RT Spectrum Analyzer and Fluctuating Signal reading

Hi There,
I am just wondering if anyone can help me. I am quite new to LabVIEW. My first problem is that the input coming in from my cRIO is fluctuating. Basically my setup is thus: a cRIO, an NI 9205 module, a geophone. When I try to take RT data in and show on a graph it fluctuates. I have attached a printscrn of it. It appears like a sine wave.
My main question is, I am wondering if there is any way in LabVIEW to analyze an acoustic signal in RT with a spectrogram? I have looked around online and there seems to be ways of doing it but there are just videos and pages demonstrating the results rather than how to go about creating a RT spectrogram.
Perhaps someone might be able to point me in the right direction?

Hi kelOb,
Spectrogram is a set of advanced signal processing functions which are quite complicated and cannot be used in real time VI because the determinism of real time application. Hence you will need two vis in your project: one host vi which will run in windows dealing with signal processing and one cRIO vi which run in the cRIO hardware only to acquire data. The bridge between the host VI and the cRIO VI is the network published RT FIFO, which is similar to a queue but can be used to transfer data between Vis.
Attached is an example project showing you how to analyse the RT data in spectrogram.
If you have any other concerns please let me know.

The typical way to make a measurement on any instrument is as follows:
    1.  setup the instrument for the measurement.
    2.  carry out the measurement.
    3.  store result in a file
    1. In this case, you want to setup the instrument to carry out a frequency measurement.  Although I am not familiar with the Advantest SA, I'm sure it should be similar to the Agilent or Rohde & Schwarz SA.  So you first need to set the span wide enough to find the Center Frequency that you want to measure.  Then place a peak marker and set the center to the peak value.  You then narrow the span in order to improve your measurement.  Most likely adjust your resolution (BW) and place a peak marker.  You have now setup the instrument for the measurement.  The example should contain what you need to accomplish this.  Otherwise the user manual should give you the instructions on how to create the commands.
    2. You can read the values associated with the marker which will give you the frequency and amplitude.  There should be seperate instructions for these.  So you can read the frequency by itself.  There should be an example of this as it is a very basic measurement.
    3.  Storing the results... to Excel..  -sigh-  Most people refer to Excel, but end up needing to use a different function.  In any case, are you writing to an existing Excel Spreadsheet which already has information in it?  If not, you can use the "Write to Spreadsheet File.vi".

  • How to read the data in spectrum analyzer (Anritsu MS2661C) and put it in Excel using Labview

Hi all, I'm new to using the labview, and I have some trouble doing my project using the labview software.
I have been trying to use the spectrum analyzer (Anritsu MS2661C) which connect to computer using the GPIB connection.
I have got the instrument driver which can write and control the instrument using Labview 2010.
and my Question is how do read the data or result from the spectrum analyzer and send it to the microsoft excel?
Do I need to use other software or programming to do this step?
If anyone know how is this done, please let me know.
    Regards,
    Ery

    Hi ery,
In order to send data that you have read in from an instrument to Excel, the most convenient way to do this would be to use our Report Generation Toolkit.  The Report Generation Toolkit is a very useful tool that allows you to interface to Microsoft Office software from LabVIEW, including Word and Excel.  I am not sure if you are familiar with this, but I have attached a link that explains more about the Report Generation Toolkit below.
Another way would be to use the Write To Spreadsheet File VI.  While this will store your data to a spreadsheet data file, it will not allow you to programmatically perform any Excel formatting like the Report Generation Toolkit offers.  I have also attached a link to some information on the Write To Spreadsheet VI below.
Also, be sure to check out the Example Finder in LabVIEW for a number of examples on how to write data to a spreadsheet file.  From LabVIEW, you can go to Help»Find Examples to launch the Example Finder.  From there, you can search for "spreadsheet," which should populate examples for use in different applications.  I hope this helps, ery.  Please let me know if you have any further questions about these!

  • Communications between LabVIEW and spectrum analyzer

hi, im a beginner in LabVIEW and spectrum analyzer, and im now trying to let LabVIEW captures signal coming from spectrum analyzer. i have all the required components needed but i have totally no idea how to get started, is there any exercises or labs available here?

It will depend on your method of communication with the device.  If it is RS232 you can go to the example finder (Help > Find Examples) and search for RS232 or however you plan on communicating with the device.  Or you can browse the catagories for examples on various topics.
Depending on the device the manufacturer may have LabVIEW drivers on their web site.  But anybody will need more information on the analyzer and the signals before you can be helped.

