SAP to Non-SAP Integration best Practices

Hi Folks,
Recently I demonstrated to few of my managers the integration of our SAP ISU with a 3rd Party MDUS System via SAP PI. A question which was repeatedly asked is 'Why SAP PI'? Isn't there any other way to do it? They did mention BAPIs and doing things directly in ABAP but I couldn't really answer as to how weigh one on the other in this particular scenario.
I do know that there are standard ES Bundles for achieving integration with 3rd Party Systems via SAP PI, We can do the interface and message mappings but
is it possible to achieve this integration with the 3rd Party MDUS System without using PI?
3rd party MDUS can only integrate via its web Services so how would they get called?
Whats the trade-off in case of Performance, Development Cost?
I am looking for best practices, recommendations, trade-offs and possibilities. Your input is very much appreciated.

Adil Khalil

  • About integration between SAP and non-SAP applications via javaidoc classes

    Hi,All
Now we are implementing a SAP-Retail project,we encounter a problem of integration between SAP and non-SAP applications(POS),we want to set Inbound/Outbound between SAP and POS applications realtimely,POS can connect to the SAP system via VPN,weather it can be implemented?
I conceive to implement it with SAP Java Connector IDoc Class,I don't know weather it is the best solution? If not, please give some other proposal.
I have download the classes from SAP website and try it with the samples provided by SAP(JCoIDocSample1.java/JCoIDocSample3.java),In my testing,Inbound is succeed, but,in SAP-Retail IS,standard Outbound message type is defined via file port, some one told me that SAP Java Connector IDoc Class can only receive idocs from tRFC port?is it true?If not, please tell me how to deploy in SAP so java program can receive idocs from file port?

We too are interested in finding information on integration between SAP and Intergraph.  Were you able to obtain information and I was wondering if could share this with us.
    Thanks,

  • Using ale u can send from sap to sap and sap to non sap systems

    hi,
using ale u can send from sap to sap and sap to non sap systems,
then what is diff b/w ALE and EDI

    Hello KALYAN KUMAR,
    Application Link Enabling (ALE)
1.You distribute data using ALE if you want to communicate from one system to one or more other (mostly internal) systems.
2.ALE transfers data in IDoc format and uses the methods of tRFC for data transfer.
3.ALE enables the integration of business processes across several SAP or non-SAP systems.
    Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
1.You use EDI if you want to exchange business application documents with an (external) partner system (for example, a customer or vendor).
    2. The SAP system sends EDI messages in IDoc format to an EDI subsystem, where they are converted to a universal EDI standard (UN/EDIFACT or ANSI/X12).
    3. This enables communication with non-SAP systems.
By definition, two partners are involved in the process in an EDI application scenario: The sender and the recipient of an EDI message
I hope u understands the difference:)

  • SAP to non-SAP Communication Using Proxy Framwork

    Hi all,
While searching for the connection option for the B2B collaboration between SAP and non-SAP business system, i found that there are two ways we can do it.
One using Adapters and another using Proxy Framework.
In our case We are on SAP Enterprise and non-SAP business partners are using I2, legacy system.
They are not using Rosettanet PIPS, so I can not use RNIF or any other adapter for the inbound or outbound operation.
My question is If we use proxy framework, what needs to be done at the non-SAP business system . Do we need to install proxy runtime and how does this proxy runtime will communicate with the application in non-SAP system.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Ruby,
You can use proxies for communicating with ABAP 6.20 systems and above and for J2EE applications.
For B2B communication you would normally use an adapter for example plain HTTP, SOAP or RNIF ...
An alternative is to install the XI PCK on the partner side. The PCK is essentially a standalone version of the XI Adapter Engine installed locally at the partner. This enables a scenario where XI communicates with the PCK over HTTP and then an adapter (file, JDBC ...) is used to communicate with the legacy system and vice versa.

  • SSO for SAP and Non-SAP applications without Enterprise Portal

    Dear all,
Is it possible to implement SSO for both SAP and non-SAP applications without involvement of EP at all?
I have gone through this link.
    <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/e5/4344b6d24a05408ca4faa94554e851/frameset.htm">http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/e5/4344b6d24a05408ca4faa94554e851/frameset.htm</a>
But I still i am not able to get the precise answer on how to enable SSO for both  SAP and non-SAP applications without EP.
We have decided not to implement EP in first phase of SAP implementation. But we need to enable SSO for other SAP and Non-SAP applications.
A detailed description on how to deal this kind of scenarios will be helpful.
    Thanks.

