reasonably priced to just use the capsule as my external hard drive for the price I paid. Spend an hour with Apple Care to get it working-had to use ethernet cord to my iMac OS 10.8.5 processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5. I did not "need" the airport as we have a Winstream SAGEMCOM modem/router (Sagemfast 1704) But, I was desperate and about to lose my old external hard drive with literally had 3 computers worth of information on it. It had already "died" once, but got it back, so once I got the airport/capsule and was told I just paid for an expensive HD, I had no time to take it back to get something else-I had to transfer my info right then. We (Apple Care) could not get it to work as a HD wirelessly. It may be because it was being set up for the first time; I don't know. I was hoping I would get a transcript of all done so I could do it myself if needed later on, but when I looked at my email-they didn't do that. (Don't know if that is normal, I was used to other "techs" sending the email.) So now I really want to try to move my airport and "extend" our wifi as it said on the "box" that you could do...
Our Windstream router had to be placed in the lower level at the bottom of our stairs. The stairway is "open" (no door going down the steps). I want to place the Extreme at the top of the stairs so that we can use some things in our offices or not have Netflix on our TV lose connectivity when we all are on our computers.
I know I need an ethernet cord to connect directly with the modem/router to the Airport Extreme.  I don't know what I will need to do after I connect it as it was so goofy when we set it up the first time (With the app it would disappear and not show up..) But my biggest concern is will I be able to still use the capsule as my hard drive and will I be able to do it wirelessly? (Even with it connected by ethernet, every day I have to re-connect to it before I can click on anything on the hard drive. It never shows up on it's own as my old HD did. That drives me nuts.) I do back up using the Time Capsule feature as well. I appreciate any help.

I am still willing to plug in the ethernet cord to the modem/router and try it IF I was able to get a step by step instructions..
Connecting the Time Capsule (TC) to the existing Winstream by Ethernet would be the basis for a roaming type network. This type of network allows you to basically "roam" with a wireless client and connect to either router. This, in essence, would provide you with an "extended" wireless network. The Apple routers can work with just about any manufacturers' routers in this fashion.
The keys to having a successful roaming network are as follows:
The routers must be interconnected by Ethernet.
Both routers will broadcast their own Wi-Fi network, but MUST use the same Network Name (or SSID), wireless security type (WPA or WPA2), and wireless password.
The TC MUST be reconfigured as a bridge.
Connect a single Ethernet cable between one of the Winstream's LAN ports and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the TC.
    The basic steps are:
    Power-down the Winstream.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the TC. Leave the TC powered-down after the reset has completed.
Connect the TC to the Winstream using an Ethernet cable.
Power-up the Winstream. Wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it to initialize.
Power-up the TC. Wait at least 5 minutes to allow it to initialize. (Note: Since we just reset the TC it will be performing as a wireless router that will be broadcasting an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN)
Connect your computer to the Winstream's Wi-Fi network.
Run the AirPort Utility. select the TC, and then, select Edit.
    Go to the Network tab.
Change the Router Mode option to: Off (Bridge Mode)
    Select the Wireless tab.
Verify that the Network Mode option is set to: Create a wireless network
For Wireless Network Name, enter the Wi-Fi network name used by the Winstream.
For Wireless Security, select the equivalent security type that is used by the Winstream. (Note: Use "WPA/WPA2 Personal" if the Winstream is using WPA/TKIP. Use "WPA2 Personal" is the Winstream is using WPA2/AES.
For Wireless Password, enter the same password used by the Winstream.
Select Update and allow the TC to restart.
As far as your external HD, yes you should still be able to use it as before.

  • RE: Hard Failures, KeepAlive, and Failover --Follow-up

    Hi,
It's a really challenging question. However, what do you want to do after
the network crash? Failover or just stop the service? Should we assume
that when the network is down, and so do your name service?
One idea is to use externalconnection to "listen" to your external non-forte
alarm, so do "whatever" after you receive the alarm instead of letting the
"logical connection" to time out or hang.
    Regards,
    Peter Sham.

Subject: Hard Failures, KeepAlive, and Failover -- Follow-up
I've gotten a handful of responses to my original post, and the suggested
solutions are all variations on the same theme -- periodically ping remote
nodes/partitions and then react when the node/partition goes down. In
other circumstance this would work, but unless I'm missing something this
solution doesn't solve the problem I'm running into.
    Some background...
When a connection is set up between partitions on two different nodes,
Forte is effectively establishing two connections: a "physical
    connection"
over TCP/IP between two ports and a "logical connection" between the two
partitions (running on top of the physical connection). Once a connection
is established between two partitions Forte assumes the logical connection
is valid until one of two things happen:
    1) The logical connection is broken (by shutting down a partition from
Econsole/Escript, by killing a node manager, by terminating the ftexec,
    etc.)
    2) Forte detects that the physical connection is broken (via its KeepAlive
    functionality).
If a physical connection is broken (via a cut cable or power-off
condition), and Forte has not yet detected the situation (via a KeepAlive
failure), the logical connection is still valid and Forte will still allow
method calls on the remote partition. In effect, Forte thinks the remote
partition is still up and running. In this situation, any method calls
made after the physical connection has been broken will simply hang. No
exceptions are generated and failover does not occur.
However, once a KeepAlive failure is detected all is made right.
Unfortunately, the lowest-bound latency of KeepAlive is greater than one
second, and we need to detect and react to hard failures in the 250-500ms
range. Using technology outside of Forte we are able to detect the hard
failures within the required times, but we haven't been able to get Forte
to react to this "outside" knowledge. Here's why:
Since Forte has not yet detected a KeepAlive failure, the logical
connection to the remote partition is still "valid". Although there are a
number of mechanisms that would allow a logical connection to be broken,
they all assume a valid physical connection -- which, of course, we don't
    have!
It appears I'm in a "Catch-22" situation: In order to break a logical
connection between partitions, I need a valid physical connection. But
    the
reason I'm trying to break the logical connection in the first place is
that I know (but Forte doesn't yet know) that the physical connection has
    been broken.
If anyone knows a way around this Catch-22, please let me know.
    Mike

Make sure you chose the right format, and as far as partitioning in concerned, you have to select at least one partition, which will be the entire drive.

MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?