  • IVI Support for Spectrum Analyzer/Signal Gen

Did anyone implemented IVI driver for Spectrum Analyzer or Signal genetrator according to the IVI foundation specifications?
When will NI support these types in the measurement studio?

    Hagay,
We are working to update our IVI architecture to be compliant with the latest IVI Foundation specifications, including support for the Power Meter, Spectrum Analyzer, and RF Signal Generator classes. Furthermore, support will be available for both MeasurementStudio, LabWindows/CVI, and LabVIEW.
While National Instruments will have a select few instrument specific drivers available for the new classes, you should be able to obtain drivers from instrument vendors.

  • Iberr = EABO(6) with spectrum analyzer

    hello every body
I am new user of labview, I sucess to make the connection between a PC and SPECTRUM ANALYZER R3361C but I cannot read or write data from SPECTRUM. In addition, I tried all the value of time out I dont success to read and write.
After l'execution, I have this message
    iberr = EABO
EABO indicates that an I/O operation has been canceled, usually due to a timeout condition after a GPIB read.  Before reading from the instrument, verify that the GPIB command you are sending is understood by your device and instructs it to place data in its output buffer.
    Please Help Me
    best regards.

The first thing to know is whether you are using an NI GPIB board? If you are, I'm assuming that you have already tested it in MAX (Measurement & Automation Explorer). After that, did you right click on the board under devices and interfaces and select 'Scan for Instruments'? Does your instrument appear in the list over on the right side of the screen? If it does, is there an instrument description present or does it say something like 'instrument did not repsond to *IDN? query'? If MAX fails to find the instrument, is there another instrument you can connect to determine whether the cable or GPIB board is faulty? If another instrument works, check the manual for the 3361 and see if there is something that needs to be turned on to enable GPIB communication. Some instruments have a menu item that needs to be enabled first. If all of this works, then you can attempt to communicate to the instrument. I have no experience with the 3361 and cannot find it on Advantest's web site. It is the Avantest spectrum analyzer isn't it? If the instrument did respond to the *IDN? query, and you can't get it to repsond to others, then you have a problem with the actual commands you are sending or with the way the instrument is setup.Message Edited by Dennis Knutson on 10-09-2006 07:29 AM

  • Trying to acquire from Spectrum Analyzer CATV measurments.

I am using an Agilent E4402B Spectrum Analyzer and can't seem to find any code that would help on the path of acquiring data from the Spectrum Analyzer. Need to acquire Carrier level and frequency, Depth of Modulation, and aural deviation. Currently using Techtronix Spectrum Analyzer and CSS 500 software with GPIB interface. Techtronix no longer makes the software and the scope I am using is not supported any longer for calibration or repair.

Just have to go to the Instrument Driver Network and download it. An IVI driver is available here.

  • Spectrum analyzer gui example

I am trying to construct a GUI to control and display an Agilent E4408B spectrum analyzer.
I have created a serial connection to the spectrum analyzer and have managed to control it and query for frequency and power using SCPI commands
sent across the serial link, so I know the serial connection works.
However I am getting nowhere in trying to make a GUI using Labview. I have downloaded the drivers and there seem to be bits of the functionality I need
but I do not know how to "hook up" the serial connection to these bits.
Does anyone have an example of a similar applcation in Labview? It does not need to be an agilent specan, any instrument that has driver supprot and uses serial communication would be a good example.
    Many thanks!

    Hi NIer,
I am new to Labview and trying to build a GUI controlling Agilent E4408B using GPIB-USB-HS. I have downloaded the driver (plug and play) from NI website however the downloaded document makes me confused where to start. Would you mind sending me a proper tutorial document please? Any suggestion will be highly appreciated!
I need this to be done urgently and hope you can help!

