ScheduledExecutorService

please consider this code sample
service = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(1);
          final ScheduledFuture<?> timeHandle = service.scheduleWithFixedDelay(new DownloadService(), 0, 10,
                    TimeUnit.SECONDS);
          service.schedule(new Runnable() {
               public void run() {
                    timeHandle.cancel(true);
          }, 365 , TimeUnit.DAYS);     Here I Start the process and this service variable is a global variable and when i want to stop service then i use shutdown method for stop this process
But it does not stop that process properly.can you give me a sample code for stopping that process.
i used This code.
service.shutDown();
What is the problem with this code.

It sounds like you may be confusing fixed rate with fixed delay, and/or not accounting for the slop in System.currentTimeMillis.
                 Time
          1         2         3         4         5

|-- E0 --|  |- E1 -|  |E2|  |----E3---|  |- E4 -|The first line of executions is fixedRate = 10, so 10 millis from the start of one to the start of the next.
The second line is fixeDelay = 2, so 2 millis from the end of one to the start of the next.

  • Advantages and disadvantages among Timer, ScheduledExecutorService, Thread

    Hi, what are the exact advantages and disadvantages among using Timer, using ScheduledExecutorService and just using Thread (Thread.sleep(...))?
    For the simple task which needs to poll some values by some interval (the interval is not supposed very accurate, maybe about 5 seconds just ok), is it ok for just using Thread, like:
    run() {
      while(isRunning) {
         Thread.sleep(5000);
         //do something
    }?

    jiangyc wrote:
    Why using Timer and TimerTask is simpler and better than using Thread directly? Because it handles the rote stuff that's not directly part of your application. Ideally, your code should just be the marginal stuff that's specific to your app; anything else should be in the library you use. The less code the better.
    I feel just using Thread doesn't make my code hard to maintain and by far I don't find any performance issue raised by using Thread (in our swing application, there are maybe less than 10 Thread objects which take care of the different polling tasks). It's not a performance issue; it's a code management issue. (Although the chances are good that Timer will have been well-tuned.) The less code you have, the less code you have to wade through to fix bugs, make changes, etc. This might not seem like much when it's a small program, but it adds up. In a business environment where you have huge codebases worked on by dozens of people (many of whom don't work there anymore) it becomes really important to only write what you have to and no more. Maybe if you're doing a small project it's not important, but keeping your code clean a good habit to get into.
    And I wonder the base implementation of Timer and TimerTask is not using Thread?Of course it is. That's not the point. The point is that it keeps your code cleaner.
    When you use Thread directly, probably the only part that's directly relevant to your program (as opposed to any other program that uses Thread) is the value you're sticking in Thread.sleep() -- the delay. You specify that in the schedule() call to the Timer.
    If you keep your use of Thread minimal, then it might not be much bigger than using Timer/TimerTask, but the latter does more, including stuff you'll probably need to add (like ways to cancel the task).
    Also, when you do this using Thread, you're exposing the implementation, but when you use Timer.schedule, you're exposing the intent. The latter makes for clearer code.

  • ScheduledExecutorService and Application Module

    I have an Long running job which is submitted from UI, so I used ScheduledExecutorService to execute the task by passing the reference of Application Module. Now the Thread makes some database commits new rows. I have RichPoll which will keep pooling for the progress.
    As Soon as the data is inserted I call transaction commit.
    Now What i noticed is the data committed in the Run method is not available in DB until the run method completes , Any idea what's going wrong
    public class MyClass implements Runnable {
    private MyAMImpl aM;
    public String doAction() {
    FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    Application app = fc.getApplication();
    ExpressionFactory elFactory = app.getExpressionFactory();
    ELContext elContext = fc.getELContext();
    ValueExpression valueExp =
    elFactory.createValueExpression(elContext, "#{data.MyAMDataControl.dataProvider}",
    Object.class);
    aM = (MyAMImpl )valueExp.getValue(elContext);
    ScheduledExecutorService ses = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(1);
    setService(ses);
    ses.schedule(this, 3, TimeUnit.SECONDS);
    public void run() {
    try {
    String bug = this.bug;
    am.executeTask();
    } catch (Exception e) {
    e.toString();
    }

    Hi,
    how should we know if the work is done in the part that you don't share? Have you debugged it to ensure the commit happens ?

