Saved files take a long time to appear on Server or Desktop

We have a network of nearly 40 macs, Panther Server, mostly panther clients but the newer machines are on 10.4.
All of the newer machines exhibit the problem in that files saved to the server or to the desktop take a long time to appear.
It appears to be a refresh issue, as on the server other clients can see the file straight away and locally the files can be seen on the desktop via the terminal.
Force quitting the finder forces the files to appear but this is not a solution.
The clients which have the problem all run 10.4 and the Server is 10.3. The 10.3 clients do not exhibit the same issues.

I have also seen this issue at one of my larger clients (50+ workstations).
The issues seems isolated to 10.4.5 or higher. Our workstations with 10.4.2 did not exhibit this problem. It is not an issue with hardware (we have seen this on an iBook G3 and various G5 tower models). Nor does it appear to be server-related: we have seen the issue saving locally with no servers mounted. We have seen the issue when saving from Adobe CS apps, MS Office apps, and from system apps (like TextEdit). Deleting com.apple.finder.plist from the user's home Library and then relaunching the Finder gets relief for a short time but the problem returns soon after. plutil reports the file is OK. The volume directory is fine, the permissions check out, and caches have been purged, to no avail.
Like you, summersault, I am able to see the saved file on the command line, and when my users Force Quit the Finder, the file appears. Other workarounds, like the Nudge contextual menu, do not work.
I have submitted the error via apple.com/feedback and would encourage you to do the same.
Anxiously awaiting 10.4.7...

  • Previewing files takes a long time when trying to attach them

Whenever i try to preview files while trying to attach them in mail..once the file is selected it takes a long time to preview and hence be attached. First it was a problem with finder taking ages to preview...i sorted this out..but not the mail thing. Even after running disk utility, repairing permissions, cache cleaning and removing the com.apple.mail.plist file ..It didn't work. I started seeing the same problem in adium when I was trying to select a picture from a folder to change my display pic. Fortunately it hasn't happened in word or excel.
    Can anyone help with problem??

  • Excel files with fields linked to other excel files take a long time to open from SharePoint library

Trying to track a problem for a user.
Most of the documents opened from our SharePoint libraries appear to open in a timely fashion.
But...one user has noticed an issue, and I just noticed something with her files that are a little less common than other stuff we've seen.
she has a lot of pricelist excel files.  there are some master price list files, and then other files that link to fields from within the master files.
the files that contain links to other files appear to be the ones that open very slowly.
the files are being opened via excel itself, not the owa viewer or editor.
is there a trick to setting up either the library, the site, site collection or web app... or some client-side setting that affects how quickly/efficiently excel will open files that link to other excel files shared within sharepoint?

    Hi  carphuntin_god,
According to your description, my understanding  is that when you click a hyperlink which redirect to other files , the file are opened very slowly via excel client.
How about you download the same file and open it using excel client? If it is opened quite fast, the issue should be caused by some third-party add-ins in the office program or antivirus soft.

If you want to open the files using excel service after click the link in the excel file, you can create the hyperlink in the following way:
    General Syntax:
    http://<server_name>/<site_name>/_layouts/ xlviewer.aspx?id=<workbook path>&range=<location>
    For example:

    http://<server name> / <site name> / <library name>/<your file name> ?web=1

  • Saving Video Takes a LONG Time

Howdy, everyone. I am currently shopping around for a video editing application, and I'm using the trial version of Adobe Premiere Elements. I like everything about it so far, except for one thing. It takes a very long time to save the final video file (from the Share tab). I've noticed that it gets to 50% fairly quickly, probably under five minutes, and at that point the progress bar slows to a crawl. It takes more than two hours for the last 50% to complete. Is this unusual, or is this what I should expect?
Here's a little background of my project, in case that helps.
The video project is just under 30 minutes.
From the Share tab, I'm choosing to Export files for viewing on computers.
The type of video I want is WMV (Windows Media). I cannot vary from this format. It's a requirement of the project.
Frame size: 1024 x 768. At this time I cannot vary from this size. The video must be 1024 x 768.
    Frame Rate: 30 fps
Audio Setting: 48kbps, 44 kHz, mono CBR
    Codec: Windows Media 9
    Encoding Passes: 1
Bitrate Mode: Constant  (I've also tried Variable Quality, but noticed no difference in rendering time)
Maximum Bitrate: 200 kbps (The first time, I tried 2,000 kbps but I noticed no difference in rendering time)
Image Quality: 3 (I've also tried 90 but again with no noticable difference in rendering time)
    My Laptop:
    Windows XP Pro SP3
    Intel Core2 Duo 2.2GHz
    2GB of RAM
The window says I should expect the video size to be 53MB in size, which seems reasonable. But when it finishes, it's more than ten times larger than that estimation. I don't understand why the filesize is so large and the rendering time is so long.
Is my rendering time being governed or throttled back because I'm using a trial version of Premiere Elements?
If not, what suggestions do you all have for me? Am I being unreasonable by expecting my rendering time to be quicker than the duration of the video?
Thanks in advance for your help. Please let me know if I can provide any other details.

