Running a VM from an exFAT drive

I use a windows 7-x64 box at work, on which i hv my linux VM running on VMware player 3. How can I use the same VM on a mac. Right now I'm running it on an NTFS external HDD which is perfect for windows. However, I need to use it on my mac (Snow Leopard) through VMware Fusion. The VM is almost 60Gig ruling out FAT32 by a long mile. I've heard a lot about exFAT. Any ideas if VMware fusion will run a VM from an exFAT drive?

Fusion by itself doesn't deal with exFAT.  It's up to the host OS (a.k.a.: OSX) to mount the exFAT partition, then Fusion will use that drive just like it would any other drive that your VM files are stored on.
Me personally, I use Tuxera NTFS to mount NTFS partitions.  You can get the free 3G-NTFS to do the same.  I was getting suspicious errors when running large monolithic VMDK files (i.e.: 60GB VMDK) which caused me to switch from 3G-NTFS to Tuxera.  But Tuxera is not free so you may want to try 3G-NTFS first.
However I will explain an alternate method for you: 2GB split VMDKs.
VMware Player, Workstation and Fusion all support VMDK files split into multiple 2GB chunks.  Normally you have to specify this when you create the virtual disk, but it can be converted later.  (Try creating a new test VM in Fusion or Player and messing with the advanced settings.)  Having the VMDK in 2GB chunk will allow you to use a FAT32 partitioned disk, which can then be used with Windows or OSX without any additional software.  Additionally, copying 2GB chunks is more reliable than a single 60GB file.  And if you ever need to recover data from a corrupt VMDK, it's easier working with 2GB files.  (Many tools have trouble opening very large files.)
The only time most people will "need" to use a VMDK (a.k.a.: not split) is if they need the virtual machine to be compatible with a VMware ESX based host.  However, you can use tools such as VMware Converter to copy virtual machines to and from ESX hosts and in the same process, convert the VMDKs to split files.  The source and destination virtual machines can be both Player so you'd use Converter just to "convert" to 2GB split VMDKs.  The biggest requirement for you is that you need enough disk space.  (Converter "copies" the data, so you end up with a clone of the original virtual machine.  Thus you need twice the space.)  After you convert and confirm the converted virtual machine works, then you can delete the original, if desired.  (This copy method is a good thing because if something goes wrong during the conversion, you simply delete the bad copy and start over.  If it didn't copy and something messed up, you'd possibly destroy your original.)
Me personally, I "need" to have my VMDKs monolithic because they're mostly running on ESX hosts.  I occasionally copy out some of the virtual machines for testing so being able to run them without going through Converter is highly desirable in my situation.  I still use Converter for various instances when I create the virtual machine in Fusion first, since ESX doesn't support growable disks, which are useful on my space limited Mac.  But if you never use ESX, then 2GB split VMDKs on a FAT32 drive makes the most sense for compatibility between a Player/Windows host and a Fusion/Mac host.

  • How to run data merge from external hard drive?

I attempting to merge a large document (~4,000 records) in CS3. The document that I'm merging the data into is also large (an 8 page newsletter). I have exported the pages of the document as a PDF and the imported them again (therefore minimizing the data/links/etc.) but the amount of memory it was consuming was still crashing the program when I ran it on my computer. I bought a TB external hard drive and would like to run the merge from there so that it is using that memory/RAM instead of my computer's. I moved the indesign file, all the pdf links, and the .csv file that is the data source to the external hard drive. That didn't solve the problem. Is the merge now running from the external hard drive and still not working or is there something further I need to be doing to get InDesign using the external hard drive memory instead of my computer's memory? Any advice would be wonderful, thanks!

  • Running Solaris 11 from a USB drive with persistent changes - possible?

I am wanting to use Solaris 11 as the basis of a NAS for home use; the hardware is a HP N40L Microserver populated with 5 HDDs. As all of these HDDs will be used for data storage in a zpool configuration, I have no more physical space (without further hacks) inside the case for an additional OS drive. Therefore, I am wondering if it is possible to run Solaris 11 from a fast USB flash drive. I know there is a live USB image, but AFAIK, any configuration changes made when running this will not remain after a reboot - is this correct? And if so, is there any way to make the changes persistent?
The only discussion I could find on this subject is this thread from a couple of years ago: https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2235078 - but I don't think the guy got a definitive answer.

