Scatter Plot Axis Choice

Hi folks. Just wanting to make a scatter chart, but she doesn't seem to want to give me what I want.
Oh my table, first row has a header, then 4 items. Fourth row has the same:
Listings | 50 | 60 | 70 | 80
EPL | 900 | 600 | 450 | 200
How do I turn this into a scatter, with Listings on X? I chose that first, then Command to choose the 900, then shift to 200. But, that's plotting these quite strangely. Doesn't seem to work. Can anybody get this to work? I'm looking for a trend in order to get an estimate of a fixed point.

Unfortunately it seems that while most chart types can cope with data in rows, 'scatter' needs data to be in columns. If you create a table the transpose of how you described it, then click Listings and command-click 200, you should be able to create the correct scatter chart. Note that you'll probably then want to click the numbers on the x-axis of the chart (e.g. 80) until a narrow box appears which contains just those numbers. Then, in the chart inspector 'Axis' dialogue enter the value 50 in 'Value Axis Format':'Minimum', and maybe chnge the number of steps to suit (here 3). You might want to repeat this for the y-axis with different values.

I'm trying to create a graph to show the percentage of revenue that is generated by some percentage of classes offered, a la an 80-20 graph. Sample XML:

Ideally, I want a line graph (which I can make without any trouble) with PERCENT_OF_CLASSES showing up on the X-axis and PERCENTAGE on the Y-axis. My problem is that, because it's a line graph, BI Beans treats the X-axis as ordinal rather than a data axis, so the axis labels are completely haywire. I would like a way to change the line graph so that the axis labels are the same as the Y-axis, preferably every 10% or 20%. Skipping doesn't work, because the total number of classes can vary so the exact percentages can vary as well.
If there is no way to do that, I could try to make it as a scatter plot; however, it's not built into the wizard and I've had little success trying to build it by hand. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Axis scale for scatter plots

I'm trying to create a specialized scatter plot, which functions similar to Excel's scatter plot. I'm having problems determining what the min and max values should be for the axes. I would like the program to determine from the input data what the initial min and max values should be on the x- and y-axis, the user can adjust later.
So, I don't want the program to just look at the maximum value imported and round up. For instance, data = {523.7, 514.4, 271.8, 128.5}. The max value is 523.7, round up to 524. Instead, I would like to program to make 600 the largest value on the axis, because that makes it nice round number for the user to view the dataset.
Then, I thought it really depends on the range of the data. For instance, data = {523.4, 523.8, 523.2, 522.8, 523.9}. Here, the range is very small, so it doesn't make sense to have 600 the largest value on the scale. The largest value should be 524 or 525, and the small value on the axis scale should be 521 or 522.
Has anyone else ever worked with this problem, or have a good solution? I would really appreciate it, I've spend way too many days working on this.

This is off the top of my head and based on a slight variation of your data.
data: 52.34, 52.38, 52.32, 52.28, 52.39
min=52.28 max=52.39 range=0.11
Looking at the range we see it is "on the order of" 0.1. Ie, it is closer to the next lower power of 10 (0.1) than it is to the next higher one (1.0). So we round min down to the next lowest multiple of 0.1 (52.2) and round max up (52.4). 52.2 and 52.4 can serve as the nice numbers.
The range is just a little bigger than a power of 10, so it might be a good idea to check what happens when it's a little less.
data: 135 226 141 143 etc
min=135 max=226 range=91
range is on the order of 100, and the nice numbers are 100 and 300.
As a variation on this strategy if we always find the power of 10 below the range (10 in the second example) we get a tighter fit but the numbers are slightly less nice - 130 and 220.
(I'm pretty sure I've seen - and used! - some java software from the Internet somewhere to find the best scale for axes, so it might pay to look around)
Had to edit my second example and, while I was waiting, found what I have used for this sort of thing: http://geosoft.no/software/index.html (The NiceNumbers class - it finds numbers along a range suitable for major and minor "ticks" but, if memory serves me correctly it extends the range so that the ends are nice too.)

Xy scatter plot with 2 y axis how to?

I am interested in an making an XY scatter plot with time points as
the x axis, and with 2 different y axis.
As I mentioned, the x axis
will have the different time in min., that the data was collected, and
the 1 y axis would contain a particular measurement of the sample, and
the other (2nd) y axis would contain a different type of measurement
of the same sample. The problem is that I can't see how to do a 2 y
axis XY scatter plot.