A client of our's uses <b>SAP Enterprise Portal</b>, and is using the SAP SSO, which is implemented with tickets, and requires the use of SAPSECULIB.  My company provides an application for this client, and our application in hosted in our data center for the client, as a Software as a Service application, obviously across the internet.  Our client, which owns a SAP license, has asked that we support the SAP SSO as a non-SAP SSO application.  The client user's SSO ticket will be created from SAP EP, and then passed across the internet to our application, and we are to use that SSO ticket as an authentication ticket to our application.  I beleive I know how to do this work technically, having reviewed the SAP document named: "Dynamic Library for Verifying SSO Tickets in Third-Party Software"   Specification   Version 2.00  December 2005.
My question is, does my company have the right to use the SAPSECULIB?  Where is the official download and <b>license</b> download, that indicates we can download this library, and use it to support a SAP customer?  We do not own a SAP license.  Thank you for your help.  I have searched many places in SAP support.<b></b>

  • SAP and Non-SAP data to Xcelsius

    Hi Experts,
I m new to Xcelsius and i a m currently working on Xcelsius project, i need help on approach to bring both SAP and Non-SAP data to Xcelsius. Here the scenario goes on....
Total 6 plants are there, out of 6, 4 plants are on SAP and other 2 plants are on Non-SAP (Excel)
The requirement is to develop a dashboard to see all the plants details (both SAP and Non-SAP)
The approach i suggested for SAP: ECC --> BW --> InfoProvider --> Query --> QaaWS --> Xcelsius
For non-sap, data is available in excel, so we can bring that data directly to xcelsius, but problem is how to make it dynamaic because data in excel changes daily.
So my doubt is, if i  develop a universe on excel files, then how to combine both SAP and Non-SAP universes. Is Data Federator is required for this or is there any approach to bring both SAP and Non-SAP data to Xcelsius.
Can any one help me on this
    Thanks & Regards
    Ramakrishna Kamurthy

    hi
Another approach which i have used in the past is to have data in XML format, placed on a web server.  When my data changes daily, i just export my data from excel or whatever source into the XML format..
Use the XML data connector to bring into xcelsius.
    thanks.. hope this helps
    regards

  • SAP BO Dashboards 4.1 best practice on layout and components

    Dear SCN,
I have requirement to create a BO 4.1 dashboard with data & Visualization based on a excel sheet which is currently in use as a Mgmt dashboard. The current excel dashboard is having more than 100 KPIs in one view which is readable only if you put in on a slide and view it in full screen by running a slideshow.
    Question 1:
    1. Being the suggested size of the Xcelsius canvas not more than 1024 X 768 so that it is viewable with out scroll bar in BI launchpad or in any browser or in pdf, I am trying to confirm in this forum that the canvas size of 1024 X 768 is the recommended maximum size for the dashboard to get the clear view in any browser/BI launchpad . Pls confirm as it will help me in doing the design for the KPIs and its visualization.
    Question 2:
    1. I am using the BICS connection and accessing the source data from BW. Because the no. of KPIs are more and ranging between 10 cubes and 40 queries as the data is across different modules, I would like to know what is the recommended no. of connections for queries /cubes in dashboard using BICS connectivity which does not affect the performance
    2. For the same dashboard using BICS connection, What is ideal number of components like Charts/Scorecard/Spreadsheet table that is recommended to use to ensure better performance?
I appreciate your answers which can help the finalization of the dashboard design for this dashboard of data and visualization requirements which is very high when compared to the normal dashboards.
    Thanks and Regards
    Jana

    Hi Suman,
Thanks for your answers. You answers and links which you have attached are helpful and It answered my questions related to canvas size and Connections.
I am expecting some benchmark numbers as per the best practices with respect to the No. of components to be used to ensure the better loading of the dashboard. As the increase in number of components increase the size of the dashboard and also it requires more time to load the data for the components, I am looking for the number as per the best practice by considering the below points.
    1. When I say the no. of components, I am not considering the components like label, text box, combo box or list box. I am considering the components which is used for visualization and interactive drill down on top of the visualized charts ( For Eg. Column charts, Pie charts, Gauges ).
2.I am not going to use more calculations/formulas in my dashboards as the values and structure are almost the same with the BEx query.
    3.Having around 10 to 12 connections.
4.The data sets are not more than 900 rows totally. For any control, we will be binding only 100 rows at the max as the data for the KPIs are summarized at the year/month level at the BW layer.
Since the KPIs are more, the Visualizations are more and we can't re-use the Visualization charts for most of the KPIs. Currently I am ending up with ~35 charts/ gauges along with other label and selection controls which I will be using to show 100 KPIs with unique visualization requirements and I am going for the tab-wise layout with more dynamic to accommodate and separate logically.
Hope these details will give clear picture of why I am looking for the Benchmark on No. of components .
    I appreciate your help!
    Thanks and Regards

  • Workflow & Web Dynpro integration - best practice?

