RunInstaller hangs on Solaris 8 and 8.1.7 install

Hello,
We have a new 220R Solaris 8 ( Generic_108528-13 ) box
with the Oracle 8.1.7, the java installer comes up but
during the install process it hangs. Usually at the eom.conf
section ( about 75% complete). This is a Out of the Box
configuration and I have installed successfully on other
Solaris 8 and Oracle 8i builds, just not this one.
Here's a partial truss that the jre cycles through every
second or so:

Thanks

fixed it,
when I took out all PATH's ( setenv PATH .... ) it worked.
Here is what I had had for a PATH list:
setenv PATH /bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/dt/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/ucb
setenv PATH ${PATH}:${ORACLE_HOME}/bin
setenv PATH ${PATH}:.
I'm guessing that the install was accessing a make from the wrong
location. that's only a guess.... anyways I commented the all
PATH variables out and the runInstaller worked/completed it task.

• WLS6.1 hanging on Solaris- and SIGQUIT doesn't work

Hi,
We are experiencing a problem that looks like a deadlock when our server is under load (using WLS6.1SP2, Solaris 8 and the 1.3.1 JVM supplied with WLS). After processing many requests, the server hangs and CPU usage drops to 0%. Unfortunately the standard means of getting a thread dump (sending a SIGQUIT with kill -3 or Ctrl-\) does nothing. The problem also occurs if WebLogic is running under debug (using
-Xdebug -Xnoagent -Djava.compiler=none -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=5555) but alas the debugger hangs when trying to pause the server after this deadlock). It appears as though the server is not accepting any requests (including administrative requests from the console) but this doesn't seem to be due to thread starvation as CPU usage is 0%.
The only output we can get is from truss, which seems to indicate no activity at all until the SIGQUIT is received. It seems to register the SIGQUIT but it looks as though it is not being processed.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Kevin.

We found a solution to this problem, relating to the threading model that the JVM
uses.
Have a look at http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/threads/threads.html for more
details.
The default threading model on Solaris 8 is many-to-many (threads to LWPs) with
thread-based synchronisation. After playing with various threading models, we
found that the best was one-to-one with the alternate thread library. This is
the default provided by Solaris 9, but you can also tell Java to use this with
older versions of Solaris by putting the following line in your start command
prior to executing WebLogic:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/lwp:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
Apologies to anyone who was looking for an answer to this beforehand: I should
have replied to this newsgroup back in September!

If you are not able to capture a JVM thread dump, then the next best
thing would be to capture several "/usr/proc/bin/pstack pid" C-level
thread dumps. This information may enable BEA Support to help suggest
potential work arounds. Depending upon the data in the pstack output,

• System_Exec and Open System Command Pipe hangs in Solaris

I'm using LV 7.1.1 on Solaris and I'm having major problems with the System Exec function in combination with Open System Command Pipe.
1. The program has to run different stuff in parallel but the System Exec won't run in parallel with Open System Command Pipe. It immediately hangs and neither function ever returns. LabVIEW must be killed.
2. After executing Open System Command Pipe, stopping the program and then executing a System Exec, that too hangs. The external script called by Open System Command Pipe is no longer running but obviously LV leaves something behind anyway. Close Pipe doesn't seem to clean up everything. Again, LabVIEW must be killed.
3. Also, regardless of any System Exec call, the first time Open System Command Pipe and Read Pipe is executed it takes a very long time to get the result. After stopping the program and restarting it, it's much faster.
Has anyone else experienced these problems?

I'm having the same difficulties... tried many things, with no luck...

