Safari https problem

Please help! Safari will not load certain https sites. it just stopped working about a week ago, these sites have never been an issue in the past (work email and bank account). the computer is connected via ethernet cable to cable modem. If I use a wireless network at the neighbors house the sites load fine. If I use the neighbors ethernet the sites load fine. However, when we hook my wifes PC to the same ethernet cable at home (the one that doesn't work for the desired sites on the mac) the load fine. Technicians from the cable company ensure that the modem etc is fine. I even re-installed OS X 10.6.6. Why won't these sites work at home when they work in other locations, and why do they work for my wife's computer? Very frustrating, seems to be a communication problem with the modem?

Hello Y:
After rereading your post, it looks like a networking problem (although why your wife's system works and yours does not on the same network is a puzzle). Is her OS X configuration the same as yours?
You might try posting in the networking forum to see if someone there can see something:

I never say never, but changing Safari to open in the 32 bit mode would not seem address your issue (I access many secure sites and do not have that configuration).

  • Safari https problems

I have the latest safari version 5.0.5 and everytime i sign into a banking website or https site it logs me out immediately, how can i fix this issue as i also use the current version of firefox and i dont have this same problem.. kind regards Mark

Sometimes cookies can be the culprit. From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab.
    Click: Show Cookies.
Delete all the bank related cookies.
Quit then relaunch Safari to see if that makes a difference.

  • Safari & JavaScript Problems

On some websites, I cannot use scripted buttons etc. This is true in all browsers (Safari, Firefox, IE, etc.). I have no problems with my Windows machine. Is there a setting I can change or an add-in that might let me use these sites? I'm not getting any errors in Java, so I'm assuming it's a compatability issue between OSX and the Java being used. Any help would be appreciated because I now have to use my PC to access certain sites (and I have to use them for work).

This is from my similar Safari problems a few months back. It may apply to your Java problems.
I confirmed that it's my Tiger Safari failure to handle Java Applets that is giving me troubles. Java scripts are OK.
Relief, my Safari Java problem is solved. I got the clue to the cause in an Apple discussion, a chap in Germany using Panther had the identical problem.
The problem was caused by older Internet Plugins contained in my UserID>Library>Internet Plugins.
These plugins take priority over the Internet Plugins contained in HD>Library>Internet Plugins.
So removing the duplicate older Internet Plugins from UserID>Library>Internet Plugins corrected the Java applet problem. I had more duplicate Plugins there than the Java ones.
This happened because when doing a clean install I selected to copy over my UserID from the previous Jaguar system, a logical thing to do to carry my files and settings forward.
But bringing forward the Internet Plugin Folder is obviously a big problem for those bringing forward their UserID when installing MacOS X.
Here is a very good site to test your browsers handling of Java Scripts and Applets.

  • Return of the Mosaic of death? Safari/Flash problem? Help please

I'm having issues with my fairly new Macbook Pro 15-inch. The problem has only come up with Safari (5.0.1) running so far; never a problem with Firefox (though it could just be that I use Safari more by far).
Here's what it did to an NFL.com gamecast page.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/52459320@N08/4984712908/
It kind of reminds me of the Mosaic of Death on my old iBook.
And sometimes the issue remains as a "ghost"once I close Safari.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/52459320@N08/4984114073/in/photostream/
Refreshing the page does no good. Closing it leaves the "ghost." I've also notice I get the "you have to restart your Mac" message about once a week.
A weird thing: The mosaic flickers a lot. I tried recording it with a Quick TIme screen recording. But every time I start recording the problem stops! And it returns once I stop recording.
Thoughts? Questions? I'm curious what the problem could be.
FWIW, I first noticed a weird flicker like this when I would switch from a VPN/screen sharing to Safari.
    Thanks for your time.

Just to follow up, in case others have this issue:
Genius Bar guy suggested I try turning off "Automatic Graphics Switching" (System Prefs>Energy Saver). Hadn't thought of that; Googled it when I got home and, sure enough, there's another thread indicating tis might be the problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2566276&messageID=12350542#123 50542
We'll see how it goes, but I'm thinknig this is on track.

