  • Safari & Firefox behaving badly when viewing pdf files

Since upgrading my Mac to Lion, Safari and Firefox have not displayed pdf files for viewing.
SAFARI:  When I click a pdf link in Safari, a dark grey blank page appears. When I try to save the pdf file to my desktop, an error message says the file is not properly formatted.
FIREFOX: When I click a pdf link in Firefox, a white blank page appears. I can successfully save the file to my desktop, and in turn open the file using Acrobat.
CHROME: Everything works normally...no problems found when viewing pdf files.
I tried dumping the plist file for both Safari and Firefox, and resetting both browsers clearing them of cache, etc., but none of that worked.
Has anyone else seen similar behavior? Anyone have a solution?
I have posted this problem twice in Apple's Safari Forum, but have had no response in almost two months.
    Thanks

In Safari you to have the Acrobat PDFviewer plugin installed, or the The PDFBrowser plugin by Schubert of Germany Installed.
If you use the PDFBrowser Plugin you need the 2.4.2 version in order to work with the version 5.1 of Safari and 2.2.3 version for Safari 5.05 and lower.
In FireFox  version 3.6.X and lower you need version of the PDFBrowser Plugin version 2.2.3 which also works with Safari 5.05 and lower. And version 2.4.2 for Safari 5.1 and above and FF 4.0 and above, and Seamonkey version 2.3 and above.
THE ADOBE PDFVIEWER PLUGIN has only worked with OSX for Safari. Adobe quit supporting any other browsers on the Macintosh with the roll out of OSX years ago except for Safari. And despite repeated request by many users, its gone on deaf ears.
As a result This Schubert fellow from Germany has had to fill the void. It works on "any" browser on the Market for Mac. And works for any browser for Windows except Internet Explorer.
The only thing it doesn't do is online forms which the Acrobat Plugin will. But since it only works with Safari its Useless. I'm not going to Crank up Safari just to fill in Forms.
Oh, you use to be able to install both plugins and would work fine. Now if both are installed neither works. Its either use the one that works on one Web Browser and allows form filling.
Or use the one that works on everything, but can't do forms. Oh Schubert on his Web site explains his is forbidden from installing support for forms.

  • Im having problems with my safari Web browser  to opening/viewing pdf files.

Im having problems with my safari Web browser to opening/viewing pdf files. I installed the 8.1.2 version But then when I click to open any PDF it says that Adobe PDF Viewer cannot find a compatible Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader to view this PDF. Please select one.
i can see the adobe reader but can not select it .

did you find a solution to this? my safari history is full of
explicit sites that i have not visited. i see a lot of info on how to remove it, but none on how to figure out how they got there.

  • Hi, We have an application  built using HTMl 5 and Javascript running on IPad2, iOS5.1 Safari 5.1. When we try to download a file(.pvw file) in that application safari throws "Download failed" error. Please suggest what needs to be done.

    Hi,
We have an application  built using HTMl 5 and Javascript running on IPad2, iOS5.1 Safari 5.1.
When a file url is clicked instead of asking for Save or Open or Cancel options, the file gets opened on IPad by default.
Is this default behaviour which cannot be changed or can it be configured to ask user preference?
When we try to download a file(.pvw file -> a model file) in the above application, safari throws "Download failed" error.
Please suggest what needs to be done.
    Regards,
    Pramod

Safari on an iPad in general does not allow downloading of files. That's a safety precaution in the iOS SDK to keep unauthorized content off of iOS devices. Safari will open from the web site file types that it can handle, but direct downloading isn't normal behavior, and I don't believe the behavior can be changed, though you can try asking in the developer forum, either here or the one to which you have access as a member of Apple's iOS developer program.
    Regards.

  • Non root user can delete root files, bug?