WMV is a heavily-compressed format/CODEC, and the processing time will depend on several factors:
Your CPU, which is not that powerful in your case
Your I/O sub-system, which is likely a single HDD on your laptop
The source footage. What is your source footage?
Any Effects added to that footage. Do you have any Effects?
Each of those will have an impact on the time required.
The trial has only one main limitation - the watermark. Now, there are some components, that have to be activated, but are not with the trial, but they would be evident with Import of your source footage, if it's an issue.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Uploading files takes a long time

And when I say long time, I mean a ridiculously long time.  Hours at least.  Sometimes I have to leave my laptop on overnight to upload one song.  I know downloading fast is more important, but for music I make myself or friends make it just takes FOREVER before you can hear it on the iPod.  Why is that?  Is there any fix for it?  It usually works, eventually, but… not till long after the shine is off a new song.

    Scott Nash wrote:

For custom made music like this, ITunes Match does not really offer you any advantage.  iTunes Match will try to substitute something from the iTunes library when you do an upload.  For custom made music, this is clearly impossible.  So why don't you cut iTunes Match out of the process, and simply sync the music to your iPod as if you were not an iTunes Match subscriber?

  • Incoming emails take a long time on OS X Server

I had Lion Server 10.7 and recently upgraded to 10.8 in hopes that this problem would go away but it hasn't.
I find that emails (particularily but not limited to incoming emails) are very slow to arrive. Last week, a client emailed me in the morning about our appointment later that day... I didn't receive it until that evening. My wife apparently emailed me three times today and I've yet to get them... one was a response to an email that I sent her.
Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone heard of this type of thing happening due to a poorly set up DNS?

    probably grey-listing.
Mail from new senders is delayed.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greylisting
Its very effective in fighting spam, but does introduce delays which many find unnaceptable
If you would like to disable it
    Change the setting via Terminal
sudo serveradmin settings mail:postfix:greylist_disable = yes
    Then activate the change
    sudo postfix reload

  • Dps takes a long time to notice a server is down

We are using DPS 5.2 with SunOne 5.2 Directories in Solaris 9. When one of the servers defined in the load balancing setup is down the DPS still routes connections to the server that is down, returning a "cannot connect" error. Have other people seen this? Is there a work around. We used idar 5.0 before and the proxy would not route connections to a server that was down.
    Thanks for you help.

Get patch 5207 from Sun support. This should correct the problem in addition to giving a command line option to adjust the interval used to check the server's availability.

  • When I click Add Bookmark the bookmark window takes a long time showing up and then starts appearing and disappearing.

I click on Bookmarks in the Menu Bar. Then I scroll to Add Bookmark and click on that. Normally a Window appears allowing me to select where I want the new bookmark saved. I am using windows 7, internet explorer 8.1 .
It takes a very long time to write an email, each letter typed, it takes a long time
to appear on the page sometimes it don't appear..
    Please help

    Hi,
This could be also related add-ons.
Add-ons are apps that browsers use to interact with web content like videos and games. Incompatible or out-of-date add-ons might cause Internet Explorer to run slowly, crash, or prevent sites from displaying correctly. You might want to turn off all add-ons,
and then turn them back on only as you need them.
1.Open the desktop, and then tap or click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar.
2.Tap or click the Tools button Tools button, and then tap or click Manage add-ons.
3.Under Show, tap or click All add-ons, and then select the add-on you want to turn off.
4.Tap or click Disable, and then tap or click Close
If issue persists, let’s try to reset Internet Explorer settings.

  • Outlook 2010: Draft emails taking a very long time to appear when moved from user to user

    Hi all,
One of our users (user 1) has full access to another's mailbox (user 2). When user 1 creates a draft email and moves it to user 2's draft box it can take a LONG time to appear.
I understand that a lot of Exchange processes can take up to 24 hours to process - as far as I am aware this is not one of these instances?
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Casio

So it will finally get transferred to the target mailbox. Does it only happen to draft messages? What about other messages?
After moving the message, please check on the OWA (Outlook Web App) and see if the message appears in the target mailbox. Also, please make sure you are on a stable network connection while moving the messages between these two mailboxes.