  • Https problems in IE, Chrome, Skype, but not Firefox

I have a user whose account on a win2003 domain was deleted by accident (I have no idea how). I recreated the account and recovered the user profile from a local machine. The local machines all run Win7.
Everything seems to work fine again now except that https calls through Internet Explorer and Chrome fail with error messages that seem to indicate the site is simply not available rather than a certificate error or the like. Firefox works fine to access
the same sites. I believe Firefox only works because it doesn`t use the built in security.
Other accounts on the same machine can make https calls without trouble. My assumption is that there is an issue in the user's profile, but moving the Chrome and IE directories from the AppData directory in the user's profile accomplished no change in behaviour.
I found KB 813444 and attempted to follow the instructions there to some extent (they seem aimed at XP and Vista), but couldn't re-register the dlls. None of the other changes made any difference. Likely not the problem anyway as the problem does not occur
for any other account that logs into the machine.
There really seems to be something wrong in the user profile. Permissions too loose on a directory somewhere? But where?
The system is a brand new HP tower with Windows 7 on it. Fresh install about a month ago and kept up to date. All other profiles on the machine work fine. Using the same profile on another machine has the same problem of being unable to connect to https
sites. The error received is not a certificate error, but indicates that the site can't be found, which suggests to me some fundamental failure in the security setup of the user profile. However, I've been unable to find where that information might be stored.
Clearing the SSL state from within Internet options has had no effect on this issue, nor has compatibility mode or any of the things that are possible on Windows 7 from kb813444.
    Any thoughts?
    Keith

    Hello Keith,
If my understanding is right, you only have one account have this https problem.
Will this issue occurs when you create an login as a new account?
If this issue only occur in the single account, we could refer to the following article to fix the profile.

  • Safari/DSL Problem

    Safari/DSL Problem
I’m having a problem with my home DSL network when I hookup a 5.8 GHz digital cordless phone/answering system. Safari will not pull up my home page when I plug in the answering system my SBC DSL network stops functioning. My Mac network consists of an E-Mac running OS 10.3.9 hard wired thru Ethernet cable to an Asante FR1004 Internet router. Also connected to the Asante Router is the Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. The Asante Router is hooked up to the SBC to Speedstream 5100 Ethernet ADSL Modem, which is hard wired to the phone line. I have 3 phones hooked to the phone line each phone has a DSL Filter model Z-330P2J. Any would be appreciated.

Hi ccrushe, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
1] The answering system must have a DSL Filter on it.
2] Move the answering system to a different room, ie, away from the computer.
Try BBR, Broadband Reports / SBC general Forum, or ATM = All Things Mac.
    Good Luck. JP

  • On Safari https addresses would not work, while on Firefox this is no problem? What happened and what can I do to fix this?, On Safari https addresses would not work, while on Firefox this is no problem? What happened and what can I do to fix this?

On Safari all https addresses would not show up while on Firefox they just work fine. For example Facebook or the Appstore are not possible for me to see on Safari? How can I solve the problem?

    Hey juliane1205,
    First, try these steps:
Open Keychain Access, located in the Utilites folder in the Applications folder.
Choose Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid.
Enter your user name and password.
Select Verify and click Start. Any problems found will be displayed.
If there are problems, select Repair, and then click Start.
To change the Keychain First Aid settings, choose Keychain Access > Preferences, and then click First Aid.
Then I would repair disk permissions:
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.
Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check.
You can verify or repair permissions only on a disk with Mac OS X v10.7 Lion installed.
    Click First Aid.
    Do one of the following:
Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
And lastly, restart your computer, and see if that helps. If it doesn't, report back.

  • Safari display problems in https sites

I have some problems when trying to reach HTTPS sites with Safari (under Mountain Lion). I only get text display and no rendering of images. I works perfectly well with FireFox. Have the same behavior with Mac App Store which only displays text. and doesn't present the pages correctly. I tried to reset Safari and no success; check KeyChain, no success. Anyone has an idea to get this solved. Thanks

after many attempts, I resolved the problem finaly by reinstalling mountain lion (CMD R after the chime and reinstall option in the menu).

  • Safari HTTPS Firewall Proxy Problem...

    Hi everyone,
I am having a problem at work with safari. First of all, browsers like firefox, camino, and opera work fine. Browsers like Safari, Shiira, and Sunrise Browser cannot open https sites properly. I am always asked to type in username and password from the browser. Afterwards this login window appears again and again and I cannot read the https site or klick on anything. I have already tried aproxy to set the https proxy settings differently.
No I wonder if you have experienced similar problems and if anyone has a solution, since I would very much prefer Safari to Firefox, Camino or Opera...

