Save system front panel

My VI requires a user to enter values into 7 controls and then push run. Can anyone recommend an easy way to develop a little "save" feature, where the user can save "profiles" (values in the controls) and recall them? Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Use an ini file or something like this.

  • How to Save & reload front panel position

I would like to save the front panel position into an ini file or registry, so that the next time the program is used, it comes up where the user left it.
With the Invode Method: Front Panel.Run-Time postition.Get positon
I can get all the position data I want:
    left-top
    state
    monitor
However...  How do I set the same information at startup?
There's no  Front Panel.Run-Time Position.Set position. as far as I can see...
To set position, state and monitor values, it seems I need to first call  FP.Open for the state, then FP.Run-Time Position.Centered to select the monitor, and then FP.Run-Time Position.Custom to set the position....
That looks weird and complicated...    Am I missing something here?   Is there a more elegant approach?

NI explains the difference between Property nodes and Invoke nodes as this.
Property nodes access the properties of an object and allow you to read/write those properties.
Invoke nodes perform actions on an application or VI allowing you to get and sometimes set attributes of those actions.
Sometimes there is some overlap between Properties and Methods as you noticed with the "Get Position" method and the "Panel.Position" property. But most of the Methods do not have a similar Property. For instance, there is a Method you can use on a front panel item called "Get Image". This will return image data about the item that will let you save the items current visual appearance to a graphics file. (.bmp, .png, .jpg) There is no equivalent property to do this.
So it really depends on what you are trying to do as to which one you end up using.

  • Save a front panel image problem

Hi, i'm trying to save at run-time an image of my front panel, and the little code with the Invoke Node (FP.GetImage) works well but there is a problem, i have a background image for my front panel and this image don't show up in the image saved so i have an image with controls and graphs but a blank background. Is there some way to obtain an image of my ENTIRE front panel? Thanks

    Hi,
Here's how I got ride of tghis issue, I use Windows "printscreen" function by simulating a keyboard stroke and then I get the data from clipboard (crop it it necessary) and save the image.
What I like about it is that the "crop" makes it easy to get just what I want when there's more than one monitor.
What I don't like is that it's a windows only solution.
    Hope it helps

  • How to save settings in the front panel to different files and retrieve it later?

How to save the front-panel controllers' settings to different files and retrieve it later?
What I've archived is the "Save Settings" function, but when trying to "Reload Settings", I can only retrieve the saved data to front-panel indicators, but not the controllers!
Can anybody give me some advises?
    Thanks in advanced!

    Hi
Just write the retrieved data to a local variable (but make it writable first) or property node of the controls.
    Hope this helps.

  • Save and recall front panel configuration on FPGA

First of all, I am a first time user of Labview.  The application is with an FPGA on a NI-9146 board.
My question is, I would like to save the front panel settings when I exit the application, then recall them the next time the application is started.
Seems to be a few ways to do this but are not supported with the FPGA module.
The application is fairly straight forward timing and the Windows host PC will provide a GUI to the operator.
    Solved!

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong, but this task is more tedious then it needs to be.
The normal way of doing this on the FPGA is to plop down a FPGA read function for every control on the FPGA front panel, then write them to a file.  Probably using an OpenG function, but really something like the binary write would work if you don't expect to add/remove items.  Then when the application starts you need to reverse the process ploping down a FPGA write function for every control.
Now there is a slighly easier way that in theory works in a limited use case.  The FPGA VI when running is just like a normal VI and you can get a reference to it.  Here you could run the OpenG Write Panel to INI, and Read Panel from INI.  These are two canned functions that save tons of time.  Now the reason this might not work for most FPGA developers is because in the end, the goal is to not see the FPGA VI and instead only run the bit file and call into the FPGA using the hooks NI provides.  It sounds like you are going to have the VI shown anyway so this method may actually work for you.
It does kinda suck and I think it would be nice if NI had a way to read and write all FPGA front panel controls at once for things like this.

  • TDMS Low level file functions and Saving Front Panel image

Am using TDMS low level file functions to save while also plotting data in my data acquisition programme.  However, I also want to programmatically be saving the front panel image on every run of my data acquisition.  I have coded all other aspects, except the behavior of functionality of saving the front panel image on every successive runs of the application.  Unfortunately, I just have no idea on how to code this aspect on LabVIEW, and all effort to search for example codes on so far have not been successful.
I would appreciate any useful hints or steps from anyone for me to follow, in order to accomplish this behavior, and that is being able to programmatically save my front panel images while using TDMS low level file functions in my File IO system of my application.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to display PSA screen capture on Front Panel

Do you actually need to save the front panel image?  Or do you want to save a graph of the signal (spectrum) that you acquired?  If the latter will do the trick, you can simply read the waveform over GPIB (or whichever means you control the analyzer) into an array that is plotted to a waveform graph in LabVIEW.  You then save the image of the waveform graph as an image.
Since you have all the data, you can even save the data which can be viewed later (and not only by LabVIEW).