Running the important rpool on USB stick is not my favorite configuration. I would recommend reducing your data pool down to 4 devices and putting your root pool on the 5th disk. People ask about this in the datacenter and I wrote a best practice for it, which is not to use a USB stick for rpool, here:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26502_01/html/E29007/zfspools-4.html#gentextid-12349
Your data is important, but the root pool is very important for keeping your data available. In the datacenter, we also worried that rack vibration might wiggle the stick right out of the drive. For home use, I've heard about pets jumping on boxes and disconnecting disk cables. Sounds paranoid, but I've seen it/heard it all.
There is no reason why you can't put rpool on a USB stick, some operations might not be easy (see Dave's post), but I don't think its the best choice for optimal data availability.
    Thanks, Cindy

  • Running Final Cut7 from external hard drive with 15" Retina having FCX on it's drive...

    Hi All,
I ended up (unexpectedly) having to lay my 15" standard MBP to rest and stepping up to 15" Retina. Problem; coming from Final Cut 7 with many projects and external hard drives for clients with FC7-handled media that still needs to live on for future projects and updates to existing timelines/sequences.   I need to install Final Cut X on the Retina but still need to recruit media from these external drives (I have each of my clients buy and external hard drive for their media to "live" on).
My idea is to install FC 7 on an external hard drive and run it from there.  The main goal is for the next year or so, to be able to bridge the world between former clients who have years worth of clips and FC sequences/timelines they just update each year, to new clients today.
Thoughts? I really don't want to mess this up.....yikes!
    Thanks!
    ClemKins

The applications are just going to run faster on your 256GB internal 'drive' than if installed on an external - if, indeed, they COULD be installed on an external (there are a lot of files inserted into you Libraries that the applications need to run).
If you don't have it in your budget to buy some Thunderbolt drives for swap space, I'm assuming that you can allocate swap space on an external (I know that I do with Photoshop)? That would cut down on swap space used on your internal.
256GB should be more than enough - even though I have a 512GB SSD I really am only (now, anyway) using about 140GB on it and I'm running the entire Adobe CS6 suite and quite a number of other drive-heavy apps. So 256GB should be a worry.
As I said, I have all of my apps installed on my internal drive and use two Thunderbolt external drives as 'working' drives - you should be able to do the same with whatever connections you have to your external drives (just will be a little slower than Thunderbolt). Keep your apps on your internal - 256GB is really enough.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Run Snow Leopard from an externalUSb Drive/Stick

    Hello,
I have a 13" Macbook with Snow Leopard installed on it that is failing to boot (grey screen with spinning wheel). I have tried repairing the HD with the SL DVD and it says that I should back up all my files and format/reinstall SL.
I have read that you can boot from an external USB drive/Stick and have followed the instructions so that I can at least recover my files and then reformat the drive and restore my files to the newly formatted HD.
I have been able to install SL on an external USB Drive (and to a stick) but when rebooting it freezes during the "Create Account" screen and I am not able to boot from that External Drive.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thank you for your quick response to my post.
I have tried booting the machine off the HD but get the grey screen with the Apple logo, a spinning icon and a status bar underneath that just does not move. I have left in this state overnight and nothing happens, I cant boot from the internal HD.
I have booted the machine holding alt and holding C. When holding alt it list the HD and the external USB. When I boot from the external USB drive it goes thru the start up process of setting up the OS. It asks me for my mobile me info, if I want to set up a wireless connection, and when I get to the create account screen I enter all the information and click enter it hangs for a while and then I get the spinning color icon and it does not move from there.
So to summarize, I am stuck trying to boot from an external drive to salvage my files and reboot and have tried with 2 external USB drives (a 2 TB WD self powered unit and a portable WD 120GB computer powered unit) and a 16 GB DatTraveller USB stick. I don't know if the units are the problem. I have just purchased the 2TB unit a couple of days ago.
I need to clarify that this is a Mackbook 13" not a Macbook Pro so it does not have a FireWire connection and I am desperate to salvage my files.

I am OK to ignore the error. But better option will be SQL Developer take care of this situation.
My intention is to keep SQL Developer on a readonly share folder and send the path to end users.
Ideally I wish I could use UNC path so that I dont have to worry about the drive mapping.