    Hi All
Downloaded Safari on my PC at work, OS-Win XP and got some the same problem, but I'm not even able to change the proxy settings (under preferences/advance tab), as this has been locked by the sys admin. Do you know if there is away around this...? as they do not support Safari, but FIREFOX works fine...
    Cheers

  • Safari 4 problems - HTMLDataSet/Sliding Panels

    Hi,
I've been building a fairly basic photo gallery site and was having no problems with the site until I downloaded and installed Safari 4.  For some reason the detailRegions are not loading properly in Safari 4.  I have thumbnails in the sliding panels that load fine but the larger versions of the photos no longer appear in Safari below the sliding panels and on the right sidebar the paypal buttons no longer appear either.  IE and FF seem to be working fine still.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm very new to this so please bear with me if I have any glaring mistakes.  THANKS!!!

It doesn't work correctly in Firefox either,
If you check out generated code, you will see that the data ins't selected correctly, or that maybe your HTML is correctly.
For example.. type this in the url bar of your browser; javascript:alert(ds1.getData()[0]['HiRes_Id']); and you will see it alerts <span></span>.
So i would suggest to recheck your rowSelectors and validate your page for HTML errors.

THE UNFORTUNATE EVENT WITH SAFARI QUITTING UNEXPECTADLY
I have this problem last Sunday (September 10, 2006). My Safari keeps on quitting unexpectedly. At first, I thought it was just some random glitch because everything seems fine (other applications and programs are working smoothly).
But after an hour of using Safari, the quitting problem persisted (more than 10 times in an hour). Bothered by it, I finally decided to call Apple Care Canada (1-800-263-3394). My computer is barely a month old, so I decided that I probably need some Apple Care.
So, I called them around 2:12 pm (ET). Pressing the right options from the phone menu choices, an operator answered and asked me what is the issue. I told her my problem then she transferred me to a technical support agent. Turns out that there was a high demand for technical support agent. So I listened to some country music with a voice over saying: “Thank you for your patience. Your call is important to us. We will be with you shortly.” for about an hour and 16 minute. Finally, I hear another human being on the other end of the line.
After explaining my case, the agent asked me to create a “task” account (I only have one account in my computer). He wanted test whether the problem lies to the account or with the system in whole. So I complied. I created a new “task” account. Unfortunately, when I opened the Safari on the new account, Safari froze but all the rest seems fine. So the agent concluded that the problem lies to the system in whole.
The agent told me to collect the installation DVD so we could do an archive and install. So we did it. He told me it will take about 45 minutes to complete and regrettably he cannot hold the line for that long. He instead gave me a Case Number.
    TAKE NOTE:
    1. The technical agent DID NOT suggests nor thinks about what Barry suggested:
    a. Clear the Safari cache. Close Safari. Trash the preference file (com.apple.safari.plist). Open Safari and reenter personal preference.
    b. Trash Safari and all related files from the HD and reinstall once again with install DVD.
Which to me seems are very appropriate and reasonable fixes before suggesting the big gun of doing archive and install.
    2. The technical agent DID NOT warn me whatsoever of backing up my files nor REMINDING about back-up files just in case worst case scenario happens (which by the way IS in warning label in the ARCHIVE and INSTALL instruction page (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120).)
Anyways, unluckily for me, rather than fixing my Safari application, archive and install rendered me COMPUTERLESS FOR ATLEAST A WEEK.
When I was installing the first install disk everything seems fine. It is working smoothly. Then, I have to put the second disk. It is working all right.
Disk is loading perfectly… OOPS talked too soon.
The installer says “Writing iWeb installer script. Time remaining: about a minute”.
I thought, good only about a minute.
    So I waited.
    I stared at my computer.
Clocks ticking – 5 minutes later.
Hmmm… maybe the computer doesn’t know how to count time.
    More waiting.
    15 minutes more.
Still says “time remaining: about a minute” – oh well might as well eat.
Went down to eat and watched tennis for about 30 minutes.
Went back to the computer – WOW still about a minute.
    I started to fret.
Finally, cannot take the suspense, I called Apple Care once again.
I called around 5:00 pm (ET). Waited again for technical support agent. I was waiting for about 40 minutes or so when my phone ran out of battery and my line got disconnected.