    Post your code using code tags next time, it will be easier to read.
    This post doesn't help much but I just wanted to point out that the 2 second delay in the main thread is working correctly, but the time remaining is reported improperly there as well (just to draw attention to it):
    Task remaining: *9001* Time: Tue Apr 28 12:07:*03* EDT 2009
    Task remaining: *7959* Time: Tue Apr 28 12:07:*05* EDT 2009
    In the 'Task remaining' section, just about 1 second was counted down, while the time report shows 2 seconds passing. This could be a simple rounding issue if it happened here or there, but it is consistent - for two seconds waited by the main thread, the ScheduledFuture thinks it has waited only one. This kinda rules out 1) busy thread pool preventing the task from executing when triggered 2) Heavy duty GC activity preventing thread execution at the proper time.

  • What does scheduledExecutorService.scheduleAtFixedRate() internally do?

    Hi there!
    Because I'm executing a time critical task every second, I compared several methods to find the best way to ensure that the task is really executed in fixed time steps. After calculation the standard derivation of the error, which is defined as [(expectedEndtime - startTime) - (realEndtime - startTime)], it seems like using the method scheduledExecutorService.scheduleAtFixedRate() leads to the best results, but I don't have a clue why it is so. Reading the javadoc doesn't helped much.
    Does anybody know how that method internally works? How does it ensure that the referenced task is really executed in fixed time steps?

    The source is available in src.zip, which comes with your JDK download.
    Also, do you understand the difference between fixed rate execution and fixed delay execution?

  • How to implemented an scheduled service using ScheduledExecutorService

    Hi, everybody
    I have a case that need retrieve data periodically from server. And I used the ScheduledExecutorService and javafx.concurrent.Service to implemented this case. But the trick thing is that ScheduledExecutorService schedule method aleady need a Runnable parameter. And Service setExecutor method set the ScheduledExecutorService. But the result is the Runnable is implemented run periodically but not the Service's call method(Which is I want). The Service is not extends from Runnable or Callable, how it can be used by the ScheduledExecutorService to implemented the periodical task?
    Please see my example:
    public class ScheduledService extends Application{
         * @param args
         *            the command line arguments
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            launch(args);
        @Override
        public void start(Stage primaryStage) throws Exception {
            primaryStage.setTitle("Test");
            Parent root = new Label("abc");
            Scene scene = new Scene(root, 800, 600);
            primaryStage.setScene(scene);
            primaryStage.show();
            test();
        public static void test() {
            ScheduledExecutorService scheduledExecutorService = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(1);
            scheduledExecutorService.scheduleAtFixedRate(new Runnable() {
                @Override
                public void run() {
                    System.out.println("ScheduledServiceTest.main(...).new Runnable() {...}.run()");
            }, 0, 2, TimeUnit.SECONDS);
            CustomService service = new CustomService();
            service.setExecutor(scheduledExecutorService);
            service.start();
    class CustomService extends Service<Void> {
        @Override
        protected Task<Void> createTask() {
            return new Task<Void>() {
                @Override
                protected Void call() throws Exception {
                    System.out.println("CustomService.createTask().new Task() {...}.call()");
                    return null;
    }The result is:
    ScheduledServiceTest.main(...).new Runnable() {...}.run()
    CustomService.createTask().new Task() {...}.call()
    ScheduledServiceTest.main(...).new Runnable() {...}.run()
    ScheduledServiceTest.main(...).new Runnable() {...}.run()
    ScheduledServiceTest.main(...).new Runnable() {...}.run()
    ScheduledServiceTest.main(...).new Runnable() {...}.run()
    ScheduledServiceTest.main(...).new Runnable() {...}.run()
    {code}

