Saving CS Illustrator file in script results in much larger file

I would like to use a script that saves a CS Illustrator documents PDF compatible. When I use the script, the created file is much larger (around 3 times) than when I use the Save As dialog box in the Illustrator application with default settings (PDF compatibility and compression turned on).
Dim saveOptions As New Illustrator.IllustratorSaveOptions
saveOptions.Compatibility = aiIllustrator11
saveOptions.PDFCompatible = True
saveOptions.Compressed = True
The script manual setting compressed = true doesn't work. It still
makes a huge file.
I've seen a few other posts here where people have exactly the same problem. Is this a bug in Illustrator DLL?
Please help.

Clearly that's not the entire script since it doesn't run as-is, but that's not the problem.
The code does actually work - at least, assuming your paths are valid it saves the file with the contents you expect. However, your script says:
<pre class=command>set fileSpec to "Photo [Data]:Archive error LOG:" & "test"
save document 1 in fileSpec</pre>
Even though you tell TextEdit to save the file in 'Photo [Data] Archive error LOG:test', TextEdit actually creates a file 'Photo [Data] Archive error LOG:text.rtf'. The filename extension is automatically entered by TextEdit.
Consequently, when you come along later and say:
<pre class=command>open fileSpec</pre>
it's trying to open the filename without the filename extension, and that's where it fails.
Your best solutioni is to use the entire pathname in your variable. That way there's no disconnect when TextEdit adds one that you don't notice:
<pre class=command>set fileSpec to "Photo [Data]:Archive error LOG:" & "test.rtf"</pre>

  • When saving my illustrator file to a pdf it doesnt show all the artwork ie boxes are hidden in the pdf or only showing part of them. How can I fix this?

    when saving my illustrator file to a pdf it doesnt show all the artwork ie boxes are hidden in the pdf or only showing part of them. Even some text is hidden. I have flattened the artwork so everything is in one layer. How can I fix this?

    Hi John
    I have indicated on the attached jpeg where the problem is, basically a line of text is missing at the top and part of the feeding diagram is missing. I created the artwork in different layer and then flattened. All text has been converted to outlines, however the areas being affected have no transparency, I have used solid fills or no fills. I get the same result when I export the file as a jpeg. Hope you can help.

  • Why does saving an Illustrator file as PDF cause the image to be reduced on the PDF document?

    When I save a CS5 drawing as a PDF, the drawing is reduced in size on the resulting PDF page. This was not happening a few days ago, and I do not recall changing any settings. In fact, I have been unable to find any setting that affects this problem. Document set up and Page Set Up both show the CS5 page to 8.5x11, but the file properties in Adobe Reader show the PDF page to be 9x11.5 -  which seems to cause the art to be reduced from its size on the CS5 page.
    Can anyone help?

    You should be able to simply select and delete them, if you can't, they might be on a locked layer, or grouped with other locked objects. You can also create trim marks in the save-as PDF process. If you have already saved your .ai file as a PDF with trim marks, you will need to re-save it as an .ai file in order to save it as an 8.5 x 11 PDF without bleed or crop marks. I should mention it's sometimes problematic to edit a PDF in Illustrator, for that reason I suggest you keep your file in .ai fomat as long as possible. Also, there are times when you do want to have bleed in your file.

  • When saving an Illustrator file on mac, it deletes the file Tags. Why or how to solve it?

    I save an Illustrator file on mac, and when doing so, I create a Tag for it.
    Whenever I make some changes and save the file again, the tag (or tags) disappear. Why?
    Thank you very much,

  • Saving an Illustrator file as a jpg

    I'm trying to save an Illustrator file as a jpg, but when I exported it, the image quality was so horrible. I created an alphabet and there was plenty of space in the margins on the artboard, but in the jpg image, some of the letters are cut off and the quality of the image as a whole is super fuzzy.

    do you really need a jpg? a png would be more suited for text.
    but anyway. what settings are you using in your export?
    i don't know what to say other than maximize your settings. make sure you have enough resolution. do you have "use art boards" selected? what antialiasing setting are you using?
    if you need a preview of what it's going on Save For Web instead so you can play wight he settings till you get what you need.