So, I’m back to square one. I called again. It’s 7:00 pm already and still no sign of technical support agent. There are probably hundred of people needing a technical support because no one is answering, so I decided to call back later and go for a run instead.
My computer was still on with disk 2 inside of it during the whole time.
I called back again around 8:20 pm. Finally an agent answered around 9:10 pm. I explained to her my problem and she suggested doing a Disk Utility and a Hard Drive Repair. I did it. There seems to be no problem so she suggested to reinstall the disk 2 all over again. I complied.
Unfortunately the same thing happen. Disk 2 is in the verge of finishing up installing but it just doesn’t want to be completed.
I called Apple Care again. Tough luck it is past 9:00 pm and they usually closed at 9:00 pm. Better luck next time. The last technical support didn’t even bother to tell me that they clso at 9:00 considering I asked if I can call back if it is still not woking!!!
Don’t know what to do because I need the computer the next day. I decided to do what the Technical Support agent did last time. I did the disk utility and repair test, and reinstall the disk 2 again. I am too sleepy so I decided to leave the computer on and let the DVD finish up on its own around 1:00 am.
Woke up around 7:00, the same thing happens. It said: “about a minute” and nothing is happening. I left the computer on for the day and went to school/work CURSING MACINTOSH.
Note: The whole time even if you take out the Disk 2 you cannot do anything with the computer. It doesn’t want to boot in normal way (Mac OS), it always ask to finish installing disk 2.
I tried calling the Apple Care once again around 5:00 pm (ET) on September 11 (I know the World Trade Anniversary). Again, I waited an hour and 37 minutes before a technical support agent spoke to me. The agent told me that what I need is a product specialist so he transferred me to one, Chris from Hawaii.
Anyways, Chris is also at lost. He doesn’t know what to do and what seems the problem. Finally, he suggested two options:
    a. The install disk is probably the one at fault (the install disk is broken or something). He suggested sending a new set of install DVD and it will take 3-5 days for it to arrive and then I can reinstall it on my own once again.
    b. There is just something wrong with hard drive and suggested rebooting the whole hard drive and do a new clean installing again (this means erasing all my files and programs).
Uh oh! Here comes the waterworks. I started cursing Apple and calling Apple stupid. I also grovel by the way – (poor Chris). In fairness to Chris from Hawaii, he is very PATIENT with my tantrums and highly PROFESSIONAL! I salute you man!
But can you blame me? I have 32 GB of IMPORTANT and CLASSIFIED FILES in my computer. Most of them are results of my laboratory experiments, which by the way are highly important and utterly expensive and took months of hard work. The rest are presentations, which I was suppose to present to my supervisor that Monday, and other programs.
TAKE NOTE: If you guys are still complaining why we still don’t have an effective TREATMENT for AIDS! BLAME IT TO APPLE TECHINCAL SUPPORT WHO GAVE ME ADVICE TO RUIN MY COMPUTER and RUIN all MY EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. (peace!)
Anyways, I finally decided to reboot the computer. Chris suggested going to a service center in case a data recovery can be made. But the nearest Apple Service Center is not that near and it is already around 7:00-8:00 pm, and I’ll be damned if I pay a third party service company if I can get it free with the Apple Service Center.
So I end up booting the computer, hoping with all hopes that the problem lies to the hard drive and not the DVD. But all fails come to fails. The installation disk 2 once again fails to install properly.
So it means another call to the service center. Very clever of me, halfway through the installation of disk 2, I already started calling the Apple Care ( I have the gut feeling it is a install DVD problem). I still waited about an hour and a half before a technical support entertained me.
By the way I have the same technical support as last time (what a coincidence or Apple just don't have enough resources to hire more technical support - yeah right where did you use your money Apple!). He transferred me to a product specialist who is Steve from Seattle (or is it Dave). Anyhow, I end up ordering new sets of install DVD and now I AM COMPUTERLESS and FILE-less.
It’s a long story just because I am too worried about Safari quitting unexpectedly.
A VERY TRAGIC ENDING TO A VERY SIMPLE PROBLEM. (Sigh!)
So what’s the moral of the story. Oh there are quite a few:
    a. Back up your files.
    b. Buy a new computer as a back-up.
    c. Don’t go running to call Apple Care if you have minor problems with your computer.
    d. Check the discussion board first before calling Apple Care.
    e. Apple Care Support - think again.
    f. Apple Product specialist are the NICEST AGENTS!
    g. And once more we don't have a cure for AIDS.