    You are not allowed to call "restart" on a different thread, it must be from the JavaFX application thread. You don't see the Exception for it because it is encapsulated in the ScheduledFuture that "executor.scheduleWithFixedDelay" returns.
    Let's forget about this ScheduledExecutorService, that is not the way to do it when you want to work with a Service. Here's a fully working example that uses standard JavaFX:
    package hs.mediasystem;
    import javafx.animation.Animation;
    import javafx.animation.KeyFrame;
    import javafx.animation.Timeline;
    import javafx.application.Application;
    import javafx.concurrent.Service;
    import javafx.concurrent.Task;
    import javafx.event.ActionEvent;
    import javafx.event.EventHandler;
    import javafx.stage.Stage;
    import javafx.util.Duration;
    public class Test extends Application {
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        launch(args);
      public static class MyService extends Service<Void> {
        @Override
        protected Task<Void> createTask() {
          return new Task<Void>() {
            @Override
            protected Void call() throws Exception {
              System.out.println("Begin task");
              return null;
      @Override
      public void start(Stage paramStage) throws Exception {
        final MyService myService = new MyService();
        Timeline timeline = new Timeline(new KeyFrame(Duration.seconds(5), new EventHandler<ActionEvent>() {
          @Override
          public void handle(ActionEvent event) {
            myService.restart();   // automatically on JavaFX thread, so can call restart directly
        timeline.setCycleCount(Animation.INDEFINITE);
        timeline.playFrom("end"); // can also play from start but you will have an initial 5 second delay
    }

    In my task, i have a line of System.out.println("Timer running").
    After running the apps for sometimes, the printout will halt but the apps is still running as per normal, and the task is also running.....
    How do i ensure that the System.out.println("Timer running") will always appear ?

  • ScheduledExecutorService.scheduleAtFixedRate executes more than it shouldI

    Hi,
    I have the following problem, that I hope you can help me resolve (or investigate):
    ScheduledExecutorService scheduledExecutorService= Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(4, new NamedThreadFactory("MyWorker-"));
    scheduledExecutorService.scheduleAtFixedRate(new FinalJobsCleanerTask(),0,1,TimeUnit.HOURS);That code should implement a schedule that wakes every hour and runs the given task.
    For some reason, I see from time to time, that it wakes up more that it should- looking at the log, I see that one time the same Thread ('MyWorker-1' for example) executed the task for about 10 time at the same second (with some ms difference between each execution). I know for sure that the FinalJobsCleanerTask() is not invoked by any other executor, so obviously it is something wrong with the way I use the ScheduledExecutorService.
    Do you have any idea what may cause this problem? Any clue will be appriciated :-)

    If that doesnt work then something in your code is causing it to loop more than once, or the system clock is changing.

  • How to run multiple Thread using Scheduler's in 1.5

    Hi,
    I have a scenario, in which I have to run a Thread at every 15 minutes, If the first Thread is not Finished in 15 min then new Thread has to start.
    Currently I implemeted with java 1.5 schedulers, but the problem is if my first Thread is taking more than 15 min, then no new Thread is starting.
    Following is my Code:
    TestAccountingThread accountingThread = new TestAccountingThread();
    ScheduledExecutorService scheduler = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(10);
    scheduler.scheduleAtFixedRate( accountingThread, 0, 60, SECONDS );
    Can any one help on this, This is really urgent.
    Regards,
    Suman

    if my first Thread is taking more than 15 min, then no new Thread is startingIf it takes more than 15 min, manually run a new scheduler with initial-delay=0 and shutdown the current one when the current execution is finished --- and repeat this logic in a conditional loop.
    Could this be what you want?