Scatter plot with dates

The one reason i use scatter plots is to make the X axis my dates. so i see the duration between data points as real distance horizontally. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this on the ipad. It seems to not have a way of tweaking the data source so that I can tell it that column B (dates) is my x axis, and column C (lets say remaining data MB's, lets use something everyone on a 250 plan can associate with) is my actual data point to plot.
Anyone figure out this one yet?

ok, i was able to 'kinda' get it to work (not the labelling, but the scatter plot). It seems you have to select the date column first when selecting data, then drag over to the columns of plotted data and it -might- recognize the dates as the x axis. it took me a good 5 minutes playing to get it to go right.
I also had to check the "Share X values" option under the gear button.
as for the labels, it has a "Number format" and a "Same as source", but if you select same as source, it doesn't give you any choices but plain number for formatting. Same as source doesn't work at all right now for dates.
We both need to submit tickets with apple.com\feedback to let them know. I noticed other little fixes that were not documented in the 1.1 update that people had been submitting tickets on the past few weeks.

Why won't my data appear on my scatter plot graph in numbers?

I'm making a scatter plot graph and I'm dealing with very small numbers on my x-axis, such as 0.0004 and 0.184 on my y-axis. Every time I plot the scatter plot graph, nothing appears on the graph. Can anyone please help me? Thanks.

just to check in your notification centre,(settings>Notification centre>Messages) did you enable show alerts from everyone? if so
Do a reset by holding the power and home button until the apple logo appears ignoring the slide to power off (no data loss).

Highlighting a single data point in a scatter plot - Numbers'09

Is there a way to highlight a single data point on a scatter plot in Numbers'09 (or point to it using a line from each respective coordinate on the x & y axis).
I don't think it matters but the data point i am looking to highlight is the [highest y value/2]... and of course its respective x coordinate once you plug the y value into the equation ( y = f(x) ) and solve for x.

Here is my own tip :
As you see, I use two sets of values.
In the second one I define only the yValue of the data point which must be "highlighted".

Swap X and Y in a Scatter Plot

Seems like this should have a simple answer. I have a table of data, and I'd like to generate a scatter plot of two columns. The plot comes out fine, but I want to "swap" the X and Y axis in the resulting chart.
Is there a simple way to do this? I can't find anything in the chart popup-menu, the inspector, or the application menus.

This is a user to user forum, and I'll admit that I don't have a great grip on Numbers Charts, so I may be missing something myself. However, I don't know of an easy way to swap the axes either. What I would do is to create an auxiliary column that repeats the X data in a column just to the right of the Y data. Then I would create a new chart that plots the second and third columns, effectively reversing the axes. The third column can be hidden. Of course you could also just reverse your x and y columns before plotting, but that might be more disruptive to your overall table organization.

I believe that, after some experimentation, I have a better method for you. Highlight the X Range only and create a Scatter Chart. The Chart will be blank since you have not yet supplied a Y range. Then highlight your Y range and drag it to the blank chart. A new Y series will be inserted.

Plotting Data Incorrectly in a Scatter Plot

I am trying to plot a graph using a scatter plot in Numbers, and all of the data points are correct except for one. If you look at the data, you can see that the point that is at .00360 on the y axis(the highest point on the graph) is supposed to have an x value of .001 but instead it is too far to the right (closer to .1). This is throwing off my graph and I really need to get this fixed. Below are the links to the data table and the graph. Thanks for any help!

I tried recreating your table and chart, typing in the numbers rather than having any of them calculated, and manually assigning min and max values to both axes to match yours.
The chart came out with all data points where expected.
I did notice another difference in the curve though—where yours shows three data points forming a concave-toward-the-origin section (at the leftmost portion that is correctly plotted), mine shows four data points. That led me to count the points and find that there is one point—(0.139,0.00309)—missing from your chart.
While I don't see from doing this what may be wrong with your chart, it did bring a workaround to mind that should get you a useable chart before your deadline.
Insert a new (plain) table into your document and resize it to the minimum needed to hold the two columns of data.
Select the cells containing the X axis data and Copy.
Click on cell A1 of the new table and go Edit > Paste Values.
Repeat for the Y axis data, placing it in column B of the new table.
Select the data block in the new table then insert a scatter chart.
If you still get the error, manually edit the data in the cells causing the error.
That should get you through the short term. I think someone may have to look at the actual file to solve the underlying problem.

I display labels but I need to modify them to display C, near the point. Is it possible ?

Scatter plot line width

First off, I'm using the trial version of iWork '09. So I want to eventually put a chart into keynote to present to my colleagues, however, putting the chart up on a projector requires me to have a thicker plot line. So if I use a scatter plot, my axis' turn out great, but I cannot adjust the line's width. I don't want symbols, I just want a line connecting the points. If I use the line chart instead of the scatter, the x-axis displays "Untitled 1, Untitled 2" as the labels. I can't change them to the corresponding numbers which is annoying. I can change everything else fine: axis line width, font size, etc. Its just eh connecting line I'm having trouble with

Actually, found a roundabout way to do this. Have to use line chart and in the x-axis label, you have to insert your formula for what cells you want such as Table 1 :: B212:B912 and just set the category counter to only include one label every so many counts. Kind of a pain, but works. However, can't have only the few tickmarks (should be 5 labels and corresponding 5 tickmarks in my case, but I have 5 labels and 700 tickmarks), all are shown instead. It tacks all of the labels individually, but you can choose which ones are shown, but cannot remove tickmarks... Any ideas?