• RunInstaller hang without apparently errors

The runInstaller hang without apparently error (nothing in the installActions.log, .err and .out)
We originally install 8.1.7.0 64bits on a Sparc 5.8 64 bits without problem, after this, we apply patch 8.1.7.4.1.
Now are necessary installing interMedia software from CD 8.1.7.0 but the runInstaller from CD or in the Sparc hang without errors.
Please, any help will be appreciated!
Any way to trace runInstaller or to find the cause of the hang...
Thanks,
Diego L.
[email protected]

We found a workaround, but not satisfy.
We make a "truss -f -o /tmp/intaller.truss -p <pid>" for the runInstaller process and when it hang, we abort the truss "Ctrl+C" and run it again.
This method "pick up" the runInstaller and the installation continue for some minutes, when the runInstaller hang again we repeat the process (abort the truss and run it again) until the end of installation. :(
We see the truss output and appreciate the same patron when the runInstaller hang... always after a SIGNAL 14 (timeout).
Thanks!
Any help will be apreciated.

Hi,
The following program is giving results diferently
when I am executing using g++ compiler in Solaris
and Linux.
Why it is so.
here is the code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <malloc.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
int main( void )
size_t size;
char *buf;
if ( ( buf = (char *)malloc(10 *sizeof(char))) == NULL)
exit (1);
size = sizeof( buf );The size you get here is the size of buf, which is the size of a pointer, not the size of what buf points to. sizeof(*buf) would give you size of a char, the type (not the object) that buf points to.
There is no portable way to find out the number of bytes allocated on the heap if you are give only a pointer to the memory. You have to remember the size some other way..
strcpy(buf, "HelloWorld");A literal string consists of the characters in the string plus a terminating null, all of which are copied by strcpy. You allocated 10 chars for buf, but are writing 11 chars into it. At this point, the program has undefined behavior. Literally anything at all could happen, because you can't predict the effect of writing outside the bounds of allocated memory.
printf("\n Address is : %u String is : %s size :
e : %d ", buf, buf,size);
if (( buf = (char *) realloc(buf, sizeof(20))) == NULL)The "sizeof" operator in this case is returning the size of the type of a literal 20, which is an int. If you want to allocate 20 bytes, you write 20, not sizeof(20).
exit ( 1);
*(buf+10) = 'A'; *(buf+11) = 'B'; *(buf+12) == '\0';SInce you can't count on buf having more than 4 bytes at this time, you are writing into unallocated memory, with undefined results.
printf("\n Address is : %u String is : %s\n", buf, buf);
free( buf);
exit( 0 );
Instead of asking why you get different results on different platforms, you should be asking why the program doesn't crash on all platforms. :-)
You can avoid these problems with keeping track of allocating memory by using the C++ standard library instead of trying to manage low-level details yourself as in C code.
The standard string class, for example, extends itself as needed, and ensures that heap memory is freed when the string object is deleted or goes out of scope. You don't need pointers, malloc, free, or sizeof to use C++ strings.

• Installing 11i on Solaris and migrating 8.0.5 to new 8.1.6 database

I've installed 11i (several times) on a new Sun solaris server. I also selected it to install a fresh database. On another server we have 11.0 and 8.0.5 database. We are using a new server to install 11i and we want to move our database over. I managed to transfer all database files over to the new server and upgrade to 8.1.6 (succeeded)
How do I proceed now to get the 11i applications to use the database i've transferred over. Is this possible??? Can't find any clear documentation on how to merge this database into the applications 11i.
Thanks

Gina, I am attempting something similar... but it involves moving an exisiting installation from HP-UX to Solaris, so I cannot move the datafiles... If I run into a method that helps both of us, I will let you know... as of now, I am installing fresh on Solaris and going to try to run upgrade scripts on existing 10.7 and exp/imp into the new instance on 11i (Solaris).
Let me know of anything you find out that could help me, and I will do the same...

As a debugging step, try printing to the Adobe PDF printer. If that fails, repeat with print-to-file selected. Assuming the print succeeds, open the file in Distiller to complete the creation of the PDF. If you get the PDF, then check to see if AcroTray is properly working as a background task.

