Saving documents in Word

Ever since I started using using Windows 8 & 8.1 I have had the problem that it takes very long time (minutes) to save larger documents in Word.
The documents are in no way complicated, they are just rather large.
If I close the document when the saving process has started it's saved rather fast (a few seconds).
Seems to me to a bug.

Hi,
Please try the following steps and check if it makes any difference:
1. Start Word.
2. Click File > Options > Advanced.
3. Scroll to the Save heading, untick the check box before "Allow Background saves".
4. Click OK and test the issue again.

  • Saved document to Word and reopened it in a strange text!

Does anyone know how to get a document a saved in word...which the next time I opened it came up as random shapes and such...back to normal??
I swear I have tried everything.
I never saved it on to anything but the hard drive of the same specific computer.
    Thanks,
    Kayti

Most of the time, you can find a way to bring the document closer to its original form - but sometimes the saved document is permanently altered. Your easiest option would, of course, to use Time Machine, but it doesn't sound like you have a second drive. In Leopard, with an attached drive, you can bring back any number of versions of old or deleted documents. It sounds like you already know this.
Sometimes, it's best to find a way to bring the document as close to its original form as possible, and edit it into shape.
I've had excellent luck with Text Wrangler 2.2.1, available as a free download. View the document as Soft Text, and you should find the virgin text (in between the formatting, which you'll have to delete).

  • Saving documents as Word format

I save most of my work in Pages as Word documents so I can open and edit them on my Android phone as well. The only problem I have is that when I save an existing document, it does not automatically go back to the directory from which I opened it. A document saved in the default Pages format does this, so obviously the problem is Pages "remembering" the directory. I can manually find the right directory and all works OK, but is there any way you know of to make Pages remember automatically where the document was originally stored?
On a related note, the "last documents" option doesn't find Word documents either. Wonder if there is a way to get it to locate those as well?
    Thanks much!

That is a changed and inconsistent behavior. The expected behavior as Charles points out is that Finder notes the origin and sticks there.
It used to do the expected back at Tiger and has drifted off course ever since. In Preview it has at various times opened .eps files, converted them to .pdf, stripped off their name changing it to 'Untitled' and then dumped them in the Documents folder. You have the unending joy of going through your Documents folder trying to sort out the origins and names of all the "Untitled" pdfs.

Think they need to change that to the past tense.

  • When saving documents from word 2013, the save as dialog shows the default path under "other web locations"

it used to be in the gold ole days of sharepoint 2010 and office 2010 that when I created a document in sharepoint and saved it I would get a dialog, like this (see below)  I have also attached a screen shot of the 2013 save dialog (when you save
a document for the first time).
I find it strange that the user actually has to select their "Current Folder" and also that it shows in the dialog as "other web locations"  Why can't it be like in the 2010 days where it automically selects the correct location
and the user just hits save.  And why does the sharepoint location show up as an "other web location".  Is there anything that can be done (through office registry settings or another way) to make this less confusing for our users???
now when I do this in office 2013 I get a dialog like this:
    krd

    Hi kdube,
I test in SharePoint 2013 again, When I created a new document library and created a first document and clicked save as, I got a same dialog with you that "Current Folder" was under  "other web locations".
But when I created a second document and from then on, when I clicked save as, I got a same dialog with myself that "Current Folder" was under "SharePoint".
As I have said, Actually, web locations contain Microsoft SkyDrive and SharePoint libraries. Even the default path under "other web locations", it will not affect the Save As function.

  • When upgrading to OSX Yosemite do all my programs and files transfer over such as Office for mac, saved documents from word, excel, pics, pdf files,etc.etc...

Will all my files transfer over (or stay) automatically right after upgrading to Yosemite or do I have to backup every single desired program or document? Question is do I HAVE to please if you can answer if its mandatory or not. Not looking for recommendations that I SHOULD back up or anything like that just want to know if it is mandatory to perform a backup to be able to keep or transfer all my current programs and apps and documents currently on my MB Pro Retina.

Yes, upgrading to Yosemite will not touch your 3rd party apps or files in the Home folder.
Although not mandatory you should have a a backup of your hard drive regardless if you upgrade to Yosemite or not.  To not have a backup is just playing  Russian roulette as there are only two types of hard drives;  those that have failed and those that will.

  • Trouble opening documents in word that were created in pages (even though i saved as word doc)

I know how to save documents in pages to word format, I've seen the tutorials and read things over and over again about this. However, I am creating some documents in pages, saving them as word docs, emailing them to other people who are opening up on PC with word, but the formatting and the paragraphs are all messed up. I really need help so I can get my work done and my documents I create at home in pages will open up correctly in word by others.
    Thanks.