  • Images Issue when saving an illustrator file as pdf

    Hi,
    I have been suffering these couple of days with the pdfs I save from my illustrator CS5 multi page file. It is a brochure that I designed using many images that I adjusted in Photoshop to CMYK & 300 dpi & embedded in ai. I used some drop shadows for some images & have some transparent vectors & gradient fills in the pages.
    The pdfs I save open very normally on my pc, but the issues appear for the client. He gets some images missing in some pages (the ones that got the gradient transparency). The pages also tend not to load completely & stay blurred. He also got the “drawing error” message.
    I tried to make sure all color modes are the same_ used the US web coated SWOP (default)
    He still gets missing images!
    The same file I sent to a friend of mine, it opened normally! but informed me that Adobe considers the file with “special features”.
    I had to export the pages to jepgs so that he gets to see the design.
    I tried to flatten the gradient transparent vectors but also used the downsampling for the images when saving the pdf & used the “Zip” for compression to reduce the size… what did he get??? no images at all in all the pages.
    I started seeing pdf nighmares last night :S really.
    Please help :’(
    Thanks

    We all have Acrobat Professional reader 7.0.
    I guess he has Windows but tried to open the file from his ipad too.

  • SAVING AN ILLUSTRATOR FILE AS A TIFF IN PHOTOSHOP

    I´m designing  a billboard on illustrator and its  very big, the printing company is asking me to send the file as a TIFF. I did the design on a scale 1-10 because the real size of the billboard is 15mts X 6mts, now I have to convert the artwork into a 7.5mts X 3mts with a 300 resolution and save it as a Tiff. How do I do this in photoshop and how do I save it as a Tiff? what is the aprox. final file size as a Tiff. And one last question, what format should I use to save the file from illustrator. After saving the file do I have to open it or place it.
    Thanks, I really need HELP!!!

    You can save your IA file as a tiff directly from IA using File>Export.

  • Missing images when saving an illustrator file in pdf format

    It just happens with some of my files. Somehow, there are layouts that have the images properly linked, are seen on screen as they have to and so on but when I save them as pdf or try to print them suddenly some of the pictures are missing.
    Does anybody have the same problem? I've tried to solve it saving the document as different formats but the problem persists.
    Thanks a lot!

    We all have Acrobat Professional reader 7.0.
    I guess he has Windows but tried to open the file from his ipad too.

  • Why is my Illustrator file so large, the EPS file is only linked?

    I have an Illustrator CS4 file. I have a 20MB EPS file that I have placed as a link in it. When I go to save it, the Illustrator file becomes 100MB!!
    Why is this happening? Am I not checking the correct settings when saving the Illustrator file?
    Please advise. Thanks!

    As mentioned already, with certain options data will always be embedded. That would especially be true if the linked file is part of a larrger construct with belnding options, clipping masks etc., requiring to produce additional clipping paths and objects when creating PDF data.

  • Can't see pictures when opening other mans Illustrator files

    I'm pretty new at working with Illustrator. And I already stumbled upon some problems. Normally I use google to find the answer, but this time I have no idea how to google for it. So what ist the problem?
    For my work I needed to design an illustration where I also used pictures from my computer. We have a server on which all the computers are connected, however I first saved my Illustrator file on my computer and later exported it to the server. When some else tries to open the file they can't see the pictures I used. So what do I need to do? I the only solution to save the pictures on the servers as well and replace them on the file? Or is there an option to save the pictures within the files.
    Thanks for your time and help! It's much appreciated!

    If people are saving files to a common server it is a good idea to keep images in the same folder as the Illustrator files.
    Also don’t mix Mac and Windows. If you are using Macs for working on, use a Mac server. If Windows, use a Windows server.
    Illustrator doesn’t like saving to remote servers much, but if you follow the above you should avoid problems for the most part.

