I guess this won't work. GRUB apparently creates a mapping in the BIOS here, but as soon as Linux boots, it doesn't care about what the BIOS says and accesses hardware directly. You should do the following instead:
If you have a USB stick that you can completely erase, use the .img file and copy it to the stick with dd.
If not, you can try to place the files on any filesystem (usb, hard drive, everything) like this:
* Mount the ISO
* Copy the *.sqfs files and the isomounts file to the root directory on any filesystem (I think ntfs will not work, but fat32, ext2, ext3, ext4 should)
* Copy the vmlinuz26 and the initcpio_pata.img files from the /boot directory anywhere (can be the same filesystem as above, but doesn't have to be - we'll assume this is accesible from grub by (hd1,2)/boot below)
Now add the following GRUB entry:
title Arch Live
kernel (hd1,2)/boot/vmlinuz26 lang=en locale=en_US.UTF-8 archisolabel=YOURLABEL ramdisk_size=75%
initrd (hd1,2)/boot/initcpio_pata.img
Above, replace YOURLABEL with the label of the filesystem you copied the isomounts and *.sqfs to. If the filesystem doesn't have a label, give it one.

  • Run XP / Vista from a USB flash memory on my Macbook Air

    Hello!
Does anyone know if it is possible to boot and run XP directly from a USB stick?
I am fairly new to Mac. So far I like it a lot however, due to my job I need to run some things in XP or Vista. Instead of "polluting" my new Macbook Air with a partition with XP I thought it would be neat to run XP from a USB stick. They are cheap and quite large nowadays but I really have no clue if it is doable technically. It might be too slow or there might be other issues that I don't know of.
Can anyone shed some light or point in the right direction.
All help will be highly appreciated.
    A

I would guess that performance wouldn't be so good trying to run XP from an external hard drive, but I haven't tried it nor do I know if it is possible. I'm in the same boat with needing to run some XP programs.
I've been using VMware Fusion and it works well. However, the MBA runs hot and battery life suffers when just running VMware without much going on in the XP machine. You can probably put the XP VM on a usb key and have VMware run it from there. As for the software running in a VM rather than native, the programs run and the speed is tolerable but I don't mistake it for my ThinkPad. Depending on how much resources your software needs, the MBA may not be a good fit.

  • Run Time from a USB stick

    Hello,
I'm working on a simple VI using the SMTP send file function, which will be run from a USB stick. The executable works well save for that it needs to run from the stick on computers without Run Time installed. I have Run Time 8.5 installed on the stick, in the X:\Program Files\National Instruments\ folder, but the application can't find the RTE to execute. It needs to find it automatically, since several people (all untrained in LabView) will be inserting the stick into various remote Windows computers in order to send the emails and attachments. Another potential problem is the varying drive letter assignment given to the USB stick, but that doesn't seem to be the current problem. Any suggestions?
    Setup:
    WinXP
    LV 8.5
    Thanks,
    Mark

In some cases it possible, if you not using packages which should be installed, like IMAQ, VISA, etc...
But do not install RunTime on the memory stick (because some paths will be stored in the registry - you may get troubles with your PC when stick will be removed).
Try to do following (without guarantees, but may work):
    1. Copy <Program Files>\National Instruments\Shared\LabVIEW Run-Time\x.x directory to your USB stick (x.x - LabVIEW version which was used for your project)
    2. Place your builded application into this directory on USB stick (executable should be located at the same place where lvrt.dll located)
    3. Try to start it on the PC without RunTime.
    hopefully it helps,
    Andrey.

  • Running Solaris 11 from a USB drive with persistent changes - possible?

I am wanting to use Solaris 11 as the basis of a NAS for home use; the hardware is a HP N40L Microserver populated with 5 HDDs. As all of these HDDs will be used for data storage in a zpool configuration, I have no more physical space (without further hacks) inside the case for an additional OS drive. Therefore, I am wondering if it is possible to run Solaris 11 from a fast USB flash drive. I know there is a live USB image, but AFAIK, any configuration changes made when running this will not remain after a reboot - is this correct? And if so, is there any way to make the changes persistent?
The only discussion I could find on this subject is this thread from a couple of years ago: https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2235078 - but I don't think the guy got a definitive answer.

Running the important rpool on USB stick is not my favorite configuration. I would recommend reducing your data pool down to 4 devices and putting your root pool on the 5th disk. People ask about this in the datacenter and I wrote a best practice for it, which is not to use a USB stick for rpool, here:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26502_01/html/E29007/zfspools-4.html#gentextid-12349
Your data is important, but the root pool is very important for keeping your data available. In the datacenter, we also worried that rack vibration might wiggle the stick right out of the drive. For home use, I've heard about pets jumping on boxes and disconnecting disk cables. Sounds paranoid, but I've seen it/heard it all.
There is no reason why you can't put rpool on a USB stick, some operations might not be easy (see Dave's post), but I don't think its the best choice for optimal data availability.
    Thanks, Cindy