    So, an update of sorts.
Turns out it's not a total hang—if I leave the ball spinning (for 30+ minutes), the open dialogue finally pops up... but it's in an empty home folder.
We seem to have some sort of corruption of the home folder file hierarchy (there's an odd folder called "99" that appeared on the root of the server's main drive—I can't get access to it, and I don't want to monkey with the permissions until I can figure out what it is) that dates from the same time that our problem popped up. The only thing that I can think of that I changed at around that time was to add a new group home folder. Might I have mucked up the file system? (Shouldn't be that easy, should it? But hey, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!)
Any thoughts or suggestions? Could the problems (the phantom folder and the spinning ball of almost-doom) be related? Or am I simply dealing with a pair of peculiarities that are unrelated, or that are both symptoms of yet another problem, rather than cause and effect?
Thanks to everyone who's chimed in so far for you input!
    But, to reiterate, help!

Not sure if any of the alternatives to Office (word) for Mac are near the feature set you require.
There are a few listed here at this page, in some ways aren't exactly like Office or Word; the feature you seek may (or may not) exist. I'd try & see about neooffice compatibility...

hello i am using ms word when i open my saved documents but cannot edit anythings and all are option is hide .....so how to edit

    Hi,
In regarding of the issue, I need more information:
Which Office and operation system do you use?
Does the other Office suits encounter the issue?
Does the issue occur in some special documents or every documents (even a new blank Word document)?
Do you get some error message? Please upload some images about it if you can.
Let's try some methods, check if they are helpful:
    a) Delete the Word Data registry subkey.
    1.Exit all Office programs.
2.In Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.) Type regedit in the search box, tap
or click Apps, and then tap or click Run.
Or, in Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running:
    Word 2013
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Data
    Word 2010
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Data
    Word 2007
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
    Word 2003
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Data
4.Click Data, and then click Export on the File menu.
5.Name the file Wddata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop.
6.On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
    7.Exit Registry Editor.
    8.Start Word.
    b) Start Word in
safe mode, if it works fine, the issue may be caused by the add-ins, please try to check them one by one.
    c) Repair Office.

  • Saving a document using Word 2010 into a managed metadat hierarchy

    Hi
Can I save a document using Word 2010 into a document library that has a managed metadata hierarchy and the document appear in the correct place in the hierarchy ?
Ideally it would be good if the Word 2010 "Save As" browser would show the managed metadata hierarchy, the user would select a node on the managed metadata hierarchy and the document would be save with the appropriate metadata to place the document
in the correct place in the hierarchy.
    Thanks

    Nigel Price NJPEnterprises

    Hi Nigel,
I think it's normal difference between "Open" and "Save As" option in MS Office application by design.
Whenever we create the document from/out of SharePoint library, and click "Save As" and there is always no "Arrange by" part in dialog.
When we open Office Word application, and open a library location from SharePoint site, if we disabled the option "Configure Navigation Hierarchies" for that particular library, there will be no "Arrange by" part in "Open"
    dialog(e.g. image below).
It seems SharePoint doesn't provide the function for "Save As" the same as "Open" with different disign requirements, if we want to save document to the needed location in that library through "Save As" dialog, we
can add the proper metadata column value (e.g. manged metadata column if there is) in "Document Information Panel", and/or navigate to the proper library folder location.
    Thanks

  • When I open a saved document in pages, then close it right away without making any changes, why does it ask if I would like to save the page or all new info will be lost?

I have a few saved documents and when I open them to view them quick, sometimes when I close it, I will get asked if I would like to save the document or all my new info will be lost. I didnt change anything so Im not sure why it asks me that. When I open the document again, all the info is there and nothing is different. Thanks

Unless they were Word documents, Pages has done nothing really, but it is updating date information in the file.
It is annoying but just ignore it and don't save.

  • Open Office saving documents to Pages

Open Office saving my documents (saved as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP) in the program Pages. Meaning, documents with .doc are being saved to Pages instead of Open Office, so when I go to open the document, it opens in Pages instead of Open Office.

The problem isn't that they are being saved to Pages. The problem is that Pages is set as the default program to open them. You can change that by doing the following:
    1. In Finder, find and select (highlight) a .doc file.
    2. Click the "Action" button in the bar at the top of the Finder window and then click "Get Info"
    3. The Info window has a section titled "Open with" -- change it to Open Office and then click Change all.

I teach Continuing education classes to Real Estate agents and I need to issue them certificates at the class, whihc need to be signed by me and it needs to contain their info on the certificate. The certificate is currently saved in a word format. What i'm trying to accomplish is to do a "mail merge " ( as some classes i have as many as 150 attendees) for the document, digitally sign each one with my signature on the certificate and then e-mail it out to the respective attendees. can this be done? if so How?

This is the step that I took after inputting my signature.
On the right, after saving my document, I click "Get Others to Sign."  I was confused because it says that it's powered by EchoSign.  Like I stated before, my clients are able to sign this document when I send it to them, but it is returned to me with their signature (not in the signature field, but at the end of the document), and my signature is missing.  I tested this on myself - my signature is missing when they receive it.