We're having an odd permissions based problem on Solaris 10 u5 x86_64, (new install, fully patched as of 2 days ago) It means that non root users can delete root owned files, which is something I've never seen before, and I've been doing this for almost 10 years.
We're installing into an 80Gb container on VMware ESX server 3.0.1. The OS takes 20Gb (2 processors, 4Gb memory, 8Gb swap) most of the remaining 60Gb is being used as both file systems and raw devices under disksuite as soft partitions. It's a new "bare metal" (in as much as there is no metal) install. I created the sybase user from scratch by hand editing passwd, group and shadow, buy copying and pasting the data out of the NIS maps. All I've done besides the install & patch is setup networking manually, and created the metadb's and the soft partitions and the mount points & newfs'ed & mounted three of them . I then changed ownership of /apps to be sybase:sybase, and handed it to the database team for the sybase install. they came back and said "should we be able to do this?" as they habitually run rm rf * knowing they can't delete root owned files, only now they can... This is true even if I just chgrp the directory and give them group write permissions. They can still delete anything owned by root, even if it doesn't have group permissions just like the lost+found directory. No other "real" machine we have, x86 or SPARC does this, but we've never installed u5 before either.
As you can imagine losing the lost+found directory is a bit of a problem, however what's really worrying me is if they can do that, what happens when they run sybase as the sybase user? If it borks can they trash the OS and write/overwrite random files?
It's a VM, so in as much that's not a problem, but the reason it's a VM is somebody wants to send a VM to a client as a demo, and at present it's highly unstable IMO.
Does anyone have any idea where to start? My thoughts are that it may be a VMware issue, (though the hardware and the guest OS is supported) it could be a bug, because I've never seen that weird newfs error before, and then I found this:
    http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6622243
Or it could be me, and the fact that I'm hand configuring it, and u5 now requires I do it "properly" with useradd, etc. I'd like to test, but the guy wants it built, and wants it now, so I patched it up, and gave it back to the database team and told them to be careful.
I'd be interested in you opinions regardless.
The full spec of the "machine" is below, sol10 is not it's name for obvious reasons, and I've hashed out the ID & GIUD for similar reasons.

An easy way to think of it is this -- everything in Unix is a file. Including directories; they are just a file which contains a list of the files in that directory, and pointers to them.
If the 'sybase' user has write permission on the directory, they have permission to edit that "list", and can add or remove files to the list. It doesn't matter who the files on the list belong to, because the files are not what is being modified. Only the list of files is being modified. (Of course, in Unix, if you erase the file's listing from all of the lists it's on, the file itself goes away for housekeeping purposes.)
One thing that would have stopped the 'sybase' user from removing the lost+found directory is if that directory itself had files in it -- without write permission to the lost+found directory, that user could not have removed those files, and since one cannot remove a non-empty directory, that operation would have failed. Since lost+found was empty in this case, it could be removed simply by having permission to write to the /apps directory.
This behavior does change if you set the sticky bit on the directory -- in that case, files may only be removed by the owner of the file or directory, or if the user has write permission to the file. This would have prevented the sybase user from removing the lost+found directory. (Note, this also applies to the 'rename' function call.) This would probably be the best way to handle your situation, since you apparently do want the sybase user to be able to add files to /apps, but do not want them to be able to remove lost+found.

  • In Lion, Safari 5.1 no longer plays .m3u files

In Lion, Safari 5.1 no longer plays .m3u files - it just downloads them, and dragging the file back into the browser doesn't do anything. This functionality used to work in 10.6 - the .m3u file would play directly in the browser. The .m3u files still do play directly in Firefox 5, so it doesn't seem to be an issue with the Quicktime plugin, as both browsers should be using the same one.

I just experienced this (trying to listen to audio previews at Amazon.com). If you are running the Click2Flash extension, set it to allow Flash on the domain. That allowed previews to play in Safari for me instead of downloading .m3u's.

  • Safari 6 bug (Can't download software files) - file not in download window

    Dear Everybody,
I insatlled Safari 6 and also afterwards ML, everything works fine on my macbook air but on my 2009 (early) iMac safari 6 has a severe problem. When I download software files such as a adove flash player dmg file, The file (link) loads in the browser bar until the blue bar reaches the right (not in download window) and then when it is done the browser window is black and the file is nowhere to be found?

Thanks Linc, that solved my problem - i had to re-download the SpeedDownload software and use the Uninstaller from there.
Seems SD isn't compatible with ML.

    Hello
I have this simple vbscript code which suppose to write all file names in some directory to a text file

    Dim FileList
    FileList = "list.txt"
    Dim Fname

    Set objFile = FSO.CreateTextFile(FileDirectory & "\" & FileList ,True)
    for each file in FileDirectory.files

    objFile.Write( ChrW(34) & FileDirectory & "\" & Fname & ChrW(34) & vbCrLf)
    Next
    objFile.Close
Everything goes fine while file names are in English but when some file name is non English or both  English with non English name (right to left languages) an error raised, so how to deal with this writing issue without changing the file name

I tested you code but it didn't worked for me (works fine for English file names but doesn't work with right to left language )

    It's good for that . . .
But also I don't keep all my stuff in my Mac.
    But not for that.
This older and not day-by-day usage files I want to store in the time machine.
You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up?   If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.
Is it possible to split TC in two partitions.
No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
You don't say what kind of Mac you have.  If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient.  In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.
Via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
You might also want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse the rest of the FAQ.