• 10g BPEL process upgrade to 11g hangs in Jdeveloper and Ant script

I have successfully upgraded several 10g (10.1.3.4) BPEL processes and ESB services using Jdeveloper 11g (11.1.1.6.0) migration wizard and deployed them to an 11g environment. Both 10g and 11g environments are up and running.
However, my 11g jdeveloper hangs when migrating the next BPEL process. It hangs at the message box with the title: "Migration Status". I tried the Ant script and it hangs too. It hangs after printing out:
"CompositeRefs
[upgrade] WARNING: UPGBPEL-02009: No Binding setup for : "soapCheckPrivileges"
. This will cause compilation of the upgraded project to fail. Check SOA Upgrade
documentation on manual steps necessary to bind this composite reference. If ne
cessary, upgrade and deploy any dependencies. If planning to retain 1013x nodes
in this projects dependency tree, check earlier part of this log for 1013x WSDL
URLs that can be used."
I guess it makes sense since Jdeveloper and Ant script use the same code base for migration.
One other observation is that if I kill the hanging jdeveloper process and reopen it and go through the migration wizard again, it will be successful without hanging. However, when I fix all the wsdl reference and do a build and deploy to sar. The resulting sar is defective and cannot be deployed to Weblogic even if both build and deploy to sar report success. The defective sar contains only scac.log and scac-log.xml, not even composite.xml.
One difference between this BPEL process and others I have successfully upgraded is that it depends on an ESB service (this esb service has been upgraded and deployed to 11g).
Any ideas?
Thanks,

I will answer my question. I killed the migrating Java process and the migrating wizard will report failure of migrating the .jpr file. Actually, the only thing missing in the migrated .jpr file is deployment profile which I can generate from deployment menu. And I can deploy the migrated process. This works as a workaround.

ORACLE SERVER
IBM OS ISSUE: SYSTEM HANG WITH JFS2 AND HEAVY LOAD
==================================================
PURPOSE
Problem Description
Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 9.2.0.5.0
Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 8.1.7.4.0
AIX5L Based Systems (64-bit) or (32-bit)
- arch-process doesn't release redolog files
- arch-process doesn't die after database shutdown
- arch-process can't be killed
(sleeping...)28590: kwaitpid(0x2FF22470, -1, 4, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
IBM OS issue: SYSTEM HANG WITH JFS2 AND HEAVY LOAD.
Workaround
none
Solution Description
OS AIX5L ML4.0(5.2.0.40)의 bos.up / bos.mp / bos.mp64 fileset level을
JFS2 file system에 Heavy I/O activity가 발생하면 database process에
Fix :
Need to install the IBM APAR-FIX IY59082, this APAR is included on
bos.64bit 5.2.0.42.

b,
The install was from my original Dell XP Pro-SP1 'Reinstallation' CD along with the complete MS XP-SP2 download that I burned to another CD. I also had all the latest Dell drivers from their website burned to a CD. Install went as follows:
- Format HD
- Install XP Pro SP1
- Install SP2
- Install Dell Drivers
- Obtain any MS patches from their site
- Install Office
- Update Office from the MS website
- Install iTunes
- Tweak MS settings
- Install many software programs
- Make an interim Image of system and store to ExHD
- Install other software programs (mostly security programs)
- Make another 'complete' Image to ExHD
- Restore backup data and music
After additional testing last night, I determined that it is not iTunes at all (or to blame). I get intermittent hangs/freezes/pauses in other media players (WMP, etc.).
Seems that something is causing the 'System' process to periodically jump up in CPU %age (though not more than 30-50%). Even this relatively small amount is enough to pause the playback of music or video, hang the mouse movement for a brief moment, or delay a menu opening. All very subtle - you have to be looking for it to notice (except with real-time audio-video, which is quite noticeable whenever this happens).
I had this problem a year ago, which is why I reimaged then and stayed with SP1 on the advice of Dell and Webroot. I'm stumped as to where to look for the culprit. Every time I go back to the original HD with SP1, everything runs smoothly. Some sort of system call is generating this complete pause....
I'll be limited in my Internet ability for the next several days, so I may be out of touch until Friday. I'll keep testing and playing with the limited equipment I take along....
Any thought you or others want to toss out, I'll attempt when possible.
Thanks!