  • Multi user catalog and how to make it - use a checked out system

    Lots of people want or need a Multi user ability in lightroom here is one way to achieve multi-user catalogs by using a check-in check-out system.
    The Catalog would open normally upon a second user opening LR would then ask to switch to multi-user mode.
    Once in multi user mode lightroom would lock-out images, collections, or folders by a checked-out for editing system.
    By checking-out images, collections, or folders: files would be unavailable to other users until edits are saved, and the images, collections, or folders are checked-in.
    This check-in check-out system would need a global check-in feature in case someone forgot to check in an image, collection, or folders (global check-in could be admin level). Word documents, CAD files, etc, use a similar lock-out/read only system for the files. Since, we wouldn't want to bloat the files with programing to lock out the files, this would have to be added to the catalog and managed by the catalog.

    Your thread pool is a pool and probably keeps
    the thread alive even though the thread has nothing
    after a minute toi execute - you'll have to call its
    shutdown() methodThanks Oxe...
    I googled that (easy when you know what the answer is) and yes the ScheduledThreadPool retains threads for re-use, so you have to check that all threads are done and then shutdown() the scheduler... like this:     while (!future.isDone()) {
              try { Thread.sleep(10); } catch(InterruptedException e) {}
         scheduler.shutdown();
    ... here is the complete working class:
    import java.util.concurrent.ScheduledExecutorService;
    import java.util.concurrent.Executors;
    import java.util.concurrent.ScheduledFuture;
    import static java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit.*;
    import java.awt.Toolkit;
    class BeeperControl {
         private final ScheduledExecutorService scheduler = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(1);
         public void beepForAMinute() {
              final Toolkit tk = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
              final Runnable beeper = new Runnable() {
                   public void run() {
                        tk.beep();
                        System.out.println("beep");
              final ScheduledFuture<?> future = scheduler.scheduleAtFixedRate(beeper, 250, 250, MILLISECONDS);
              scheduler.schedule(
                   new Runnable() {
                        public void run(){
                             future.cancel(true);
                   }, 3, SECONDS
              while (!future.isDone()) {
                   try { Thread.sleep(10); } catch(InterruptedException e) {}
              scheduler.shutdown();
         public static void main(String[] args)
              BeeperControl bc = new BeeperControl();
              bc.beepForAMinute();
    }Thanx again. Keith.

  • Finish painting before Robot captures screen

    Hi. I have a little math practice program on a JFrame. When a child gets a problem right, I use Robot to capture a screen shot and then use that image on a new JFrame as a backdrop for crazy effects.
    My problem is that I want all swing painting on the original JFrame to finish prior to the Robot screen capture. In particular, the button the child clicks to submit an answer should no longer look 'depressed.' Unfortunately, the Robot screen capture catches the screen before the original JFrame is fully updated/repainted. This occurs despite me putting the call to Robot.createScreenCapture into the EventQueue with invokeLater.
    My question is: is there any way to stop and wait until repaint/update is completed, and then proceed with the Robot screen capture?
    Thanks for any help.
    josh

    Thanks for your attention and observations. I should have posted earlier -- I'm getting tangled on words. But it has been instructive.
    Here is a sample app. The method submitAnswer is called when the user clicks on the submit button or presses enter when either the textfield or the submit button has the focus. In that method, I attempt to first change the background of a label, and then do a 'special effect' that includes a screen capture. My problem is that the label color change does not happen until after the screen capture.
    Thanks again for your assistance.

  • Basic query in JAVA Threads....Please reply !!

    I have a class (say ABC) which extends Thread...This class basically
    reads some file which provides some start-time and stop-time information..
    File structure is like:-
    ===========================================
    <Entry1>Starttime = A and Stoptime = B
    ===========================================
    Logic is that thread sleeps till time A arrived, then do some operations (which are written
    in it's run() method) till stoptime..
    The object of ABC class is being constructed in some other class.
    Now there is a change....File can have multiple entries like..
    ======================================
    <Entry1>starttime = A and stoptime = B
    <Entry2>starttime = X and stoptime = Z
    <Entry3>starttime = A and stoptime = B
    <Entryn>starttime = X and stoptime = Z
    ======================================
    The start-time and stop-time of any two Entries can be same or different.
    The operations should start executing at the defined time..
    In this case, multiple threads are required, which can do the operations
    mentioned in Entry1,2 etc.....But how should it be implemented..
    My query is:-
    1) Can I have a common-wrapper class, which reads the file and based on
    the number of Entries, instantiates that much number of threads...
    But how to do that....I am new to JAVA...Should that class be a simple
    class...or should it also implement Thread/Runnable interface.....
    Or can I implement it as ThreadGroup......
    Please give soem suggestions....Thanks...