  • Example on how to use the NI "saving a front panel img to file" on a prog.

New to the labview program - I'm trying to save the front panel of the displayed output to file. I downloaded "Panel_Image_to_File.zip" from the NI site. But I'm having problem using the code to our program so as to save the image as a jpeg.
A simple example on how to use the code or any other code that will be able to save the front panel to a specified folder will be great.

All you should need is an invoke node of VI class and the the method Get Panel Image. Wire the Image Data output to the Write JPEG File on the Graphics & Sound>Graphics Formats palette. The Invoke Node is on the application Control palette. When it's on the diagram, right click and select Class>VI Server>VI. Right click on it again and select Methods>Get Panel Image.

Hey i got a graph , few indicators and controls assocaited with my program to log data.
After my test is done can i save  my front panel to a file so that i can reopen it with all parameters and graphs being dislayed???are there such setting or any other way ?

    Hi sdi,
there's an "invoke node"-method "Get Panel Image" that gives you all data needed to save a picture using one of the "write picture file" functions.
You can also make your own routine to save the values of all controls/indicators in Configuration files (there are many threads on this topic here in the forum).

  • Save front panel to bmp - not working anymore in LV7

    Hi Folks:
I had this VI working perfectly in LV6.1. When Labview picture format fxs changed in lv7, I modified the VI to what I believe is correct but cannot get a front panel to save to bmp, png, jpg, or htm format as I had been easily doing before. I am attaching an llb and request someone test on their system. test.vi is the top level VI to run.

I got this to work after a couple of tries. For some reason it did not work at first then after I opened all your subs and closed them all it worked fine and continued to work fine. HMM very interesting. attached is a version I did very quickly and worked the first time but really you are doing nothing different.

  • Close Front Panel Causes System Hang.

I have an application where there are several front panels that I would like to have open at once, but where when they stop they would close.  I was using the scripting function fp.close - but as the application has got more complicated this seems to work less and less well.  Basically when i hit close, the system hangs for a few seconds, then the time critical stuff i have tends to timeout and then crash, and everything goes funny for a while.
My (uneducated) guess is that when it closes a front panel it drops loads of stuff straight out of memory - in an uncontrolled way.
After going for a cup of coffee it usually sorts itself out.  But clearly this isn't a sustainable solution for my application or my kidneys.
Am I doing something wrong? - Is there something i should do to allow the Vi to finish before i try to close it? Should i be releasing references or somethign to make things better.  I thought about running the close vi sub as a new thread - but not sure if this would actually do anything different.
Attached - the subroutine that i pass a vi ref to.

There's nothing in the attached VI that would necessarily cause your problem. I would, however, suggest that you feed your reference through the nodes in proper flow control method rather than branching off like you've done.
When a VI fails to close quickly, I have most often found it's due to open references which aren't explicitly closed. File references, VI references, multiple calls in a loop acquiring the same reference over and over without releasing it, .NET calls not being closed - that kind of thing.

  • How to save the data that a user has written in a table (front panel) by using a "press button"?

    Hi,
I have the following situation. I need to be able to save the data I write in a table (front panel) when desired.
This allows me to modify, add new data, etc in the "Table" when wanted and to SAVE the latest information when wanted.
I need to save all the table data by using ONLY one button.
    Thanks for the help!
    Kind regards,
    Amaloa S.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the feedback. :-)
    Your answered helped.
In this case I need to save the Data into an ARRAY.
Now I have the following issue. I will try to explain:
    Suppose that I have following:
    1. Several GROUPS of Data like this:
        ER-1234
        ER-3245
        ER-4786
        ER-9080
    2. Each GROUP has the following ELEMENTS:
A, Bi, Pb, Sn, Sn, Cr, Ni, Ca, ...., Al
       So it would be like
ER-1234: A, Bi, Pb, Sn, Sn, Cr, Ni, Ca, ...., Al
ER-3245: A, Bi, Pb, Sn, Sn, Cr, Ni, Ca, ...., Al
ER-4786: A, Bi, Pb, Sn, Sn, Cr, Ni, Ca, ...., Al
ER-9080: A, Bi, Pb, Sn, Sn, Cr, Ni, Ca, ...., Al
     3. An each ELEMENT has DATA that I need to save, BUT! that I need to be able to get by specifying the group and the element.
        A:
             2,3   2,4    2, 8,   2,8
             2,2   2,3    2, 7,   2,6
             2,1   2,6    2, 6,   2,7
             2,5   2,4    2, 5,   2,3
How can I save the ELEMENT "A" Data with the label of the GROUP and the ELEMENT so that I can recongnize it when I need to get the DATA again?
    Thanks for the help!
    Best regards,
    Amaloa.