Scatter Plot With Multiple Data Series

Hello,
I would greatly appreciate any help you guys could give me.
I need one scatter plot that shows 4 different groups of data. They all go with the same X and Y axis values, though.
I can get a scatter graph with ONE group, but it won't let me add in another one. I tried the clicking and dragging the new cells, and the shift clicking, but the data just will not go into the chart. It's like it doesn't recognize it.
I think I read something about sharing the X values? But I don't know how to do that?

Pop,
Badunit's example is one possible arrangement that you might have described; that is, one column for X values and several columns for Y values. This is the case when you should respond that you are sharing X-values. With all the data in one table, you can select it all at once, so you don't have the problem with dragging additional series into the chart.
The Numbers User Guide PDF's first chapter is the place to start getting your bearings - you will learn how to distinguish Header vs. Body rows and columns. It's worth the effort to take another look at it.
Since you are using a Scatter Chart, it's important not to use a header column for X because X values must be Numeric, as opposed to Text.

Scatter Plot Problems

I'm fairly new to Numbers, and I'm having difficulty making scatter plots with some of my data. For instance, I want to create a graph of strain versus force, with force on the x-axis and strain on the y-axis. I have my data in 2 rows, and when I select both rows and choose a scatter plot, I get a bizarre looking chart. Is there a step I'm missing here?

I should have given you more data. I have found that the icon in the upper left corner of the Scatter Chart's data range in the Table can not be switched from columnar to row-wise, as would be the case for a Line Chart. It seems that the icon, and the chart behavior, are stuck on Columnar.
Clicking on the icon will not change it.
Defining a row-wise paring range for a Scatter Chart is ignored and a multi-series Columnar Chart is created instead. There are two ways to identify the behavior, by the color blocks in the data range, as you noted, and by the icon.

Clicking on the icon should toggle it.
The documentation indicates that either arrangement should work with a Scatter Chart, but clearly in my experience, only column pairs can be used. I can't think of a good reason to restrict this behavior beyond the convention that X-Y data is normally presented in columns.

Scatter plot graphs, more than 2 series possible?

It's been very difficult for me to put 3 or 4 series of data in scatter graphs and connect the dots with lines as in Excel, it just doesn't allow me. I made a graph before using line graph model but it turns out that in the x axis (which in this case is time in weeks) I need to show the distance proportionally (i.e. 0,2,6,12 and 16 weeks) and I can't find how to do it with a simple line graph. Tried in excel and is easy using the scatter plot graph (very simple, using exactly the same data arrangement). But numbers does not accept the series of data (it only accepts X,Y per series) and in second place there is not lines connecting the dots. Any of you guys have a suggestion?. I'd really prefer to use numbers bit do not why is so difficult to scatter graph the data. Thanks

The default for X-Y pairs can actually be pretty handy, though often it is not. You can easily turn it into one X and a bunch of Y's. Connecting lines are also available.
My assumption from your post is you have a column of X values and several columns of Y values.
1) All data for a scatter plot must be in "normal" data cells, none in header cells.
2) Select all the X & Y data and create a scatter chart.
3) There is a "gear" at the top left of the colored box in the table that indicates the data in the chart. Click it and choose to share X values. Now you should have one column labeled "X" and several labeled "Y" and your chart will show each Y as a separate series.
4) With the chart selected (the whole chart, not one of the series), go to the Chart tab of the inspector, go to the series tab, look for the words "connect points" and choose what kind of line you want to connect the points. Alternatively or additionally, you could make trendline curves by clicking on "advanced". Also, you can do them one at a time and choose different settings for each series by selecting each series separately.
If you have gaps in your Y data, it will not connect the points on either side of the gap, you will have a missing line segment.
If your X data is unsorted, some connecting lines may go right-to-left, not left-to-right.

Scatter plot with categories

I'm wondering if there is any way to make a histogram scatter plot like this one in Numbers:

At the moment I have a bunch of values in three columns. This seems like it should be super straightforward to do but I can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe histogram isn't the right word. Dot plot, maybe? Kaleidograph does this very easily but the aesthetics aren't what I'd like them to be. Here's their example:

It's the "dot plot" under the "stat" category.
The best I've been able to do is sort the values in each category in ascending order and then plot them along the same X axis, so you get a sense of the difference in the distributions:

This is less than ideal because I don't have the same number of values in each category, so I have to insert empty cells in order to get a comparable 'run' (so to speak).
It just seems like it would be trivially simple to make this sort of plot, but there doesn't seem to be an option for it.