You should also get both the programming manuals for the instruments. Remember that Labview drivers is not really drivers. They are more a program for controlling some instrument. The are seldom complete, regarding all instrument functions. Use them as a base for your own application
    Steps:
    1 download the driver
2 Unzip to a separate folder
    3 Read the documentation
    4 Test the "driver"
5 Good Luck, post again if you are stuck

  • Sound Input Read Spectrum Analyzer

I am working on a project with Arduino to do a spectrum analyzer. The LVIFA part of it is working fine.
The part that I am struggling with is the audio input.
I am using the Sound Input Pallet.
    My troubles are two-fold.
    1. A single read takes quite some time and I need to have a pretty quick response. I decreased the samples per read and came up with problem #2.
    2. I can get one read out of the Sound Read In and then the VI locks up. I have my timeout set to 1 Sec and it never times out. I have to restart LabVIEW.
While it would be nice to have this VI working, I'm not even sure that I am using the correct tool. If I am going to be running an audio spectrum analyzer display off of the data input, I need to response to be within a few mS (ie. <200) so that it looks visually correct.
If this library will not achieve this, then I need to look into a different tool.

    Hi,
I have a similar project, actually I am using a Audio frequency range as input to the Arduino and do an FFT to receive the spectrum out of it.
See the YOUTUBE video I did and the code in *.jpg. I took actually the Continous Input example and modified it.
    Hope that helps.
Keep me posted, since we might work on a same project.

  • Spectrum analyzer with sim and DAQ IV File

    Hello..
i have a project that i need to design a Spectrum analyzer with simulation mode and DAQ option. ( so you can generate input signal from LabView and DAQ.
all i look for is a modern Spectrum anlyzer VI file for reference and education purposes
i know there are examples out there in LabView but, i need a modern one with a lot of options and features ( like Impulse respond, marker... filters.....)
there is something i found here on the website, it happen long time ago, and some proffessor from Vietnam created such project. its not with DAQ, but its great for me.
    here is the link:

this kind of Spectrum anlyzer looks great
    most appreciate for any help

    Hi Eldad,
Thanks for posting and welcome to the NI forums!
    The
application you have linked uses LabVIEW to control a Tektronix TDS220
    over RS232 (a.k.a. serial port).  The TDS220 has a 1GHz sample rate
with a 100 MHz bandwidth--the specs on our DAQ devices don't go nearly
this high, our High Speed Digitizers
would be a better option if you need something comparable.  Also, the
programming of the two devices (TDS220 vs. DAQ) is going to be quite
different, so I am not sure how helpful the code from the link would be
for your application.  I don't have access to the code or permission to
post it here, but you could always try contacting the original author
(his contact info is in the link you provided, not sure if it's up to
date or not).  Again, I'm not really sure how helpful the code would be
    for you.
You might want to take a look at the following example to see if it does what you need:
    NI-DAQmx: Benchtop Spectrum Analyzer
    There
are also numerous examples that are installed with the DAQmx Driver to
help you get started with the API.  You can access them from LabVIEW by
    going to:
Help >> Find Examples... >>  Hardware Input and Output >> DAQmx
    There
may not be a ready-made example that will do everything that you
require, but the above should give you a good starting point for
implementing the necessary features yourself.  If you run into any
specific issues while trying to program, please don't hesitate to post
to the forum and we'll be more than happy to help out.

Also, for my USART connection, i am using the MAX232 Driver which is applicable for my application as i am working with +5V. So far, i have been reading and trying out on Labview and the steps i have taken are:
    1) Open a New VI and used the Instrument I/O(Read & Display) template?
    2) How do i configure the Instrument I/O Assistant Express VI to read the info from my device connected to COM1?
    3) I was reading the Labview Manual, 'Getting Started with Labview' and i was following the steps under Page 55, Communicating with an Instrument. Am i on the right track?
    4) How do i check and make sure that the port settings of the I/O Assistant and my PIC Micro Match
Please help me out and guide me through the process. I am student at a polytechnic and i am very new to Labview and the software is used as a development tool for the project. Getting Started with Labview.pdf ‏901 KB

    Hi Ashwin,
It is a good idea to first be able to communicate with the microcontroller using some sort of serial communication software such as "HyperTerminal" or "Procomm", etc. Refer to MicroChip's recommendations on this.
Once that works, then you are ready to use LabView.
Here is a link which covers many aspects of serial communication. Link - click here
You probably received a development kit. They usually have a readily available interface. It's been a long time since I played with the PIC, but I seem to remember that you need to program the serial communication driver (as well as at least a bootloader) to get the serial communication going. The driver contains the necessary protocols so that you PC can have a machine conversation with the target (PIC).
It sounds like a fun & interesting project. Please avoid to have replies to your personal email. By having the answers posted to this thread, you will get much more support and advice.
    Have fun,