  • I want to save an image of the front panel, (with data), after every VI run

This Knowledgebase also has some information on programatically saving VI images

(KB 197BB7VJ if the link doesn't work).
Note that you don't have to put the code in the VI you are running in order to save it to a file, so you don't actually have to modify your VI. You can just run a seperate VI that uses the VI name from the first one (I've attached a VI which could either be run standalone or used as a SubVI, as well as an example of using it as a SubVI).
If you don't want to do it programatically you could just hit the print screen button on your keyboard and then paste it into paint and crop off the extra windows stuff.

  • Save Part of Front Panel as picture - sharing VI and asking for advices

    Hi,
    I use LabVIEW 8.2.1. (DSC&RT),
It is common (at my work) that we want to save some parts of the Front Panel and to add it to the LogBook.
we usually do PrintScreen and then cut the picture to the boundaries we want using 'Paint'.
I have created a simple procedure that makes it easier and the user can now select the boundaries of the picture at the Front Panel.
You can see the 2 VI's attached, (try2.vi is a sub vi of try.vi)
Open 'try.vi' and press 'select boundaries' button and drag the boudaries with your mouse,
after you have selected the boudaries, press 'save picture' button.
I hope there are no bugs.
Originally I have wanted to use drag and drop, but i didn't really understand what is going on behind the scenes
    when I used it.
For example - look at the example (at NI Example Finder at LabVIEW) 'Drag and Drop - Multiple Data Types to Start Drag.vi'
    (C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.2\examples\general\dragdrop\Drag and Drop - Multiple Data Types to Start Drag.vi)
(or via typing 'drop' in at the NI Example Finder search)
    1. I don't understand how the 'Drag and Drop Data' (located at the Application Control Palette)
    2. I don't understand the inside terminals of the Event Structure of 'Drag Enter' and 'Drop' -
for example - 'available data names' and 'accepted?'
where can I get information help written about any of the Event Structure inside terminals?
(it does not appear in the Context Help when I enter with the mouse)
    3. Do you have any comments on the VI  I did ?
4.I am planning to use this VI as a part of Log-In data to a follow-up LogBook Using Mysql as Database and NI sql connectivity toolkit,
so users will be able to insert information to the LogBook from the Front Panel, and attach pictures of the Front Panel.
Did anyone here has performed anything similar ?
If you send me corrections of someting or any other NI item, please send it in a version that I can see it (I use Labview 8.2.1 DSC&RT)
    Sincerely Yours,
    Amitai Abramson.

There are examples that come with the database connectivity toolkit so you are going to have to be more specific about your question. Whether you call it a logbook or something else, it's still a database and a database write is a pretty generic opertation. If you need help in the design of the database, then you should say that is what you need.
The event data is going to change depending on the event and the type of control. Again, do you have a specific question?

  • Front Panel values lost upon save

I am just taking my first steps with Labview. I have created a couple of VIs and have managed to get I2C communication happening through a third party DAQ box. The problem I am having is fairly simple, I am trying to save VIs but they are not retaining the values I have entered in the Front Panel.
I have a top level VI and a couple of subVIs that contain lower level functionality for sending I2C messages. The top level VI has a couple of value controls that let me enter device addresses, etc. It also has groups of toggle switches that I am using to set bits that I later combine into bytes of data that I can send.
But whenever I save a VI the front panel settings are defaulting to some other value. I dont understand it, I just want the value box to hold the number I entered. And more importantly in this case I need the array of toggle switches to stay where I set them so when I run it again the same bytes are transmitted. But each time I open the VI, the toggle switches are all greyed out and set to 0.
Is this normal? How do I get controls to retain there values? Is there a design reason they do not?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Solved!

You may also consider initializing these values from a file. There are lots of posts which go into details about how you can do this. This is a much more flexible and maintainable approach then relying on the default value of a control.