  • Removing non printable characters from an excel file using powershell

    Hello,
anyone know how to remove non printable characters from an excel file using powershell?
    thanks,
    jose.

To add - Excel is a binary file.  It cannot be managed via external methods easily.  You can write a macro that can do this.  Post in the Excel forum and explain what you are seeing and get the MVPs there to show you how to use the macro facility
to edit cells.  Outside of cell text "unprintable" characters are a normal part of Excel.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Cloning context file on db tier fails when run non-interactively

    Hi all,
I have a problem where cloning the DB tier context file using adclonectx.pl non-interactively using a pairsfile and noprompt fails in certain circumstances and continually returns this error
Target System Port Pool [0-99] : RC-00201: Error: Not a valid port pool number
If we clone from prod or uat (which are on different nodes) to non-prod it works fine, if we clone from a different non-prod environment (on the same node) it fails.
We can run adclonectx.pl interactively with the same pairsfile and it works, so I copied all of the variables in the log into the pairsfile and ran it non-interactively and it failed with the same error.
My understanding is that adclonectx.pl uses the source DB context file and the pairsfile to create the new context file. I've tried cloning the context file non-interactively from several different non-prod envs with the same error, so I don't think it's specific to 1 source env.
It seems to want to prompt for the portpool when it's on the same node as the source environment.
EBS 12.1.3, DB 11.2.0.3 RAC 2 node on Oracle Linux 5.
I've raised 3-9540409031 : adclonectx.pl on db Tier errors with RC-00201 when run non-interactively using pairsfile - but haven't got an answer yet.
This is the pairsfile with everthing in it - generated from an interactive session that worked.

this is the adclonectx.pl comand i use - I've checked all the env variables before running and they're all good

    pairsfile=$PAIRSFILE \
    initialnode noprompt
Any ideas, it's got 3 DBAs stumped...

That makes sense to me ... the pool parameter should be in the pairsfile, .. or in the parameters when calling it at command line
You can force the pool to be changed, even when you're on the same server. Actually, I would use different pools for any environment, different server or not. And, avoid the default pool as well. If you do it this way, one of the advantages is that you spot issues - like the one you have - much much earlier. In that case, you would need that extra parameter on every run.

  • Safari 4 wont open a local *.hta file as html

I have a local html file (a tiddlywiki) that I use on windows and mac. To use it on windows it needs the extension .hta - Safari 3 opened this file OK as a web page. Safari 4 just kicks it up in Finder. Can I force Safari to open local files like 'file://directory/blah.hta as a web page?

    Hi,
One thing you have to understand here is Webdynpro doesnot support java script.
So their is no way to do things at client side using the scripting.
What ever is possible is at the server side, when you say that the local file need to be read with out uploading to the server (FileuploadUI) looks a bit unrealistic with webdynpro.
I dont have idea about JSF integration to WD , if you can create Components that supports java script and then embed them using the JSF bridge might be of help in this scenario.
Other alternative could be a component in Flex (that too not sure)

  • Safari 5.1 can´t download dmg files

For a long time I couldn´t download dmg files or open PDF´s in Safari, every time when I tried to open or download a file Safari just opend a black screen and nothing else happend!
However..... I found a very simple solution which helped to solve both problems (Safari 5.1)
    Step 1:      Open FINDER -> Macintosh HD -> Libary -> Internet Plug-Ins
Step 2:      Transfer "ALL" files to your desktop! (do not just copy!!!)
Step 3:     Open Safari and empty cache and close Safari
Step 4:     Reopen Safari and try to open a PDF file or to download a dmg file ( at this point it was already working for me again!)
Step 5:     Transfer files from Desktop back to FINDER -> Macintosh HD -> Libary -> Internet Plug-Ins
    FINISH!!!!
If you experience any trouble again after Transfering the files back start again by step one and move at Step 5 always just one file to identify the file which seems to create the trouble!
I hope this simple steps helps for you guys as well
    Don Mahoni

These statements require an Adobe Viewer plugin
That's going to be a problem unfortunately, with Safari 5.1
Read here >  Apple Safari 5.1 and Adobe Reader/Acrobat Advisory
A workaround according to Adobe is to use another browser.
I personally have found that Firefox works just fine.