    e.g.
            ScheduledExecutorService exec = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(2);
            exec.schedule(new Runnable() {
                public void run() {
                    runTask();
            }, delay, TimeUnit.MILLISECONDS);

  • Two activeOutputText in a page

    Hi,
    I've followed sample application to create one activeOutputText in a page, this works fine. When I use two activeOutputText using same active data model, this doesn't work.
    My code is as below.
    @PostConstruct
    public void setupActiveData ()
    ActiveModelContext context = ActiveModelContext.getActiveModelContext ();
    Object[] keyPath = new String[0];
    context.addActiveModelInfo(this, keyPath, "state" );
    Object[] keyPath1 = new String[0];
    context.addActiveModelInfo ( this, keyPath1, "state2" );
    // setup a timer that queues the events (in a loop)
    ScheduledExecutorService ses = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool ( 1 );
    adfContext = ADFContext.getCurrent ();
    ses.scheduleAtFixedRate ( new Runnable ()
    public void run ()
    triggerDataUpdate ();
    }, 5, // let's wait some seconds
    2, // period between the updates
    TimeUnit.SECONDS );
    public void triggerDataUpdate ()
    counter.incrementAndGet ();
    ActiveDataUpdateEvent event =
    ActiveDataEventUtil.buildActiveDataUpdateEvent ( ActiveDataEntry.ChangeType.UPDATE, counter.get (),
    new String[0], null, new String[] { "state", "state2" }, new Object[] { counter.get () , counter.get ()+1 } );
    fireActiveDataUpdate ( event );
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bhargav.

    Hi,
    by design you need to have one separate managed bean for each active components if you choose to use the ADS proxy approach. The reason is that for each active component, we need a separate model, which is proxied by the managed bean. So if the two active output text components are served by the same managed bean then this indeed is not supposed to work. Use two separate managed beans instead

  • Using ServletContextListener for background process in tomcat, problems?

    Hi, I am building a web app using mojarra 1.2, hibernate 3.2, mysql 5 and tomcat 6. Currently, there's a need to run a background process every hour to:
    1) query the database
    2) process information
    3) send emails to (big) list of individuals when matched
    4) update database
    5) must happen during business hour
    For now, my approach to this problem is to hook a Timer object inside a class implements ServletContextListener. So that every hour during business hour will process the steps above when Tomcat started until someone shut down shut down Tomcat or when it crash (hopefully that won't happen).
    I read a few articles, they claimed this is not a good approach because in a managed environment, background thread like this won't be in the scope of the container.
    Due to certain reasons, we can't deploy this part as a separate daemon (e.g: jsvc) yet. We'll need to wait for few other things to occur before can we deploy a full daemon services.
    The question for this post is: What are some of the potential problems we will be dealing with when running background thread like this in tomcat? What are some of the things we'll need to watch out for before real problems arise (e.g size of db connection, # of concurrent process, etc) what are some other pitfalls other experienced when deploying background thread in tomcat?
    We hope this solution will be able to handle what needs to be done until our daemon service is ready.
    Thank you for your opinions

    You can try this.. Which gives more grip... in making threads etc..
    Here is a class with a method that sets up a ScheduledExecutorService to beep every ten seconds for an hour:
    import static java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit.*;
    class BeeperControl {
    private final ScheduledExecutorService scheduler =
    Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(1);
    public void beepForAnHour() {
    final Runnable beeper = new Runnable() {