  • AP Trial Balance - File is massive and takes a long time to open up

    Hello,
We are upgrading from 11.5.10 to 12.1.3 and are running into some serioud problems with the Accounts Payables Trial Balance report in Detail Mode.
    1. The Report takes upwards of 10 minutes to open up - and in many cases does not.
    2. On further research we see that the report output file is > 500MB whereas comparable 11i Trial Balance files are only 19MB.
    3. We tried running in various formats Text, PDF, HTML with no luck.
    4. In fact HTML and Text formats gave “Authentication failed” errors when we tried to open the report.
    My questions are:
    1. Why is there a such a large increase in file size? Is this expected going to R12?
    2. Is there a way to speed up the opening of the large files or create smaller files? - (summary mode, and smaller date ranges are not options as per business needs). Even a 2 month date range give the same problems.
    3. We noticed that the XLA_TRIAL_BALANCES table has 36,521,125 records...LARGE.
    4. We compared the ap_liability_balance records between 11i and R12. We have 29,171,382 in 11i and 37,769,034 in R12. But this is expected as we purge regularly in 11i production and I don't think this difference (about 30%) in the size of the tables should cause such a large difference in the size of the report files (nearly 2000%!!!).
    5. Why are we getting Authentication failed errors? Just for these reports?
Of course we opened an SR, but you know how SRs go :-) and this is a time critical project with our deadlines nearing.
Any help or pointers from the experts here is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Hussein,
Thanks for your prompt reply and my apologies for the substantial delay in mine.
We did some trouble shooting since then.
We repolved the problem by choosing a pdf format instead of the seeded RTF format. This opened up the output in a couple of minutes because the pdf formatted output was about 50mb vs the RTF output which was 300MB+.
But the ORIGINAL problem still remains. The xml tagged .out file is still huge with a size of nearly 1gb!
My earlier questions here now boil down to the following questions.
Q1. Is the huge XML Publisher's .out file expected in R12?  It really is massive!  The text file from 11i was just 19MB
Q2. Oracle does not seem to offer the option to format the output in plain text ...We see PDF, RTF but no plain ugly text.  I would expect plain text file to be much smaller.  How can we get the output in plain text?
1.Yes our stats are upto date. Let me emphasize that we do not have a performance problem with the report itself. The issue we are having is opening up the output.
    2. The authentication error is resolved. It was because of formatting the reports incorrectly.
    3. We did not use the usual tuning procedures such as tkprof because we do not have a performance problem.
    4. We checked the OPP file and there are none. I reiterate, The report does complete without issues. It is just that the output takes a long time to open up in the RTF
I will appreciate if others  can share any experiences if you have faced this situation and how you have handled it.
Thanks in advance for your time!

  • Opening PDF files in Reader itself takes a long time

When I try opening PDF Files in Reader itself, this process takes a long time (more then 2 minutes for opening PDF files).
When I try opening PDF Files directly from My computer, My documents: no problem (direct opening).
Running Reader XI on Windows XP SP3.

    Hi,
According to your description, you want to open pdf file in the Adobe Reader directly from document library.
I suggest you do as the followings:
    1. In SharePoint Central Administration site, click Application Management->Manage Web Applications, select the web application for the site. Click Authentication
Providers, select default zone, and select Yes for "Enable Client Integration?".
    2. click Site Settings-> Site collection features->"Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" click Activate
    3. set the default open behavior for a document library by using the document library settings page.
    4. Enable the “Adobe Arcobat SharePoint OpenDocuments Component”add-on in the IE11.
    5. Add your current site URL to the trusted web sites in IE11.

  • I don't know why it takes too long time to sample flat file.

I don't know why it takes too long time to sample flat file.
    OWB Client 10.1
While importing a flat file of fixed width ,
in the screen "Flat File Sample Wizard" shows the text box number of rows with default value 200.
I want to extend this value to 700,000.
But, it takes too long time (over 5 hours) to sample it.
Do you know why it is happend? or How can i fix this problem?
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    JWS.

    Hello,
Actually flat file sampling process’ goal is to capture the structure of the file. That’s why initially the sample size is set to 200 lines.
The question is why you are trying to perform sampling by 700000 rows? Are you expecting some change in structure beyond this mark?
If so, and you want to capture the fact that your source file is multi – typed, your better prepare small file for sampling outside the OWB.