    Hi,
I am working on ECC6 and EP7 and looking at building some workflow approval scenarios for Travel Management.  I need to move away from the SAP supplied approval scenarios to meet our business requirements.
What I'm looking for is a 'best practice' for integrating a Web Dynpro application (for ABAP) which will be the basis of our approval workitem.  I have seen a number of presentations which talk about integrating the user decision task (BOR object DECISION) into a web dynpro application.  I have also seen an approach where the FM WDY_EXECUTE_IN_PLACE is used to call a Web Dynpro application from within a BOR object method.
I guess I'm wondering if there is an approach that provides a cleaner integration then either of the above approaches as they both appear (well to me anyway!) to have limitations.  Is there a way for example of implementing an ABAP class method as the basis of the approval task that cleanly integrates with the Web Dynpro application?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Michael Arter

    Hello,
Are you going to use the Universal worklist in your portal? If yes, that will bring you more possibilitites. Then you don't have to code anything into your business object - instead in portal (UWL configuration) you can define what which WD application is launched when the user clicks the task in UWL.
If you are going to use business workplace and just launch WD applications from there, then you probably just need to use WDY_EXECUTE_IN_PLACE (or any other suitable way to launch WD application from ABAP).
    >Is there a way for example of implementing an ABAP class method as the basis of the approval task that cleanly integrates with the Web Dynpro application?
Yes, but what is really the need for this? Did you know that you can replace the methods of your BO as methods of an ABAP class? Just implement the IF_WORKFLOW interface for your class, and you can use it in your workflow then just like the BO. If you want to "replace" the whole BO with your ABAP class, just take a look to Jocelyn Dart's blog series about the subject. But as I said, it is not really necessary to do this - especially if you already have lot of custom code in your custom business object - then it is probably a good idea to continue using it for your custom stuff.

  • Interface b/w SAP and NON SAP system

    Hi GEMS,
Please give me some suggestion .My requirement is i have to transfer data from sap system to non sap system.
There is no middleware between these systems. The data will be in the xml format.
Please help me regarding these how can we link these systems and transfer data
    Best Regards,
    Phani

Please let us us know the platform of the non-sap system such as JAVA/.Net. It's can be done using PI/XI.
As per my experience, I've worked with only SAP JCO and .NET connectors. These connectors can be downloaded from service marketplace and needs to be installed on the non SAP platform. The Data transfer can be done through RFCs, which will be called from the non-sap systems.
Also, the data needs to be in XML format. XML transformations can be created using transaction XSLT_TOOL to convert the ABAP data to XML and viceversa. The generated XML string can be passed to non SAP system through RFC from SAP.
If the process is not synchronous, another option can be dumping the SAP data to FTP, which will be used by the non-sap system whenever required.

  • Interface between sap to non sap using edi idoc

    hello abaper's,
i have requirment on creating Interface program for downloading files(PO)  from Non-sap system  to sap system using EDI Idoc techniques.pls give me a good tips for this requirment..
    With Regards
    MurugeshRajeev

    Hello,
First of all, we'll need to identify as to what we want to do with the PO Data. For example, If we want to Create Sales Order, there is already a Posting Program available with the Name IDOC_INPUT_ORDERS (FM). This is useful for Creating a Sales Order automatically whenever a PO IDoc is received.
Here is the Information for processing Standard IDoc.
    1. WE30 - ORDERS05 - IDoc  Type
    2. WE31 - Segment Definition for the IDoc Type
    3. WE81 - Logical Message Types (ORDERS)
    4. WE82 - Assigning the Message Type to IDoc Type
    5. WE42 - Define Process Code
    6. BD51 - If you want to Code a Custom Function Module,
then after creating it, you need to register the same
Function Module in this Transaction Code.
    7. WE57 - Assign Message Type / IDoc Type / FM group.
    8. WE20 - Partner Profiles
    9. WE21 - Port Definitions
    Hope this information was helpful.

    Hi,
Can any one help  me, how to connect to non sap server using 'HTTP connection to Extn. Server'(G)
    in SM59.
What is the "Service No" and "Path Prefix" in the above connection type.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Service No is the extrenal system id. it is a number like 1080, 5000 ..etc
Path Prefix is the path of the connection is the external system like if your external system is xxx
full path for your connection is xxx.com/test.xml
    means path prefix is test.xml

  • Connect b/w SAP and Non SAP -system

    Hi All,
I have a requirement where i need to connect between a SAP system and Non-Sap System.
the front end is an E-Build tool (for construction Industry) from where the user will pick the data and the data should get store at the backend i.e in the SAP system.
E-build is a tool for construction industry with lots of flexible options for the user to check for their house, along with their prices.
These all data needs to be captured and store at the backend.
Can any one suggest me which method shall i go for this in ABAP(and How)  or need to go for the XI-Netweaver or EP technology.
    Thanks & Regards
    Mona

you better to go for middleware tools .  keep files( whichs contains data to be stored in SAP)  in one folder at 3p systems  and  middleware adapters will pick that filles automatically and sent it to Application server or then process the data into SAP.
    tks.. venkat