  • Creating Multi-Page PDF from a Layerd Illustrator file (script)

    Often times when designing a logo I create different versions and variable options on layers. This can result in several layers in one Illustrator file. Is there an easy way or an existing script that will allow me to (with one click) create a multi-page PDF consisting of all the layers within my .ai file? The current method is turning on each layer, performing a save-as (PDF), then turning off said layer and turning on the next layer and repeating the task and so-on-and-so-forth, etc … It becomes tedious and quite often I save over the previous version, forgetting to re-name it or forget to perform a save on a certain layer. Can anyone help with some advice? I have never written my own script before but am not opposed to trying, where do I begin?
    Any help is appreciated.

    You don't say what OS you are using and which scripting language you are thinking of doing this in…
    This is a sample that may get you started done in JavaScript so it's platform independent with the exception of my 'mac style' file paths.
    If your on a PC it may just be a typo to set to C drive or whatever you call them things…
    If you are on the mac OS then it should just dump a load of PDF's on your desktop.
    You say about a multi-page PDF but don't think Illustrator can do this unless its been added with multi-artboards in CS4?
    Others would have to let you know that…
    #target illustrator
    var docRef = app.activeDocument;
    with (docRef) {
    var docName = baseName(name)
    var pdfOptions = new PDFSaveOptions();
    pdfOptions.pDFPreset = '[High Quality Print]';
    // Turn all layers off
    for (var i = 0; i < layers.length; i++) {
    layers[i].visible = false;
    // Turn each layer on
    for (var i = 0; i < layers.length; i++) {
    if (i == 0) {
    layers[i].visible = true;
    redraw();
    var layerName = layers[i].name;
    var saveAsPath = new File('~/Desktop/' + docName + '_' + layerName + '.pdf')
    saveAs(saveAsPath, pdfOptions);
    } else {
    layers[i-1].visible = false;
    layers[i].visible = true;
    redraw();
    var layerName = layers[i].name;
    var saveAsPath = new File('~/Desktop/' + docName + '_' + layerName + '.pdf')
    saveAs(saveAsPath, pdfOptions);
    //close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    function baseName(fileName) {
    var nameString = '';
    var extOffset = fileName.lastIndexOf('.');
    if (extOffset == -1) {
    nameString = fileName;
    } else {
    nameString = fileName.substr(0, extOffset);
    return nameString;

  • How do I edit an illustrator file saved as a jpeg?

    I have an assignment I'm working on, in my color theory class. I saved the file for web, but I didn't save the illustrator file as a copy to edit. Is there a way i can edit the original image, and reopen the layers?

    So you exported the file from the Save for Web dialog and then closed the AI file without saving? If that was the workflow, then there is nothing you can do except recreate the file.

  • Problem with saving an Ai file to PDF in Illustrator CS4 Professional

    Hello guys, I have an interesting problem.  The machine has Windows Vista Enterprise with the latest updates and office 2007 Pro+.  The version of adobe installed is Adobe CS4 Professional, in which has the Illustrator and Acrobat updated to the latest patches.  This has happened to the user over the weekend; all of the sudden when she tries to save an Ai file to PDF, it hangs not even bringing up the dialog box.  However, in all the other Adobe programs are able to save it as a PDF.    Now I am able to print from Illustrator into Acrobat, but it doesn't save it to a full sized "page".  I tried saving any Ai file to a different file and then try to save as a PDF....no dice.   This is the second time around where this has happened.  Now here is the kicker, since I'm an admin it will work like a charm under my login; the user is a restricted user (no admin rights).  I also changed the default printer for her, to a local printer.. (read somewhere about that)  no dice.  Any help would obviously be appreciated.  THX

    Yup, that could also be possible.  Had a similar problem where the IE add-in for Adobe Reader did not work anymore. And I had to get a patch from MS for office.  And it was only available by request only.