  • Playing content from a USB stick on an Edge 340

Is it possible to have an Edge 300 or 340 play content from a USB stick?  This works on DMP 4310s but wondering if this is possible with an Edge device?  Have a customer that uses digital signs but can't always have network connectivity so places video content on a USB stick to play through the DMP without network connectivity.
    Thanks
    John

    Hi,
Note: The 4310 itself has had a significant API overhaul in the latest firmware release.
Now, the Cisco Edge has its own set of APIs, see FAQ at http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/video/edge-340-digital-media-player/q-and-a-c67-729672.html
Some of the native API is documented here but its mostly system management commands:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/cisco_edge_340/software/release/1_0/configuration/guide/340cg_en.pdf
The 340 is pretty much a regular Fedora 16 Linux system, it runs binaries and RPMs from that release (it can be tricky because the installed ones have edge340 in the package name, this wreaks havoc on dependencies so I'm trying to stick with static vs linked binaries and not mess with the stock RPM database) so you can modify it to do anything Linux can do.
One example that would not break your setup or modify it: You can SCP content to the local flash storage (or a USB stick if you wish) and remotely issue a VLC command line via ssh to play that local media in full screen mode. We have been experimenting with playing multicast video URLs in this manner by providing a multicast address and port on the command line.
Since as I mentioned, it's just a Linux box, I have a prototype I've updated to a later version of VLC than what was included so it's hard for me to say "oh, this works great" because mine isn't stock anymore. I've also hacked it to do Airplay (apple) mirroring from my iPhone or Macbook Pro for example.
(Just don't nuke the restore partition on the flash media. I have had to roll it back to stock once or twice.)
Our BU (we're an end user of the 340) has done various things on the 340 like emulating the 4310's api with a java daemon that responds to similar commands. I don't know if this is fully complete or an approach we're moving forward with. I think we only need to emulate a small portion of the legacy 4310 commands. But it's another example of the versatility of the 340, whereas on the 4310 with its sigmatel processor, I had a lot of trouble compiling useful binaries that would execute on it for various troubleshooting and QA activity.
I only bring some of these points up because the 340 may be an interesting and useful endpoint for other vendors who may wish to evaluate and use our product in other ways than just the Appspace route.

I copied mp3 files from a usb stick and they appear in finder in my itunes media/music folder and on my iphone and ipad with itunes match but not in the itunes library?

Not working.  And it didn't used to be a problem.  iTunes can find the songs with Search Library, but doesn't show in any index (by song, artist or album).  Finding with Search Library offers to play or add to Up Next, but neither actually does anything.  Using File-Add to Library does nothing as well.  The only way I can get the new files to play is to find in Finder and Open with iTunes.
I suspect Apple is trying to drive me to buy from iTunes store.  Not gonna happen.  If they don't fix this, I'll find another player.
This worked fine before OSX 10.8.

    Hello Ramanan,
Report Builder : connect JDBC Query in Report Builder is to through Connection Dialog in JDBC Query Editor. User can use a Sign on parameter (can use, default : P_JDBCPDS or can create new) to connect to JDBC Data Source. Connection once made will be mentioned and will be reused through out Reports Builder.
JDBC PDS allows user to connect one or more same or different kind of databases.
While running report through runtime or Server, user can pass the sign on parameter(connection string) value, like any other user parameter.
Syntax for connection string : <username>/<password>@databaseURL . The syntax of database part of connection string depend on the type of JDBC Driver used to connect to Data Source while designing the JDBC Query. databaseURL refer to the location of the database and its format depend on the JDBCPDS river selected in design time while creating the JDBC Query.
    rwrun eg :
    rwrun report=jdbc_odbc.rdf destype=file desname=output.html desformat=html P_JDBCPDS=scott/tiger@database
    Server eg :

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
Just to re-iterate...for some reason my Macbook doesn't seem to be providing enough power to the EHD through the USB ports.
    So in recap.
    1.  Is there anyway to get more power to my USB port to power the EHD
    2. If not, how do I transfer my contents of my EHD to my Macbook without wiping the EHD first

  • Installing Snow Leopard Server From a USB Sticki

In my job, I install Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server three or four times a day.
With Snow Leopard, I've found it easiest to install from a USB stick. So, I did a restore from a DVD to a USB in Disk Utility and it's worked great.
With Snow Leopard Server, it is not so simple. When trying to install from a USB stick, I get "Mac OS X 10.6 Server Cannot Be Installed To This Machine." Though strangely, installing from the DVD is no problem.
I've tried to restore straight from the DVD to the USB. I've also tried to install from the DVD to a disk image to the USB. Both times, the USB will mount fine, but I get that error message.
Am I missing a trick here?

Oddly enough it is working for me. I had some issues initially so I went out and bought ONE 16GB thumb-drive (major vendor) and partitioned into two partitions.
I restored one of the partitions with 10.6 and restored the other with 10.6 server. Works flawlessly for me though I do like netinstall. It is a bit slower than the FW800 drive though I do not have to carry around a power brick.
    I hope this helps!