  • How do i run a file from my flash drive on my macbook air?

I haven't got a clue what I'm doing.  I have saved content from a papercrafting software CD to my flash drive and am trying to open/run it on my new Macbook Air.  When I try to run it I get a promp saying it can't open the application because Microsoft Wondows applications are not supported on OS X.  It's a .exe file ... Do I need to buy an app to run it??

You need to use CrossOver Mac, WineSkin, or Windows. CrossOver Mac has a free trial.

  • Running operating system from external hard drive

I know that is possible, and I have done it before when I have needed to run Disk Utility or to salvage files from an an mountable hard drive, though here is my question. My iMac just ran out of applecare, and I dont know if my boss wants to put the money into repair it yet. I am wondering the draw backs or real issues with running a mac natively off a external fw800 drive. I know its unorthodox, but if the repair of this iMac is allot, which I have a feeling it will be, this might be a a possible option, for a back up computer.

It will be a bit slower but it should work just like booting from the internal disk.

What's the best way to run logic from external hard drive

    Hi

Logic is designed to run from your Applications folder. I suspect if Logic was moved to an external drive, it might not be able to locate its assets, like loops and libraries.
As long the necessary files are in the correct places on the boot disc, you can run the Logic application itself fom wherever you like. It would not be recommended however, and there would be very little benefit (if any) in doing so.

  • Running a DVD TS folders from the Hard Drive

Anybody now whether automator will run a DVD from the hard drive (TS folders). It runs fine from the DVD disk, but all the DVD functions in automator appear to only relate to an inserted disk.
    Thanks.
    Ti 677Mhz

so it works perfectly from the desktop - but fails to
    eject if a startup item?
Yep, its like the DVD player resets itself.
When you say startup - you mean it's in the startup
    folder ?
if so, try it as a login item instead, perhaps?
Yes its in as a login item, is there a start up folder under OSX?
Failing that, I don't know. But I would try a
separate item run after the first that does nothing
except eject the dvd. ie not just another eject
action from automator in the same script but a new
    login/startup item.
So what you are suggesting is create a 2nd script that just does an eject
and include that as a 2nd start up item, so it runs that after the primary script.
    Hmm worth a try.
Thanks again Andy, if you are ever in OZ give me a call I will buy you a beer.

  • Can I boot from an external drive

Can I run snow leopard from an external drive? If so, would my user directory need to be moved to it?
If not, would it create a new one on the external drive?

I don't want to use the same OS. I need to go back to Tiger for a specific app.
So can it be FireWire or USB?
I assume a new user directory would be created. Should it have a different user name?
Could I see the older one and use files from it? If so, could I also use apps on it or would I have to install them again on the external drive?
Or would that confuse the Mac?
Would the original drive appear like another accessible drive on the desktop or would it appear as a drive I would have no access to?
I am on a network where I can see other macs and use files from them? Would this behave like that? I have access to my files as the same user on other macs, but no access to other users files.

  • Can MBP (with fw800) boot from external FW drive?

Does MBP allow you to boot from an external fw800 drive like the Powerbook did?
I am still using PB, and I used the CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner/SuperDuper etc) to clone my OS to an external fw800 drive. Matter of fact, as I am typing now I am running the OS from the fw800 drive. I need this because if my laptop's OS encounters problem I can boot up the comp.
Does the C2D processor work with CCC? I also notice apart from the PowerPC is that the Intel lets you boot into either OSX/XP or Vista via Bootcamp.
So, if it's possible to boot from an external drive, how does it work out? Because on the PowerBook, you hold option key to select either your main drive or external drive to boot to. But on the Intel, if you have bootcamp installed with OSX/Vista, would it show up 4 directories like this to let you boot to either one of these?
OSX (MBP HD) / Vista (MBP HD) / OSX (ext HD) / Vista (ext HD)
    Thanks

Apple very plainly states that an Intel Mac can't boot a disk formatted on a PowerPC Mac, and vice versa. Each uses a different native partition table. Yet, each can read data stored on the other.
If you initialize the FireWire disk on an Intel Mac and use GPT as the partition type, Intel Macs can boot from it.
If you initialize the drive on a PowerPC machine, or you elect to use APM (Apple Partition Map) on an Intel Mac, then the drive will boot a PowerPC machine.
