Searchbar result in a new tab
Hello is it possible open a search result in a new tab instead of the current tab while using the search-bar?
Thank you very much for the swift reply.
It worked.
It seems like
'''browser.search.context.loadInBackground;true'''
AND
'''browser.search.openintab;false'''
would achieve what I wanted.

Opening search bar results in a new tab
My search bar opens the results in a new tab, but, when I click on one of the links on the results page, FF no longer remembers the search results page (ie. the Back button does not work). This problem goes away if I set the search bar results to open in the current tab (about:config > browser.search.openintab > default). Please tell me how to get the back button.
Hi,
You can try to set the value '''browser.search.context.loadInBackground''' to true in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config].

When using the search bar, is it possible to get the search results in a new tab?
In the old Google toolbar, it was possible to view the search results in a new tab. Google toolbar is compatible with Firefox 7, so I have to use the Firefox Search Bar. However, it always gets the search results in the current tab. Can this be modified?
Yes. Open a new tab and type or paste ''about:config'' into the location bar, hit enter, and hit enter again to get past the warning. Then paste ''browser.search.openintab'' into the filter box that shows, then double-click on the ''browser.search.openintab'' line to toggle it (it will switch to bold).
If you'd rather an addon just do the above for you and add a menu option for it, try this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchontab/
Alternatively, you can type a search into the search bar and press ''alt+enter'' instead of just enter to open your search in a new tab. -
When I do the search through the search window on the top right corner, the search results open on top of the page I'm viewing at that moment, instead of in a new tab, so I have to keep remembering to open a new tab before each search. How do I change this, that the results would open up in a new tab?

I'm new to Firefox, but find it a vast improvement over IE. I just find it cumbersome to have to open a new tab before I use the Search Bar...I would much prefer an option akin to "Search results appear in new tab."
Thanks for the help!Edit: I found it.
This preference can be changed using about:config
(1) Type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter (click the button promising to be careful, and please do be careful!)
(2) In the filter box, type or paste '''search''' and pause until the preferences are filtered
(3) Double-click '''browser.search.openintab''' to change it to true. You're done, you can close about:config now.

Are you a keyboard person or a mouse person?
Using the keyboard, after typing your query, hold the Alt key while pressing Enter to open the search results in a new tab. This also works in the address bar: when you type the name of a new site, hold Alt when pressing Enter to open that site in a new tab.
Using the mouse, hold the Ctrl key while clicking the magnifying glass icon.
Is there a way to ''always'' open search results in a new tab without having to use Alt or Ctrl? Hmmm, maybe, I haven't researched that. -
Links in search results do not open new tabs.
I'm missing something here and in other threads on this subject. I used to be able to search in the search bar, using google, for instance, and a new tab would open with the search results. Then if I left clicked on a link within the search results another new tab would open and switch to the linked page.
I don't remember how that was set up, but I know I didn't have to go into about:config or install a special add-on for that. I think it was set up in the tab mix plus add-on.
I have no problem with the search results opening a new tab, it's that I now have to middle-click on a link or right-click + click on "open in new tab".
What changed here and why? My old method worked in Ver. 21, it Changed in Ver. 22.
It seems like all these "updates" remove stuff we used to have with no notice and then come up with more finger clicks and config edits to do what was straight forward before.You may also have to create an allow exception to keep this cookie.

Can't set search results to open in new tab
I have tried to set google search to open results in a new tab but it continues to open in the same window as the search. I am using windows vista ultimate x64 and Firefox 4.01.
I do not know of any way to specify only some bookmarks to open in a new tab. You could middle-click on a bookmark to make it open in a new tab.
There are add-ons that can make all bookmarks open in a new tab, such as:
* [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13784/ Open Bookmarks in New Tab]
* [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122/ Tab Mix Plus]
* [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59961/ Tab Utilities]
* [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/62581/ Tab Utilities Lite]
* [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14439/ Tabberwocky]
All but the first of those will add many other tab browsing features. There will be other tabbed related add-ons that can open all bookmarks in a new tab, you can find them by searching https://addons.mozilla.org/ -
Firefox search engine results not appearing in a new tab
how do i configure FF (3.6.13) to display search engine results on a new tab? It used to do this for me but now doesn't anymore, and I can't find any config settings to change this.
Type '''about:config''' in the URL bar and hit Enter. <br />
''If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.''
'''browser.search.openintab''' is the preference, '''true''' is the value. -
Open bookmark results in "new tab". More is not possible!
[]Opening a bookmark or entering a web address does not work.
The result is only: "New tab".
Also opening in the Firefox Help menu results in "New tab".
By clicking on "New tab" nothing happens!Can't you open any web page or do you only have that problem with bookmarks?
Issues with bookmarks or history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

E.g. if I was on google and middle clicked a search result, I would still be looking at google, but the page I opened would be loaded to the right side.
Google search and other websites have a user preference that can be set to open a search result in a new tab or a new window, for users who are logged in to their website.
Otherwise, when you don't have a 3-button mouse or a scroll pad with "middle-click" functionality, you can use '''{Ctrl + Click}''' to open a hyperlink in a new Tab. -
How do I make it the default that when I click on a link it will open in a new tab?
Particularly when I am doing a Google search, but also when I am in a site, I find I frequently have to right click and force 'open in a new tab' to avoid the link overriding the current tab. I want to have all links I click on automatically open in a new tab. My settings are set to go to the new tab immediately - that works fine - but too often I have to immediately back-page and re-click using the right-click menu to avoid losing my search or origin page. This is annoying when there are several links I want to explore, and have to backtrack to get to them.
Firefox is my default browser, 29.0.1 at the moment, and it runs on an old Dell laptop using WinXP. Before asking this I did check the available support info without finding an answer. I followed the instructions in the article about Google and the about:config but it did no good - it still defaults to opening in the current tab. It might seem like a small thing but in my search for answers I saw some folks who have the reverse problem - they want links to open in the same tab - so clearly it is a settings issue. How do I fine tune mine to get the result I prefer? Thanks!!Google search and other websites have a user preference that can be set to open a search result in a new tab or a new window, for users who are logged in to their website.

Hello,
When I use Google in the search bar, I have to open the search results in a new tab. If I simply click on them to open in the current tab, I'm inevitably redirected right back to the main Google site. This has only started happening in the past month or two -- I'm considering switching to Chrome after 5 years with Firefox because of this. Please help! It's incredibly frustrating to consistently have to remind myself to open all search results in a new tab. It's quite a waste of time over the course of a day.
Here are the basic steps:
1) I do a search using Google in the search bar.
2) As is supposed to happen, the search returns results in the current tab.
3) When I click on a result link, I'm immediately sent back to www.google.com.
4) If I hit back to try to return to the search results, I'm taken to the page that was loaded BEFORE I even did the search.
5) If, and only if, I instead right-click or Mouse3 click on the search results and open them in a new tab, I can successfully go to the search result pages.
